Britain by tour: price, days, group size and the catch
You’re choosing between seeing all three countries and actually unpacking. Prices are 2027 fares from the operators’ own pages unless we label them a reseller listing.
Eleven days, London to London: one real circuit
Picture the whole trip before you compare fares. This one covers all three countries in ten nights and sleeps in eight hotels.
- London1 nightThe welcome night. The tour comes back here for its last one too.
- York1 nightShakespeare’s Stratford on the drive north, then the medieval city.
- Edinburgh2 nightsHadrian’s Wall Path and Jedburgh on the way in; Edinburgh Castle and the Stone of Destiny.
- Glasgow1 nightLoch Lomond on the day’s route west.
- Windermere1 nightGretna Green, then the Lake District landscapes that inspired Wordsworth.
- Cardiff1 nightDown through the Welsh Marches by way of Ludlow.
- Plymouth2 nightsGeorgian Bath on the way; a day in Dartmoor National Park, then Stonehenge on the drive back to London.
From $3,983 per person on the April 27, 2027 departure (shown against $4,425), average group 33, 10 breakfasts and 3 dinners, per Trafalgar’s own tour page. Other 2027 dates run to about $5,225.
A day on this tour: day 3, Hadrian’s Wall to Edinburgh
Leave York
Pack up after one night. On this circuit, that’s most nights.
Hadrian’s Wall Path
A stop on the Roman frontier that once ran coast to coast across northern England.
Jedburgh
Over the border into the Scottish Borders.
Edinburgh
The first of two nights, with Edinburgh Castle on the next day’s program.
Seasons: what changes month to month
Britain’s weather is changeable all year. The bigger seasonal variables are crowds, daylight and, in Scotland, midges.
Spring: gardens and gamble weather
Intrepid’s England guide calls spring “a mixed bag”: gloriously sunny one day, pouring the next, warming noticeably by late May.
- Wildflowers, wildlife and the Chelsea Flower Show
- Most escorted programs start in April
- Pack for both kinds of day
Summer: the busy season
Warmer, drier and busiest. Expect longer queues at every big sight, plus the August festivals in Edinburgh.
- Long evenings around the June solstice
- Scottish midges are active roughly May to October, worst in the western Highlands and islands
- Book August dates early if Edinburgh is on the route
Autumn: the value window
It cools from late September and the queues shrink. The Lake District turns gold.
- Bring a waterproof coat and warm layers
- Many tours run their last departures in October
- Our pick for a circuit tour if your dates are flexible
Winter: city breaks, not circuits
Often grey and damp; snow is uncommon outside the far north and the mountains. Accommodation is usually cheaper.
- Christmas markets and quiet Cotswold villages
- Few multi-country coach tours run
- A London-based trip makes more sense than the Highlands
Edinburgh in August: the festival premium
Going in August because of the festival is one trip. Going in August by accident is another, and it costs more.
The 2027 Edinburgh Festival Fringe runs August 6 to 30, with the city’s other festivals around it. Hotels notice.
The US government notices too. In February 2025, The Times reported that the State Department’s lodging allowance for its own staff in Edinburgh was about $607 a night in summer and $250 the rest of the year.
The same report found a city-center Travelodge at £249 on the first Monday of August, against £41 on an ordinary Monday.
No tour operator publishes how much August adds to its fares. So test it: price the same tour on a late-July date, an August date and a September date, and ask which Edinburgh hotel each one uses.
As reported by The Times in February 2025. It’s an allowance for government travelers, not a hotel quote, but it tracks what the city charges in season.
If you want the Fringe
Pick a tour with two nights or more in Edinburgh, and leave an evening free. A one-night stop in August gets you the price without the festival.
Eight operators, three kinds of trip
Every Britain tour is one of three shapes: the London-round-trip circuit, England only, or Scotland only. Pick the shape before the brand.
| Tour (2027) | Operator | Days | From | Per day | Group | Shape |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| England and Scotland Heritage (Saver) | Trafalgar | 11 | $1,800* | ~$164 | Coach | England + Scotland |
| England, Scotland & Wales | Cosmos | 13 | $2,602* | ~$200 | Coach | All three |
| Amazing Britain | Trafalgar | 10 | $3,145* | ~$315 | Coach | All three |
| Essential Britain | Globus | 12 | $3,999 | ~$333 | Coach | England + Scotland |
| Walk Hadrian’s Wall Highlights | Intrepid | 7 | $2,335* | ~$334 | Small group | England, on foot |
| Best of Britain – Premium | Trafalgar | 11 | $3,983 | ~$362 | Average 33 | All three |
| Best of Britain (Small Group) | CIE Tours | 9–10 | $3,645† | ~$365–$405 | 26 or fewer | All three |
| Best of England | Rick Steves | 14 | $5,595 | ~$400 | 24 to 28 | England |
| Shades of the English Countryside | Collette | 9 | $3,999* | ~$444 | Classic averages 37 | England |
| Heart of Scotland | Rick Steves | 8 | $3,945 | ~$493 | 24 to 28 | Scotland |
| England, Scotland & Wales | Tauck | 14 | $10,690 | ~$764 | Small Group dates average 24 | All three |
* Reseller listing (Global Journeys), 2027 dates. † CIE’s own page lists the fare without saying which year; ask us for the 2027 figure. Trafalgar’s classic Best of Britain (11 days, average 45, 22 stops including Skye and Glencoe) shows from £2,336 on its UK site for 2027; its US fare wasn’t showing when we checked, so ask us for it.
