The land half of the Nile

Before the flight south, in Cairo

Your Nile cruise starts in Cairo, but your ship doesn't — none of the lines we cover boards a river ship here. Cairo is two or three hotel nights for the Pyramids and the museums, then a flight to Luxor.

In short

Cairo in thirty seconds

You'll spend the first nights of the trip in a hotel, chosen by your line. Tauck names its two; Uniworld names a pair with "or similar"; Viking and AmaWaterways don't name theirs.

Days here are full. Lines fill them with Giza and Saqqara — Viking adds the Grand Egyptian Museum — before the flight to Luxor, which every programme uses.

Most trips bring you back for a last night too, and Tauck gives Cairo three at the end — enough for whatever the first pass missed.

Arrive a day early if you can, because the spare day goes to what the line leaves out: the royal mummies at NMEC, or the pyramids at Dahshur. Nothing else on the programme needs it.

Before the ship

No ship in Cairo: the hotel nights and the flight to Luxor

Here's what each line does with you in Cairo before the flight south.

Viking: three Cairo days, then a flight

Days 1 to 3 cover Saqqara's Step Pyramid, the Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Day 4 is the flight to Luxor; the cruise ends with a flight back and a last Cairo day. Viking doesn't name the hotel.

AmaWaterways: three nights before, one after

Memphis and Saqqara are in the land days, around a seven-night round trip from Luxor. The flights inside Egypt are an add-on, not part of the fare.

AmaWaterways

Uniworld: Four Seasons at Nile Plaza or the Nile Ritz-Carlton

Two nights before the cruise and two after, at one of those two riverfront hotels or one similar.

Uniworld

Tauck: Mena House, then The St. Regis

Nights 1 and 2 at the Marriott Mena House in Giza, nights 3 to 6 aboard, then nights 7 to 9 at The St. Regis Cairo on the Corniche.

Avalon: days 1 to 3, and a last day

Avalon flies you to Luxor on day 4. The sailing ends in Aswan, and you fly from there back to Cairo for the final day.

If you add a night before the package, book it where your line's own stay begins — Mena House for Tauck, the Four Seasons for Uniworld — and you won't change hotels on day one. On Viking, AmaWaterways and Avalon, ask us for the hotel name before booking your own extra night.

Getting there

From CAI to the hotel

You land at Cairo International. With a line air package the transfer is usually arranged; without one, decide before you land.

Fly into

Cairo International Airport CAI

A taxi or ride-hail to central Cairo takes about 25–45 minutes; no road distance is published. Mena House, in Giza, is about 15 km from the centre.

  • Taxi

    Uber or Careem

Both operate at CAI, with a signposted pickup zone at each terminal. Expect about EGP 150–300 to the centre, more at peak.

    Source
  • Taxi

    White-and-yellow metered cabs

About EGP 150–200 on the meter to central Cairo, though some drivers quote 300 or more flat. The black-and-white cabs are unmetered — agree the price first.

    Source
  • Bus

    Public buses and the metro

A free shuttle links the terminals to the bus station, with CTA buses at about EGP 5–15 and 50–75 minutes or more, daytime only. Metro Line 3 needs a bus connection too. Neither suits cruise luggage.

    Source
  • Line transfer

    With the line's air

Viking includes ground transfers when you buy Viking Air. Tauck includes its on-tour air. If you booked your own flights, a pre-booked car is the calm option.

The day before

A spare day in Cairo

Your line will cover Giza. These are for the day it doesn't, and two of them stay open into the evening.

  1. 01

The Grand Egyptian Museum, at your own pace

Opened on 4 November 2025, near the Pyramids. Galleries run 9am–6pm, and until 9pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays — an evening visit beats the heat. Tickets are bought on the museum's official site and can't be refunded. An evening slot suits a line that leaves it out.

  2. 02

    Inside the Great Pyramid

Open daily 7am–5pm. Going inside costs foreign adults EGP 1,000, on top of the plateau entry ticket. Every line includes the plateau; this is for the interior.

    Source
  3. 03

    The royal mummies at NMEC

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization shows them in an interactive display. Open daily 9am–5pm, with evening hours 6–9pm also listed; foreign adults EGP 550. Avalon fits it into its last Cairo day.

  4. 04

The old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir

The oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, downtown. Its published hours conflict, so check on the day. The Four Seasons at Nile Plaza is minutes away.

  5. 05

    Khan el-Khalili after dark

Viking and Avalon both work the bazaar into the last Cairo day. Arrive early and you can see it on your first evening instead.

  6. 06

Dahshur, the one the lines skip

Viking, AmaWaterways and Avalon all build a day around Saqqara and Memphis. None of them includes Dahshur. That's the reason to book a half day yourself.

Things to do in Cairo

One free day goes a long way in Cairo. These three fill it without doubling what your line includes.

  • Private Pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum day8–10 hours, from $35 as published 22 Oct 2026. Only if you arrive before your line's own Giza day.
  • Cairo by night: Khan el-Khalili, a mosque, dinner and a felucca4–5 hours, from $39 as published 22 Oct 2026. Fits a first evening after a daytime landing.
  • Sakkara, Memphis and Dahshur half day5–6 hours, from $15 as published 22 Oct 2026. The way to add Dahshur.

Where to stay

Where to sleep before the flight

Our Cairo hotel hub has six. The Four Seasons at Nile Plaza leads on the river, and Mena House is the one for a window on the Pyramids.

Nile Corniche, downtown

The river hotels line it. The Four Seasons at Nile Plaza is minutes from the Egyptian Museum, and The St. Regis stands at the north end of the Corniche development.

Giza, by the Pyramids

Mena House is about 700 m from the Pyramids, and the Grand Egyptian Museum is close too. Tauck starts here. The trade-off is distance from everything else.

Heliopolis, the airport side

Closer to CAI for a late landing or an early flight south. The Waldorf Astoria Cairo Heliopolis is the Forbes-rated choice.

When

December to February is the high season on the Nile, and October to April the comfortable stretch for sightseeing — November and March are pleasant and less crowded. In the warm months, plan Giza for first thing and the museums for the afternoon.

Quick answers

Cairo river cruise questions

Is the Grand Egyptian Museum the same as the Egyptian Museum?

No. The Grand Egyptian Museum is the new one at Giza, near the Pyramids. The Egyptian Museum is the older one downtown on Tahrir. Lines usually include the first.

Should I stay at Giza or on the Nile?

Giza if you want the Pyramids outside the window and an easy museum day. The Corniche if you want the river and downtown. Heliopolis only for an awkward flight time.

How many nights do I need in Cairo?

Your line already gives you two or three before the cruise. Add one more only if you land late or want a free day for what the programme leaves out.

Can I see the mummies?

Yes, at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. Avalon includes it; on other lines, use a spare afternoon.

Do I fly home from Cairo?

Almost always. Lines fly you back from Luxor, or from Aswan on Avalon, for a last Cairo night before your international flight. Book that flight from CAI, not Luxor.
