Overview

Why the Danube comes first

Celebrity calls the Upper Danube the most popular route on the river and the better choice for a first river cruise. We would not argue. A week between Passau and Budapest crosses Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Nobody repacks a suitcase.

What it is not is a scenery cruise in the Rhine sense. One 2026 comparison puts it plainly: the Rhine wins on daytime castles and small towns, the Danube on big cities, music and art — and on where you can extend to afterward. If Vienna and Budapest are the point, this is your river.

It also has a lower half most people never sail. Below Budapest the river turns toward Belgrade, the Iron Gates and Bulgaria, and the trip ends with a coach into Bucharest rather than a gangway. Celebrity pitches that stretch to repeat river cruisers, not first-timers.

This page runs top to bottom. The stretches come first, so the itinerary names make sense, then the routes and the season — including what 2026's low water did. After that come the lines' water policies, cabins and the fares each line publishes. The city and stop pages carry the dock-level detail.

The river

The river in five stretches

  1. 01

    Upper Danube (Passau/Vilshofen–Vienna)

From Passau, where three rivers meet, the river runs through Austria past Linz — the jumping-off point for Salzburg — then the Strudengau narrows and Grein. Melk Abbey sits on its bluff before the plain opens toward Vienna. It is the most-sailed stretch, the one Celebrity recommends for first-timers — and the lockiest. Austria's DoRIS table lists Jochenstein just below Passau and then nine Austrian locks, Aschach to Freudenau at Vienna, most of them transited overnight.

  2. 02

    The Wachau (Melk–Krems)

The UNESCO-listed valley between Melk and Krems is the scenic highlight of the whole river. Terraced vineyards, apricot orchards, medieval villages, and the castle ruin above Dürnstein where Richard the Lionheart was held. Lines schedule it in daylight. Viking lists 'Scenic Sailing: Wachau Valley' on Day 5 of Romantic Danube, AmaWaterways docks at Weissenkirchen for it, and Riverside pairs Dürnstein in the morning with Melk after lunch. Celebrity notes the vineyards turn gold and crimson around the autumn harvest.

  3. 03

    Vienna–Budapest (the capitals)

Below Vienna's Freudenau lock the river crosses into Slovakia and passes Bratislava. Then comes the big Gabčíkovo lock — the last one before Budapest — and the Danube Bend at Visegrád, which Viking sells as scenic sailing. Hungary has no locks on this stretch, so the final run is open river. The approach to Budapest is the moment every line schedules. Celebrity lists 'Scenic Budapest' as its own itinerary entry.

  4. 04

Lower Danube (Budapest–Bucharest or the Black Sea)

South of Budapest the river widens across the Hungarian plain to Mohács, then Vukovar in Croatia, Novi Sad's Petrovaradin fortress and Belgrade, where the Sava joins. The signature is the Iron Gates gorge on the Serbia–Romania border. DoRIS lists its two locks at km 943 and km 864. Then Vidin and Ruse in Bulgaria, and the landing at Giurgiu or Oltenița for the hour-plus coach to Bucharest. Viking's Capitals of Eastern Europe carries on to Constanța on the Black Sea.

  5. 05

The Main-Danube Canal (the Nuremberg link)

Between Kelheim on the Danube and Bamberg on the Main, Viking describes a '16-lock engineering marvel spanning 106 miles'. The staircase lifts ships to the 406 m continental divide, the highest point on any commercial waterway; the final section opened in 1992. Nuremberg sits on it. That is why Avalon, Uniworld, Tauck, Riverside and Celebrity can start Danube cruises there, and why the Amsterdam–Budapest routes exist at all. Some chambers fit a single ship, and aft cabins notice the bumps.

The six itineraries on sale

Every Danube brochure reduces to one of these. The names change by line; the river does not.

