Discover Cars Review

A comparison site that books your car with a real rental company. Good at showing many companies’ prices side by side; only as good as the rental conditions you actually read — because some of what you pay still happens at the counter.

The short answer

A useful comparison tool, with the counter still in the picture

The short answer

Discover Cars is worth using to see which rental companies serve your pickup and drop-off, and what each costs, before you commit. It isn’t a rental company, and it doesn’t make the counter go away: the deposit, some taxes in the US, and extras like toll devices and child seats are still between you and the company that hands you the keys. Read each offer’s “Rental Conditions” and it does the comparing well. Skip that, and you’re comparing headline prices.

It’s a good fit if

  • You want many companies’ prices for a pickup and drop-off side by side
  • You’re pricing a one-way, where the drop charge varies by company
  • You want free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup
  • You have a credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit

Book direct instead if

  • You want loyalty points or elite status credit on the rental
  • You need a specific office because of its hours or shuttle
  • You’re using a corporate, membership or government rate
  • You only have a debit card
What it is

A broker, not a rental company

Discover Cars describes itself as a car rental comparison and booking website: it doesn’t own cars or run rental desks. Under its terms, the company you contract with is Travel Drive GmbH, registered in Zug, Switzerland, which sells you a “Travel Package” and arranges for a rental company to provide the car. (Its operational base is often reported as Riga, Latvia; Discover Cars’ own About page doesn’t say.)

It says it started in 2013 as a three-person team, and now claims 164 countries, 50,000+ locations and 1,000+ rental suppliers. Those are its figures, not audited ones. Search your own airport to see which companies it carries there.

How booking works

Search, compare the conditions, get a voucher

Search

Destination, dates, driver details

Enter the pickup and drop-off, the dates and the driver’s age. If the driver is young, entering the real age puts any young-driver fee into the total you see.

Compare

Price and the fine print, together

Discover Cars itself tells you to compare the supplier rating, deposit, accepted cards, mileage, fuel policy, protection, cancellation terms, driver requirements and pickup arrangement alongside the price.

Book

A voucher, with what’s due at the desk

You get a voucher with the supplier’s contact details, pickup instructions and the amount you’ll still pay at the counter.

One option to understand before you click it: “DiscoverCars’ Choice” offers hide the rental company’s name until after checkout, and you can’t switch supplier afterward. That matters if you need a particular office — say, the one near a cruise port that runs a shuttle.
What you pay, and where

Online versus at the counter

Payment optionPaid onlinePaid at pickup
Pay the full rental onlineThe rental priceOptional extras, plus the security deposit
Pay part nowDiscover Cars’ commission (plus any coverage you add)The rest of the rental, plus extras and the deposit
Pay everything at pickupNothing, unless you buy coverage onlineThe whole rental, extras and the deposit

From Discover Cars’ help centre and “how we work” page, read Sept 27, 2026. Online, it takes credit and debit cards, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay and Revolut Pay, and the card needn’t be in the driver’s name. Online payments are in EUR, USD, CAD, GBP, AUD, NZD or BRL; counter amounts are in local currency. Checked Sept 27, 2026

The counter is stricter than the website. Discover Cars says suppliers usually need a physical credit card in the exact name of the main driver at pickup. Digital wallets, prepaid cards and cash are often rejected, and so are many debit cards. That’s the rental company’s rule, not Discover Cars’, and it can cost you the car at the desk.
The deposit

Held by the rental company, not by Discover Cars

The rental company holds a security deposit on the main driver’s credit card to cover possible damage excess. Discover Cars gives no fixed amount: it depends on the car category and the supplier, and it’s shown in each offer’s Rental Conditions.

Buying Discover Cars’ Full Coverage doesn’t reduce that deposit. Its own help article is plain about why: the supplier can’t see it. Budget for the full hold.

Cancellation and changes

Free up to 48 hours, then it isn’t

SituationWhat Discover Cars’ terms say
Cancel 48+ hours before pickupFull refund. By default it comes as Booking Credit, valid three years; a link in the cancellation email lets you ask for a refund to your original payment method instead, typically 5–10 business days.
Cancel within 48 hoursThe rental prepayment isn’t refunded.
No-showCancelled with no refund.
Late pickup or early returnNo refund for unused hours or days.
Changing the bookingNo service fee, but the price may change.
Cancelling Full CoverageFull refund until 23:59 the day before pickup; after that, Booking Credit only, until pickup time. The help pages and the terms don’t word this identically.

