South Africa lets you choose the fence line

Kruger is a national park you can drive yourself. Next door, private reserves with no fence between them and the park run open vehicles off-road and after dark. That one choice sets your budget, your tour company and how close you get.

02

Dry winter or green summer

Your dates are probably set by school or work. Good news: South Africa has no off-season for game, only a trade between visibility and price.

Drywinter in the Kruger region

The dry winter: thin bush, busy waterholes

Safari.com recommends May to September for Greater Kruger, when animals gather at water. Safaria’s Kruger guide calls June to September prime game viewing.

  • Kruger gates open at 06:00 from April to September
  • Mornings on an open vehicle are cold; pack a warm layer

The fences between Kruger and the private reserves came down decades ago, so the same animals roam both. You pay for access and rules, not for different wildlife.

Trafalgar, G Adventures and Intrepid drive into the national park itself. Globus uses the Makalali private reserve; Tauck and A&K book Sabi Sand lodges such as Sabi Sabi and MalaMala.

Ask which side of the line your nights fall on. It’s the single biggest clue to the price.

04

Malaria-free reserves, as the reserves describe them

Traveling with young kids, or simply rather not think about it? South Africa has big reserves that describe themselves as malaria-free, and we name who says so.

Reserve or regionWho says it’s malaria-freeGood to know
Madikwe, North West ProvinceThe reserve’s booking site: “Madikwe is malaria free”Big Five; over 75,000 hectares; about a 4- to 5-hour drive or a 1-hour shuttle flight from Johannesburg (Rhino Africa)
Eastern Cape: Addo, Shamwari, KwandweSouth African Tourism, the national tourism boardPairs neatly with the Garden Route; Gqeberha is the nearest city

Health is your doctor’s call

We don’t give medical advice. Check the CDC’s Travelers’ Health page for South Africa, and for every other country on your route, then talk to your doctor or a travel clinic.

Families like these reserves for a reason. Rhino Africa calls Madikwe a top-rated destination for families, and most of its lodges run wildlife programs for children.

Kruger and the Sabi Sand sit in the northeast, which isn’t on these lists. Plan the health side before you fall for a lodge.

05

Tent, hotel or lodge: how you sleep sets the bill

The same Big Five live on either side of the fence. What you pay for is the bed, the vehicle and who else is in it.

A&K’s Ultimate South Africa Adventure is new for 2027. A&K also adds a Family Adventure in Southern Africa, with a rhino-conservation morning in Marakele, but published that one in Australian dollars only.

Doing several parks yourself? SANParks’ Wild Card waives daily fees across all 21 national parks.

Its prices for the year from November 1, 2026 weren’t out yet when we checked; ask us for the current figure.

The dollar figures use the Rio Times’ rate of about R16.58 to the dollar on October 15, 2026. The rand moves, so budget a little slack.

All-in math

What a South Africa tour costs once you land

We filled in Trafalgar’s Best of South Africa and the middle of Asilia’s tip guidance. The meals figure is our starting estimate; change it, and swap in your own quote.

Trafalgar includes 14 breakfasts, 10 dinners and 1 lunch, so most lunches are yours. Adding Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side? Put about $30 per person for the visa in the fees box. Flights from the US go on top.

10

A day at Sabi Sabi, as Tauck runs it

You’re up before the coffee is good, and you won’t mind. This is the private-reserve rhythm.

Dawn

First drive

Tauck’s Sabi Sabi nights include private game drives twice daily, from dawn to dusk, with a ranger and tracker.

Midday

Back at the lodge

Sabi Sand lodge rates typically include all meals, from early coffee to dinner, per one Sabi Sand guide site.

Afternoon

Second drive

Out again as the heat breaks. Off-road driving is allowed here, so the vehicle can follow a leopard into the bush.

After sunset

Into the dark

The afternoon drive usually carries on past sunset. That’s the part Kruger’s self-drivers can’t do.

Physically, it’s easy: you sit in an open vehicle and hold on. Tauck rates this tour 3 for activity, with 2 to 3.5 miles of walking on most days.

Lodges often cap a vehicle at six guests, per the same guide site. Ask whether yours guarantees everyone an outside seat.

11

Cape Town, the Garden Route and Victoria Falls

A South Africa safari rarely ends in the bush. Most travelers bolt on a city, a coast or a waterfall.

Cape Town and the winelands

Nearly every tour above starts or ends in Cape Town. Tauck gives it three nights; Trafalgar two; Roam pairs it with the winelands; A&K adds Stellenbosch and three nights at Grootbos.

Arriving by ship? Our Cape Town cruise port guide and Cape Town shore excursions cover the waterfront, Cape Point and Boulders.

A safari before or after a cruise is a natural add-on, and we can book both.

The Garden Route

Trafalgar, G Adventures and Intrepid drive it, with Tsitsikamma and Knysna on the way. It turns a safari into a road trip and adds about a week.

Victoria Falls

The Falls sit on the Zambia–Zimbabwe border. Tauck’s South Africa tours sleep on the Zimbabwe side; its Botswana tour sleeps in Livingstone, Zambia.

US citizens don’t need a visa for Zambia, per the State Department. Zimbabwe does require one, sold on arrival at about $30 for a single entry.

Crossing between the two? The KAZA Univisa covers both countries for 30 days at about $50, plus day trips into Botswana via Kazungula.

Issuing has lapsed before, so carry cash for a regular visa too.

For the Okavango and Chobe on the same trip, see our Botswana safari guide.

