From $3,549 regular price on G Adventures’ Nat Geo Journeys page (on sale from $2,662 for November 2026). Groups average 12; 13 breakfasts, 4 lunches and 3 dinners included.
Canals, a volcano, a cloud forest, a Pacific park
The country is small, but the regions feel nothing alike. Here’s what each one is for.
Tortuguero
You arrive by road and then motorized canoe; the lodges sit on the water. The point is the canals and the turtles.
- Nat Geo spends two nights here; G Adventures spends two days
- Turtle nesting and hatching outings are seasonal and optional
- Pack light: G warns laundry takes a long time to dry
Arenal and La Fortuna
The volcano town is the activity hub, with hot springs and canyoning among G’s optionals. Both G trips give it three nights with free days.
- G’s Adrenaline Bundle of optional activities costs from $149
- Trafalgar sells an optional Arenal kayak outing (about $65 in August 2026)
- Ask what’s included before you compare fares
Monteverde
Night walks, ziplines and guided hikes in the cloud forest. Nat Geo adds a lecture and a reforestation morning.
- Night walk from about $30 and ziplining as options on Nat Geo
- Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket
- Getting from Arenal can mean road and boat
Manuel Antonio
A national park on the coast near Quepos: trails, beaches and tide pools. It’s the Pacific stop on most loops.
- G and Nat Geo include a guided park visit
- Catamaran trips cost from about $80–$95 extra
- Two to three nights is typical
Guanacaste
The beach end of the country, served by Liberia’s airport (LIR). None of the guided loops we checked base themselves here, so it works best as a beach stay after the tour.
- Trafalgar’s Costa Rica Nature Adventure offers an optional Papagayo day (about $109 adult, $93 child in August 2026)
- Ask us to price beach nights after the tour
- Check whether your flight home can leave from LIR instead of San José
Dry season, green season
Costa Rica’s calendar is rain, not heat. Choose how much of it you want.
| Item | Dry season | Green (rainy) season |
|---|---|---|
| Months | December to April (G dates it Dec 1 to Apr 30) | May to November |
| What the operators say | G reorganizes some Quepos activities, but nothing is dropped | Nat Geo warns of rain and cooler days June to November, especially in the Central Valley |
| Turtles | Outings are seasonal; ask for your dates | Outings are seasonal; ask for your dates |
The dry season is the easy pick. The green season isn’t a closed season; it’s a wetter one, and tours run straight through it.
Neither operator we read publishes crowd or price figures by month. Ask us to compare the same tour in March and in September, and you’ll see the difference in your fare.
Pack a rain jacket either way. Our best time for a land tour guide compares seasons across destinations.
A day getting to Tortuguero
This is day 2 of Nat Geo Journeys’ Explore Costa Rica, from its trip page. It’s the day the trip stops feeling like a city break.
Leave San José
Road transfer east toward the Caribbean lowlands.
Motorized canoe
The last stretch is by boat, so you arrive at the lodge on the water.
Guided boat trip
Out on the waterways with a guide to look for wildlife.
Turtles, in season
Turtle-nesting excursions are seasonal and optional; ask whether your dates fall in season.
The next morning starts early with a canal wildlife outing, then a visit to the Turtle Love Conservancy.
Who runs Costa Rica: real tours for 2027
Most of the operators on our site sell Costa Rica. The split is pace and age, not route.
| Tour | Days | From | Group & style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Globus · Costa Rica Escape | 7 | $1,089 | Escapes format; sale price (was $1,239); seasons 2026–2028 |
| G Adventures · Costa Rica Adventure | 16 | $2,099 | Max 16, avg 12; ages 12+; new itinerary from January 2027 |
| Collette · Tropical Costa Rica | 9 | $2,699* | Child rates 5–17 |
| Nat Geo Journeys · Explore Costa Rica | 14 | $3,549 | Avg 12; ages 12+ |
| Adventures by Disney · Costa Rica | 7 | $5,299* | Families; children from 5; 2026 adult rate |
| Contiki · Best of Costa Rica | 8 | Ask us | New for 2027; 18–35s; small group |
| Trafalgar · Costa Rica Nature Adventure | – | Ask us | Coach touring; optional Arenal kayak and Papagayo days |
From-prices per person, sharing a room, before international flights, as shown October 26, 2026. * Collette from a US reseller’s listing; Adventures by Disney’s 2026 adult rate from a Disney specialist agency. G Adventures and Nat Geo figures are regular prices; both had November 2026 dates on sale for 25% less. Prices move: confirm on your date.
