The Grandest Night Before the Ship

Amsterdam’s most decorated rooms are on the canals and the Amstel, a short taxi from PTA, not a walk with bags. De L’Europe holds Three MICHELIN Keys, about 1.8 road miles from the terminal by our routing — and the Waldorf Astoria is Forbes’ only Five-Star in the city. Each card says what the hotel adds and what it leaves you to arrange on sail morning.

What kind of splurge is it?

Eight places made this list. One also makes our thirteen: Hotel Jakarta, the only one you can walk to the ship from. The other seven get their own pages. Pick the kind of night below and the matching hotel lights up.

Two ratings appear here, each read on the guide’s own pages: MICHELIN’s Keys, its hotel award, and Forbes Travel Guide’s stars. For six of the seven, our hotel facts come from MICHELIN’s listing rather than the hotel’s own site, and each page says so. No rating means none on the lists we read, not a worse hotel.

The Trade

Splurge the night, and plan the morning

None of the eight runs a shuttle to the ship, and none prints a distance to a cruise terminal. The numbers are ours, road routes with no traffic to PTA: TwentySeven about 1.4, De L'Europe about 1.8, Tivoli Doelen about 1.8, Pulitzer about 1.9, Pillows Maurits about 2.1, The Dylan about 2.5, Waldorf Astoria about 3.0. Hotel Jakarta is the exception, about 0.5 miles on foot.

Breakfast is printed as included only at Hotel Jakarta. At the other seven, ask when you book, not at the desk.

Parking prices are scarce. MICHELIN lists valet or self-parking with charges at TwentySeven, Tivoli Doelen, Pillows Maurits, the Pulitzer and The Dylan, without a figure — Hotel Jakarta prints €40 per 24 hours. Q-Park Oostenburg’s Park+Cruise is €105 (about US$120) for 7 days and €120 (about US$135) for 8; budget €120 for a seven-night cruise.

A ship billed as “Amsterdam (IJmuiden)” changes all of this — from the canal ring the Felison terminal is a drive of about 40 minutes. Our Amsterdam cruise guide says which lines use which terminal.
