The ship nobody has to explain
Ask a friend to picture a river cruise and they'll describe a Viking Longship without knowing it.
Viking started in 1997 with four ships in Russia. The Longship arrived in 2012 — about 443 feet long, 95 staterooms, 190 guests — and it has been repeated so many times since that it now defines the shape of a European river ship. As of October 2026 Viking runs more than 90 river ships, with 114 expected by 2028.
That scale is the product. Sail one Longship and you've effectively sailed them all — same layout, same menus in spirit, same included tour in every port.
There's no casino aboard, no children, and no pool. What you get instead is a quiet, grown-up ship pointed at the view. Condé Nast Traveler readers have ranked Viking #1 for rivers five years running, per Viking's own press materials — a popularity award, not a taste test, though it tells you how few people come home unhappy.

Lead fares per person as each line published them; the line under each bar keeps the line’s own wording. “A night” is our arithmetic: the lead fare divided by the trip’s nights (days minus one, hotel nights included where the package has them), before taxes and port charges. Your dates will price differently. That’s the job we do for free.
The ships
The Longship, repeated on purpose
One design does most of the work. A handful of smaller variants handle the rivers a Longship can't fit.
The Viking Longship
Introduced in 2012 and still being delivered — Viking Dagur arrived in July 2026. Each carries 190 guests in 95 staterooms on about 443 feet of hull. A patented square bow buys a third full deck, and an off-centre corridor makes room for true two-room suites on one side. The original design brief also called for hybrid engines, solar panels and an organic herb garden on the sun deck.
Aquavit Terrace
The indoor-outdoor space at the bow, with folding floor-to-ceiling glass. It doubles as a casual dining spot — no charge, no reservation.
The square bow
Viking's patented hull shape. It's the reason a Longship fits three full decks and the Aquavit Terrace inside standard river-ship dimensions.
Two-room suites
The asymmetric corridor lets Explorer Suites (about 445 sq ft) and Veranda Suites (about 275 sq ft) split sleeping and sitting areas — rare on a river ship.
River-specific sisters
Smaller purpose-built ships work the Douro (106 guests) and Elbe (98 guests). The Nile ships carry 52 to 82, and Viking Mississippi carries 386.

The Viking difference
Why identical ships matter in a dry summer
Sameness sounds like a criticism until the water drops.
The Rhine and Danube ran exceptionally low in 2026. Viking's executives pointed to their identical ships as a planning advantage — guests can be swapped between sister Longships at either side of a shallow stretch without anyone changing cabin category. When the Rhine got too low, Viking rerouted guests to Luxembourg and Brussels instead.
No river line can promise you'll never be bussed around a low-water section. A fleet of interchangeable ships does give Viking more ways to keep your week roughly intact — worth knowing if you're booking a late-summer sailing.

What’s in the price, and what isn’t
One shore excursion per port
A guided tour in every port, usually a panoramic or highlights walk. Premium and Privileged Access tours cost extra.
SourceWine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner
Poured at meals only. Outside mealtimes you pay by the drink or buy the Silver Spirits package.
SourceWi-Fi
Free and unlimited in Europe, Egypt and on the Mississippi; included but slower on the Mekong.
SourcePort taxes, coffee and enrichment
Port charges are in the fare, along with 24-hour specialty coffee and tea, daily lectures and onboard performances.

Cabins
Five cabin types, one real decision
A Longship has five categories — Standard, French Balcony, Veranda, Veranda Suite and Explorer Suite. For most couples the choice comes down to Veranda versus French Balcony, and the size numbers don't run the way you'd expect.
Best value
Veranda Stateroom
A true step-out balcony on the middle or upper deck, and about 70 sq ft more than the French Balcony. This is the default we'd price first.
Smart alternative
French Balcony
A floor-to-ceiling door that opens to a rail, no step-out. It's the smallest category aboard — smaller than Standard — so you're paying for the opening door and the higher deck, not the space. Our rule of thumb: when the Veranda costs more than about 20% extra, this becomes the smarter buy.
The splurge
Explorer Suite
Two separate rooms at the stern and the most space on the ship. A big premium for a week you'll spend mostly ashore — worth it for a long itinerary or a milestone trip.
Skip unless…
Standard Stateroom
Main-deck rooms with a fixed window near the waterline. Roomier than the French Balcony, oddly, but you lose the view and the fresh air. Fine if the saving is large and you'll be ashore all day.

The honest downsides

Uniformity is the whole formula, and it cuts both ways.
Identical ships, a set daily rhythm, a familiar menu structure — almost nothing tells one sailing from the next. A first-timer finds that reassuring. A third-timer can find it corporate, and Ama's food or Avalon's cabins will feel livelier by comparison.

The headline fare isn't the final number.
Gratuities, drinks outside meals, premium tours, spa and laundry all sit outside it. On a week in Europe, gratuities and a spirits package alone can add roughly $300 or more per person — price it out before comparing Viking with lines that bundle more.

Quiet is the point — make sure it's your point.
Evenings lean towards a lecture or a local performance, not a band. There's no pool and no bikes aboard. If you wanted energy after dinner, Viking will read as early nights, not tranquillity.

Arrive a night early, somewhere worth it
Many of these cities put the ship close to the centre, though a few, such as Bucharest and St. Louis, mean a road transfer to the ship. A night or two ahead absorbs a delayed overnight flight and gives you the city before the ship does. Here are hotels to consider in Viking’s main embarkation cities.

The default first river cruise
Viking earned its size honestly. The Longship works, the included tours cover the essentials, and the adults-only calm is exactly what many travellers are paying for.
Go in knowing it's inclusive, not all-inclusive, and uniform by design. If you want a more ambitious kitchen, a bed facing the river, or a ship that welcomes your grandchildren, another line fits better — and we'll say so.
Start with the river, then the cabin. Pick your itinerary first, price the Veranda against the French Balcony for those exact dates, and add gratuities before you compare anything.

Does Viking include gratuities?
No. Gratuities are added on top of the fare and are based on nights aboard. A recent agency guide puts the suggested crew amount at about $20 per person per night in Europe, so budget for it when comparing lines.
Which Viking cabin should I book?
For most couples, the 205 sq ft Veranda with its step-out balcony. If the Veranda costs more than about 20% above the French Balcony, take the French Balcony — just know it's the smallest category at 135 sq ft.
How big is Viking's river fleet?
More than 90 river ships as of October 2026, with Viking expecting 114 by 2028. That's the largest fleet among the river lines we cover, and it's why Viking usually has the most dates to choose from.