From-price divided by days, not an all-in cost.
The cheap end is crowded and real. Our August 2026 matched-pair check put Globus Essential Britain about 13% above Cosmos England, Scotland & Wales per night on discounted fares, the smallest Globus premium of the three regions we tested.
Trafalgar now sells Britain at three price points. The Saver tier (formerly Costsaver), the Classic and the Premium tier (formerly Insight Vacations) cover similar ground; the Premium Best of Britain averages 33 guests against 45 on the classic version.
Wales is the country circuits shortchange. Trafalgar’s Premium Best of Britain gives Cardiff one night, and the classic version stops there too; Tauck gives the north Welsh coast two. Check how many nights yours gives it.
All-in math
What a Britain tour really costs you
Start with the fare from your quote. Our starting figures are Trafalgar’s 2027 Best of Britain – Premium and the midpoints of Trafalgar’s tip guidance; change any of them.
The Premium tour includes 10 breakfasts and 3 dinners, so most evening meals are yours to buy. Tip guidance is Trafalgar’s general advice; ask whether Premium departures differ. For Rick Steves, set both tip boxes to zero. For Rabbie’s, add the hotel nights to the fare first. Flights and insurance are on top.
Which Britain tour fits you?
A matcher, not a ranking. It weighs what you tell it against the tours in the table.
Matcher
Shortlist three Britain tours
Four taps: budget, the shape of trip, group size and how often you can face a new hotel.
Which tour for which traveler
The matcher scores price, shape and pace. This table covers the rest of who you are.
| You are | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A first-timer | Trafalgar Best of Britain (Classic or Premium) or Globus Essential Britain | London, York and Edinburgh in one booking, with no driving on the left |
| On a tight budget | Trafalgar’s Saver tier or Cosmos | About $164 and $200 a day; add tips and optionals before you compare |
| After luxury | Tauck England, Scotland & Wales | Six hotels in 13 nights, including three at The Savoy |
| Set on a small group | Rabbie’s in Scotland (max 16), a CIE Small Group date (max 26) or a Tauck Small Group date (average 24) | Rabbie’s leaves hotels to you; CIE and Tauck include them |
| Traveling solo | Trafalgar for a matched roommate; Rick Steves for a private room | Trafalgar matches same-gender roommates on nearly all solo tours at the twin price. Rick Steves no longer matches roommates and charges a private-room supplement |
| Bringing kids | Cosmos, Globus, Trafalgar or Collette | Cosmos, Globus and Trafalgar take children from age 5, and Collette does on most tours. Trafalgar takes up to 10% off the land price for ages 5–17 on its Kids & Teens deal |
| Active | Intrepid Walk Hadrian’s Wall Highlights | Seven days walking the Roman wall country, from about $2,335 in a reseller listing |
| Slower, or less steady on your feet | Tauck | Two nights in every hotel. Tauck rates the pace 3, “full days with little downtime,” with 2 to 3.5 miles of walking on most days. Rick Steves expects several miles a day on stairs and cobbles, and that you carry your own bag |
Accessibility details beyond activity ratings aren’t published on the tour pages we compared. Ask us for the hotels and walking on your exact departure before you pay a deposit.
The pace problem: count the check-ins
Britain is long and narrow. The farther north a London round trip goes, the more nights it spends on the move.
Globus and Trafalgar Amazing Britain from our August 2026 night-by-night ledgers; Trafalgar Premium from its 2027 itinerary (eight hotel stays in ten nights); Tauck from its listed hotels (six hotels, 13 nights).
Essential Britain strings seven one-night stays together and has nine check-ins in 12 days, on our August 2026 ledger. That’s how a 12-day tour gets to Scotland and back to London.
Tauck spends more and moves less: two nights in every stop and three at The Savoy in London. Its own pace rating is 3, “full days with little downtime,” with 2 to 3.5 miles of walking on most days.
Our advice: if two nights per stop matters to you, cut a country, not your patience. A 9-day England tour or an 8-day Scotland tour beats a 10-day circuit with eight hotels.
