Castles by daylight

Amsterdam to Basel, decodedThe Rhine

The Rhine is the river people book for the view. One morning in the gorge carries the whole week, and two side rivers — the Moselle and the Main — change what that week can be.

Overview

Why people choose the Rhine

Most Rhine weeks run between Amsterdam and Basel, seven nights in one direction or the other. The reason to go sits in the middle.

That's the Middle Rhine Gorge, sailed in daylight, with castles on the cliffs above the morning coffee. It lasts a morning, not a week.

One 2026 Rhine-versus-Danube comparison splits it the way we would: the Rhine for daytime scenery and small towns, the Danube for big cities and music. Cologne and Strasbourg are the Rhine's city days — the rest belongs to wine towns and river bends.

Two side rivers widen the choice. The Moselle turns off at Koblenz for steep vineyards and Roman Trier; the Main turns off at Mainz, mostly as the middle of an Amsterdam–Budapest crossing.

Read it in order — every itinerary name is built from the stretches. Routes, season, water policies and published fares follow, and the docks and hotels are on the city pages, not here.

The river

Five stretches, three rivers

  1. 01

The Lower Rhine and the Dutch delta (Amsterdam–Cologne)

The flat northern end of almost every Rhine week. Viking spends Day 1 in Amsterdam, calls at Kinderdijk's UNESCO-listed windmills on Day 2 and reaches Cologne and its Gothic cathedral on Day 3. AmaWaterways stops at Monheim before two closing days in Amsterdam; Uniworld disembarks at Arnhem and finishes with hotel nights in the city. Düsseldorf is a call for Avalon and Tauck and a Christmas-market turnaround for Riverside. Polder and industry, mostly — the scenery is upstream.

  2. 02

The Middle Rhine Gorge (Koblenz–Rüdesheim, the Lorelei)

The reason people book the river. Viking schedules 'Scenic Sailing: Middle Rhine' on Day 4 between Koblenz and Rüdesheim and tells guests to watch for Lorelei Rock. Avalon describes castles on cliffs about 400 feet above the water. A 2026 comparison counts 40-plus castles along the gorge, which the UNESCO listing puts at 64 km. Kaub, inside the gorge, is also the river's best-known low-water bottleneck — CruiseMapper reported its gauge at about 10 cm on 14 August 2026, below the 2018 record.

  3. 03

    The Upper Rhine (Mainz–Strasbourg–Basel)

South of Mainz the river runs across the Rhine plain. Viking calls at Speyer for its UNESCO imperial cathedral, and AmaWaterways, Uniworld and Viking land at Mannheim or Ludwigshafen for a coach to Heidelberg Castle. Every line we track stops at Strasbourg; Avalon and Scenic use Breisach for the Black Forest and Colmar. This is the canalised Rhine. The German waterways office counts ten barrages between Basel and Lauterburg, Iffezheim the last, its two 270 m chambers locking about 30,000 cargo ships a year.

  4. 04

    The Moselle (Koblenz–Cochem–Bernkastel–Trier)

The Moselle leaves the Rhine at Koblenz's Deutsches Eck and winds through steep vineyard country. Cochem's Reichsburg stands about 100 m above the town. Bernkastel-Kues is billed as the Moselle's wine capital, and Trier, founded under Augustus, keeps the Porta Nigra Roman gate. Riverside embarks in Trier and Avalon in Remich, Luxembourg. It's a locked river: the Koblenz chamber of commerce counts ten locks on German territory, seven of them single-chamber — which is why a December 2024 accident at Müden stopped all Moselle and Saar traffic.

  5. 05

The Main (Mainz–Würzburg–Bamberg, and the canal to the Danube)

The Main joins the Rhine at Mainz and is sailed mostly as the middle leg of an Amsterdam–Budapest crossing. Viking pairs Miltenberg with scenic sailing through the Spessart, then Würzburg's Residence and Bamberg on the Regnitz, where its 16-lock, 106-mile canal run to Kelheim begins. Wertheim is Day 11 in the reverse direction. Riverside runs Rhine-and-Main weeks and Christmas sailings from Frankfurt. Wikipedia counts 34 locks and weirs on the roughly 380 km navigable Main — before the canal adds its own.

Itineraries

Six ways the lines sell it

Brochure names vary by line. The building blocks don't — every Rhine product is one of these, or two of them joined end to end.

