What a first Central Europe tour looks like
Every dollar figure here is a starting fare for one traveler in a shared room, airfare extra, read off the tour company’s own site. When an agency listing supplied it instead, the table says so. Most first trips look like this.
- Prague3 nightsSt. Vitus Cathedral and Old Town Square, then a full “Your Way” day to roam.
- Bratislavaday stopThe castle and the Old Town on the drive south into Austria.
- Vienna3 nightsThe Hofburg and the imperial boulevards, St. Stephen’s, the Opera, and VIP entry to the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
- Győrday stopA Hungarian town on the road east to the capital.
- Budapest3 nightsThe Parliament Building on a Be My Guest day, then a free day before the departure transfer.
From $2,625 for the March 5, 2027 departure; other listed 2027 dates ran $2,695 to $2,895. Average group 45, “Balanced” pace, 9 breakfasts and 3 dinners. Stops and highlights from Trafalgar’s itinerary page.
A coach through the capitals, or a ship down the Danube?
You’re choosing between more places and fewer suitcases. Neither is wrong; they suit different trips.
Start with Prague. It sits on the Vltava, not the Danube, so most river cruises leave it out.
If Prague is the city you most want, a coach tour is the simpler trip.
If unpacking every other night sounds like work, the river wins. Viking’s Danube Waltz runs between Passau and Budapest in 8 days from $1,999 in 2027; Tauck’s six-day Essence of the Danube runs Budapest to Vienna from $2,990.
Tauck’s Blue Danube is the one we found that does both: nine nights aboard and two at the Fairmont Golden Prague, from $7,590.
Compare lines on our river cruise guide, then read Viking, Avalon, AmaWaterways and Tauck side by side. Our Danube river guide covers the ports.
| Danube sailing | Length | Starting fare | Daily | Where it runs | Fare found on |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Viking Danube Waltz | 8 | $1,999 | ~$250 | Passau and Budapest | Viking, 2027 |
| Tauck Essence of the Danube | 6 | $2,990 | ~$498 | Budapest to Vienna, ms Joy, Oct/Nov | tauck.com |
| Tauck The Blue Danube | 12 | $7,590 | ~$632 | 9 nights aboard + 2 at the Fairmont Golden Prague | tauck.com, 2026–28 |
Which cities fit, and how many days they take
You’re weighing vacation days against a map. Here’s how much time each city gets on real 2027 itineraries.
| City | Nights on real tours | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| Prague | 2 to 3 | Trafalgar (3), Cosmos and Intrepid (2), Tauck Blue Danube (2, at the Fairmont Golden Prague) |
| Vienna | 2 to 3 | Trafalgar (3), Intrepid (2), Globus Best of Eastern Europe (2); a port day on most Danube cruises |
| Budapest | 2 to 3 | Trafalgar (3), Rick Steves Central Europe (3), Intrepid (2); the start or end of most Danube cruises |
| Kraków | 2 | Rick Steves Central Europe, with Auschwitz-Birkenau “when available”; Globus Best of Eastern Europe |
| Salzburg and Munich | Varies | Globus Imperial Splendors runs Munich round trip; Trafalgar’s Christmas market tour stops in Salzburg and sleeps in Munich |
| Český Krumlov | 1 | Intrepid Highlights of Central Europe, by public bus from Prague |
| Trip length | What fits | Real example |
|---|---|---|
| 7 to 8 days | The three capitals at two nights each | Cosmos Prague, Vienna & Budapest, 7 days; Intrepid Highlights of Central Europe, 8 days |
| 10 days | Three nights per capital, a Bratislava stop | Trafalgar Prague, Vienna and Budapest; Collette Imperial Cities |
| 12 days | Add Berlin or Dresden, or a river leg | Rick Steves Best of Berlin, Prague & Vienna; Tauck The Blue Danube |
| 14 to 15 days | Add Poland, the Tatras or Slovenia | Globus The Best of Eastern Europe; Rick Steves Central Europe: Prague to Slovenia |
Count the drives, not just the days
Rick Steves lists bus days of about six hours on its 15-day Central Europe tour, Prague to the Beskydy Mountains and the Tatras to Budapest. A short tour of three capitals has far less road time. Ask for the longest driving day before you book.
When to go, by what the calendars show
Your months decide three things at once: the fare, whether seats are left, and how many layers go in the bag. Pick the window you can travel.
Spring: early demand, mid-range fares
Trafalgar’s April 2027 Prague, Vienna and Budapest dates were listed at $2,895, its May dates at $2,750.
- Rick Steves’ 15-day Central Europe tour was waitlisted on every April 2027 date by October 26, 2026
- Globus’s Best of Eastern Europe 2027 season starts April 24 on the reseller listing we checked
- Book spring a year out if you want a choice of dates
Summer: the most departures, some of the lowest Rick Steves fares
Rick Steves’ lowest 2027 Central Europe fare, $4,945, sat on June 18, June 25 and August 20 dates.
