Grand Circle before the catalog arrives

Day structure from Grand Circle’s 2026 Travel Planning Guide for this cruise (10 nights aboard, up to 7 Christmas markets). The 2027 version lists the same ship and cities plus Kaysersberg and Baden-Baden, from $4,495 with international air.
River ships, coach tours and a few small ships
Grand Circle Travel is the land brand and Grand Circle Cruise Line the ship brand. Both sell under one roof at gct.com.
Grand Circle Cruise Line river cruises
Europe’s rivers on ships Grand Circle owns and operates, from 86 to 162 passengers. Each ship carries three or four groups, each with its own Program Director.
- All cabins face the river
- House beer, wine and soft drinks with onboard meals
- $750 deposit per person
Grand Circle Travel land vacations
Escorted coach tours such as England, Scotland & Wales or the Canadian Maritimes, capped at 42 travelers.
- Free single supplement on every land vacation
- Air-inclusive from-prices
- $500 deposit per person
Mediterranean small-ship cruises
Five owned small ships: Corinthian (98), Clio (89) and the 50-passenger sisters Athena, Artemis and Arethusa. Ashore, travelers split into two to four groups.
- Dalmatian Coast, Greece, Sicily and Iberia routes
- O.A.T. uses the same fleet for some of its trips
- $750 deposit per person
Trips with a lower cap
A few Grand Circle itineraries cap lower. Ancient Egypt & the Nile River lists no more than 25 travelers, 16 days from $6,199 with air.
- Check each trip page for its cap
- The single supplement on these is low-cost, not free
- Dates run from 2026 to 2028
Pre- and post-trip extensions
Add nights in Amsterdam, Bruges or another start or end city without a second booking. Grand Circle says 87% of travelers customize their trip.
- Free single supplement on extensions
- Hotel housekeeping tip about $1 a day
- Book them at the same time as the main trip
Grand Circle or O.A.T.: same owner, different trip
The brief version: O.A.T. is smaller and busier, Grand Circle is bigger and easier. Pick by group size and stamina, since the paperwork is the same.

Stairs, bags, ages and protection: Grand Circle’s own rules
The over-50 label says who books. These rules say whether the trip suits your knees and your suitcase.
| Question | What Grand Circle publishes | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Group size | River groups average 38 (38–45 per the fleet page); land groups average 30, at most 42 | A full coach on land. On a river ship you’re one of three or four groups. |
| Ships and hotels | Privately owned river ships, all outside cabins; River Harmony (140 passengers) dates from 1999 | River Harmony is more than 25 years old. Ask which ship your date uses and when it was last refitted. |
| Walking | Rhine Christmas cruise: walk 1–3 miles unassisted over 1–2 hours, 3–4 hours of activity a day, 25–50 stairs without handrails | Gentler than O.A.T., still not a deck-chair trip. |
| Accessibility | Most trips not wheelchair or scooter accessible; walker or crutch users need a companion; Program Directors can restrict participation | Tell Grand Circle about any mobility aid before you pay the deposit. |
| Ages | Travelers “typically over the age of 50”; no minimum age in the terms | Nothing is built for children. Families should look elsewhere. |
| Luggage | One checked bag and one carry-on each; airline norm 50 lbs and 62 inches; one bag handled per person | Pack for one suitcase. Liability is capped at $500 a bag. |
| Protection | Strongly recommended; specific tours require proof of cover from any provider | Ask whether your trip is on the required list before you buy. |
| Loyalty | Frequent Traveler Credit of 5% of the program price toward a trip within a year, then 3%; expires after two years | Works across Grand Circle and O.A.T. trips. |

