Where each region peaks, and whose word that is
You know where you want to go, or you know when you can get away. Either way, start here, and note whose guidance each line is.
Whose calendar this is
We don’t publish our own weather or crowd numbers. Every month below quotes the operator or tourism body that describes it, and the prices come from the operators’ own departure lists unless we say otherwise.
Pick your month, see where it shines
Start from the dates you can travel, not the place. Tap a month for the regions at their best then, and the ones to skip.
January: go south, or go quiet
Europe is deep in the off-season: cheaper flights and hotels, cold drizzle, and dark by 5 p.m., in Rick Steves’ words. The Serengeti calving season runs from late December.
- Serengeti: calving on the southern plains around Ndutu (Asilia)
- Masai Mara: the lower $100-a-day park fee applies January to June (2026 rates)
- Japan: dry winter, snow in Tohoku and Hokkaido; some stores close Dec 29–Jan 3 (JAL)
- Yellowstone: most roads open only to snowcoach or snowmobile (NPS)
February: the cheapest Rome date we found
Rick Steves’ 2027 Best of Rome in 7 Days is $2,745 in February, its lowest price all year. Calving season peaks this month on the Serengeti.
- Peru: the Inca Trail closes all February; Intrepid books the Quarry Trail instead
- Italy: Globus’s Italy Escapes offer ($1,000 off per couple) covered travel Jan 16–Mar 19, 2027, for bookings made Oct 16–31, 2026
- Europe: off-season, so some sights keep short hours or close (Rick Steves)
- Yellowstone: deep snowpack; least busy (NPS)
March: blossoms arrive, Europe still sleeps
Japan’s blossom front starts in the south from mid-March. Tokyo and Kyoto usually peak late March to early April, and Trafalgar charges more for those dates.
- Japan: Trafalgar’s Splendours of Japan is $4,995 for March 7–21, 2027 starts and $5,525 from March 24
- Rome: the 7-day Rick Steves tour rises to $3,095 for March departures
- Serengeti: the calving season winds down by the end of March
- Utah: Zion’s March crowds run almost three times February’s, thanks to spring break (NPS)
April: Europe’s spring shoulder
Decent weather, long-enough daylight and fewer crowds, says Rick Steves, though the Mediterranean can already run near peak. Japan’s Golden Week fills trains from late April.
- Japan: blossoms into early April, Sapporo in late April; Golden Week late April to early May (JAL, JNTO)
- Canada: Rocky Mountaineer’s 2027 season opens April 12, with its lowest fares of the year
- Yellowstone: roads begin opening mid-April, weather permitting (NPS)
- Peru: one of Intrepid’s balance months for weather and crowds
May: Alaska’s quiet start, Europe’s pricey one
Princess says May is drier, less crowded and full of early-season specials; its 2027 cruisetours start May 8. Europe’s peak starts now, and on two Trafalgar tours May priced above June.
- Peru: dry season begins; still a balance month (Intrepid)
- Yellowstone: moderately busy; all roads typically open by Memorial Day (NPS)
- Botswana: the dry season starts around May
- Europe: Trafalgar’s European Grandeur is $12,095 for every May date, its highest
June: high summer begins
Peru’s dry season hits its busy peak and Cusco stages Inti Raymi. Southern Africa’s dry winter opens the best Kruger game viewing, June to September.
- Scandinavia: Rick Steves’ window runs mid-June to late August
- Japan: rainy season (JAL)
- Alaska: Denali expects buses to the far end of its park road again from June 8, 2027, in phases
- Europe: the late-June European Grandeur date was its cheapest, $10,925
July: wildlife at its most dramatic
Great Migration river crossings usually start in July (Asilia). Alaska is warmest, around 67°F on average, and Princess calls it usually the most expensive month.
- Mediterranean: high temperatures, “even sweltering heat” (Rick Steves)
- Masai Mara: the park fee doubles to $200 a day from July 1 (2026 rates)
- Peru: peak season; Independence Day falls July 27–28
- Utah: Zion is regularly over 100°F, and monsoon season begins (NPS)
August: head north, or head to the Mara
Rick Steves sends you north in peak season for the best weather and the longest days. The southern Mediterranean sits in its hottest weeks.
- Peru: August is especially crowded (Intrepid)
- Alaska: the priciest date on one Princess cruisetour listing falls in mid-August
- Kruger and Botswana: dry season game viewing
- Edinburgh: the Fringe runs August 6–30, 2027; book tours that stay there early
September: the month many advisors wait for
Alaska turns gold by Labor Day, and nights get dark enough in the Interior for the northern lights (Princess). The herds are mostly in the Masai Mara.
