Where the Saône meets the Rhône

Joining the ship in Lyon

Lyon is where the Saône runs into the Rhône, and where most Provence weeks begin or end. Only one quay is published by name. It's on the Rhône, facing the Presqu'île — so plan the city first and the berth second.

In short

Lyon in thirty seconds

Uniworld boards every Lyon departure at Quai Claude Bernard, on the Rhône's left bank in the 7th arrondissement. CroisiEurope uses the same quay.

Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Riverside, Scenic and Tauck all start or call here too. None of them names a quay, so don't choose a hotel by its distance to one.

From Saint-Exupéry, the Rhônexpress tram runs to Part-Dieu. A taxi or the T1 covers the last stretch.

One night is enough when boarding runs into the evening. Take two if Beaujolais is on the list as well as Fourvière.

The berths

One named quay, on the Rhône

Lyon has two rivers and a great deal of riverbank. Only one cruise berth appears by name in a line's own boarding details.

Quai Claude Bernard, 69007 Lyon

On the Rhône's left bank in the 7th, between the Pont de l'Université and the Pont Gallieni — 'at the foot of the universities', in CroisiEurope's words. The Presqu'île is directly across the water. Tram T1 stops on the quay. Parking Berthelot, at 99 rue de Marseille, is open around the clock.

Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Riverside, Scenic and Tauck

Each embarks or calls in Lyon, and none publishes its quay. Quai Rambaud on the Saône is a landing for sightseeing boats, not a confirmed hotel-ship berth. Don't book near it on that basis.

CroisiEurope sends its boarding details with your travel documents and gives no embarkation time. On any other line, ask for the quay before you book the hotel, not after.

Getting there

Saint-Exupéry to the river

The airport has its own TGV station and a dedicated tram into the city. Taxis wait outside the terminals too.

Fly into

Lyon-Saint Exupéry LYS

Lyon Aéroports puts the airport about 25 km from the city centre; it publishes no distance to Quai Claude Bernard.

  • Train

    Rhônexpress to Part-Dieu

The tram leaves from the airport's TGV station and calls at Vaulx-en-Velin La Soie. Part-Dieu (exit 'Alpes') is under 30 minutes away. It runs 4:25 am to midnight daily — every 15 minutes in the day, every 30 before 6:00 am and after 9:00 pm. Under-12s ride free, buying online is cheaper and there's no luggage limit.

  • Taxi

    From the terminal rank

Taxis wait in front of the terminals. Unlike Paris, no flat airport fare is published. The price depends on conditions and the hour, and the airport can't book a car for you. It lists a Lyon taxi number, 04 72 22 70 90.

  • Viking River CruisesRound-trip airport transfers come with air bought from Viking; otherwise they're sold separately.
  • AmaWaterwaysAirport-to-ship transfers are included with flights booked through AmaAir, on standard arrival dates.

The day before

Lyon before you board

Lyon's best hours are on the Saône side. Spend them on the hill and in the old town below it. The ship is on the other river, so save the taxi for the evening.

  1. 01

    Fourvière, to begin

The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière stands on the hill above the Saône. It's the Lyon sight the river lines name first, and the natural place to start.

  2. 02

Vieux Lyon and St. Jean Cathedral

The Renaissance old town fills the Saône's right bank directly below Fourvière. St. Jean Cathedral is the other highlight on the lines' lists — come down from the basilica and you're in it.

  3. 03

    An hour on the Saône

Les Bateaux Lyonnais run sightseeing cruises from Quai Rambaud, on the Confluence side. A gentle look at both rivers before a week on one of them.

  4. 04

    Dinner on the hill

Villa Florentine and Villa Maïa each received a MICHELIN Key in 2024, and both sit above Vieux Lyon. Reserve the table when you book the room.

  5. 05

    Beaujolais, with a second night

The lines list Beaujolais wine country among Lyon's highlights. With two nights in hand, it's the obvious half day out of town.

  6. 06

The Fête des Lumières, in early December

The 2026 festival is planned for 5–8 December; France.fr still marks the dates 'to be confirmed'. About two million people came in 2025. Book beds early and travel by public transport.

Where to stay

Six hotels on the hill and the peninsula

Our Lyon pre-cruise hotel hub has six picks across the hill and the peninsula. The InterContinental Hôtel-Dieu leads, across the Rhône from the quay. Villa Florentine is the calmer night, up on Fourvière.

Vieux Lyon and Fourvière (5th arrondissement)

The old town and the hill above it, home to both MICHELIN Key hotels and Cour des Loges. It's on the far side of the Presqu'île from the berth, so plan a taxi on boarding day.

The Presqu'île (2nd: Bellecour and Hôtel-Dieu)

The peninsula between the two rivers, where the InterContinental and the Sofitel stand. Quai Claude Bernard is just across the Rhône.

The 7th, toward Perrache

The berth's own arrondissement, with CroisiEurope's coach stop at Perrache. A base for logistics rather than for a hotel — we don't list one here.

When

Navigation between Lyon and the Mediterranean stops each March for lock maintenance — 8–19 March in 2026 — so an early-spring date can change shape. Check it. Late autumn brings AmaWaterways' Taste of Christmas weeks, and its 24 December 2026 departure from Arles finishes here. If Rhônexpress is disrupted, a replacement bus runs via La Soie in about 55 minutes. For a December sailing, reserve the hotel before you buy the flights.

Quick answers

Lyon river cruise questions

Which Lyon quay is mine?

On Uniworld or CroisiEurope, Quai Claude Bernard on the Rhône, between the Pont de l'Université and the Pont Gallieni. The other lines don't publish one, so their berth is unconfirmed until your documents name it.

Is there a flat taxi fare from the airport?

Not a published one. Paris has fixed fares; Lyon Aéroports gives no typical price or journey time. Rhônexpress is the predictable option.

Can I get to the ship by public transport?

To Quai Claude Bernard, yes. Take Rhônexpress to Part-Dieu, then tram T1, which stops at the quay. With heavy bags, a taxi from Part-Dieu is easier.

Fourvière or the Presqu'île?

Fourvière and Vieux Lyon for the Key hotels and the old town. The Presqu'île for the shorter hop across the Rhône to the berth.

What changes on a December sailing?

The city fills for the Fête des Lumières. France.fr advises reserving accommodation as early as you can. On the river, AmaWaterways runs Taste of Christmas sailings from 19 November to 17 December 2026.