Scotland on its own, in a small group
If the Highlands are the point of the trip, a London circuit squeezes them in between York and Edinburgh. A Scotland tour gives you the week.
Rabbie’s runs Scotland the other way round: mini-coaches of 16 or fewer, a professional driver-guide, and tours of two to six days from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. The Isle of Skye in three days and Iona, Mull and Skye in five are typical.
Read the price carefully. Rabbie’s tour price covers the coach, the guide and the commentary; accommodation, meals and entry fees are extra, and it arranges your rooms after you book.
For a fully escorted version, Rick Steves Heart of Scotland runs 8 days from $3,945 and Best of Scotland 13 days from $5,695, both with tips included. CIE’s Taste of Scotland (5 to 7 days) is listed from about $1,645 on its own site, year not stated; ask for the 2027 fare.
The UK ETA: £20, two years, every passport
This is the one piece of paperwork every American on a Britain tour now needs. Do it the week you book.
| Paperwork | What the official sources say |
|---|---|
| ETA: who needs it | US citizens and other visa-free visitors; only British and Irish citizens are exempt |
| ETA: cost | £20 per person since April 8, 2026 (it was £16, and £10 before April 2025) |
| ETA: validity | Two years or until the passport expires; multiple trips of up to six months |
| ETA: children | Every traveler needs their own |
| ETA: enforcement | The grace period ended in February 2026; no ETA can mean no boarding |
| ETA: where | gov.uk/eta. Look-alike sites charge far more than the official fee |
| Passport | Valid for your whole stay, with at least one blank page (US State Department) |
| State Department advisory | Level 2, “exercise increased caution,” issued May 8, 2025, for terrorism; attacks could target tourist sites, transport hubs and public events |
Renewing a passport?
The ETA is tied to the passport you apply with. Get the new passport first, then the ETA, or you’ll pay twice.
Pairing Britain with Ireland? The same ETA covers Northern Ireland, and you need it even crossing from Dublin by road. Our Ireland tours guide has the detail.
Flights, the clock, money, and adding a cruise
The tour is the easy part to book. The flights around it decide how your first and last days feel.
Most circuits here start and end in London, so a round-trip ticket is the easy booking.
Tauck is the exception. Its England, Scotland & Wales starts with two nights in Edinburgh and ends with three in London, so fly into Edinburgh and home from London.
Arrive a day before the tour starts. An overnight flight plus a welcome dinner is a long first day, and a delayed connection shouldn’t cost you a stop.
The clock. Britain runs on Greenwich Mean Time from late October to late March and British Summer Time the rest of the year, per VisitBritain: five hours ahead of New York for most of the year.
Money. Pounds sterling. VisitBritain says cards and contactless payment are widely used, with Visa and Mastercard the most common and American Express only sometimes accepted. Some small shops and market stalls are cash-only.
Plugs. Type G, three rectangular pins, 220–240 volts. Bring an adapter.
Adding a cruise. Many British Isles and transatlantic cruises sail from Southampton and Dover. Our Southampton and Dover port guides, the Edinburgh port page and the Northern Europe cruise guide help you pair a tour with a sailing.
How many days Britain takes
A rule of thumb from the itineraries: about four days per country is the floor before it turns into a coach-window tour.
One city or one country
Rick Steves Best of London (7 days) or Heart of Scotland (8). Globus London & Country is about $1,903 for 7 days in a reseller listing.
England properly, or a fast circuit
Collette’s English Countryside in 9; Trafalgar Amazing Britain and CIE Best of Britain in 9–10.
The classic circuit
Trafalgar Best of Britain (11), Globus Essential Britain (12), Cosmos England, Scotland & Wales (13).
All three, with room to breathe
Tauck and Rick Steves Best of England both run 14 days; Tauck’s includes Wales.
Add a night in London at the start and price one at the end. Extra hotel nights aren’t in any of these fares.
Tipping, tourist taxes and the costs off the brochure
Tips aren’t in most fares. Budget them per day, per person, and the totals stop surprising you.
| Operator | Tour director / guide | Driver | What’s already covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trafalgar | $5–7 per person per day | $3–5 per day | Hotel porters, housekeeping, dining-room tips |
| CIE Tours | €10 per day for a Driver/Guide (published in pounds too) | Shared with the guide on one-person crews | Small-group rates run higher |
| Rick Steves | Included | Included | All guide and driver tips |
| Cosmos, Globus | No published per-day figure | No published figure | Ask at the welcome meeting |
On an 11-day Trafalgar circuit, its own guidance comes to roughly $88–$132 per person. Add it to the fare before you compare with Rick Steves, where it’s already in.
Off the coach, VisitBritain says tipping isn’t expected the way it is in the US. Restaurants sometimes add an optional service charge, which Visit London puts at usually 12.5%; if there isn’t one, 10–15% is well received. Londoners generally don’t tip in pubs, and rounding up a taxi fare is normal.