- Globus’s July 3, 2027 Best of Eastern Europe date was its highest on the listing, about $5,359
- Trafalgar’s June 2027 dates were $2,895
- Ask for each date’s fare; summer isn’t uniformly dearer
Autumn: fills as fast as spring
Every September 2027 Rick Steves Central Europe date we saw was waitlisted at $5,395.
- Tauck’s Essence of the Danube runs in October and November
- Tauck’s Blue Danube runs April to November
- If September is gone, look at early October
Winter: Christmas markets, then the cheapest dates
Trafalgar sells a winter version of Prague, Vienna and Budapest from about $2,475 (reseller), and Globus’s 7-day Imperial Escape runs October 2026 to March 2027 from about $1,739.
- Late November to December is market season; see our Christmas market tours guide
- Rick Steves’ Central Europe tour doesn’t run in winter; its 2027 dates span April to October
- Pack for cold; our packing list covers winter layers
We don’t quote temperatures or crowd counts; the operators don’t publish them. These tabs use what they do publish: departure calendars, fares by date and seat availability.

Starting fares in dollars for each of two travelers sharing, airfare extra. A “reseller” figure came from the agencies Global Journeys or AffordableTours because the company’s US site showed none; we’ll pull today’s fare when you ask. From 2027 Trafalgar sells three tiers, Saver, Classic and Premium; the Easy Pace tour appeared under both Insight and Trafalgar at the same price on the reseller listing.
Budget coach: Cosmos, Globus winter dates
The lowest prices per day, two nights a city, breakfast most days. Fine if you plan your own dinners.
Mainstream coach: Trafalgar, Collette, Globus
Three nights a city on the 10-day tours, more included sightseeing. Globus builds in a choice of excursion in Budapest and Prague on Best of Eastern Europe.
Small groups: Intrepid, G Adventures
Intrepid caps Highlights of Central Europe at 12 and uses trains, trams and public buses. You carry your bag.
Independent-minded: Rick Steves
Rick Steves runs 24 to 28 travelers per bus and folds all the tipping into the fare. Solo travelers pay $900 extra on the 15-day trip. You carry your own bag over cobbles and stairs.
River: Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Tauck
Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and the Wachau from one cabin. Tauck includes gratuities and all excursions.
Luxury: Abercrombie & Kent, Tauck
A&K’s 10-day Budapest-to-Prague tour starts around $10,920 on a reseller listing; Tauck’s Blue Danube about $633 a day.
A day in Pest, and what the walking is like
A map hides the cobbles and the stairs. One real day from a 2027 itinerary shows them.
Walking tour past Parliament
Day 8 of Rick Steves’ Central Europe: Prague to Slovenia. The tour rates the day “strenuous” for walking.
Free time at the Great Market Hall
Lunch is yours; the tour includes all breakfasts and half the dinners.
A Danube cruise
About an hour on the Danube in the evening. The thermal-bath orientation comes the next day, in Buda.
Central Europe’s old towns are cobbled and hilly. Prague Castle sits above the river, as does Buda’s Castle Hill.
Expect to climb to both on foot.
Rick Steves warns of carrying your own luggage over uneven pavement and stairs and standing for up to four hours. Intrepid’s trip uses public buses and trains, with your bag.
Coach tours handle the bags. Trafalgar’s Prague, Vienna and Budapest carries a “Balanced” label. It also sells an Easy Pace Budapest, Vienna & Prague; ask us for that one’s day-by-day before you assume it’s gentler.
On the river, Tauck rates The Blue Danube Activity 2 and Pace 3 on its own scales.
Wheelchair and scooter users should raise it with us first. Tauck, for one, tells guests its staff can’t give one-to-one help with walking or mobility equipment, and it wants those travelers to bring a companion who can. A private tour usually works better.
What Central Europe costs per day, and all-in
The cheapest day costs about a sixth of the dearest. Hotel grade, the number of travelers and how many dinners come with the fare explain most of that gap, so add those up first.
Our arithmetic on the from-prices above. Inclusions differ: Rick Steves includes tips; Cosmos includes few dinners; Intrepid Premium includes tips.
All-in math
Your Central Europe total, extras and all
It opens on Trafalgar’s 10-day three-capitals fare, with tips set halfway along Trafalgar’s suggested ranges. The food number is our starting estimate, so overwrite it, along with any figure your own quote changes.
Trafalgar feeds you 9 breakfasts and 3 dinners, which leaves about 15 lunches and dinners to buy. Trafalgar’s fare already covers porterage, restaurant gratuities and hotel taxes. Add your flights; this tour starts in Prague and ends in Budapest, so price an open-jaw ticket.

