San Diego Cruise Port Rental Car Guide

The ships dock 2.4 miles from the airport, by the Port’s count, so renting a car just to reach the pier costs far more than a cab. The car’s job is the trips around the sailing, not the ride to the pier — and one popular trip is mostly ruled out, because most of the rental companies we read won’t let the car cross into Mexico. Below: the desks and their Sunday hours, the airport side, and the trips where a car earns its keep.

What we’d tell a friend

A one-day rental for the 2.4 miles from the airport to the pier comes to about $67 at our assumptions, against about $17 at most in a metered taxi and $2.50 a person on Route 992. Keep the car for Legoland, Temecula or a drive up the coast, not for the ship. Downtown you can likely do without one — the $9 ferry reaches Coronado and the trolley runs to the ballpark, Little Italy and Old Town, though we couldn’t confirm the trolley’s hours.

Bring a car when

  • Legoland, the Safari Park or Temecula is on the calendar
  • The trip carries on to Los Angeles or the desert after you get off
  • You’d collect it the morning you disembark, not the day before
  • There are four or more of you and the cost divides four ways

Leave it out when

  • You’re flying in and heading straight for the pier
  • Tijuana is the goal, since five brands say no to Mexico and two allow it only on corporate accounts
  • The plan is downtown and Coronado, which the trolley and the ferry already cover
  • It would sit in a hotel garage at $30 to $57 a night

Still on the fence? Four questions will settle it.

    The rental, line by line
Against the other ways to do it

Read this as a sketch, not a quote. The $50 a day is our own pick for the base rate, so replace it with what your search shows. For scale, Discover Cars priced San Diego Airport pickups “from $32” a day and downtown pickups from $31 in its Sept 25 to 27, 2026 search, and it calls all of it approximate. Airport rows carry the customer facility charge, up to $9 for each rental day and capped at five days, and an 11% concession fee we assumed because nobody publishes one for San Diego. The only tax applied is California’s 3.5% tourism assessment. The sources split on whether sales tax also lands on a rental, and some quotes print a line for it, so add yours in the fee box if you see one. For fuel we assumed 30 mpg and AAA’s San Diego average of $6.39 a gallon from Sept 28, 2026, spread over the 2.4 miles from the airport. There’s no toll on any of these routes. The size of the gap is the point: a rental only earns its keep when the day holds more than the ride.

At our assumed $50 a day, a one-day car for that short hop lands near $67, and Route 992 for two comes to $5. A taxi meter tops out near $17 — for the whole car, not each seat.

Set the group to five and Route 992 still costs far less than the car.

The itinerary flips it, not the distance, so picture Legoland or a run out to Temecula before you decide.

    The border rule

Can the rental go to Tijuana? Mostly not

Plenty of San Diego cruisers ask about Tijuana, and the rental companies mostly answer no.

Read on each company’s own policy page, Sept 28, 2026. Re-read before you quote

Of the nine brands we read, five say no, and Avis and Budget carve out only corporate accounts held by US residents — a door open to a business account, not to a leisure renter.

The trolley is the way instead — the MTS Blue Line runs from downtown to the San Ysidro Transit Center at the border for $2.50 one way, every 15 minutes, and it takes about 28 to 30 minutes from the Santa Fe Depot by our reading of the timetable. That makes the trolley, not the rental, the way to do Tijuana.

Cross Border Xpress won’t help with a day trip — that bridge serves only ticketed passengers at Tijuana’s airport.

The State Department’s advisory for Baja California, Tijuana included, reads “Reconsider travel” — though it puts the concern in non-tourist areas.

We found no official page on border hours, wait times or return papers, so check CBP and the State Department first; passports are the norm. The Tijuana day, in full.

About 2.4 miles from the B Street terminal by the Port’s count. Enterprise takes after-hours returns here.

Then an Uber or cab: about $17 at most on a metered taxi, by our arithmetic.

Neither terminal has a rental counter that we could find — and the Port says passengers may not park on the pier during a cruise, so the car has to come from a desk somewhere in town.

Enterprise Little Italy comes closest to an exception — its page speaks to ship passengers directly and says to call the branch when you’re off the ship, but says nothing about what happens next, so ask before you rely on it.

Enterprise’s Grand Hyatt branch (1 Market Place) shows a 1:15 to 5 PM window every day and no after-hours returns, which we’d confirm by phone.

National and Alamo list only the airport for San Diego, and we couldn’t read Dollar’s or Thrifty’s downtown pages.

