The Corniche or the tombs

A night before the ship, in Luxor

One hotel in Luxor has a story the others can't match. The Winter Palace is where the Tutankhamun news broke in 1922 — and it stands a short way from the moorings, which settles most of the argument.

How we chose

How we picked

The bank comes first. Most of these six are on the East Bank, the side the ships usually use. Al Moudira is across the river, for the tombs.

We looked for a Nile view or a real reason to be somewhere else. Four hold a five-star rating, and the Winter Palace is a Historic Hotels Worldwide member.

We don't rank by rate. A short transfer to the ship is worth more here than a bigger room.

Quick picks

The grand one

Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor

HistoricWhere the Tutankhamun news broke

On the banks of the Nile, very close to Luxor Temple

A Historic Hotels Worldwide member since 2014. The site dates to 1886, and the hotel opened as the Winter Palace in 1907. Many rooms look over the Nile to the West Bank necropolis; restaurants include the formal 1886 and a swim-up, L'Oasis.

The grand one, on the Corniche near the moorings. Ask for a Nile-facing room; many look across to the West Bank.

The resort

Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa

SpaA resort, not a town hotel

A resort rather than a town hotel, with its own spa. It isn't on the Corniche, so ask for the drive to your line's mooring before you book.

Central East Bank, with Nile-view rooms

Central and practical, on the Corniche side of town. A good fit for a single night between the flight and the ship.

Sonesta St. George Hotel - Convention Center

On the waterRight on the river road

East Bank, on the Corniche El Nile, with Nile views

On the river road itself, where most ships tie up. Ask for a Nile-view room.

Quiet luxury5-star

Steigenberger Resort Achti

QuietEight acres of gardens

East Bank, Al Awameya, on the Nile

Gardens on the Nile at Al Awameya.

The garden pick, in the same Al Awameya area as Uniworld's dock. On a Uniworld sailing, it's the natural base; ask the hotel how far the Spring Tours dock is.

Al Moudira Hotel

DesignDomes and patios near the tombs

West Bank, not on the river; reached by car, ferry or shuttle boat

Domes, arabesque patios, antique furniture, individually designed rooms and an outdoor pool, about 4 km from the Valleys and Hatshepsut's temple.

The tomb-side night, away from the Corniche. Allow for the crossing to the East Bank on boarding day.

Embarkation day

Boarding day from a Luxor hotel

  1. 01

    Boarding is around midday

Embarkation usually runs midday to early afternoon. That leaves the morning — a balloon, or Karnak at 6am — before check-out.

  2. 02

Confirm the dock a day ahead

Uniworld asks guests to verify the address and boarding time 24 hours before. Do the same on any line, since most don't publish a berth.

  3. 03

From the West Bank, leave early

Al Moudira guests cross by car, ferry or shuttle boat. Plan the crossing with the hotel the night before, luggage included.

We book the night before with the sailing, so the transfer, the all-aboard time and the flight all line up. Tell us the dates and which of these you liked.

  • Usually the same fare as booking direct, and our advice costs you nothing.

Quick answers

Luxor pre-cruise hotel questions

Which hotel is closest to the ships?

The Corniche hotels — the Winter Palace, the Sonesta St. George and the Steigenberger Nile Palace — sit on the stretch where ships usually moor. Your documents confirm the exact berth.

Is the Winter Palace worth it for one night?

For one night, yes. Have a drink in the gardens, walk to Luxor Temple after dark, and board the next day.

Which has the best pool?

The Winter Palace, for L'Oasis and its swim-up. Al Moudira's outdoor pool is the quiet alternative, out on the West Bank.

Should we stay on the West Bank?

Only for quiet and the tombs. Al Moudira is the place for that, but it isn't on the river, and you'll cross to the ship on boarding day.
