Getting there · Rental cars
Rental car companies, rated for cruisers
Most rental reviews are written for a business trip. A cruise asks different questions — will anyone drive you to the pier, is the desk open on a Sunday, and can you leave the car somewhere else? We checked ten companies against 23 cruise ports and their own rule books, then scored them on exactly that.

The rankings
Ten companies, ranked for your sailing
Our default weights lean on getting to the ship, because that's the part a business-travel review never measures.
Yours may not — pick your port and the port score switches from the 23-port average to what each company actually does there — a pier shuttle, an office nearby, airport counters only, or a written no. Then drag the weights until they match your trip.
Fine-tune the weights
Weights are relative; they don't need to add to 100.
At our default weights, Avis leads at 7.9, then Enterprise (7.3) and Budget (6.9).

Port by port, brand by brand
Who meets the ship, port by port
This is the grid behind the port score: 230 checks, ten companies across 23 ports, nearly all taken from the company's own location page or the port's or airport's; the few we couldn't read are marked unconfirmed.
Green is rare — only Port Canaveral, Port Everglades and PortMiami have a major brand running its own cruise shuttle, and at Everglades and PortMiami Enterprise, National and Alamo say in writing that they offer no pickup or return service to the port. Everywhere else you're getting yourself to a counter — a short cab ride, or the airport.

How we score
Six things that matter on a cruise trip
Each company gets a 0–10 score on six criteria, and the total is a weighted average. The weights are ours, not gospel, which is why the ranking above lets you change them.
Two criteria are calculated straight from data. The other four are our judgment, not a formula, against each company's published US policies, checked October 21, 2026 — every reason is written out on the company's page.
Cruise-port access
From the 23-port grid. A pier shuttle scores 10, an office near the terminal 6, airport counters only or an unconfirmed claim 3, a written no-shuttle statement 1, and no presence at all 0. We average, scale by 1.5 and cap at 10.
Customer satisfaction
J.D. Power's 2026 rental study (1,000-point scale) and the 2026 ACSI travel study (100-point scale), each converted to 0–10 and averaged where both exist.
One-ways & border rules
Published drop-fee rules, whether a one-way needs arranging in advance, and whether you can take the car into Canada or Mexico — the Seattle, Boston and San Diego questions.
Drivers & family rules
Extra-driver fees, whether a spouse or family member drives free, under-25 rules, and debit-card terms for passengers coming off a ship.
Cruise-day timing
Office hours on the days ships sail, after-hours returns, the grace period before an extra day, and late-return fees.
Tolls & cancellation
Florida and nationwide toll programs — daily fee and the cap per rental — plus what it costs to cancel a prepaid booking.
We rate the US product only. Europe, Asia and Australia rent under different rules country by country, so those ports aren't in the score — their own rental guides cover them.
Discover Cars, our booking partner, compares these companies' prices; it isn't rated and doesn't see the scores before they're published. A higher commission can't move a company up this page, because nothing in the method looks at price or commission at all.
Policies change. Each card on a company page carries its source and the date we read it, so check the one that matters to you before you book.
What renters say
What renters say, and what that misses
Two independent studies cover most of these brands. J.D. Power's 2026 North America study, released October 7 and reported by TravelPulse and Auto Rental News, put Enterprise first at 739 against a 707 average. The ACSI's April 2026 travel study had Alamo and Avis tied at the top on 79.
Neither asks about cruise ports, which is why they carry 20% of the score. Read them for how the counter treats you, and leave the pier questions to the port board.

The ratings tell you which company. The port guides tell you which office, what time it closes on your sail day, and whether a car beats a shuttle at all.
Questions
Rental companies for cruisers: FAQ
Which rental car company is best for a cruise?
By our method, Avis scores highest for cruisers at 7.9 out of 10, mainly because it runs pier shuttles at Port Canaveral, Port Everglades and PortMiami and keeps an office near the terminal at 15 other ports. Enterprise is second at 7.3 with the top J.D. Power 2026 satisfaction score. Pick your port in the rankings above; the order changes with it.
Which rental companies have a shuttle to the cruise port?
At the 23 ports we checked, only three have a major brand running its own cruise shuttle. Avis and Budget do at Port Canaveral, Port Everglades and PortMiami; Payless at Port Everglades and PortMiami; and a shared Enterprise, National and Alamo office at Port Canaveral. Those shuttles keep office hours, so check the last run against your ship's schedule.
Can I drop a rental car at the cruise port?
Usually not at the terminal itself. You return it to a nearby office or the airport and ride the last stretch, and at many ports that office closes early on weekends. Book the return location you'll actually use: Budget, for example, charges at least $45 to drop at a location you didn't book.
Can I take a rental car from Seattle to Vancouver for an Alaska cruise?
Most of these companies allow US rentals into Canada, with conditions. Avis and Budget give you a free Canadian insurance card at the counter. Sixt allows Canada on round trips only (just BC and Alberta from western states) and bans one-ways from the US into Canada, and Payless needs the location's written approval.
Do these ratings change with what Discover Cars pays?
No. Discover Cars is the comparison site we link to for prices, and it isn't one of the rated companies. The score uses port access, published policies and two independent satisfaction studies; price and commission aren't inputs.
How often are the ratings updated?
The company policies were read on October 21, 2026, and the port findings carry their own dates from our port guides. We re-check when a company changes a published policy or a port office opens or closes, and the date on each page moves when we do.