Answer five questions on money, format, walking, group size and range. The suggestions come from the trips in the tables above.
Four currencies, one border system
Most of this trip happens inside the Schengen area, so the border is easy. The money changes three times.
| Country | Cities on these tours | Currency | State Department level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Czechia | Prague, Český Krumlov | Czech koruna (CZK) | Level 1 (Jan 8, 2026) |
| Austria | Vienna, Salzburg | Euro (EUR) | Level 1 (Aug 21, 2026) |
| Hungary | Budapest, Győr, Eger | Hungarian forint (HUF) | Level 1 (Apr 15, 2026) |
| Poland | Kraków, Warsaw | Polish złoty (PLN) | Level 1 |
| Slovakia | Bratislava | Euro (EUR) | Check travel.state.gov |
| Germany | Munich, Berlin, Dresden | Euro (EUR) | Level 2, terrorism |
Money
The euro won’t cover the whole trip. The European Commission lists Czechia, Hungary and Poland among the EU countries that don’t use it.
Intrepid prices Prague’s optional sights in koruna on its trip page, which tells you what you’ll pay in at the door.
Ask your tour director on day one where to draw local cash, then spend it before you cross the next border.
Passports and the border
Americans need no visa for a tourist stay of 90 days or less in any 180-day window. Keep at least three months on your passport past the day you leave the EU, the State Department advises.
The Entry/Exit System phased in from October 12, 2025 and has run in full since April 10, 2026: fingerprints and a photo on first entry, free. Children under 12 aren’t fingerprinted.
ETIAS isn’t live. No start date had been announced as of late October 2026, and the EU says it will give several months’ notice.
Pickpocketing is the everyday risk. The State Department flags passport theft on trains between Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava.
Who you tip in Prague, Vienna and Budapest, and who you don’t
On a tour, the company’s policy matters more than what locals leave in a café. Find your operator’s row, then set the cash aside.
| Company | Travel Director or leader | Coach driver and city guides | The policy behind it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trafalgar | $5–$7 a day | Coach driver $3–$5 a day; a city guide $2–$3 for a half day or $5 for a full one | Trafalgar publishes these ranges itself |
| Globus, Cosmos | No figure given | No figure given | Neither sells prepaid gratuities on Europe tours |
| Collette | On you | On you | The US terms leave end-of-tour tips out of the fare |
| Rick Steves | In the fare | In the fare | Staff are salaried and don’t accept tips |
| Intrepid Premium | In the fare | In the fare | Intrepid’s other styles vary; check each trip’s notes |
| Tauck (river) | In the fare | In the fare | Covers Directors, crew, local guides and luggage handling |
| G Adventures | On you | On you | Your call; each trip page suggests amounts |
Worked through at $6 and $4 a day, the middle of Trafalgar’s two ranges, ten days comes to roughly $100 for each traveler. Porterage and restaurant tips are already in Trafalgar’s fare.
Flights, the clock and the first night
The paperwork is light. The flight plan is where a Central Europe tour quietly goes right or wrong.
Fly in a day early. An overnight flight that lands late costs you a spare hotel night, not Prague Castle.
Then check the end. Rick Steves’ 15-day tour finishes at Lake Bled, about 30 minutes from Ljubljana’s airport, so price that leg before you book.
Going alone, bringing children or taking it slower
Tour fares are built for two people in one room. If that’s not you, start here.
| Your situation | Look first at | The reason |
|---|---|---|
| On your own, on a coach | Trafalgar | Most of its solo-friendly departures will pair you with a roommate of the same sex and charge the shared-room fare |
| Solo, small group | G Adventures or Intrepid | G Adventures pairs you with a same-sex roommate at no supplement; Intrepid’s Highlights trip sets a minimum age of 15 |
| Alone and keen on Rick Steves | Central Europe: Prague to Slovenia | There’s no roommate service, so a single room adds $900 |
| Solo on the river | Tauck | Category 1 cabins carried no single supplement on European river departures in 2026; ask about 2027. AmaWaterways charges 50% |
| A family with kids | Tauck Blue Danube Family Riverboat Adventure | 8 days from $5,790 in 2027–28, minimum age 4, 8 and up recommended |
| Parents after Disney-style guiding | Adventures by Disney | Danube sailings plus a new 3-day Munich Escape for 2027; ask for the price |
| Slower on your feet | A Danube river cruise | One cabin all week; Tauck rates The Blue Danube Activity 2. Trafalgar’s Easy Pace tour is the coach alternative |
| After luxury | Tauck or Abercrombie & Kent | Top hotels and most meals in the fare on Tauck; its river cruises add the tips |
Every fare above assumes a double room. Get the solo surcharge as a dollar figure for your departure. Globus won’t pair strangers, and Cosmos drops its surcharge on a limited set of 2027 Europe departures only.
