The Rhine's southern turnaround
Starting a Rhine cruise inBasel
Basel usually gives you the whole embarkation day — Uniworld's all-aboard is 9:00 pm. The catch is knowing which of three landings you're heading for, and on which bank.
- 3landing stages, St. Johann to the border triangle
- 7–10 minbetween Bus 50 departures from EuroAirport
- CHF 2an adult crossing on the current-driven Rhine ferries
- 26 Nov–23 DecBasler Weihnachtsmarkt, 2026
In short
Basel, briefly
Ships use one of three landings. St. Johann is on the Old Town bank, about 15 minutes' walk downstream of Marktplatz. Klybeck and Dreiländereck are on the Kleinbasel side, out in the harbour docklands near where Switzerland, France and Germany meet.
Which one you get can change by date, even on the same ship. Uniworld moves River Duchess and S.S. Antoinette between St. Johann and Klybeck from one departure to the next.
Fly into EuroAirport and leave by the Swiss exit. Bus 50 reaches Basel SBB station in about 20 minutes; a taxi covers the rest of the distance to the river.
One night is enough when the all-aboard is that late. Two let you spend a museum day on the Basel Card that overnight guests receive.
The berths
Three landings, two banks
Basel Tourism counts three landing stages — in St. Johann, in Klybeck and directly at the border triangle. About 100,000 cabin-ship guests come through them each year.
St. Johann (Steiger 1 and 2), St. Johanns-Rheinweg 109
On the Grossbasel bank by St. Johanns-Park, downstream of the Old Town. Basel Tourism calls it ten minutes on foot from the centre; Celebrity makes it 15 minutes, or 0.7 miles, from Marktplatz, or four stops on Tram 11. It's the closest of the three to the airport bus.
Celebrity River Cruises, Uniworld (River Duchess 25 Nov; S.S. Antoinette 31 Oct and 16 Dec 2026)
SourceKlybeck (Klybeckquai 2), Uferstrasse 1 and 80
On the Kleinbasel bank in the Klybeck harbour district, which Celebrity describes as industrial docklands. It's 1.7 miles from Marktplatz — 35 minutes on foot, or Tram 8 and a 10-minute walk. A taxi takes about 13 minutes.
Uniworld (S.S. Antoinette, most departures; River Duchess 9 Dec 2026)
SourceDreiländereck (Steiger 3), Westquaistrasse 75
At the Kleinhüningen Rhine port, by the border triangle. The furthest out: 2.2 miles from Marktplatz, a 47-minute walk, or Tram 8 and a 15-minute walk. About 14 minutes by taxi.
Uniworld (S.S. Elisabeth and S.S. Victoria, every departure)

All five embark in Basel, and none publishes which landing it uses. Ask before you choose a hotel, because the landing decides the bank.

Getting there
EuroAirport, by the Swiss exit
The airport sits on French soil with a Swiss sector and a French one. Use the Swiss side: that's where the Basel bus and the Swiss taxis wait, and where you pay in francs.
Fly into
EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg BSL / MLH
Celebrity puts the drive at about 13 minutes to St. Johann, and about 15 minutes, or 5.5 miles, to Klybeck and Dreiländereck.
- Bus
Bus 50 from the Swiss sector
BVB Bus 50 leaves the forecourt on the Swiss-sector side of Arrivals from 04:30 to midnight and reaches Basel SBB in about 20 minutes. For St. Johann, Celebrity's route is four stops, then a 15-minute walk — or change to Tram 1 or Bus 36 and cut the walk to nine. The airport doesn't publish the fare.
Source - Taxi
Swiss-side taxi
EuroAirport lists about CHF 50 between the airport and the city centre. It's the only sensible choice for Klybeck and Dreiländereck — Celebrity says transit to both means several changes and long walks, and isn't practical with luggage.
Source - Train
By rail, then the last mile
Coming in by train through Basel SBB? St. Johann is 14 minutes on Bus 30 or 17 on Tram 11. Klybeck and Dreiländereck are about 20 minutes on Tram 8, plus a 10- or 15-minute walk, and a taxi does any of the three in 11 to 15 minutes.
Source - Line transfer
Only with the line's air
Viking includes round-trip transfers only when you buy its air, and AmaWaterways only for flights booked through AmaAir. Uniworld, Avalon, Tauck and Riverside don't publish Basel transfer terms.