The adventure brands sell the most Costa Rica. G Adventures runs the long, active version with free days for optionals; its Nat Geo trip slows the same loop down and adds hosted experiences.
Contiki adds two Costa Rica trips for 2027: the eight-day Best of Costa Rica and a 46-day Mexico City to San José overland.
The classic brands are here too. Globus runs a seven-day Escape, Collette a nine-day trip, and Trafalgar its Nature Adventure; Cosmos also sells Costa Rica. Ask us for Intrepid’s and Tauck’s current departures and fares.
What a day in Costa Rica costs
At the low end Costa Rica is good value per day, until optional activities start filling your free afternoons.
From-price divided by days, per person, twin share, before international flights. * Reseller or agency figure. Highlighted: the family-luxury pick.
The spread is about sixfold. G Adventures and Globus sit under $160 a day; Nat Geo and Collette run about $250 to $300; Adventures by Disney costs about $757.
The cheap end leaves more to you. G’s 16-day trip includes 12 meals and plenty of free days, so optionals like the $149 Adrenaline Bundle or an $80 catamaran trip add up.
G also leaves out airport transfers and asks you to carry a $200 emergency fund. Count both, plus tips and the $29 exit tax, before you compare.

Costa Rica with kids: who takes which ages
The minimum age decides the shortlist before the budget does.
| Operator | Ages | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adventures by Disney | From 5 | Agencies say 6+ get the most out of it; two Adventure Guides |
| Collette | Child rates 5–17 | Tropical Costa Rica, 9 days |
| G Adventures | 12+ | Under 18s travel with an adult |
| Nat Geo Journeys | 12+ | Minors with an adult over 21 |
| Contiki | 18–35 | No families |
Costa Rica suits families well: wildlife on most days, and boat trips, hot springs and ziplines that kids already want to do.
Under 12? Look at Adventures by Disney and Collette first; Trafalgar prices some optionals for children too. With teens, G Adventures and Nat Geo open up, at much lower prices per day.
Mobility matters too. G warns that some two-story lodges have no elevators and you carry your own bags. See our family land tours guide for every operator’s age rules.
How many days Costa Rica takes
Distances are short on the map and slower on the road. Count regions, not miles.
| Trip | Days on the tours we checked | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| A short taste | 7 | Globus Costa Rica Escape; Adventures by Disney |
| A little longer | 8–9 | Contiki Best of Costa Rica 8; Collette Tropical Costa Rica 9 |
| The full four-region loop | 14 | Nat Geo Explore Costa Rica |
| The loop plus Sarapiquí and free days | 16 | G Adventures Costa Rica Adventure |
Tours start with an arrival day in San José; G’s welcome meeting is usually 5 to 7 p.m.
Tortuguero and Manuel Antonio sit on opposite coasts, so check that a shorter tour includes both before you assume it. Add beach nights in Guanacaste afterward if you want a rest at the end.
Passport, flights and money
The paperwork is light. Three details still catch people out.
Start with the passport. G Adventures asks for at least six months of validity, and says Costa Rica requires proof of onward travel, so keep your return flight handy.
Check the official rules on the State Department’s Costa Rica page before you book; it also carries the current advisory level.
Flying in: the tours we checked start and end in San José. Liberia (LIR) serves Guanacaste. Ask us which Florida and Texas airports have nonstops on your dates, and arrive the day before.
Time: Costa Rica stays on Central Standard Time all year, so it matches Texas in winter and runs an hour behind it in summer.
Money: the colón is the official currency, and US dollars are widely accepted at tourist-facing businesses, usually with change in colones. G suggests clean bills under $100, a card as backup, and cash from San José before the first week’s ATM-light stretch.
