Walking off at the PTA with your bags and no car yet
No rental company we found meets ships at the terminal, so the first leg is on foot or by tram.
The terminal says disembarkation “often happens in phases” and the exact time is hard to estimate — any pickup time you book is a guess.
For pick-ups it says to park in a nearby garage and meet at the street-corner meeting point. That’s for a friend collecting you, not a rental company.
Holland America lists 24-hour lockers at the terminal, €4 small and €6 large, €1 and €2 coins only. Bounce lists bag storage at Piet Heinkade 11 for €3.50 a bag a day, 7 AM to 10:30 PM — about US$4 a bag.
Store the bags, walk to Centraal, collect the car — then come back for the luggage with the boot open.
The Enterprise desk is about 0.8 road miles from the PTA by our routing — on foot, the walk to Centraal and a little beyond.
Book a pickup an hour after your ship’s scheduled arrival, not at it.
Is a counter open on the morning you come ashore?
The town desks only, read in Amsterdam time from each company’s published hours.
The checker starts at 8:30 on a Sunday, an ordinary disembark morning.
Both Centraal desks are open by then, and Enterprise on Nassaukade too — Hertz on Overtoom waits until 9.
At weekends Sixt closes at 4. A long lunch can cost you the pickup.
Schiphol is left out of this checker on purpose; the full checker includes it.
Set your own day and time. Book the desk that’s open with an hour to spare.
Returning the car out of hours, or on the way to your flight
Five Amsterdam desks take a car back when nobody’s behind the counter. Enterprise on Nassaukade doesn’t, and Hertz doesn’t say.

From each brand’s own page, read Oct 3, 2026. Checked Oct 3, 2026
Enterprise sends after-hours returns to Parking Centrum Oosterdok, Oosterdoksstraat 140, level -2, and Sixt to Oosterdok Parking, Oosterdokskade 150, level -2. The two pages print different street numbers for what reads like the same garage, so follow your own contract’s address.
Photograph the fuel gauge and the bay before you walk away — nobody signs the car in at night.
At Schiphol, follow the “Car Rental Return” signs from the A4, per the airport.
Holland America’s disembark-day “Amsterdam Highlights with Airport Transfer” is from $119, about 3.5 hours, ending at Schiphol, for flights after 3 PM — $238 for two, about €212, and only if Holland America brought you.
Ending a road trip at the airport? Return the car at Schiphol rather than in town — you skip the train with bags.
Allow time for the return and the walk to departures, not just the drive.
A three-day car after the ship, ending at the airport
Two of you, collected by Centraal the morning after and returned at Schiphol. Every box takes your own figure.
The rental, line by line
Our three-day arithmetic in euros, not a quote. Base €40 a day, assumed from the average on Discover Cars’ Schiphol page (Oct 3, 2026, shown in dollars). Fuel covers 63 miles on our routing — Zaanse Schans and back, Haarlem and back, then on to Schiphol — once you type the pump price a litre; no official October price was readable. Collecting at Centraal and returning at Schiphol is a one-way; Enterprise shows the fee only once you enter the route, and Sixt prints none, so type it in the drop box. VAT is assumed inside; no seat price, no tolls checked. Dollars at the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 rate, about $1.12.
Three days at an assumed €40 (about US$45) come to €120 before fuel and any drop fee, our arithmetic.
The fuel box covers about 63 miles once you type the pump price — Zaanse Schans, Haarlem and the airport run.
The one-way fee is the number that moves this most — get it on screen or in writing before you pay.
Against it, two people on the train to Schiphol pay about €11, and a coach day to Zaanse Schans and Volendam about €73 for two.
The day-trips page has each drive and each admission. Euro prices are converted at the European Central Bank’s Oct 2, 2026 reference rate (about $1.12); your bank’s will be a little different.
One-way fees and driving on into Belgium or Germany
Most Amsterdam road trips after a cruise end somewhere other than Amsterdam.
Enterprise’s Centraal page: “All hires where the vehicle is not returned to the same location as it was collected from will be subject to a one-way fee.” It varies by car, place and date, and the page says the amount shows during booking.
Sixt allows one-ways between Dutch Sixt stations depending on the car category, and to some other countries; “An additional fee may apply”.
Enterprise’s branch page does print one number: an international one-way drop-off it hasn’t authorised costs €1,200 (about US$1,345) plus VAT on top of the normal one-way fee. Drive into Belgium or Germany, then bring the car back to the Netherlands unless Enterprise confirms the drop in writing. The standard one-way fee shows when you enter the route; for Sixt, ask.
Enterprise’s Centraal page lets you drive into Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, the UK and a handful of microstates (its “Area 1”).
Ghent’s city site says Dutch-registered cars needn’t register for any Belgian low-emission zone, and Brussels’ LEZ site exempts Netherlands plates from its registration too — a Dutch rental is about as easy a car as you can take there.
Registration isn’t the same as a free pass. Brussels’ LEZ site sets Euro 6 for diesel and Euro 3 for petrol from Jan 1, 2026, with a €350 fine, so check your car’s class before driving in.
Our one-way guide covers how drop fees show up in a quote.
Heading north instead? The Copenhagen and Kiel rental pages cover the next turnarounds.
Tell the desk your route when you collect the car, and get the cross-border terms on the contract.
Booking a car for the day you come ashore
Book the Centraal desks for the morning after you dock, or that afternoon if the ship is late.
Set the drop-off to where the trip really ends, so any one-way fee shows in the total. Our Discover Cars review covers deposits and coverage.

After an Amsterdam cruise: rental questions
Can I pick up a rental car at the Amsterdam cruise terminal?
No. We found no brand that delivers to the PTA for leisure renters. The nearest desks are Enterprise and Sixt by Centraal, about a mile by road.
What time do Amsterdam Centraal car rental desks open on Sunday?
Enterprise at Harry Banninkstraat opens at 8 AM and Sixt at De Ruijterkade at 8 AM on Sundays. Sixt closes at 4 PM, Enterprise at 6 PM.
Where do I return a Sixt or Enterprise car after hours in Amsterdam?
Both send night returns to level -2 of the Oosterdok garage by Centraal: Enterprise gives Oosterdoksstraat 140, Sixt Oosterdokskade 150. Follow the address on your own contract.
Can I drop a car from Amsterdam Centraal at Schiphol?
Yes, as a one-way. Enterprise charges a one-way fee on every such hire and shows the amount during booking; Sixt says a fee may apply.
Can I drive an Amsterdam rental car into Belgium?
With Enterprise, yes: Belgium is in its Area 1. Ghent’s city site says Dutch-registered cars needn’t register for Belgium’s low-emission zones.
Where can I leave luggage near the Amsterdam cruise terminal?
Holland America lists 24-hour lockers at the terminal for €4 or €6, and Bounce lists storage at Piet Heinkade 11 for €3.50 a bag a day.