Then the new line item: tourist taxes. Edinburgh has charged a 5% visitor levy on accommodation since July 24, 2026, on the first five consecutive nights of stays booked from October 1, 2025. Welsh councils can bring in their own from April 2027 at the earliest, at £1.30 per person per night in hotels. Ask whether your fare already includes them.
Our Trafalgar cost calculator totals tips, optionals and meals for you, and the land-tour tipping guide lines up every operator’s numbers.
Before you pay the deposit
Deposits on these tours run from about $200 to $400 a person, and the refund rules differ more than the fares do.
| Operator | Deposit | Final payment due | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rick Steves | $400 per person, fully refundable for 30 days | 60 days before departure | Your price is locked once the deposit is in |
| Cosmos and Globus | $250 per person, non-refundable | 60 days before on most trips | Terms revised September 8, 2026 |
| Trafalgar | From $200 per person | 90 days before on most departures from summer 2026 | Per a reseller’s summary of Trafalgar’s terms; confirm on your quote |
August Edinburgh dates and small-group departures fill first. Our booking-window guide covers when to commit, and the insurance timing guide explains why to buy cover soon after the deposit.

Who a Britain tour suits
Book it if
- It’s your first trip and you want London, Bath, York and Edinburgh in one booking
- You’d rather not drive on the left or juggle UK rail tickets
- You want a price that fits: Trafalgar now sells Britain at three tiers
- You want Scotland in depth with 16 or fewer people (Rabbie’s) or tips built in (Rick Steves)
Look elsewhere if
- You want two or three nights in every stop and can’t stretch to Tauck; a circuit can’t deliver that
- Wales is the main event; most tours give it a night or two
- You’re set on the Fringe but booked a one-night Edinburgh stop
- You mainly want London; a city stay beats a coach tour
Our take
Britain is easy to tour and hard to tour well, because the distances make every circuit a trade between coverage and calm.
On price, Cosmos and Trafalgar’s Saver tier lead, and Globus costs a little more for a Choice day. On comfort, Trafalgar Premium and Tauck pull ahead. For Scotland, a dedicated small-group trip beats two days on a London circuit.
Choose the shape, count the hotels, then file the ETA.

What Britain first-timers ask us
Do Americans need a UK ETA for a Britain tour?
Yes. US citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation to enter the UK. It costs £20 per person (up from £16 on April 8, 2026), every traveler needs one, children included, and it lasts two years or until the passport expires. Apply on gov.uk/eta. Your passport must also be valid for the whole stay.
How many days do you need to tour Britain?
An England, Scotland and Wales circuit from London runs 10 to 14 days on the tours we compared: 11 on Trafalgar Best of Britain, 12 on Globus Essential Britain, 13 on Cosmos, 14 on Tauck. One country done well takes about 7 to 9 days.
What is the cheapest guided tour of Britain?
Among the tours we compared, Trafalgar’s England and Scotland Heritage (11 days, about $1,800 in a reseller listing, the ex-Costsaver Saver tier) and Cosmos England, Scotland & Wales (13 days, about $2,602 in a reseller listing, roughly $200 a day). Flights are extra.
Is Edinburgh more expensive in August?
Yes, sharply, for hotels. In February 2025 The Times reported the US State Department’s lodging allowance for Edinburgh at about $607 a night in summer against $250 the rest of the year, and a city-center Travelodge at £249 on the first Monday of August against £41 on an ordinary Monday. The 2027 Fringe runs August 6 to 30. Compare an August tour date with July or September before you book.
Is there a tourist tax in Edinburgh?
Yes. Since July 24, 2026, Edinburgh charges a visitor levy of 5% of the room cost on the first five consecutive nights of a paid stay booked from October 1, 2025. Welsh councils can add their own levy from April 2027 at the earliest. Ask whether your tour fare already covers it.
Who runs small-group tours in Scotland?
Rabbie’s runs mini-coach tours of up to 16 passengers with a driver-guide from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness; accommodation, meals and entry fees aren’t in its tour price. Rick Steves (groups of 24 to 28) and CIE Tours (Small Group dates of 26 or fewer) also run Scotland.
How much should I tip on a Britain tour?
Trafalgar suggests $5–7 per person per day for the Travel Director and $3–5 for the driver. CIE suggests about €10 a day for a Driver/Guide and publishes the same guidance in pounds. Rick Steves includes all guide and driver tips. In restaurants, VisitBritain says 10–15% is well received if no service charge is on the bill.
Do Britain tours include Wales?
Many circuits dip in rather than stay. Trafalgar’s Best of Britain and its Premium version stop in Cardiff; Tauck’s England, Scotland & Wales spends two nights in Deganwy; Rick Steves listed no Wales-named tour for 2027.