- Europe: the tail of peak season; Rick Steves’ Rome tour holds its $3,295 top price
- Canada: Rocky Mountaineer’s priciest month of 2027
- Peru: Cusco quieter, Machu Picchu still busy (Intrepid)
- Kruger: last month of the dry-winter window
October: shoulder season again
Europe’s second shoulder month. One Rick Steves Rome departure, October 3, 2027, was already waitlisted a year out.
- Japan: foliage starts turning (JAL)
- Canada: Rocky Mountaineer’s 2027 season ends October 8
- Peru: next year’s Inca Trail permits go on sale in mid-October
- East Africa: herds start south, October to November (Asilia)
November: color in Japan, markets in Germany
Fall foliage peaks in many parts of Japan (JAL). Christmas-market tours start in the last week of the month, and Botswana’s cheaper green season begins.
- Europe: off-season begins; Cosmos’s Rome, Florence & Venice starts from $1,599 on November 7, 2027
- Germany and Austria: Trafalgar’s 2026 Christmas-markets departures start November 24
- Kruger: lush, hotter, good birding, November to March
- Yellowstone: most roads close to regular cars (NPS)
December: festive cities, quiet beaches
Rick Steves runs a Rome departure for Christmas week (Dec 20–26, 2027, $3,095). Most beach resorts shut in December, by his account.
- Serengeti: calving begins late December (Asilia)
- Christmas markets: Trafalgar’s 8-day tour keeps departing into December
- Japan: dry winter; some stores close Dec 29–Jan 3 (JAL)
- Yellowstone: snowcoach season begins late in the month (NPS)

Labels condense each source’s own words: Rick Steves (Europe), Princess (Alaska), the National Park Service (Yellowstone), Japan Airlines’ guide (Japan), Intrepid (Peru, Botswana), Asilia (the Great Migration) and Safaria (Kruger). Green marks the window each source favors; amber is a trade-off; red is off-season, closed or poor.
Region by region
The detail behind the grid. Read the tab for the place you’re booking, then open its full guide from the cards below.
Continental Europe
Three seasons, by Rick Steves’ count: peak roughly May to September, shoulder in April and October, off-season November to March.
- July and August bring “sweltering heat,” especially in the south
- Mediterranean Europe is green in spring and parched in fall
- Off-season: flights often hundreds of dollars cheaper, but dark by 5 p.m. and some sights closed
Britain, Ireland and the north
For northern Europe and the British Isles, Rick Steves recommends peak season for the best weather and longest days. Most escorted Britain and Ireland programs run about April to October.
- Scandinavia’s tourist season is very short: mid-June to late August
- Ireland: Met Éireann’s averages make May the sunniest month
- Edinburgh in August: the Fringe runs Aug 6–30, 2027, so book early
Alaska and the Canadian Rockies
Princess calls May and September the shoulder seasons: good weather and easier booking. July is warmest, busiest and usually priciest.
- May: drier, early-season specials, wildlife at lower elevations
- September: fall color by Labor Day, northern lights in the Interior
- Rocky Mountaineer 2027: April 12 to October 8; fares lowest in April, highest in September
Yellowstone, Utah and Glacier
The NPS rates Yellowstone busiest June through September. Its roads begin opening mid-April and are typically all open by Memorial Day weekend.
- Utah’s Mighty 5: April to May and September to October; Zion is regularly over 100°F in summer
- Glacier: Going-to-the-Sun Road is typically fully open from early July
- Yellowstone in winter: most roads closed to regular cars
Japan
The blossom front moves from the south in mid-March to Sapporo in late April, per Japan’s tourism board. Japan Airlines’ guide puts Tokyo and Kyoto in late March to early April, and the foliage peak in November.
- Golden Week, late April to early May, is a domestic travel peak
- June is the rainy season; summer is muggy; typhoons come in fall
- Blossom dates cost more: $530 extra on one Trafalgar tour
Peru and Machu Picchu
Intrepid’s advice: aim for the dry season. June to August is the busiest stretch, and August especially.
- Balance months: April, May, October and November
- The Inca Trail closes every February; permits for the next year go on sale in mid-October
- Inti Raymi in Cusco in June; Independence Day July 27–28
Africa safaris
There’s no single safari season. The Great Migration moves; southern Africa runs on dry and green seasons.
- Serengeti calving: late December to March, peaking in February (Asilia)
- River crossings usually from July; Masai Mara in September, when its park fee is at the higher rate
- Botswana dry May–Sep/Oct, green Nov–Apr and cheaper; Kruger best June–September
Shoulder season: what you give up for the quiet
Shoulder season is the advice everyone gives. It’s good advice, with two catches the sources spell out.
