Where the Nile ships wait
Boarding the Nile in Luxor
Luxor is where you finally meet the ship. You arrive by air, not by water — and a night here on your own, before the line's programme takes over, buys you a sunrise over the West Bank.

In short
Luxor, the short version
The ships usually moor on the East Bank, the side with Karnak, Luxor Temple and the big hotels. Of the lines we cover, only Uniworld publishes its dock.
Most guests come in on the line's own flight from Cairo. The airport is close, so boarding day is short on transfers and long on temples.
Your line covers Karnak, Luxor Temple and the West Bank. A night of your own here is for what it doesn't: a balloon at dawn, or a drink at the Winter Palace.
Viking, AmaWaterways and Uniworld bring you back to Luxor at the end of the sailing — Avalon doesn't, because its cruise finishes in Aswan and flies you to Cairo from there.
The berths
One named dock, and the East Bank
Only one line puts an address in writing. The rest board in Luxor without naming a quay.

All four board in Luxor after the flight from Cairo — Viking, AmaWaterways and Avalon on day 4, Tauck on night 3 aboard the Oberoi Philae or Oberoi Zahra. River ships here usually moor along the East Bank Corniche.

Getting there
From LXR to the ship
Luxor's airport sits just east of town. On a line package you won't touch a taxi; arriving on your own, settle the fare before the car moves.
Fly into
Luxor International Airport LXR
About 7 km east of the centre, 10–20 minutes by taxi or private car to the Corniche.
- Taxi
From the rank
About EGP 150–300 (roughly $5–10) to most central addresses, with EGP 150–200 the usual fare. Agree it before you set off.
Source - Taxi
Careem, not Uber
Careem is more widely used here; Uber has only a limited presence. About EGP 100–200, but cars can be scarce at the airport and you may need an Egyptian SIM.
Source - Taxi
A pre-booked private car
About $15–25 to a Corniche mooring. Shared minibuses don't suit cruise embarkation, so skip them.

The flight from Cairo
Most guests land on the line's own Cairo–Luxor flight, and the ride to the ship comes with it.

Where to stay
The night before boarding
Our Luxor hotel hub has six. The Winter Palace is the one to book, on the Corniche near the moorings; Al Moudira is the quiet choice across the river.
The East Bank Corniche
Luxor Temple, the Winter Palace, the Steigenberger Nile Palace and the Sonesta St. George are all here — and so, usually, are the ships.
Al Awameya, on the East Bank
The area named for Uniworld's dock, and home to the Steigenberger Resort Achti's gardens. Ask how far your hotel is from the dock before you treat it as a Uniworld base.
The West Bank
The Valleys of the Kings and Queens and Hatshepsut's temple. Al Moudira is about 4 km from them; you reach the East Bank by car, ferry or shuttle boat.

When
Ships board here in every month. December to February is the busiest, the temple mornings are comfortable from October to April, and in summer the heat empties the sites by noon. AmaDahlia's remaining 2026 departures run 28 October to 9 December. Whatever the month, be at the gate when it opens at 6am.

Quick answers
Luxor river cruise questions
Where exactly will my ship be?
On the East Bank, most likely along the Corniche. Uniworld uses the Spring Tours dock at Gezirah Al Awameyah. The other lines don't publish a berth, so check your documents before booking a hotel by the river.
Do I fly into Luxor or Cairo?
Cairo first, on almost every package. The line then flies you to Luxor to board.
Is a night in Luxor before the cruise worth it?
Yes, if you'll use it — a sunrise balloon or Luxor Temple at night. Skip it if you'd only repeat what the line already includes.
East Bank or West Bank hotel?
East Bank for the moorings and Luxor Temple on foot. West Bank for quiet and the tombs, with a river crossing on boarding day.
Does every cruise end back in Luxor?
Not Avalon's — it ends in Aswan and flies you to Cairo. Viking, AmaWaterways and Uniworld sail round trip from Luxor.

Every fact above comes from a source listed here, checked on October 22, 2026: port and city authorities, the lines’ own pages, the hotels and the rating guides. Where nothing official is published, the page says so rather than filling the gap.