The classic week: Passau, Vilshofen or Regensburg to Budapest, 7 nights

The core Upper Danube product and Celebrity's pick for first-timers. Viking sells it as Danube Waltz (Budapest–Passau) and Romantic Danube (Budapest–Regensburg), Uniworld as Enchanting Danube, AmaWaterways and Avalon from Vilshofen. Emerald calls it Danube Delights (Budapest–Regensburg, coached to Munich), Tauck Heart of the Danube, Riverside sails it on Mozart, and Celebrity starts from Vilshofen on Seeker from 2027. Typical calls: Passau, Linz, Melk or Dürnstein and the Wachau, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest.

Season

When to go — and what 2026 taught everyone

Lines sail the Upper Danube roughly March to December, busiest June through September. AmaWaterways lists Romantic Danube departures even in February. The Lower Danube is sold late spring to early fall. Celebrity's advice is spring through fall for the upper river, with the Wachau's wine-harvest colour in autumn, and late November to December for the markets.

Summer 2026 was a low-water year. By mid-July Reuters had the Budapest gauge within 8 cm of record lows, and AmaWaterways said the Romanian Danube hit a 30-year low. Avalon cancelled 'a small number' of departures; Viking, AmaWaterways and Uniworld ran ship swaps, coach legs and alternate embarkation points. On 30 September Viking still listed sections of the Danube as 'abnormally low', and AmaWaterways' travel-updates page was flagging 'select itinerary adjustments' on 20 October.

The Danube's chain of dams keeps it steadier than the Rhine — Ama says it plans routes around that — but steadier is not immune. Late summer is the month to insure, not the month to avoid.

For the markets, Vienna's Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt runs 13 November to 26 December 2026, 10:00–22:00, closing 18:30 on Christmas Eve. Budapest's Vörösmarty and Basilica fairs opened 14 November in 2025; the 2026 dates are 13 November to 31 December for Vörösmarty and 13 November to 1 January for the Basilica fair, as published on 20 October 2026. Tauck warns market dates can change, and its packing list runs to a winter coat and lightweight gloves.

What each line does when the river drops

  • VikingIts tool is the 'ship swap' — identical sister ships sailing the same itinerary in opposite directions, so guests and luggage move to 'their exact same stateroom' on the twin beyond the shallow section; guests and advisors are notified before departure.Source
  • AmaWaterwaysAdjustments 'may include changes to ports, embarkation or disembarkation locations, motorcoach transfers, ship scheduling' — in practice a sister-ship swap during a shore excursion with luggage pre-placed, a reversed course, an added city stay or a coached leg, with at least 14 days' notice; it says it 'hasn't canceled a single departure' in summer 2026.Source
  • UniworldWith Rhine, Main and Danube levels below seasonal norms it decides on the latest river data; the options are 'alternate embarkation points, a different ship, a well-chosen hotel stay, or motorcoach transfers', with October departures each under review.Source
  • Avalon WaterwaysTrade reporting in July 2026 said Avalon cancelled a small number of Rhine and Danube departures, and that some ships stopped up to a 90-minute drive short of Budapest.Source

Which side, which direction

No line says a side matters, and River Cruise Advisor's standing advice is that it doesn't. Ships pass sights at unpredictable hours, the sun deck is 30 seconds away, and staff announce the Wachau over the PA. Direction matters more: Roaming Boomers notes an upstream ship (Budapest toward Passau) pushes against the current at higher RPM, so aft cabins feel more vibration at night — pick downstream, or a forward cabin if sailing up. Budapest at night is the one viewing moment every line schedules, and it is best taken from the top deck, not a cabin.

What it costs

What the lines publish

These are the lead fares each line's own page showed on 21 October 2026, per person, quoted as published. AmaWaterways' US Romantic Danube page displayed no fare that day — only port charges of $250 (2026), $280 (2027) and $290 (2028) — so it is not in the table. Price your own dates before treating any of these as a lock.

Start cities

Where you can start

Seven cities turn a ship around on this river: Budapest, Vienna, Passau, Vilshofen, Nuremberg, Regensburg and Bucharest — where the ship is an hour's coach away at Giurgiu or Oltenița. Each has its own guide (docks, airport, the day before) and a pre-cruise hotel hub.