The first catch is the Mediterranean. Rick Steves warns that its shoulder months can come with near-peak crowds and prices.
The second is the price list. Shoulder is a weather idea, not a pricing rule, and operators set each departure separately. Check the date you want before you assume it’s cheaper.
Same tour, different month: what operators charge
Season guides usually stop at the weather. We pulled the operators’ own dated prices for the same trip.
From ricksteves.com, October 26, 2026. No July or August departures are listed. The price is locked when you pay the deposit.
Trafalgar’s list prices, October 26, 2026. The November 1 date was on a last-minute deal at $4,455, and November 15 was sold out. The page showed 10 of 35 departures; later 2027 dates weren’t visible.
| Trafalgar tour | Priciest dates listed | Cheapest dates listed | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| European Grandeur, 26 days (2027) | May: $12,095 (all three dates) | Late June: $10,925 | ~$1,170 |
| Easy Pace Italy, 10 days (2027) | May 2: $5,595 | June 6 & 20: $4,850 ($4,365 on a discounted June 13 date) | ~$745 |
| Splendours of Japan, 9 days (2027) | Mar 24–Apr 4: $5,525 | Mar 7–21: $4,995 | ~$530 |
| Christmas Markets of Austria, Germany & Switzerland, 8 days (2026) | Nov 28, Dec 1–2: $3,650 | Nov 24: $3,250 list ($2,763 on a 15% deal) | ~$400 at list |
Per person, sharing, as listed on October 26, 2026. European Grandeur shows several start-and-end versions; the page doesn’t say which one its dated prices belong to. Easy Pace Italy showed 10 of 65 departures; its $3,450 from-price wasn’t on any date we could see.
On the Rome tour, a February date costs $550 less than an October one, about 17% off the peak price. That’s the off-season discount Rick Steves describes, made visible.
Japan shows an event premium instead. Two weeks separate Trafalgar’s $4,995 and $5,525 dates, and the difference is the blossom.
The European lists hold a surprise. May, the start of peak season, carried the highest price on both Trafalgar tours, above June, July and August.
So the cheap month is set by the operator, not the weather.
Prices move with sales too. Globus’s Italy Escapes offer, $1,000 off per couple, covered January-to-March 2027 travel for bookings made October 16–31, 2026. Ask for the price on two or three dates before you pick one.
Two dates, one tour
Price your two travel windows side by side
We filled in Trafalgar’s 9-day Japan tour on a mid-March and a blossom-peak date. Swap in the departures you’re weighing, from any operator.
Prices per person, sharing, before flights, as Trafalgar listed them on October 26, 2026. Same tour, so the per-day gap is the season premium.
The cheapest time to tour, region by region
You want the trip for less, and you’ll bend on the month to get it. This is where each region’s price drops, and what you give up there.
Our arithmetic on each source’s highest and lowest dated price. The Princess figures are a reseller’s 2028 listing (2027 showed “contact us”); Rocky Mountaineer rates come from an authorized reseller (it has a no-discount policy on rail-only fares); the Mara fee is the 2026 non-resident rate.
| Region | Cheapest window in the evidence | What it looked like | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Italy and Mediterranean Europe | November to February | Rick Steves Rome $2,745 in February; Cosmos Rome, Florence & Venice from $1,599 on November 7, 2027 | Cold, short days, some sights closed |
| Japan | Outside the two peaks | Trafalgar’s mid-March dates $530 under blossom peak | Blossom timing shifts year to year, by a week or more |
| Alaska | Late May | $2,384 on May 21 against $3,124 on August 13 (Princess, 2028 listing) | Celebrity warns May and September Denali tours can swap routes in bad weather |
| Canadian Rockies | April | Rocky Mountaineer SilverLeaf CA$2,399 in April against CA$3,149 in September | The coach tours we found don’t start until June |
| East Africa | January to June | Masai Mara park fee $100 a day, $200 from July (2026) | The crossings happen in the pricier half |
| Botswana | November to April | The green season, with fewer visitors and lower prices (Intrepid) | Rain; the delta floods in the dry months instead |
| Peru | The wet season, November to April | Quieter; none of our sources publish month-by-month tour fares | No Inca Trail in February |
Read the chart as a ceiling on what timing alone can save. On most tours it’s 10 to 30%, not half.

Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year on tour
Holiday weeks are short, popular and priced with care. Book them first, and compare the days either side.
You’ve got school or office time off at the holidays, and you want to use it on a tour. Europe’s cities are where that works.
