The ship is an hour away
Before you board, viaBucharest
Bucharest is a hotel city, not a river city. The ship waits about an hour south on the Danube, and the coach that gets you there is the whole logistics problem — everything else is easy.
- 2 landingsGiurgiu or Oltenița — neither is in Bucharest
- ~60 kmcity centre to Giurgiu, about an hour by road
- ~20 minairport train to Gara de Nord, every 40 minutes
- 6 linesstart or end a Danube cruise here
In short
The 30-second version
The ship is not in Bucharest. It sits on the Danube roughly an hour south — at Giurgiu for Uniworld, AmaWaterways and Emerald, at Oltenița for Celebrity and for Avalon's Balkan Discovery.
You fly into Henri Coandă, north of the centre. The docks are another 60–65 km south of the city. Airport and ship sit on opposite sides of town, and every route to the river runs through it.
Most lines carry the awkward part. Emerald and Celebrity fold a Bucharest hotel night and the coach into the fare. Uniworld coaches disembarking guests up from Giurgiu to a two-night stay. Viking includes ground transfers only with Viking Air.
Give the city one night at minimum — that is what Celebrity, Emerald and Avalon include. The Palace of Parliament wants a phone booking 24 hours ahead and a physical passport. It belongs on the afternoon you land, not the morning of the coach.
Sleep on Calea Victoriei or beside the Palace of Parliament. Both are a walk from the Old Town. The Parliament side is also the south side, the direction the coach leaves.
The berths
Where the ship is
Two Romanian landings serve Bucharest, and one line keeps its choice to itself. Neither landing has a published quay name.
Giurgiu
On the Danube's left bank, facing Ruse in Bulgaria across the Friendship Bridge. CruiseMapper puts it roughly 60 km (40 mi) south of Bucharest, about an hour by road. Travel42 says 63 km — buses take just over an hour, direct trains at least two and a half.
Uniworld, AmaWaterways, Emerald Cruises, Scenic (per CruiseMapper's schedule)
SourceOltenița
A river port where the Argeș meets the Danube, in Călărași County, with Bulgaria across the water. Liveaboard puts Bucharest about 65 km north. Celebrity boards Celebrity Compass here from 2028 after a motor-coach ride from the city, and Avalon sells its Balkan Discovery 'Budapest to Oltenita'.
Celebrity River Cruises (from 2028), Avalon Waterways
SourceUnnamed — Viking
Viking's Passage to Eastern Europe ends with Days 10–11 in Bucharest and never names the river landing. A 2016 River Cruise Advisor report of the same trip boarded Viking Embla 'just outside of town on the River Danube' after lunch in the city. Still no port named.
Viking River Cruises
SourceNo line publishes an embarkation window at Giurgiu or Oltenița, and none names a berth. The coach does that work for you. A private operator sold through Viator quotes the hotel-to-dock run at about 1 hour 30 minutes, 'depending on the time of day and traffic conditions'. Treat CruiseMapper's hour as the floor, not the plan.

Getting there
Getting in: the airport is on the wrong side of town
Henri Coandă sits north of the centre and the river is south of it. Whatever you choose, you cross Bucharest.
Fly into
Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (Otopeni) OTP
World Travel Guide puts Henri Coandă 16.5 km (10.5 mi) north of central Bucharest. The JW Marriott calls it about 18.7 km and roughly a 30-minute drive from its hotel beside the Palace of Parliament.
- Train
The airport train, about 20 minutes
Direct trains leave from the station on the ground floor of Arrivals for Gara de Nord — about 20 minutes, around the clock, every 40 minutes, per the airport. The airport lists no fare; World Travel Guide quotes 6.80 lei single. Metro line M6 to the airport is still under construction with no opening date published. Don't plan around it.
Source - Taxi
Authorised taxis, metered
Queue outside the terminal, or use the touchscreen kiosks on Arrivals floor 1. They print a ticket with the cab's call sign, plate and tariff. The airport publishes 2.29–3.50 lei per km; World Travel Guide quotes 25–45 lei (about €5–12) and 20–50 minutes to the centre. Ride-hail pickup moved to the Departures level on 23 April 2026.
Source - Bus
Express line 100
STB's express line 100 runs to the city centre every 15 minutes by day and every 30 at night. A 90-minute metropolitan ticket is 3 lei, paid by contactless bank card, STB card or SMS — and during works the buses stop only at the 'Plecări' (Departures) stop.
Source - Line transfer
Let the line do it
Uniworld names Henri Coandă for its departure transfer, sold only with a Uniworld transfer booking. Emerald includes airport transfers to and from the ship; Viking includes ground transfers only with Viking Air. Celebrity's page names no airport and sells Flights by Celebrity separately.
Source - Taxi
A private car to the dock, if you booked your own hotel
A Viator/AAA-listed transfer 'Bucharest – Danube docks (Giurgiu or Oltenita)' sells from about $75.70–$98. It lists 1 hour 30 minutes door to dock, 'approximate... depending on the time of day and traffic'. The fallback for cruisers who skipped the line's hotel package, not the default.

