Overview
A river line that cooks like it means it
Some travellers book a river cruise for the castles. Ama's guests tend to book it for the castles and the four-course dinner afterwards.
AmaWaterways launched in 2002 and has stayed river-only — no ocean ships, no expedition arm. It now runs 31 river ships across Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, and it was the first river line on Colombia's Magdalena. Its own European ships carry roughly 102 to 196 guests.
The kitchen is the headline. Most ships have a Chef's Table restaurant, with one included wine-paired tasting dinner per cruise, and the line hosts a La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs dinner on board — a gastronomic society, not a marketing label.
The second identity is movement. Every port offers tours at three activity levels, bikes come free in Europe, and Wellness Hosts lead daily classes. It's a full day, not a lazy one.

Lead fares per person as each line published them; the line under each bar keeps the line’s own wording. “A night” is our arithmetic: the lead fare divided by the trip’s nights (days minus one, hotel nights included where the package has them), before taxes and port charges. Your dates will price differently. That’s the job we do for free.
The ships
Twin Balconies and one very wide ship
Ama's standard European ships share one big idea in the cabin. Its flagship rethinks the hull instead.
AmaMagna and the Twin Balcony fleet
Most European Ama ships carry about 156 to 174 guests, and most cabins are Twin Balconies of roughly 210 to 235 sq ft. AmaMagna, added in 2019, is about twice the width of a standard Danube ship — 196 guests, 98 crew and four dining venues. A second double-width ship, AmaRudi, is due on the Danube in 2027.
Twin Balcony
A full-height French balcony plus a separate step-out balcony with seating for two. You get the open door and somewhere to sit.
Chef's Table
A small tasting-menu restaurant with an open kitchen. One wine-paired dinner per cruise is included — reserve it early, since seats are few.
AmaMagna's four venues
The main restaurant, Chef's Table, Jimmy's Wine Bar and Al Fresco, plus a large gym and a pickleball court. Danube only, because the width won't fit most locks.
Pools and bikes
Heated pools with swim-up bars on some ships, and a fleet of bikes for use in port on European sailings.

The Ama difference
Three walking levels, every port
Ama's real innovation is choice, not the bikes themselves.
Every port offers included tours at three levels — gentle, general and active. Gentle groups move mostly by coach with little walking. Active groups cycle or hike. Couples who travel at different speeds can split up for the morning and meet back aboard for lunch.
Wellness Hosts run daily stretching, yoga and strength classes, and some itineraries are co-run with Backroads for guests who want serious cycling. Ama also partners with Adventures by Disney for family sailings and, from 2026, with Smithsonian Journeys.
Ask which level the included tour in each port actually offers before you book a mobility-sensitive trip — the gentle option exists, though it isn't identical everywhere.

The Twin Balcony is the reason to care about Ama's cabins. The real question is whether the lower deck, a suite or AmaMagna is worth the gap for your dates.

Dedicated solo cabins on four ships — no paying double for a room built for two. They're few, so they sell early.

AmaMagna Grand or Owner's Suite
Six Grand Suites of about 474 sq ft and one Owner's Suite of about 710 sq ft. Standard Ama suites run 300 to 350 sq ft on regular ships; AmaMagna, and from 2027 AmaRudi, are the routes to more.

Lower-deck Stateroom
A fixed window set high on the wall, near the waterline. Fine if the saving is large — on a scenic river, the Twin Balcony is usually worth the step up.

The honest downsides

Gratuities and off-hours drinks sit outside the fare.
Meals, wine at lunch and dinner, cocktail hour and tours are covered. Crew tips, premium pours and a few special excursions aren't. On a seven-night sailing, suggested crew tips alone run roughly €125 per person — price the whole week before comparing Ama with a line that bundles tips.

The active streak only pays if you use it.
If you'll skip the bikes, the hikes and the wellness classes, you're paying for programming you won't touch. A quieter line, Viking for instance, may suit you just as well for less.

Family departures change the mood on those dates.
Adventures by Disney sailings bring children aboard, with connecting cabins and extra beds. Adults wanting a child-free week should check the departure isn't one of them — Viking is the line that guarantees it.

Book it to eat well and stay busy
In our view, AmaWaterways makes the strongest case on the river for a busy day and a serious dinner. The Twin Balcony is a better cabin than most rivals' French balcony, the Chef's Table is included, and the three walking levels let mixed-ability couples travel together.
Know what you're buying. Tips and premium drinks are extra, and the value rests on using what makes Ama different. If you won't, a quieter line costs less.
Shortlist two sailings on the same river — one standard Twin Balcony ship, one AmaMagna date — and price the gap. That single comparison usually settles which Ama trip is yours.