Christmas-market tours fill the gap. Trafalgar’s 8-day Christmas Markets of Austria, Germany & Switzerland runs Vienna to Zurich, departing near-daily from November 24 into December 2026, at $3,250 to $3,650 list.
Thanksgiving dates go first. Trafalgar’s November 26, 2026 departure, Thanksgiving Day, was sold out a month ahead, while several dates either side carried 15% last-minute deals.
Christmas itself is quieter on the price list than you’d think. Rick Steves’ Christmas in Rome week, December 20 to 26, 2027, is $3,095, the same as its November dates and $200 under peak.
Collette has added a Christmas Markets & Castles of Europe tour for 2027–28, and Trafalgar sells Rhine and Danube Christmas-market river cruises. Our river cruise guide covers that format.
New Year is thinner. Japan’s stores can close December 29 to January 3, by JAL’s account, and most of Europe’s beach resorts are shut in December. Book a city, not a coast.

Who should chase which season
Plan around this if
- Shoulder season if you can travel in April, May, September or October and want the balance
- Off-season Europe if price and quiet beat weather, and you’re happy with city sights over beaches
- Peak season if you’re going north (Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia) or need school-vacation dates
- Event-driven dates if the trip is about blossoms, the Migration or fall color: book the event, then the tour
Rethink the dates if
- You assume shoulder means cheaper; check the departure price
- You’re hoping for the Inca Trail in February; it’s closed
- You want Utah’s parks in July; Zion is regularly over 100°F
- Heat bothers you and the only dates you have are July or August in southern Europe
Our take
The “best” month is a trade, not a date. It’s the one that gives up what you care about least. For most of our travelers that’s a little warmth or a little daylight, in exchange for space.
Price is the part people guess wrong. Operators price each departure, and on the 2027 lists we checked, May often cost more than midsummer while Japan charged a clear blossom premium.
Pick two or three dates that fit the season you want, ask for the price on each, and book the one that wins on both. If none of these windows fits your dates, look elsewhere: a river cruise or a city stay works in months a coach circuit doesn’t.

What travelers ask us about timing a tour
What is the best month for a land tour of Europe?
It depends on what you trade. Rick Steves counts May through September as peak, April and October as shoulder, and November through March as off-season. For Britain, Ireland and Scandinavia he recommends summer for the weather and long days; for the Mediterranean, spring and fall, though shoulder months there can still carry near-peak crowds and prices.
What is the cheapest time of year to take a tour?
Usually the off-season for that region, but check the departure. Rick Steves’ 2027 Best of Rome in 7 Days is $2,745 in February against $3,295 at peak. Rocky Mountaineer’s cheapest 2027 fares are in April, Alaska cruisetours are cheapest in May, and the Masai Mara’s park fee is $100 a day from January to June against $200 from July (2026 rates).
Is shoulder season always cheaper on a tour?
No. On the 2027 tour pages we checked, Trafalgar priced May departures of European Grandeur at $12,095, above every June, July and August date ($10,925 to $11,195). Compare the exact departures, not the season name.
What is the best month for an Alaska land tour or cruisetour?
Princess calls May and September the shoulder seasons, with good weather and easier booking, and says July is the warmest, busiest and usually the most expensive month. Princess runs its 2027 cruisetours from May 8 to September 8. From June 8, 2027, Denali expects buses to reach the far end of its park road again, so June is the strongest month if Denali is the point of the trip.
When is cherry blossom season in Japan, and does it cost more?
The blossom front starts in the south around mid-March and reaches Sapporo in late April; Tokyo and Kyoto usually peak from late March to early April. It costs more: Trafalgar’s 9-day Splendours of Japan is $4,995 for departures March 7 to 21, 2027, and $5,525 from March 24 to April 4.
When should I go to Machu Picchu and Peru?
Intrepid points to the dry season, May to October. June through August is the busiest stretch, and April, May, October and November balance weather and crowds. The Inca Trail closes every February, and next year’s permits go on sale in mid-October.
When is the best time for an African safari?
Pick the event first. Calving peaks in February on the southern Serengeti, river crossings usually start in July, and the herds are mostly in the Masai Mara in September. Southern Africa’s dry winter, about June to September, is the classic Kruger and Botswana window; Botswana’s green season, November to April, is cheaper.
Can I take a tour over Christmas or Thanksgiving?
Yes, mostly in European cities. Trafalgar’s 8-day Christmas Markets of Austria, Germany & Switzerland departs from late November into December, and its Thanksgiving-day departure in 2026 had already sold out. Rick Steves runs a Christmas in Rome week, December 20 to 26, 2027, for $3,095. Few long countryside circuits run in deep winter.