What Grand Circle costs with the flight already in
Grand Circle’s per-day prices run about $310 to $395 with the flight already in. Add both tips and they rise by roughly $18 a day.
From-prices on gct.com in October 2026. Holland & Belgium shows a 2027 itinerary and Egypt lists 2026–2028 dates; pages marked 2026 carried 2026 pricing. Grand Circle runs frequent sales, so the price you’re quoted may be lower.
All-in math
The Grand Circle bill with the tips in
We filled in Christmas Markets Along the Rhine at its 2027 air-inclusive from-price and the middle of Grand Circle’s tip guidance. Change any of it.
The fare already includes international air from Grand Circle’s gateways. The crew tip ($10–12 a day) covers 10 nights aboard; we spread it as about $9 across 12 days. The $795 supplement is the 2026 figure for this cruise; ask for 2027.
Price-per-day math
Line Grand Circle up against a rival river cruise
If the rival’s price leaves out flights, add your airfare first. Then compare per day.
Grand Circle from-prices are per person, sharing, with international air. They move with your departure city, date and any running sale.
Solo travelers: free on land, low-cost on the river
Grand Circle answers the solo question by format. Know which format you’re booking before you compare.
You’re going alone and you’d rather not pay for an empty bed. On a Grand Circle land vacation you don’t: the single supplement is free.
River cruises are different. The supplement there is low-cost, not free: $795 on the 2026 Rhine Christmas cruise, about 18% of its from-price.
Extensions carry no supplement, whichever trip they’re attached to. There’s a free roommate-matching program too.
Ask for a same-gender roommate and, if Grand Circle can’t find one, it doesn’t charge the supplement. Single rooms are limited, so the free ones go first.
Solo booking checklist
The 90-day line, and the price of crossing it
These match O.A.T.’s terms. Put day 90 in your calendar the day you book.
The deposit is $500 per person on land vacations and $750 on river and small-ship cruises. The balance is due 90 days before departure; book inside that and you pay in full.
You get a short grace period. Cancel within 10 days of booking, with departure still 90 or more days away, and Grand Circle refunds everything, travel protection included.
After that, cancelling 90 or more days out costs the deposit. The fee then jumps to 40% of the total trip price, 65% from 59 days and all of it inside 29 days.
Those percentages include the airfare Grand Circle booked for you. Paying early can also save money: member programs describe a Good Buy Plan worth up to 10% off for paying in full a year or more ahead, so ask whether it applies to you.
Cancellation timeline
Slide to the day you might cancel
Grand Circle’s schedule for bookings made since January 1, 2025, on one river cruise and one land vacation.
Bars show the fee as a share of the air-inclusive from-price. The England, Scotland & Wales price is the 2026 figure. Percentage fees apply to the total trip price, flights booked through Grand Circle included.
A day on a Grand Circle river cruise
Gentler than O.A.T., busier than a big-ship cruise. Bring shoes with grip for cobblestones and ship stairs.
River days are steady, not strenuous. The Rhine Christmas cruise lists three to four hours of activity a day and walks of one to three miles.
A local Program Director leads your group. Each ship carries three or four groups, so tours ashore move in groups of about 38, not 140.
Ports can be up to an hour from the city center, with a coach transfer. Factor that into any free time you plan.
A guided tour ashore
A walking or coach tour with a local guide. Breakfast aboard is included.
Lunch aboard
House beer, wine and soft drinks come with onboard meals.
A market, or a Discovery Series event
Free time at a Christmas market, or an event such as the German bread-baking demonstration on the 2027 Rhine cruise.
Dinner aboard as the ship sails
Ten dinners on board over the cruise, with house wine poured.
Who owns Grand Circle: the Lewis family
A private family company that owns its river and small-ship fleets outright.
Grand Circle dates itself to 1958. Alan and Harriet Lewis bought it in 1985 and kept it private, based in Boston.
In 1993 Grand Circle bought Overseas Adventure Travel. Alan Lewis died in November 2022; Brian FitzGerald is CEO of Grand Circle Corporation.
Today there are three brands: Grand Circle Travel on land, Grand Circle Cruise Line on rivers and small ships, and O.A.T. They share terms, ships and the Frequent Traveler Credit.
There’s no public parent group above them. Your contract is with a family-owned company in Boston.
Who Grand Circle suits, and who should look elsewhere
Book it if
- You want a European river cruise with the flight bundled in
- You’re solo and want a coach tour with no supplement
- You like a gentler pace than O.A.T. and don’t mind a bigger group
- You’d rather pay a modest per-day price than pay for luxury
- You’ll set aside cash for the Director’s and crew’s tips
Look elsewhere if
- You want groups of 16 or fewer; try O.A.T.
- You want an all-inclusive luxury river cruise; try Tauck
- Someone in your party uses a wheelchair or scooter
- You might cancel inside 90 days without cover
- You’d rather lectures than a Program Director; try Road Scholar
Our take
Grand Circle is the value pick among over-50 river cruises we track. The ships are its own, the flight is in the price and land vacations carry no solo supplement.
The trade-off is group size and ship age, not reliability. Expect a group of about 38, ships like the 1999-built River Harmony and a full schedule of included tours.
Choose O.A.T. if you want a smaller group and harder days. Choose Grand Circle if you want the river to do the work, and budget about $18 a day for tips.
Where Seabound Journeys fits in with Grand Circle
You may end up booking Grand Circle yourself. We’ll still check the trip against its rivals first.
Grand Circle takes bookings by phone and at gct.com, and its terms say nothing about outside travel advisors. We’ll check whether we can book your departure; if we can’t, we’ll say so and you book with Grand Circle directly.
What we can always do is the comparison. We set a Grand Circle cruise beside O.A.T., Tauck or a river line we book, with flights on both sides, at no charge.
With the operators we book, Seabound Journeys charges no fee; the tour company pays our commission. Look elsewhere if your trip is already picked: book it with Grand Circle and put the 90-day line on your calendar.

What Grand Circle travelers ask us
What is the difference between Grand Circle Travel and O.A.T.?
Same owner, same booking terms, different trips. Grand Circle runs river cruises on its own ships and land vacations with groups that average about 30 to 38, led by local Program Directors. O.A.T. caps groups at 16 on land and 25 on small ships, uses Trip Experience Leaders and runs more active, farther-flung trips.
How big are Grand Circle groups?
River cruise groups average 38, one of three or four groups on ships of 86 to 162 passengers. Land vacations average 30 and take no more than 42. Some trips, such as Ancient Egypt & the Nile River, cap at 25.
Does the Grand Circle price include airfare?
The headline from-prices do: they include international flights, airport transfers, taxes and fuel surcharges when you fly with Grand Circle air. You can also book Land Only and arrange your own flights.
Does Grand Circle charge a single supplement?
Not on land vacations or extensions, where Grand Circle says the supplement is free. River cruises carry a low-cost supplement: $795 on the 2026 Christmas Markets Along the Rhine cruise. Ask for a same-gender roommate and, if Grand Circle can’t match you, you aren’t charged the supplement.
How much should I tip on a Grand Circle river cruise?
Local guides and motorcoach drivers are already tipped. For the 2026 Rhine Christmas cruise, Grand Circle suggested $7 to $10 a day for the Program Director and $10 to $12 a day for the ship crew, per traveler, in cash.
What is the Grand Circle cancellation policy?
For bookings made since January 1, 2025: 90 or more days out you lose the deposit ($500 on land, $750 on river and small-ship trips); 89 to 60 days, 40% of the total trip price; 59 to 30 days, 65%; inside 29 days, 100%. Cancel within 10 days of booking, with departure at least 90 days away, and you get a full refund.
Who owns Grand Circle Travel?
Grand Circle Corporation of Boston, privately owned by the Lewis family, who bought it in 1985. It also owns Overseas Adventure Travel, acquired in 1993. Brian FitzGerald is CEO.
