River, Pyramids or airport

The hotel nights, in Cairo

In Cairo the hotel isn't the night before the cruise. It's the first act of it — two or three nights, chosen for the Pyramids or the river, before a flight to the ship.

How we chose

How we chose

Position first. Cairo is big and slow to cross, so we picked by what each address puts close: the Nile on the Corniche, the Pyramids at Giza, the airport at Heliopolis.

Four of the six hold a Forbes Four-Star rating. Two of them are where Uniworld and Tauck already put their guests, which helps if you're adding a night.

Price didn't decide the order. Your flight times will matter more.

On the Corniche, along the Nile

Nine places to eat and drink, with Nile and skyline views; minutes from the Egyptian Museum.

The riverfront pick, and one of the two hotels Uniworld names for its Cairo nights. Book your extra night here if you're sailing Uniworld, and you won't move on day one.

By the Pyramids

Marriott Mena House, Cairo

HistoricPyramid views from some rooms

Dating from 1869 and once a royal hunting lodge, in 40 acres of gardens about 700 m from the Pyramids; some rooms look straight at them.

The Pyramids outside the window, and Tauck's hotel for its first two nights. It's about 15 km from the centre — a Giza base, not a downtown one.

A smaller alternative to the big Corniche houses. Ask which rooms face the river when you book.

GrandMichael Graves design, Tauck's finale

On the Nile, at the north end of the Corniche development

A Michael Graves design with 286 rooms and suites, plus 80 apartments; opened in January 2021.

The grand one, and the hotel Tauck uses for its last three nights. Pick it for the end of the trip, on the river and close to downtown.

Away from downtown traffic, on the airport side. Right for a late landing or an early flight to Luxor, wrong for a museum day.

Leaving for the ship

Before the flight to Luxor

  1. 01

    Match your line's hotel

Uniworld names the Four Seasons at Nile Plaza or the Nile Ritz-Carlton; Tauck starts at Mena House. An extra night at the same hotel saves a move on the first morning.

  2. 02

Giza is a drive from downtown

Mena House is a Giza address, not a downtown one. Stay there for the Pyramids, not for an evening on the Corniche.

  3. 03

Ask your line about the flight day

Viking's day 4 is the flight, then boarding in Luxor. Confirm the airport pickup time before you plan breakfast or a last swim.

Quick answers

Cairo pre-cruise hotel questions

Which hotel is closest to the Pyramids?

Marriott Mena House, about 700 m away in Giza. Some rooms look directly at them.

Which is best for the Egyptian Museum downtown?

The Four Seasons at Nile Plaza, which is minutes from it on the Corniche.

We land late. Where should we stay?

The Waldorf Astoria in Heliopolis, on the airport side. Move to the river or Giza the next day if you have time.

If we book only one, which?

The Four Seasons for the river, or Mena House for the Pyramids. If you're on Tauck, The St. Regis is already your last stop.