What the lines say about transfers
- Viking River Cruises'Roundtrip airport transfers are included when air is purchased with a cruise or cruisetour package'; otherwise they're sold separately.
- AmaWaterwaysAirport-to-ship transfers come with flights booked through AmaAir, on standard arrival dates.
The day before
A Basel day before the ship
The Old Town is compact and the river does half the entertaining. Keep the day on foot and save the taxi for the bags.
- 01
Marktplatz to the Münster terrace
Start at the red 16th-century Rathaus on Marktplatz and climb through the medieval lanes to the 12th-century cathedral. The Münster terrace above the Rhine is where the walk wants to end.

Cross on a ferry the current pushes
Four small ferries — Wild Maa, Leu, Vogel Gryff and Ueli — hang from a cable and cross on the current alone. The Münster ferry Leu runs 11:00–17:00 in winter, from the last Sunday in October, and 09:00–20:00 in summer. All four stop when the Rhine runs above 7.9 m.

Dinner at Cheval Blanc
The restaurant at Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois holds three Michelin stars. Book the table when you book the flight. For something to carry aboard, Celebrity's tip is Basler Läckerli, the city's spiced gingerbread.

An evening on the Kleinbasel bank
Cross the Mittlere Brücke to the Rheingasse, where Krafft sits on the water facing the Old Town and the cathedral. It's the place to watch the river traffic the night before you join it.

Museums on the Basel Card
Basel has more than 40 museums, and Art Basel began here. Overnight visitors get free public transport and free or reduced museum entry on the card. If a headline show is on at the Fondation Beyeler or the Kunstmuseum, book online first.

The Weihnachtsmarkt, for late-season sailings
Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz both run 11:00–20:30 daily, with a food court on Claraplatz. On the last day, 23 December, Barfüsserplatz closes at 20:00 and Münsterplatz at 18:00. It overlaps the late-November and December Riverside and Uniworld departures.

Things to do in Basel
Basel is easy on your own, so pre-book only what saves a step.
- Old Town walking tour with the Münster and RathausTwo hours or so through the quarter closest to the St. Johann landing, with someone to explain it.
- Rhine boat trip with commentary or dinnerThe ferries cost CHF 2 on your own. A paid river trip earns its price only if someone is talking or cooking.
- Half-day in Alsace or the Black ForestCelebrity puts both about an hour away — a good use of a second night.

Where to stay
Five hotels for the night before
Our Basel pre-cruise hotel hub has five picks across both banks. Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, with three MICHELIN Keys and the Rhine under its windows, leads it, and Krafft is the riverfront alternative at a gentler rate.
Grossbasel Old Town (Marktplatz and the Münster)
The medieval core, with Les Trois Rois on the riverfront. Same bank as the St. Johann landing and within walking distance of it.
Kleinbasel (Rheingasse and Rebgasse)
The right bank, with the better view back to the Old Town. Krafft is on the water and Volkshaus a few streets behind. It's also the bank for Klybeck and Dreiländereck — a short taxi downstream.
Around Basel SBB (Centralbahnplatz)
Bus 50 from the airport ends here, and Bus 30 or Tram 11 run on to St. Johann. Hotel Euler faces the station, which suits anyone coming in by rail.

When
Late-season sailings are Basel's best timed. Riverside runs Christmas departures to Frankfurt and Düsseldorf from 25 November 2026, the day before the market opens. Uniworld flags low water on sections of the Rhine, Main and Danube that may change some sailings. Check your departure's status the week you fly.

Quick answers
Basel river cruise questions
Which Basel landing will my ship use?
One of three: St. Johann on St. Johanns-Rheinweg, Klybeck on Uferstrasse or Dreiländereck on Westquaistrasse. Uniworld publishes its landing per ship and date, and Celebrity uses St. Johann. The other lines don't say, so check your documents.
Is EuroAirport in France or Switzerland?
France, physically. It has a Swiss sector and a French sector. The Basel bus and the Swiss taxis leave from the Swiss side, and you pay there in Swiss francs; on the French side it's euros.
Can I take public transport to the ship?
To St. Johann, yes — Bus 50 into the city, then a tram or a short walk. To Klybeck or Dreiländereck, not with luggage. Celebrity calls transit there impractical with bags, and a taxi takes about a quarter of an hour.
How many nights should I spend in Basel first?
One, with a second for a museum day. The all-aboard is late — Uniworld's is 9:00 pm — so the embarkation day is yours. Without a night in hand, though, a delayed connection leaves no margin at all.
Grossbasel or Kleinbasel?
Grossbasel for the Old Town and the walk to St. Johann. Kleinbasel for the view back across the river and the shorter ride to Klybeck and Dreiländereck. Stay by Basel SBB if you're arriving by train.