The classic Rhine: Amsterdam–Basel, 7 nights

The core product, sold in both directions. Viking's 8-day Rhine Getaway calls at Kinderdijk, Cologne, the gorge and Rüdesheim, Speyer, Strasbourg and Breisach. AmaWaterways' Enchanting Rhine runs Basel–Amsterdam with Ludwigshafen for Heidelberg and two days in Amsterdam at the end. Uniworld's 10-day Castles along the Rhine & Amsterdam adds city hotel time after Arnhem. Riverside, Emerald (Jewels of the Rhine), Tauck and Scenic all sell a version, and Celebrity lists more than 60 Basel–Amsterdam sailings for 2028.

Viking AmaWaterways Uniworld Riverside Emerald Tauck Celebrity River Scenic

Rhine & Moselle combinations, 6–14 nights

Turn off at Koblenz for Cochem, Bernkastel and Trier. Avalon sells an 11-day Rhine & Moselle Northbound, Basel–Amsterdam, with a Bernkastel wine tasting, plus a version that boards in Remich. Tauck's 15-day Rhine & Moselle adds Baden-Baden, Heidelberg, Cochem's Schlagkamp Wine Museum, Luxembourg and a private dinner at Schloss Ehreshoven. AmaWaterways (Rhine & Moselle Fairytales), Riverside (6 nights, Basel–Trier) and Emerald (Rhine Castles & Moselle Vineyards) complete the field; Uniworld assigns S.S. Victoria and the 2027 S.S. Audrey to Rhine and Moselle routes.

AmaWaterways Avalon Tauck Riverside Emerald Uniworld

The Main, via Frankfurt and Würzburg

Rarely sold on its own. Riverside starts holiday sailings in Frankfurt — to Basel, Düsseldorf and, via the Main, Amsterdam — and runs a Rhine & Main 'Europe's Fairytale Waterways' route through Miltenberg, Würzburg and Bamberg. Uniworld lists three Frankfurt departure dates in late 2026. Otherwise the Main arrives inside a Rhine–Danube crossing, or on Celebrity's 2027 Nuremberg–Amsterdam New Year's sailing.

Riverside Uniworld Celebrity River Viking

The Grand European: Amsterdam–Budapest, 14–15 nights

Rhine, Main, the Main-Danube Canal and the Danube in one trip. Viking's 15-day Grand European Tour runs Kinderdijk, Miltenberg and the Spessart, Würzburg and Bamberg before 16 canal locks. Tauck (Amsterdam to Budapest by Riverboat), Scenic (Jewels of Europe), Uniworld (European Jewels) and Emerald (Splendours of Europe) sell the same crossing. Riverside adds Budapest–Nuremberg–Amsterdam routes on Riverside Mahler from 2028.

Tulip cruises from Amsterdam, spring

Short Dutch and Belgian loops timed to Keukenhof, open 18 March to 9 May 2027 by Amsterdam's tourism board. Tauck's 9-day Holland & Belgium in Spring includes Keukenhof and a private gala at the Mauritshuis. AmaWaterways runs Tulip Time sailings on AmaSerena, Riverside opens Debussy's season with tulip sailings, and Avalon runs Dutch waterways cruises. Celebrity adds Brussels–Amsterdam tulip dates with Kinderdijk and Maastricht in 2028.

Christmas markets, late November–December

Viking sells Christmas on the Rhine & Moselle; the 2027 Zürich–Paris version calls at Mainz, Koblenz, Cochem, Bernkastel and Trier. AmaWaterways adds December market sailings. Riverside runs short market hops from Basel, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf into early January, and Celebrity has 2027 holiday and New Year's sailings to Amsterdam. Tauck lists November departures on its Rhine & Moselle.

Season

When to sail, and what Kaub taught 2026

The lines sail the Rhine from March to December. AmaWaterways lists March–November departures plus December market sailings, and Riverside's holiday sailings run into early January.

No line publishes a peak. May to September are simply the warmest months; Cruise Critic calls October the quieter choice on the Moselle.

Spring keeps its own clock. The tulip sailings follow Keukenhof, which opens on 18 March and closes on 9 May in 2027.

Late summer is the risk. CruiseMapper reported Kaub running below its 2018 record in mid-August 2026, with commercial shipping effectively halted there.