Embarkation cityBudapestBudapest is the Danube's best sail-in and its least predictable berth — your ship is somewhere on the Pest embankment, and which pier is decided late. The embarkation guide Embarkation cityViennaFew berths on the Danube are as predictable as Vienna's, and few are pictured so wrong. The ships are on the main river in the 2nd district — a U-Bahn ride from the Ring, not beside it.The embarkation guide Embarkation cityPassauA three-river town with three separate cruise landings and no airport of its own. Most guests land in Munich — and four of the lines that 'start in Passau' board you in Vilshofen, about 25 km upstream. The embarkation guide Embarkation cityNurembergThe ship is not in town. Nuremberg's cruise port sits on the Main-Danube Canal in the southern harbour district, a 15–20 minute taxi from the old town. That makes it the most predictable embarkation on the Danube — and the one where you sleep in the city, not near the quay. The embarkation guide Embarkation cityRegensburgThe ships tie up on the Donaulände 'at the edge of the historic old town' — bayernhafen's phrase — and an hourly airport express runs straight in from Munich. Quick answers

Danube river cruise questions

When is the best time for a Danube river cruise?

Celebrity's guidance is spring through fall for the Upper Danube, with autumn's wine harvest colouring the Wachau, and late November to December for the market sailings. The Lower Danube is sold late spring to early fall. June through September is the busiest and hottest window. Summer 2026 showed the late-summer risk: the Budapest gauge came within 8 cm of record lows in July, and Viking, AmaWaterways and Uniworld were still adjusting itineraries into October. For markets, Vienna's Rathausplatz runs 13 November to 26 December 2026.

How many days do I need?

The standard product is 7 nights between Passau, Vilshofen or Regensburg and Budapest — what Celebrity calls the best first river cruise. Nuremberg starts add the canal and Regensburg within the same week. Lower Danube trips run 7–10 nights plus a Bucharest hotel night. Amsterdam–Budapest is 15 days with Viking or Tauck. Tauck's shortest is a 6-day Essence of the Danube; Riverside sells Mozart sailings from 3 nights.

Which direction should I sail — upstream or downstream?

The Danube flows west to east, so Passau to Budapest is downstream. Celebrity says the two directions 'feel largely the same' — ships sail day and night and the tours are identical. Roaming Boomers argues downstream is quieter. Upstream the engines work harder against the current and aft cabins feel it at night, so pick downstream or a forward cabin. Most lines sell both directions on alternating weeks. That is what makes sister-ship swaps possible in low water.

What happens if the river is too low?

Viking moves guests to the identical stateroom on a sister ship sailing the opposite direction beyond the shallow stretch. AmaWaterways does the same during a shore excursion with luggage pre-placed; it may also reverse course, add a city stay or coach one leg, and says it cancelled nothing in summer 2026. Uniworld lists alternate embarkation points, a different ship, a hotel stay or motorcoach transfers. In summer 2026 Avalon cancelled a small number of departures and some ships stopped up to 90 minutes short of Budapest. None of the four says anything about high water or flooding.

Rhine or Danube for a first river cruise?

Celebrity calls the Upper Danube the most popular route and the better choice for first-timers: four countries, two imperial capitals, the Wachau, no repacking. A 2026 Rhine-versus-Danube comparison puts it simply. The Rhine wins on daytime scenery — 40-plus castles in 64 km of the Middle Rhine Gorge — and relaxed small towns. The Danube wins on big cities, music and art, and on extensions: Prague or Romania against Lucerne or Amsterdam. If Vienna and Budapest are what you care about, it is the Danube.

What should I pack?

For the December market sailings Tauck says a winter coat, plus a coat and sweater for the sun deck and touring, and lightweight gloves. Summer runs hot and busy on the Upper Danube. The Lower Danube is sold for warm weather, so plan for sun on deck. Whatever the month, keep your passport in your day bag — Bucharest's Palace of Parliament refuses entry without a physical passport or ID card.
