Getting There · San Diego

Nearest Airport to the San Diego Cruise Port

Few cruise ports have it this easy. The port puts San Diego International about two miles north of the terminals, under 10 minutes’ drive. It’s a short cab, a rideshare or a 15-minute bus to Santa Fe Depot. Tijuana, across the border by bridge, and LAX are the long way round.

The short answer

Fly into San Diego International. The port puts it about two miles from the cruise terminals, under 10 minutes’ drive, and the 992 bus runs to Santa Fe Depot, two blocks from the terminals, every 15 minutes.

Tijuana’s airport, through the Cross Border Xpress bridge, can save on some fares, and it’s 22 miles from downtown by CBX’s count. LAX is the last resort: two of our hotels put it 120 miles or more away.

Fly into SAN if

  • Your airline flies there, which most do
  • You want a 10-minute ride to the ship
  • You’re landing on sail day

Consider Tijuana if

  • You’re flying from inside Mexico, or the fare saving is big
  • You have your passport and time for the border
  • You’re landing the day before

Two miles down Harbor Drive

The airport is on the north shore of San Diego Bay. Harbor Drive runs along the water to the B Street Pier & Cruise Ship Terminal at 1140 North Harbor Drive, the address Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Norwegian and Disney give; the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier is at No. 1000. The port says don’t arrive before 10 a.m., and have your ride drop you past the gate, on the pier.

The Ride

What the ride to the ship costs

Pick your airport and set how many of you are riding. The bus and shuttles charge per person and the cars by the vehicle, so the cheapest answer changes with the size of your party.

Travelers

Viator, private one-way ride to the cruise port, up to three—
MTS 992 bus to Santa Fe Depot, two blocks from the terminals—
CBX’s shuttle to San Diego, per its guide (not to the port)—

One way, before tip, as each company published it on September 26, 2026. Holland America’s $25 is its “starting at” estimate for a taxi or rideshare, not a fixed fare; MTS sets the meter at $3.80 for the first tenth of a mile and $4.10 a mile after, plus $3.56 from the airport. The 992 is $3 from October 1, 2026 ($2.50 before). Viator’s private arrival transfer from SAN starts at about $48 but doesn’t say for how many, so it isn’t priced here. No cruise line publishes a San Diego transfer price.

Heading home after the cruise? Rideshare pick-up is on Harbor Drive outside the terminal gate, per Holland America, and the 992 runs back from Santa Fe Depot.

Sail-Day Landing

Landing on sail day? Check your timing

No line publishes a San Diego landing cut-off, so the yardstick here is our rule of thumb, labelled as ours. Enter your landing time and the departure time from your cruise documents.

  • Taxi, rideshare or the 992 bus, any lineNo cut-off of its own. The port puts the airport about 2 miles and under 10 minutes from the terminals; Holland America says 20 minutes with traffic. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 3 hours before the ship leaves.—
  • Your cruise line’s transferRoyal Caribbean, Norwegian and Disney sell transfers without a published San Diego landing cut-off. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 3 hours before the ship leaves, and check your booking.—
  • Cross Border Xpress, then a ride northCBX puts itself 22 miles and about 20 minutes from downtown, and its pages give 2 or 4 hours after landing to cross. Border lines vary. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 5 hours before the ship leaves, or better, the day before.—

Whatever the ride, your cruise line’s check-in time is the real deadline, and it’s printed in your boarding documents. The port asks you to arrive at your assigned time, and not before 10 a.m.

Ships clear early, flights leave late, and SAN is only 2 miles off. Put in your flight and this works out the ride, the wait, and what to do with the bags.

Partner links (transfers, rental cars, luggage storage, lounges) may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.

Bus and Bags

Can you get to the port without a car?

Yes. MTS Route 992 runs from both airport terminals to Kettner Boulevard and West Broadway, across from Santa Fe Depot, in about 15 minutes, every 15 minutes from 4:30 AM to 1 AM. The port puts the Depot two blocks east of the terminals; Holland America calls it about a mile, 4 long blocks on an accessible sidewalk.