What the lines say about transfers
- UniworldGrand Highlights of the Danube disembarks at Giurgiu on Day 15 and coaches guests to a two-night Bucharest hotel, with a Communist-era city tour and a Palace of Parliament visit; the Henri Coandă departure transfer comes only if booked with Uniworld.
- Emerald CruisesEnchantment of Eastern Europe includes one pre-cruise Bucharest hotel night, the Day 2 'Bucharest – Giurgiu' transfer and airport transfers to and from the Star-Ship.
- Celebrity River CruisesThe 2028 Bucharest–Budapest sailing includes a night at the InterContinental Athénée Palace and says 'guests will be transported to and from the ship in Oltenita to Bucharest'.
- AmaWaterwaysThe UK page for Gems of Southeast Europe includes 'group overseas transfers to and from the ship' at Giurgiu.
- VikingGround transfers come only with a Viking Air purchase, and the river landing is not named.
- Avalon WaterwaysBalkan Discovery includes one Bucharest hotel night but says nothing about coach or airport transfers — ask before you assume.
The day before
The day before the coach
One night is the standard allowance, and the Parliament tour wants a day's notice. Order matters more here than in most cities.

Tour the Palace of the Parliament — and bring your passport
Ceaușescu's palace opens to visitors daily 09:00–17:00 with a parliamentary guide. Adults pay 85 lei, and groups of 1–9 book by phone at least 24 hours ahead. Arrive 15 minutes early with a physical passport or national ID card — driver's licences are refused. Expect airport-style screening of people and bags, with no liquids inside.

Dinner at Caru' cu Bere, with Stavropoleos first
The 19th-century beer hall on Strada Stavropoleos serves pork knuckle and the Romanian classics daily from 09:00 to midnight, with folk-dance shows 19:00–22:00. Book ahead; it fills. Stavropoleos Church is next door — a tiny 1724 Orthodox church with a frescoed interior and marble-arcaded cloister. Look in before you sit down.
Source - 03
The Romanian Athenaeum, by concert if you can
The domed 1888 hall is home to the George Enescu Philharmonic and sits directly across from the InterContinental Athénée Palace. Visiting hours outside concerts are limited and variable. Daytime tickets are cash-only (10 lei) at Casa Ateneului on Strada Constantin Esarcu — check the official site before you walk over.

The Village Museum in Herăstrău Park, on arrival day
The open-air National Village Museum gathers real peasant houses, churches and windmills on the lake in Herăstrău Park, roughly halfway between the centre and the airport. Adults 30 lei. Open daily 09:00–19:00 but closing at 17:00 on Mondays; allow two hours. Viking's Passage to Eastern Europe includes it, so skip it if your line does.

Cișmigiu Gardens, then Calea Victoriei on foot
Cișmigiu, laid out in 1847, is free and open round the clock, with a lake, writers' statues and rowing boats in summer. From there Calea Victoriei runs past the CEC Palace, Revolution Square and the Athenaeum toward the Old Town. Celebrity's own pre-cruise notes name Calea Victoriei, the Palace of Parliament and the Old Town as the things to see with one night. This walk covers two of them.

Therme Bucharest, only with a spare afternoon
The thermal-spa complex sits north of the city beyond the airport, about 30–40 minutes by taxi from the centre. The Elysium adult floor has saunas and a solarium; a 4.5-hour ticket was quoted at 155 lei (about €30). Book online a few weeks ahead in peak season. Hours run to 23:00 most nights and midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Things to do in Bucharest
Three bookings that solve a real Bucharest problem rather than fill a gap in the day.
- Private transfer from a Bucharest hotel to the Danube docks at Giurgiu or OltenițaFor cruisers who booked their own hotel rather than the line's package, and want the dock run handled.
- Palace of Parliament skip-the-line tour with guideTakes the phone booking off your plate — the passport rule still applies at the door.
- Evening Old Town food and wine walk with Romanian winesA low-commitment way to taste the country's wines and the Lipscani lanes before an early coach morning.