Add-on nights, a Danube leg and booking timing
The tour fills the middle of the trip. Sort the edges while you’re booking it.
Nights either side
You can buy additional hotel nights at either end from Trafalgar and from Tauck. Booking your own? Trafalgar’s fare covers hotel taxes on tour nights; nights you add yourself pay them at the desk.
Adding a river cruise
A coach tour that ends in Budapest leaves you at the start of many Danube sailings. Our Budapest and Vienna river guides cover the docks and hotels.
Going in December? Read our Christmas market tours guide first; the market dates change the plan.
How far ahead to book
On October 26, 2026, 19 of the 25 Rick Steves Central Europe dates we saw for 2027 were waitlisted. Four of the open six had one or two seats left.
Spring and September travelers should commit roughly twelve months ahead. Each company’s deposit and final-payment dates sit side by side in our booking-window guide.
Insurance
Cover for pre-existing conditions, and a few other benefits, often hinges on buying the policy within days of the deposit. Our guide to insurance purchase windows explains the deadlines; read it first.

Who Central Europe suits as a tour, and who should do it independently
A group tour fits if
- You want Prague, Vienna and Budapest without booking three hotels and two cross-border trains
- You’d like Kraków or the Tatras added and don’t want to drive them
- You hate unpacking; a Danube cruise gives you the river cities from one cabin
- You’re traveling alone and want people to eat with (price the solo surcharge before you fall for it)
Look elsewhere if
- You’re happy on trains; the three capitals are linked by rail, and Intrepid itself uses the train to Budapest
- You want slow weeks in one city; a self-guided trip fits better
- Prague is the whole point and you’ve booked a river cruise; check the route twice
- You need step-free access throughout; ask about a private tour
Our take
For a first trip, take the 10-day, three-nights-a-city format. Trafalgar listed it from $2,625 for March 2027, and the extra night per city is what makes it a vacation.
If you’d rather unpack once, sail the Danube and add Prague on land. Tauck packages both, and Trafalgar sells a Prague extension after its Danube sailings.
Either way, divide each fare by its days and then read what it covers. Ten cheap days without dinners can end up dearer than a fuller fare.

What Central Europe first-timers ask us
How long should a Prague, Vienna and Budapest tour be?
Seven days covers all three at two nights each; Cosmos sells that format from about $1,304 on a reseller listing. Ten days gives you three nights per city, which is how Trafalgar and Collette run it. Adding Kraków, Salzburg or Slovenia pushes a tour to 12 to 15 days.
Is a Danube river cruise or a coach tour better for Central Europe?
A river cruise unpacks you once and covers Budapest, Vienna and the Wachau Valley, but most sailings skip Prague, which isn’t on the Danube. Tauck’s Blue Danube adds two hotel nights in Prague. A coach tour reaches Prague, Kraków and Salzburg, and costs less per day at the budget end, with fewer meals included.
What currency do I need in Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Kraków?
Four different ones. Austria, Germany and Slovakia use the euro. Czechia uses the koruna (CZK), Hungary the forint (HUF) and Poland the złoty (PLN); none of the three is in the euro area, per the European Commission.
Will Americans need a visa or ETIAS for Prague, Vienna and Budapest?
No. A tourist stay inside the Schengen area needs no visa if it lasts 90 days or less in any 180. The State Department wants three months left on your passport past the date you exit the EU. The Entry/Exit System has been fully running since April 10, 2026, with fingerprints and a photo at the border. ETIAS isn’t live, and no start date had been announced as of late October 2026.
When is the best time for a Central Europe tour?
Most coach and river departures run April to October. Rick Steves’ 2027 Central Europe tour already had waitlists on most April, May and September dates by late October 2026. Winter versions run too: Trafalgar sells a winter Prague, Vienna and Budapest from about $2,475, and late November to December is Christmas market season.
How much should I tip on a Central Europe tour?
Your tour company sets the rule. Trafalgar’s guidance is $5 to $7 daily for the Travel Director plus $3 to $5 for the coach driver. On Rick Steves tours the fare already covers guides and drivers. Tauck includes gratuities on its river cruises. Globus and Cosmos publish no daily figure.
Is Central Europe safe for American travelers?
The State Department rates Czechia, Austria, Hungary and Poland Level 1, exercise normal precautions, and Germany Level 2 for terrorism. Its Czechia and Hungary advisories single out pickpocketing in tourist areas and passport theft on trains between Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava.
Can I combine a Central Europe tour with a river cruise?
Yes. Trafalgar offers a Prague extension after its Danube sailings, and Tauck’s Blue Danube builds two nights in Prague into a 12-day trip from $7,590. Ending a coach tour in Budapest also puts you at the start of westbound Danube sailings, such as Trafalgar’s Budapest-to-Passau route.