The free San Diego Flyer runs from both terminals to the Old Town Transit Center every 20 to 30 minutes, for the trolley or the Old Town hotels. The trolley stops nearest the port are Santa Fe Depot and County Center/Little Italy. Fares are $2.50 until October 1, 2026, then $3; tap a contactless card or use PRONTO.

Bags: there’s no luggage storage at the pier, per Holland America, and Bounce says Santa Fe Depot has no public lockers. Bounce lists 99 spots in San Diego from about $2.25 a day. Several hotels hold bags for guests: the Manchester Grand Hyatt, Kona Kai and Humphreys Half Moon Inn say so.

Fly In Early

Flying in the day before

With the airport this close, flying in the day before is less about traffic and more about slack: a delayed flight doesn’t cost you the ship.

Five of our top twenty run a free airport shuttle, all by the airport, and two of them also run to the terminal: the Hacienda and the Holiday Inn Express in Old Town. Downtown, the airport is a short cab, and five hotels are a walk from the ship.

FAQ

San Diego cruise airport FAQ

What is the closest airport to the San Diego cruise port?

San Diego International (SAN). The port puts it about two miles north of the cruise terminals, less than 10 minutes' drive. Royal Caribbean says 3 miles, and Holland America about 2.5 miles and 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Few cruise ports have an airport this close.

How much is a taxi from the San Diego airport to the cruise terminal?

No flat fare is published. Taxis run on MTS's maximum meter: $3.80 for the first tenth of a mile, $4.10 a mile after, plus a $3.56 surcharge on trips from the airport, and cabs with a card reader can add 6%. Holland America puts a taxi or rideshare to the pier at "Starting at USD $25". Rideshare picks up at the Terminal 1 crosswalk and in the second lane of the Terminal 2 Transportation Plaza.

Is there a bus from the airport to the cruise port?

Yes, nearly. MTS Route 992 runs from both terminals to Kettner Boulevard and West Broadway, across from Santa Fe Depot, in about 15 minutes, every 15 minutes from 4:30 AM to 1 AM. The port puts Santa Fe Depot two blocks east of the terminals; Holland America calls it about a mile on foot. The fare is $2.50, rising to $3 on October 1, 2026; tap a contactless card or use PRONTO.

Can I fly into Tijuana for a San Diego cruise?

You can, through Cross Border Xpress, the bridge from Tijuana's airport to a terminal on the US side. CBX says it's 22 miles, about 20 minutes, from downtown San Diego, and to cross you need a boarding pass for your Tijuana flight; CBX's pages give both 2 and 4 hours after landing as the window. Bring your passport, and a visa or I-94 if you need one. CBX doesn't publish a fixed ticket price, and its guide lists a shuttle to San Diego at $14.

Should I fly into LAX for a San Diego cruise?

Only if the fare saving is big. No port, cruise line or airport page we read gives a distance or a transfer from LAX to the San Diego terminal. Two of our downtown hotels put LAX 120 and 124 miles away. Fly into SAN if you can, or come down the day before.

Do the cruise lines run transfers from the San Diego airport?

Royal Caribbean says all its ports have airport transfers for a fee, and suggests buying them two weeks ahead. Norwegian sells them until 4 days before sailing (800-327-7030), and Disney's are an extra fee. None publishes a San Diego price, and Holland America's San Diego page lists a taxi or rideshare rather than a transfer.

Is there a lounge at San Diego airport?

In Terminal 2. LoungePair sells a pass to the Aspire Lounge, $50 for 3 hours, and Priority Pass lists Aspire, the PGA Tour Grill and a Be Relax spa, all in Terminal 2. The airport's list adds a Chase Sapphire Lounge, a Delta Sky Club and a United Club. None of the three sources lists a lounge in Terminal 1.

Can I fly home the same morning I get off the ship?

The port publishes no debarkation times. The airport is about 2 miles from the pier, and rideshare pick-up is on Harbor Drive outside the terminal gate, per Holland America. The Coming Home tool on this page works out the gap for your flight.