12

Passports, flights, money and safety

SafetyLevel 2“Exercise increased caution,” issued May 27, 2025, for crime, terrorism, unrest and kidnapping.
Time6 to 7 hours aheadSouth Africa stays on UTC+2 all year, so the gap with US Eastern shifts when the US changes clocks.
MoneySouth African randTips in cash are easiest; ask your operator whether rand or dollars suit each tip.
FlightsJohannesburg or Cape TownLong-haul flights land at either; small planes or road transfers do the rest.

On a bush flight, pack soft. Federal Air allows 20 kg in soft bags plus a 5 kg soft carry-on, and Tauck caps its on-tour flights at 44 lb with a 15 lb soft carry-on.

Book an open-jaw ticket if your tour starts in Johannesburg and ends in Cape Town, as Trafalgar’s does. It saves a backtrack.

13

Tipping, solo travel, families and access

Tips are the line item most first-timers miss. Three published guides give three different numbers; pick one and bring cash.

WhoAsiliaRhino AfricaSabi Sand guide site
Guide or ranger$10–$20 per guest per day~$25 per couple per dayR200–R400 per person per day
Tracker$5–$20~$20 per couple per dayTip separately
Lodge staff (tip box)$5–$15 per guest per day—Tip the butler separately

Solo

Lodges price rooms and vehicles for two, so solos pay more almost everywhere. Intrepid and G Adventures pair you with a same-gender roommate on most trips; Tauck cut solo supplements on some 2026 Africa departures.

Families and access

Tauck’s Bridges family safaris start at age 5; Collette sets 13 as its minimum on safaris. Tauck rates its Elegant Adventure 3 for activity; G Adventures rates its Kruger trip 3, “Average.” If mobility is a question, ask about vehicle steps and lodge paths before you book.

14

Ten things to settle before the deposit

Safari lodges fill early for the dry months. That’s a reason to read the terms first, not to skip them.

Before you pay

15

Who South Africa suits, and who should look north

Book it if

  • You want a safari that also includes a great city, wine country or a coast
  • You’d like to drive yourself, or keep the budget near $160–$400 a day
  • You’re traveling with young children and want a reserve that describes itself as malaria-free
  • You want off-road leopard tracking without the remoteness of a fly-in camp
  • Your dates fall in the green summer and you want value rates

Look elsewhere if

  • You’ve set your heart on the Great Migration; look at Tanzania or Kenya
  • You want water safaris by mokoro and a true fly-in wilderness; Botswana fits better
  • Long road days between parks sound like a chore
  • You want empty roads in Kruger at peak season; the popular sightings draw a crowd
  • You won’t pay private-reserve prices but want private-reserve rules

Our take

Choose the side of the fence first. Kruger by road suits drivers and budgets; the Sabi Sand suits anyone who wants to leave the road and stay out after dark.

Then pick the add-on, because that decides the tour company: the Garden Route points to Trafalgar or G Adventures, Victoria Falls to Tauck or Globus, a beach finish to Roam.

Send us your month and daily budget. We’ll price two of these tours side by side with fees and tips in the total.

What South Africa safari travelers ask us

What does it cost to enter Kruger National Park?

From November 1, 2026 to October 31, 2027, SANParks charges foreign adults R692 a day (about $42) and children aged 2 to 11 R345, up from R602 and R300. A Wild Card waives daily fees at all 21 national parks. On a tour, ask whether the fee is already in your price.

What is the difference between Kruger and the Sabi Sand?

Kruger is a national park: you can drive yourself, but vehicles stay on the roads and the gates close around dusk. The Sabi Sand is a private reserve with no fence between it and Kruger. Its lodges drive off-road to follow animals, run drives into the dark and offer walks with armed rangers, and only lodge guests get in.

Are there malaria-free safaris in South Africa?

Yes, according to the reserves and the tourism board. Madikwe in North West Province says it is malaria free, and South African Tourism describes Eastern Cape safaris, including Addo, Shamwari and Kwandwe, as malaria-free. We don’t give medical advice: check the CDC’s South Africa page and talk to your doctor for every area on your route.

Do US citizens need a visa for South Africa?

Not for tourist stays under 90 days. The State Department says your passport must be valid for 30 days after you leave South Africa and must have two consecutive empty visa pages for each entry, not counting endorsement pages. Adding Victoria Falls? Zambia doesn’t require a visa from US citizens; Zimbabwe does, and sells one on arrival for about $30.

How much luggage can I take on a safari flight?

Usually about 20 kg (44 lb) in a soft bag. Federal Air, which flies guests to Sabi Sabi in the Sabi Sand, allows 20 kg in soft bags only plus one 5 kg soft carry-on in 2026, and charges R800 for up to 10 kg extra if you pre-book. Tauck applies a 44 lb limit on its on-tour flights in South Africa.

How many days do I need for a South Africa safari?

Two to four nights in the bush is the core of most tours we checked. Tauck’s Spotlight on South Africa and Victoria Falls is 9 days with three bush nights; its Elegant Adventure is 12 days with four. Trafalgar’s Best of South Africa takes 15 days to add the Garden Route, and Intrepid’s camping trip runs 22.

Is South Africa safe for a safari trip?

The State Department rates South Africa Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” citing crime, terrorism, unrest and kidnapping (advisory issued May 27, 2025). Read the full advisory and follow your operator’s guidance on transfers and city time.

How much should I tip on a South Africa safari?

Rhino Africa suggests about $25 per couple per day for your guide and $20 for a tracker. Asilia suggests $10 to $20 per guest per day for a guide and $5 to $15 for the staff tip box. One Sabi Sand guide site puts a ranger tip at R200 to R400 per person per day. Check which tips your tour already includes.
