When ultra-luxury Crystal River Cruises collapsed with its parent company in 2022, its exceptional fleet didn't rot at the dock — it was bought up by the Seaside Collection, a German luxury-hotel group with decades in high-end hospitality, and relaunched from 2023 as Riverside Luxury Cruises. That inheritance is the whole story: these ships were built to Crystal's exacting ultra-luxury spec, so Riverside never had to nervously test whether it could do luxury river cruising. It arrived fully formed — hardware, much of the crew, and all — and picked up a Travel + Leisure World's Best award after a single year on the water.

The positioning is refreshingly blunt: Riverside wants to be the river-going equivalent of Silversea or Regent Seven Seas — all-suite, all-inclusive, and defined above everything else by space and personal service. It runs the roomiest ships on Europe's rivers, puts a butler in every suite, and staffs at a ratio approaching a crew member for every guest. People who sail it tend not to describe a cruise at all; they describe a luxury boutique hotel that happens to change its view every morning — residential, calm, understated, leaning on Seaside's hotel DNA rather than the ornate flourishes or gadgetry its rivals reach for.

Where most river ships carry around 150 guests and up to 190, Riverside's vessels carry far fewer for their size, which makes them the roomiest on Europe's rivers. Suites range from about 190 square feet up to a remarkable 833 square feet — the largest average suite size in river cruising — most with a separate sitting area, walk-in closets, king beds, and marble bathrooms with double vanities. The signature Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy Suites run 500 to 750 square feet and add fireplaces and panoramic balcony-windows. Paired with roughly one crew member per suite and a butler for every guest, that space translates into a deeply residential, unhurried experience — less a cabin you retreat to and more an apartment you live in as the continent drifts past. For travelers whose definition of luxury is room to breathe, no river line does it better.

It's a new brand, even if the ships aren't. Riverside only began sailing in 2023, so it doesn't yet have the decade-deep track record of Viking, Ama, or Uniworld. The ships and their Crystal pedigree are proven, and early reviews are excellent, but the operating company is still young — a small consideration for travelers who take comfort in a long, established history. So far the signs are very good; just know you're booking a brand still writing its story.

“Suite” doesn't always mean what you'd expect. Like most river lines, Riverside calls all its cabins suites, but the entry categories are elegant single-space rooms with a French balcony rather than true multi-room suites. It's a fair marketing convention across the industry — but at Riverside's ultra-luxury price, it's worth being clear-eyed that the true separate-living-room experience lives in the larger, pricier categories.

And it's a small fleet at a big price. With just three ships (two more to come), Riverside offers far fewer itineraries, dates, and rivers than Viking or AmaWaterways, and it sits firmly at the top of the market on price. You're paying a premium for space and service, not for choice or value — a worthwhile trade for the right traveler, but the wrong line if breadth of options or a gentler fare is what you need.