    The Sunday problem

Check the drop-off hours before you check the price

Enter your sailing day and the time you expect to reach the desk, and we check it against every hour we could find published.

Set it to Sunday at 11, then to 3 that afternoon, and watch the open desks disappear.

Avis and Budget in Little Italy close at noon on Sundays and the 6th Avenue branch at 1 — Enterprise and Hertz don’t open at all.

After hours the picture is thin — Enterprise Little Italy takes no returns, the Avis and Budget drop boxes read as template text, and Sixt’s garage is the only documented after-hours return, though Sixt’s own pages disagree on the level. We wouldn’t bet a sailing on any of them.

San Diego International Airport, the Port of San Diego and each company’s page, Sept 28, 2026. Checked Sept 28, 2026

After landing, the last leg is the cheap part. MTS caps what a metered cab can charge, and on the Port’s 2.4 miles that works out to about $17 before tip at most — our arithmetic, and app-booked cabs sit outside the cap.

Route 992 costs $2.50 and reaches the Santa Fe Depot in about 15 minutes, with service every 15 minutes from about 4:30 AM until 1 AM.

Landing at LAX instead? That’s about 125 miles and two and a half hours to the terminal with no traffic — by our estimate, and traffic will add to it.

      Airport premium

Airport charges against a downtown desk

Rental lengthFrom the airport centerFrom a downtown desk
      1 day$67$52
      3 days$200$155
      5 days$334$259
      7 days$449$362

Built on our assumed $50 base rate, the airport’s $9-a-day charge (five days at most), an assumed 11% fee and California’s 3.5% assessment. Fuel is extra. Illustrative

Over a single day, airport charges and tax put about $15 on top of a downtown desk. Past five days the flat charge stops, so the gap grows more slowly — it doesn’t close.

What you give up downtown is hours — several desks close on Sundays. We couldn’t see fleet sizes from here, so quote each desk before you commit.

      Toll check

You won’t pay a toll getting to the ship

Nothing on the drives out of the port carries a toll — and the Coronado Bridge has been free since 2002. San Diego does have two toll roads, SR 125 in the South Bay, which charges everyone, and the I-15 Express Lanes, which are free only to carpools, and you can skip both.

The rental companies’ toll programs leave gaps. Enterprise’s and National’s says the Southern California express lanes on 10, 110, 91, 15, 580 and 680 aren’t covered, and never says whether “15” means San Diego’s. Hertz’s PlatePass names I-10, I-110 and SR 91 and says nothing about I-15 or SR 125.

Avis’s e-Toll Unlimited option is a flat $10.99 to $25.99 a day by pick-up location — the standard plan charges $6.95 only on days you hit a toll, so read the enrollment terms before you accept either.

      FAQ

San Diego cruise port rental car FAQ

Can you rent a car at the San Diego cruise terminals?

We found no counter at B Street or Broadway Pier. The nearest desks are Avis and Budget in Little Italy, about 0.8 miles from the B Street terminal by our estimate, plus Enterprise, Hertz and Sixt downtown. Enterprise Little Italy asks ship passengers to phone the branch on arrival, so confirm what it offers.

Which downtown San Diego rental desks open on Sundays?

Three do. Avis and Budget in Little Italy open 8 to noon, their 6th Avenue branch 9 to 1, and Sixt at the InterContinental is open daily 8 to 5. Enterprise and Hertz downtown stay closed on Sundays, per their own pages.

How far is San Diego’s airport from the ships?

It’s 2.4 miles to B Street and 2.7 to Broadway Pier by the Port’s count, and under 10 minutes by car. A metered cab tops out near $17 on our arithmetic from the MTS schedule, and Route 992 to the Santa Fe Depot costs $2.50.

Can a San Diego rental car go to Tijuana?

Mostly no. Enterprise, National, Alamo, Sixt and Hertz say cars rented in the US can’t go into Mexico, and Avis and Budget make an exception for US residents on corporate accounts, with Mexican insurance from the counter. The MTS Blue Line reaches the border for $2.50 one way.

What tax will a San Diego rental car carry?

The 3.5% California tourism assessment applies. At the airport there is also a customer facility charge, up to $9 a day for five days, plus a concession fee. Sales tax is the open question: our sources disagree and some quotes carry a line for it, so read yours.

Are there tolls around San Diego’s cruise port?

None on the routes from the port. Both SR 125 in the South Bay (everyone pays) and the I-15 Express Lanes (carpools ride free) are optional. The Coronado Bridge has been free since 2002.
