Overview
Built one tier down, on purpose
Emerald exists because Scenic's founder wanted a second price point without a second shipyard.
Glen Moroney launched Emerald Waterways in 2014 as Scenic's lower-priced division; it became Emerald Cruises in 2020 when the river and yacht brands were folded under one name. The ships are called Star-Ships. The European ones carry 180 guests, which is about 10 to 25 more than a Scenic Space-Ship — and that's part of the price difference, not a footnote to it.
What the fare keeps: gratuities aboard and ashore, airport transfers, Wi-Fi, a tour almost every day and wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner. What it leaves out: butlers, and drinks outside mealtimes. Cruise Critic has named it an Editors' Pick for Value several years running.
The one thing nobody else has is the pool. On the European Star-Ships, a heated indoor pool under a retractable roof turns into a cinema on selected nights. It's a party trick, and a good one.

Is Emerald your line?

The ships
Star-Ships, and the one in the glass
Nine of Emerald's river ships are its own design; the tenth, Emerald Astra, is the first of a new generation.
The Emerald Star-Ship
Emerald Astra, launched in May 2026 out of Budapest, carries 180 guests and 51 crew on about 443 feet of hull, with 91 cabins across three decks. It keeps the pool-cinema and the Panorama Balcony Suite with a window that lowers halfway, and adds a grey-tinted glass exterior, Missoni textiles, iPads in every cabin and a sun deck with a putting green, walking track and barbecue. The earlier Star-Ships — Sky, Star, Sun, Dawn, Destiny and Luna — were refreshed before the 2025 season with new Horizon Bar lounges, reworked pool and dining spaces and the same in-cabin iPads.
The pool-cinema
A heated indoor pool under a retractable roof, converted to a cinema on selected nights. It's on every European Star-Ship, but not on Emerald Radiance (Douro) or Emerald Harmony (Mekong), which have outdoor pools instead.
Panorama Balcony Suite windows
Floor-to-ceiling glass that drops electronically to about halfway, so the room becomes an open-air lounge. Not a walk-out balcony — nothing on the ship is.
EmeraldACTIVE
Guided e-bike tours, hikes and canoeing — on the Rhône, under the Pont du Gard — as an alternative to the walking tour. Bike spaces are first come, first served.
Reflections and The Terrace
Reflections is the main restaurant with four-course dinners; The Terrace serves al fresco breakfast and light lunch on the bow, weather allowing, and a Sky Barbecue runs on the sun deck.

The Emerald difference
Emerald or Scenic — the only comparison that matters
The two lines share an owner, a builder and most of their rivers, so the question is never quality. It's which inclusions you'd use.
Scenic puts a butler in every cabin, pours drinks all day and runs its Enrich events. Emerald pours wine and beer at lunch and dinner, skips the butler and sells a premium drinks package for those who want the bar open — about £170 (roughly $225) per person on the UK site; Emerald publishes no US price.
Count your drinks honestly. A couple who'd order two cocktails before dinner every night may find Scenic's fare pays for itself. A couple who'd have a glass with the meal is better off on Emerald and spending the difference on the Owner's Suite.

Cabins
Five categories, one window that matters
Emerald Luna has 91 cabins in five types. The split that counts is between the lowest deck's fixed picture windows and the lowering glass wall everywhere above it.
Best value
Panorama Balcony Suite
Sixty of them per ship, on the two upper decks, with the half-lowering window wall. They're all but identical apart from location, so the cheapest one on deck two is the right buy. This is Emerald's default cabin.
Smart alternative
Grand Balcony Suite
About 30 sq ft more, eight per ship on the top deck, with room service and a Nespresso machine added. Take it when the step up is small; the window is the same.
The splurge
Owner's One-Bedroom Suite
Four per ship, with a separate bedroom and the only bathrooms aboard that aren't tight. Still no butler — Emerald doesn't do them — so you're paying for space, not service.
Skip unless…
Emerald Stateroom
Lowest deck, a picture window that doesn't open. Only 18 sq ft smaller than a Panorama Suite, so the saving is buying you the view, not the floor space. Fine if you'll be in the lounge, poor if you wanted the river from bed. Solo travellers should look at the two 105–117 sq ft single staterooms on this deck instead — no supplement.
Before you book
The honest downsides

Meal-only drinks change the maths more than the brochure suggests.
Wine with dinner is covered. The gin on the sun deck at five, the nightcap after the cinema, the coffee-shop cocktail — all extra, at prices reviewers describe as high. Two drinks a day outside meals across a week adds a real sum for a couple. Count before you choose, then put that total beside Scenic's all-in fare for the same week.

180 guests on a ship this size is the busiest in the family.
Scenic's Space-Ships carry up to 169 on similar hulls; Emerald fits 180. The lounge is long and the pool deck absorbs people, but the restaurant at the dinner rush and the gangway on tour mornings feel it. Bathrooms outside the Owner's Suites are small.

Not every ship has the cinema, and the newest one is only now in service.
Emerald Radiance on the Douro and Emerald Harmony on the Mekong have outdoor pools and no cinema. Emerald Astra sailed for the first time in May 2026, so its reviews are thin, and Emerald Lumi on the Seine doesn't exist until March 2027. Check the ship name on your booking, not just the itinerary.

Many of these cities put the ship close to the centre, though a few, such as Bucharest, mean a road transfer to the ship. A night or two ahead absorbs a delayed overnight flight and gives you the city before the ship does. Here are hotels to consider in Emerald’s main embarkation cities.

The honest middle of the river market
Emerald is what Scenic looks like when you strip out the inclusions most travellers don't fully use. The ships are modern and well kept, the tips and transfers are handled, and the fare is published rather than hidden behind a quote.
It isn't the food leader and it isn't the quietest ship on the water. It is good value in the plain sense — you can see exactly what you're paying for and what you're not.
Price a Panorama Balcony Suite on your dates, add a realistic bar tab, then put the same week on Scenic beside it. Whichever total is lower is the right answer for you, and it changes with how you drink.

Emerald carries 180, pours drinks at meals only, has no butlers and costs less. Quality of ship and crew isn't the difference; the inclusions are.
Which Emerald ships have the pool that becomes a cinema?
All of the European Star-Ships — Sky, Star, Sun, Dawn, Destiny, Luna and the new Emerald Astra. Emerald Radiance on the Douro and Emerald Harmony on the Mekong have outdoor pools and no cinema.
Does Emerald have single cabins?
Yes. European Star-Ships such as Emerald Destiny and Emerald Luna carry two Emerald Single Staterooms each, about 105 to 117 sq ft on the lowest deck, with the single supplement waived. There are only two per ship, so they sell early.
Can children sail with Emerald?
Yes, from age 10, which sets it apart from Viking's 18-plus rule. There's no kids' club. Emerald has run dedicated family Rhine and Danube departures in past summers aimed at ages 10 to 18; check whether a family sailing is on the current schedule before assuming one.
What does an Emerald river cruise cost?
Emerald's US site lists the 8-day Danube Delights from $2,633 per person for a March 2027 departure, as published on October 21, 2026 — that's the Preferred Fare on the lowest deck. Full fare for the same cabin is $3,995. Peak-season and suite pricing runs well above that.
