A one-way is a transfer you drive yourself
Think of a one-way rental as a transfer for the whole car. It beats a shared shuttle once the per-person fares add up past the rental’s all-in price — usually at three or four travelers — and it beats keeping a car parked through the cruise almost every time. What makes or breaks it isn’t the rate. It’s whether the office near the port is open, and running its shuttle, when you get there.
A one-way works when
- An office near the port shuttles cruise passengers to the terminal
- You’ll reach it with time to spare before it closes
- Three or more of you would otherwise pay per-person fares
- You’re coming from a hotel or city the shuttles don’t serve
It doesn’t when
- The nearest office has no port shuttle and taxis are scarce
- You’d arrive after closing, or on a day it’s shut
- It’s one or two of you and a shared shuttle fits your flight
- The drop charge wipes out the saving
Five steps, at any port
Find the office, not just the town
Look for a rental office near the port that says, on its own page, that it shuttles cruise passengers to the terminals. Some are listed as separate “cruise passengers only” locations at the same address as a regular office.
Book the one-way to that office by name
Any one-way charge appears when you book. Budget warns that returning somewhere you didn’t book, without calling first, costs at least $45.
Airport, hotel desk or city office
Airport pickups carry airport charges; a city or hotel desk shouldn’t. Local sales taxes differ from place to place, so the pickup location can change the tax too. Your quote shows both.
Return it in office hours, fuelled as agreed
After-hours drop boxes exist, but Enterprise, National, Avis and Budget keep you responsible for the car until it’s checked in when they reopen, and Enterprise says its port shuttle runs during office hours.
Ride the office’s shuttle to the terminal
With your luggage. Coming home, the same office’s shuttle often meets you at the pier.
What the big companies say about one-way fees
| Company | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise | “Some one-way rentals” carry a one-time drop or mileage charge, disclosed when you book and payable at pickup. | Enterprise |
| Alamo | Much the same: a possible drop or mileage charge, shown at booking, due at pickup. | Alamo |
| National | “Typically no drop charge” between airport locations. | National |
| Avis | “Most locations” don’t charge a drop-off or one-way fee; any fee shows at step three of booking. | Avis |
| Budget | At least $45 if you return to a location you didn’t book without contacting them. | Budget |
| Hertz | One-way charges are set case by case. | Hertz |
Read on each company’s own one-way page, Sept 27, 2026. None publishes a fee table, so the only real number is the one in your quote. Comparison sites like Discover Cars put the one-way fee into the total and break it out before you pay. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Two comparisons that decide it
| Rental all in, one way | vs a $25-a-person shuttle | vs a $30-a-person shuttle | vs a $40-a-person shuttle |
|---|---|---|---|
| $70 | 3 or more | 3 or more | 2 or more |
| $90 | 4 or more | 4 or more | 3 or more |
| $110 | 5 or more | 4 or more | 3 or more |
How many travelers it takes for the one-way to cost less. “All in” means base rate, airport charges, taxes, tolls, fuel and any drop charge — the total, not the day rate. Round numbers for illustration. Illustrative
The second comparison is the one people miss: don’t keep the rental through the cruise. Using our Port Canaveral numbers — a $45 base rate assumed, the reported $9-a-day MCO facility charge and an assumed 10% airport fee, Florida’s surcharge and tax, and tolls and fuel both ways — nine rental days come to about $592 before you’ve paid a cent of port parking, which there runs $20 a day plus tax, arrival and departure days both counted. Two one-ways, there and back, come to about $146 before any drop charge. And some toll programs keep charging while the car sits in the garage: Avis and Budget’s e-Toll Unlimited and PlatePass All-Inclusive bill every rental day.
What port rental offices tend to have in common
| Pattern | What we found at Port Canaveral | Why it matters anywhere |
|---|---|---|
| Cruise-passengers-only locations | Budget, Avis and the Enterprise group each run a “cruise passengers” location; two other Enterprise branches nearby (Cocoa and Titusville) say they don’t serve cruise passengers, and a third (Merritt Island) runs no port shuttle. | Book the cruise location, or you may not get the shuttle. |
| Short weekend hours | Budget and Avis close at 3 PM on Saturdays and Sundays; the Enterprise group’s last shuttle is at 3 PM. | Sail days are often weekends. Check the exact day. |
| Days closed | The Enterprise group is shown closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. | A mid-week sailing can rule an office out. |
| No office at the terminal | Every office is a few miles away, off the port. | The shuttle is the whole plan. Confirm it runs both ways. |
| Not every brand shuttles | Hertz’s office near the port says it has no shuttle and points to taxis. | Budget for a taxi if your office doesn’t. |

The one-way checklist
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| The drop-off office is open on your sail day, at your arrival time | The single thing most likely to go wrong. |
| It says it shuttles cruise passengers, both ways | In its own words, on its own page. A comparison site won’t tell you. |
| The one-way charge is in the total | It’s paid at pickup, even if you prepaid the rest. |
| How the toll program charges | Per day you use a toll road, or every rental day? It matters if the car will sit anywhere. |
| Fuel policy | Enterprise and Hertz sell prepaid fuel only as a full, non-refundable tank. For a short drive, refuel it yourself. |
| Rented child seats | Avis charges $50 if its seat isn’t returned to the location it came from — easy to trip on a one-way. |
| A credit card in the main driver’s name | For the deposit. Many counters won’t take a debit card. |
| After-hours rules | Returning after closing leaves the car on your contract until they reopen. |
Price the one-way, then check the office
A comparison site is the quickest way to see which companies will do your pickup-to-port pair and what the drop charge is. Then open the drop-off office’s own page and check the two things no comparison site shows: its hours on your sail day, and its shuttle. How the site itself works, fees and all: our Discover Cars review.

One-way rentals to a cruise port: FAQ
Can you do a one-way car rental to a cruise port?
Yes, where a rental office near the port accepts one-way returns. At Port Canaveral, Budget’s cruise office says outright that you can pick up at MCO and drop there before you board; Avis and the Enterprise, Alamo and National office also shuttle cruise passengers, so confirm your quote offers the one-way to them. There was no rental return at the terminals themselves.
How much is a one-way rental drop fee?
It depends on the company and the route, and none of the big companies publishes a table. Avis says most of its locations don’t charge one, Enterprise and Alamo say a charge may apply, National says there’s typically none between airports, and Budget charges at least $45 if you return somewhere you didn’t book without calling.
Is a one-way rental cheaper than a cruise shuttle?
For three or more travelers, often. A shuttle charges each person; a rental charges the car. Add up the rental’s total — airport charges, taxes, tolls, fuel and any drop charge — and compare it with the fare times your group size.
Should I keep my rental car during the cruise?
Usually not. You’d pay for every rental day at sea plus port parking, and some toll programs charge for every rental day even while the car is parked. Two one-way rentals, there and back, generally cost far less.
What happens if I return a rental car after hours near a cruise port?
Enterprise, National, Avis and Budget keep you responsible for the car until it’s checked in when the office reopens, and Hertz’s terms say charges keep accruing. Don’t count on a port shuttle while the office is closed. After-hours drop-off is a way to return a car, not a way to reach a ship.