Riviera Travel cancelled ten departures and Uniworld substituted ships. Viking still described sections of the Rhine as 'abnormally low' on 30 September.

AmaWaterways says the Danube's dams hold that river steadier, and it plans routes around the Rhine's greater exposure. None of the lines says what it does when the river runs high.

For a market cruise, Cologne's cathedral market runs 16 November to 23 December 2026. If August is your only window, buy travel insurance and keep the onward plans loose.

What the lines do when the river drops

  • VikingThe 'ship swap': guests and luggage move to 'their exact same stateroom' on a sister ship beyond the shallow section, with guests and advisors told before departure.Source
  • AmaWaterwaysSister-ship swaps and 'a motorcoach leg to reach a town the ship can't', with an email to guests or advisors at least 14 days before embarkation; it says it 'hasn't canceled a single departure' over summer 2026.Source
  • UniworldIts Rhine pages warn that low water on parts of the Rhine, Main and Danube has forced adjustments on some sailings; the options it lists are alternate embarkation points, a different ship, a hotel stay or motorcoach transfers.Source

Which side for the gorge

No line says one side of the ship sees more castles, and we wouldn't pay extra for either. The lines treat the gorge as a deck event — Viking names it as its own scenic sailing — so the seat that matters is on the sun deck. Direction matters more. The Rhine flows north, so Basel to Amsterdam is downstream, and Roaming Boomers notes that upstream sailing works the engines harder and aft cabins feel it.

What it costs

Published fares, side by side

Lead fares from each line's own page on 21 October 2026, per person and quoted as published. AmaWaterways, Emerald and Scenic are missing because none had a Rhine fare we could confirm that day — Ama's Enchanting Rhine page carried only port charges, $250 for 2026. Price your own dates before treating any figure as a lock.

Quick answers

Rhine river cruise questions

Which months suit a Rhine river cruise?

March to December is the sailing season. May to September is warmest, Cruise Critic rates October as quieter on the Moselle, and the tulip sailings follow Keukenhof's spring window. Late summer is when Kaub runs low — in August 2026 lines swapped ships and one operator cancelled ten departures. For markets, sail between late November and Christmas.

Should a first-timer pick the Rhine or the Danube?

It depends what you want from the window. A 2026 comparison gives the Rhine the daytime scenery — 40-plus castles in 64 km of gorge — and the Danube the cities and music, and Celebrity calls the Upper Danube the most popular first-timer route. AmaWaterways adds that the Danube's dams keep its levels steadier, which matters in August. Castles, wine and Strasbourg: the Rhine. Vienna and Budapest: the Danube.

Does it matter whether I sail north or south?

Less than you'd think, and the lines sell both. Viking's Rhine Getaway runs Amsterdam to Basel; AmaWaterways' Enchanting Rhine and Uniworld's Castles along the Rhine run the other way, and Avalon sells a Northbound version. Downstream is Basel to Amsterdam, the gentler direction for aft cabins. Northbound also ends with the city, which is why Uniworld and AmaWaterways finish with time in Amsterdam.

Will I see the Middle Rhine Gorge in daylight?

On the published itineraries, yes. Viking names 'Scenic Sailing: Middle Rhine' between Koblenz and Rüdesheim on Day 4, and Uniworld sails out of Rüdesheim into the Upper Middle Rhine Valley in the morning. AmaWaterways and Avalon build in a gorge segment but don't print the hour. Ask for the scheduled time on your own departure — low water can move it.

Is the Moselle worth adding?

On a second Rhine trip, almost always. The Moselle is smaller and slower, and it's about wine and villages: Cochem, Bernkastel-Kues, Roman Trier. It's nearly always sold with the Rhine, turning off at Koblenz, and Avalon, Tauck, AmaWaterways, Riverside and Emerald all offer a combination. Expect locks — seven of the ten on the German Moselle have a single chamber, so one closure can stop traffic.

What does Tauck tell Rhine guests to pack?

Rubber-soled flats for the ship and broken-in walking shoes for steep, uneven streets. Layers and a light jacket or sweater for the sun deck, plus sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, a rain poncho and a collapsible umbrella. Evenings are resort casual, with no shorts or sneakers at dinner and one or two jacket-and-tie nights. Tauck allows one suitcase per person up to 50 lb, and passports should be valid six months beyond entry with two blank pages.
