The Night Before a San Diego Cruise: Do You Need a Car Downtown or on Coronado?

The Midway and Seaport Village sit on the waterfront near the terminals, so the night before can happen without a car. Downtown hotels charge $30 to $57 a night to park, the Coronado ferry is $9, and the trolley and buses reach the ballpark, Little Italy, Old Town and the zoo. The garage adds that on top of the rental — and the reasons to pay it are few.

Most of the night before stays on the waterfront

Two of these three sit on the waterfront, and the third is in Little Italy.

Each attraction’s own page. Checked Sept 28, 2026

The Midway closes at 5 and Seaport Village runs until 9. An evening arrival gets you the second, and only the outside of the first.

Little Italy’s Mercato runs Saturdays 8 to 2 and Wednesdays 9:30 to 1:30 — over by early afternoon either way. It helps only if your night before lands on one of those days.

The Port puts Santa Fe Depot two blocks east of the terminals.

In a straight line we measure closer to half a mile, so don’t count on two blocks.

The Gaslamp Quarter’s own association says everything in the district is within a five-minute walk of everything else.

That’s a marketing claim, and only for the district.

Trolley and ferry

Coronado by ferry, everywhere else by trolley

MTS charges $2.50 a ride on its buses and trolleys. With a PRONTO card or a tap the fare stops at $6 a day, and the reduced fare is $1.25.

The trolley reaches Petco Park, Little Italy and Old Town, and the Green Line stops at County Center/Little Italy. We couldn’t confirm the trolley’s hours or how often it runs, or the walk from the terminals to a station. Read the timetable before you count on it.

Rapid 215 and Route 7 both cover downtown to Balboa Park and the zoo, in about 15 minutes. MTS routes 8 and 9 run to SeaWorld from the Old Town Transit Center.

The Coronado ferry costs $9 one way or $18 round trip, and boats leave Broadway Pier about every hour.

Children 3 and under ride free — so do bikes.

Per the Ferry Landing’s page, the leisure schedule starts around 9 AM. The last boat leaves around 9 PM Sunday to Thursday and 10 PM Friday and Saturday.

The operator lists earlier commuter departures, so confirm current times. On the island, MTS Route 904 links the Ferry Landing with Coronado City Hall.

Should you drive over anyway, the bridge stopped charging a toll in 2002.

The ferry is a way to leave the car behind, not a way around a toll.

Parking your own car for the week is a separate question — see San Diego cruise parking — and if you’re still choosing a hotel, start with the top 20.

Garage rates

What will the hotel garage cost?

Downtown and bayfront hotels run from $30 to $57 for the night, and the cheapest, the Best Western at $30, is a covered lot.

Each rate is taken from the hotel’s own page. Several downtown hotels are valet only, and a few list no rate we could read. Checked Sept 28, 2026

The spread runs from the Best Western Plus Bayside Inn’s $30 covered lot to the InterContinental’s $57.

The Marriott Marquis charges by the hour — $11 for the first, $7 for each after, capped at $50 a day.

The Wyndham sells parking packages alongside cruise stays, and the Best Western has a park-and-cruise package of its own.

Both look aimed at guests who leave a car for the week, not at a renter who hands one back.

A rental goes back before you board — the package is for someone else.

Verdict

Save the car for Legoland and Temecula

Where that leaves you

Two nights with a rental from the airport to a downtown hotel come to about $227 at our assumptions, and $90 of that is the hotel’s garage. Not much you’d do the night before calls for a car. The Midway and Seaport Village are on the waterfront, Little Italy and the ballpark are a trolley or bus ride away, and Coronado is a ferry.

Rent if

  • Legoland or Temecula is on the same trip
  • Your hotel parks for $30 to $40
  • You’re driving on after the cruise
  • The desk is on your way to the terminal

Walk instead if

  • Your hotel is bayfront, at $45 to $57 a night
  • The waterfront, Little Italy and the ballpark are the plan
  • The car would make one trip, from the airport
  • It’s a Sunday, and Enterprise and Hertz are closed
Meters

Seven days a week on the Embarcadero, six downtown

North Embarcadero meters, the ones nearest the terminals, were $2.50 an hour in the Port’s March 2025 announcement. They’re enforced seven days a week from 10 AM to 8 PM — check the meter for today’s rate.

The city’s downtown meters differ: enforced Monday to Saturday, to 8 PM in the hospitality zone — and not on Sundays.

The city says a car can’t sit more than 72 hours unless it moves at least a tenth of a mile.

It has to stay 15 feet from a hydrant and be gone for the whole posted street-sweeping period.

We couldn’t find San Diego’s parking-fine or tow-fee amounts — so we won’t print one. Tow recovery is through AutoReturn or 619-527-4392.

    The rental, line by line
Against the other ways to do it

Treat the total as a rough figure, not a quote. Our $50 base rate is a guess, so replace it with the number on your own search. For reference, the “from” prices on Discover Cars for Sept 25 to 27, 2026 were $32 a day at the airport and $31 downtown, and it calls them approximate. The airport rows include a customer facility charge, up to $9 a rental day and five days at most. They also carry an assumed 11% concession fee, since San Diego’s isn’t published. The only tax is California’s 3.5% tourism assessment. If your quote carries a sales-tax line, put it in the fee box, because the sources disagree about it. The fuel line uses 30 mpg and $6.39 a gallon, the San Diego average AAA reported on Sept 28, 2026; there are no tolls on these routes. Miles are set at about 15, the airport to a hotel and back with a trip or two between, our estimate. Parking starts at $45 a night, the SpringHill Suites’ self-park rate on its own page.

A night with a car comes to about $115 at our assumptions, and two nights to about $227. The garage takes $45 of the first and $90 of the second.

MTS at its daily cap is $12 a person for two days — a per-head fare, not a per-car one, so the comparison tilts as the group grows.

Try the Best Western’s $30 in the parking box and watch the gap narrow.

    Return desk

The return desk’s hours are the thing to check

Pick up at the airport or at a downtown desk, whichever puts the car nearer your hotel, and choose a hotel that lists its garage rate.

Enterprise and Hertz are closed Sundays — a Sunday return means a different desk or the airport. Look at the hours before you lock in a date.

    FAQ

Downtown San Diego, asked and answered

How much are the meters near the cruise terminals?

The Port’s March 2025 announcement put North Embarcadero meters at $2.50 an hour, enforced seven days a week from 10 AM to 8 PM, so check the meter for today’s rate. The city’s downtown meters are enforced Monday to Saturday and not on Sundays.

Is the Coronado ferry worth it?

Yes, if you’d otherwise drive over. It’s $9 one way or $18 round trip, with departures from Broadway Pier about hourly to the Ferry Landing, and MTS Route 904 runs on to City Hall. The bridge is toll-free, so what the ferry saves you is the parking, not a toll.

How much does parking cost at San Diego hotels?

From their own pages: $40 at the Hampton Inn and the Residence Inn downtown, $45 at the SpringHill Suites and the Residence Inn bayfront, $50 at the Wyndham Bayside and, at most, the Marriott Marquis, $57 at the InterContinental and $30 at the Best Western Bayside Inn. Several downtown hotels are valet only.

Do I need a car in downtown San Diego before my cruise?

For most people, no. The trolley reaches Petco Park, Little Italy and Old Town, Rapid 215 gets you to the zoo and Balboa Park, and a ferry crosses to Coronado for $9. A hotel garage adds $30 to $57 a night on top of the rental.