Where to stay
Where to sleep
Our six picks are in our Bucharest pre-cruise hotels guide. The Corinthia Grand Hotel du Boulevard is the grand night, the InterContinental Athénée Palace is the hotel Celebrity itself books, and the JW Marriott is the quiet logistics pick on the south side where the coach leaves.
Calea Victoriei / Revolution Square (Sector 1)
The grand boulevard holds the Athenaeum, Revolution Square and the Michelin-Key hotels — the InterContinental Athénée Palace, the Corinthia at the Elisabeta Boulevard corner, the Radisson Blu at 63–81. All are a walk from the Old Town. It is the obvious one-night base before a morning coach.
Old Town / Lipscani (Centrul Vechi)
The pedestrian core, with Caru' cu Bere, Stavropoleos Church and the Macca-Villacrosse passage. The Marmorosch sits in a 19th-century bank building on Strada Doamnei at its edge. Lively at night — light sleepers should ask for a courtyard-facing room.
Palace of Parliament / Unirii (Sector 5)
The JW Marriott sits beside the Palace of Parliament and the People's Salvation Cathedral, walkable to the Old Town. The hotel puts the airport about 30 minutes away. This is the south side of the city — the way the coach heads for Giurgiu and Oltenița.

When
The Lower Danube is mostly sold late spring through early fall, so most Bucharest arrivals are warm ones. Not all. AmaWaterways' UK page lists Giurgiu turnarounds in November and December 2026 (2, 16, 22 and 30 November; 14 and 28 December) and again from late March 2027, and Emerald's 2028 Bucharest departures start in early April — pack for a cold coach in those months. We're not publishing Bucharest's Christmas-market dates or its hotel-filling events, so confirm both before you fix a date.

Quick answers
Bucharest river cruise questions
Where do river cruise ships dock for Bucharest?
Not in Bucharest. Uniworld, AmaWaterways and Emerald use Giurgiu, on the Danube opposite Ruse in Bulgaria. CruiseMapper puts it about 60 km (40 mi) south of the capital, roughly an hour's drive. Celebrity (from 2028) and Avalon's Balkan Discovery use Oltenița, about 65 km south at the Argeș confluence. Viking lists Bucharest as its start and end city without naming the landing.
How do I get from the airport to the ship?
Through the city. Henri Coandă (OTP) is about 16.5 km north of the centre and the docks are 60–65 km south of it. The airport train reaches Gara de Nord in about 20 minutes, every 40 minutes around the clock; authorised taxis are metered at 2.29–3.50 lei per km. From a central hotel the line's coach takes you to Giurgiu or Oltenița. Emerald and Celebrity include the hotel night and the coach, Uniworld coaches Giurgiu guests up to a two-night stay, and Viking includes transfers only with Viking Air.
Is one night in Bucharest enough?
One night is what Celebrity, Emerald and Avalon include, and Uniworld gives two on disembarkation. With a single night, Celebrity's own notes point you to Calea Victoriei, the Palace of Parliament and the Old Town. The Parliament tour needs a day's notice by phone. Plan it for the afternoon you land, or add a second night.
Which neighbourhood should I stay in?
Calea Victoriei and Revolution Square hold the three Michelin-Key hotels (Corinthia, InterContinental Athénée Palace, and the Marmorosch just off it), a walk from the Old Town. Celebrity books the Athénée Palace for its included night, which makes it the easy default. The JW Marriott by the Palace of Parliament is on the south side, the direction the coach leaves.
Is there an all-aboard time at Giurgiu or Oltenița?
No line publishes one, and none names a berth. Your deadline is the coach, not the gangway. The line sets the hotel pickup, and that pickup is the time to plan around. If you booked outside the line's package, a Viator-listed private transfer quotes about 1 hour 30 minutes from a city hotel to either dock, depending on traffic.
What does the Palace of Parliament visit involve?
Visits run daily 09:00–17:00 with a parliamentary guide. Adults pay 85 lei, and small groups book by phone at least 24 hours in advance. You show a physical passport or national ID (driver's licences are refused), arrive 15 minutes early and pass security screening of people and bags. Liquids are not allowed inside. Uniworld includes a Palace visit on its disembarkation programme.