Budget the exit tax
G Adventures lists a $29 Costa Rica airport exit tax that isn’t in its fare. Ask whether your airline ticket already includes it.
Insurance
G Adventures requires at least $200,000 of medical and evacuation cover on its trip. See our guides to insurance purchase windows and how far ahead to book.
Tipping in dollars, and what operators suggest
Tips here are modest and easy, because dollars work. Budget them from day one anyway.
G Adventures suggests $6 to $10 per person a day for its leader and $5 to $10 a day for drivers and local guides. At restaurants, about 10%.
Its Nat Geo trip suggests $8 to $10 a day for the Expedition Leader, with the same driver and guide range.
Trafalgar says local currency is generally preferred for tips, but US dollars are accepted in Costa Rica. Its general guidance is $5 to $7 a day for Travel Directors and $3 to $5 for drivers.
Carry small bills. See our tipping guide for every operator’s numbers side by side.

Who a guided Costa Rica tour suits
Book it if
- You want four regions in one trip without driving mountain roads yourself
- You’re a family, and the operator’s age rules fit your kids
- You’re traveling solo and want built-in company on the hikes and boat trips
- You want the boat transfers to Tortuguero handled
- You’re pairing it with a beach stay or a cruise call at Puntarenas or Limón
Look elsewhere if
- You want one beach for a week; book a resort in Guanacaste instead
- You’re happy renting a car and booking lodges yourself
- You need step-free lodging everywhere; ask first, since some properties lack elevators
- Your kids are under 4
- Rain would spoil the trip and you can only go in October
Our take
Costa Rica is a route more than a destination: canals, volcano, cloud forest, coast. The operators mostly agree on it, which makes comparing them easy.
Choose by who’s coming. Little kids: Adventures by Disney or Collette. Teens and active adults: G Adventures or its Nat Geo version. A short first look: Globus’s Escape.
Then pick dry or green season, and ask what’s included on the free days.

What Costa Rica first-timers ask us
When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?
The dry season runs December to April; G Adventures dates it December 1 to April 30. May to November is the rainy, or green, season, and G’s Nat Geo trip warns of rain and cooler temperatures from June to November, especially around San José and the Central Valley. Tours run all year.
What do US citizens need to enter Costa Rica?
G Adventures asks for a passport valid at least six months and says Costa Rica requires proof of onward travel, such as your return flight. Check the State Department’s Costa Rica page before you book, and budget for the airport exit tax, which G puts at $29.
Can I use US dollars in Costa Rica?
Usually, in tourist areas. The colón is the official currency, but US dollars are widely accepted at tourist-facing businesses, often with change in colones. G Adventures suggests carrying clean US bills under $100, with a card as backup, and warns of 5% to 10% card fees in places and few ATMs in the first week of its trip.
Is Costa Rica good for a family tour?
Yes, if you match the operator to your kids’ ages. Adventures by Disney takes children from 5 (the minimum since mid-2022; it recommends 6 and up), and Collette prices child rates for ages 5 to 17. G Adventures and its Nat Geo trips set the minimum at 12. Contiki is for 18 to 35s only.
How many days do I need in Costa Rica?
A week is the shortest guided trip we found: Globus’s Escape and Adventures by Disney both run seven days. Nat Geo’s 14-day trip covers the full loop of Tortuguero, Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio, and G’s 16-day trip adds Sarapiquí.
How much does a Costa Rica tour cost?
On the tours we checked, from about $131 a day (G Adventures Costa Rica Adventure, regular price) to about $757 a day (Adventures by Disney, 2026 adult rate), per person before flights. Add tips, airport transfers where they aren’t included, optional activities like ziplining, and the $29 exit tax.
How much should I tip on a Costa Rica tour?
G Adventures suggests $6 to $10 a day for its leader and $5 to $10 a day for drivers and local guides, plus about 10% at restaurants. Its Nat Geo trip suggests $8 to $10 a day for the Expedition Leader. Trafalgar says US dollars are fine for tips in Costa Rica.