Read Sept 27, 2026. Checked Sept 27, 2026

Ask for the cash. Booking Credit is the default refund. If you don’t expect to rent through Discover Cars again within three years, use the link in the cancellation email to take the refund to your card.
Full Coverage

What it is, and what it isn’t

Discover Cars Full Coverage
What it isAn optional reimbursement product sold by Discover Cars, separate from the rental company. You pay the supplier for damage first, then claim it back.
What its terms call itNot an insurance product. No underwriter is named anywhere we read.
CoversThe excess for damage and theft, plus tyres, wheels, windows, mirrors, lights, bodywork, roof, undercarriage, towing and roadside assistance, replacement keys and locksmith, taxi, misfuelling, damage-related admin fees and loss-of-use charges.
Doesn’t coverThird-party liability, interior damage and special cleaning unless caused by a collision, traffic-fine admin fees, theft of individual parts, towing for wrong parking.
LimitUp to €5,000 in total, per its help article; the terms say the maximum is shown on each voucher.
PricePer day, shown next to “Add Coverage” in search; it varies by car category, destination and trip length.
ClaimsFiled in “My Booking” within 90 days of drop-off, per the terms (an older help article says 28). Most reviews take about 5 business days.

From Discover Cars’ Full Coverage help articles and terms, read Sept 27, 2026. Checked Sept 27, 2026

The honest read: it tops up the rental company’s own collision and theft cover by reimbursing the excess, rather than replacing it. Discover Cars says a counter agent may call its coverage “invalid”, and explains that means only that it can’t replace their deposit; you can decline the counter’s extra cover if you have a credit card for the deposit. In the US, check first that your rate actually includes collision and theft cover (LDW/CDW); if it doesn’t, Full Coverage only reimburses up to its limit. Expect the conversation at the desk, and decide before you get there.

Renting in the US

What’s different about a US rental

ItemWhat Discover Cars says
Collision and theft (LDW/CDW)In the US and Canada it’s often optional rather than included. If it isn’t included, you prove your own cover or buy it at the desk.
LiabilityUsually included in Europe, often an optional add-on in the Americas. Check “Rate Includes”.
Taxes and surchargesIn the US, some may not be in the quoted rate. Check “Rental Conditions – Rate Excludes”.
TollsBudget for the toll package separately; it isn’t built into the price. (Our note: in Florida the rental companies’ own programs start at $4.95 a toll day and run up to $25.99 a day for Avis and Budget’s unlimited plan at some locations.)
One-way feesIncluded in the total you see, broken out on the booking page, and paid to the rental company at pickup.
Extra driverPaid as a daily fee at the desk, if it isn’t included free.
Young driverIncluded in the total if you search with the driver’s real age.

A worked example. On Sept 27, 2026, Discover Cars’ Orlando airport page advertised prices “from $7/day” and an “average car rental price $19 per day.” Those headline figures may not include all of Florida’s $2-a-day surcharge, the 6.5% tax and the airport charges — check “Rate Excludes” on each offer — and the toll program is extra either way. Our Port Canaveral calculator shows how those stack up on a real trip.
Ratings and reputation

Two kinds of stars, and what they mean

Supplier ratings. Each rental company has a supplier rating, built from feedback by people who rented from it through Discover Cars; it asks each customer for a review after drop-off. The supplier review pages show it out of 10 and break it down: value for money, ease of finding, agent helpfulness, pickup speed, drop-off speed, car cleanliness, car condition. Check it before the price, because the same brand can run very differently from one location to the next.

Discover Cars itself. Trustpilot showed a 4.6 TrustScore (“Excellent”) from 288,092 reviews when we read it on Sept 27, 2026: 76% five-star, 5% one-star. Trustpilot also shows the profile is claimed with a paid subscription and that Discover Cars replied to 99% of negative reviews. Its own reviews page cites Trustpilot 4.6, Google 4.5 and 4.8 on both app stores.

Support. The help-centre chat is a 24/7 AI assistant; complex issues go through the chat and a human agent follows up. There’s no live chat with a person. The 24/7 channel its help centre describes is the AI assistant; a phone number appears on your booking page, but we couldn’t confirm its hours.

Price guarantee. Find the identical offer cheaper elsewhere within 24 hours of booking and Discover Cars pays the difference — as Booking Credit, not cash.

Pros and cons

The trade, plainly

What it does well

  • Shows many companies’ prices for the same pickup and drop-off at once
  • Puts one-way fees and young-driver fees into the total
  • Free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup
  • Supplier ratings from people who actually rented
  • Online payment doesn’t need the driver’s own card

What to watch

  • The counter still wants a credit card in the driver’s name for the deposit
  • In the US, some taxes and surcharges may sit outside the quote
  • Refunds default to Booking Credit
  • Full Coverage is a reimbursement product, not insurance, and doesn’t lower the deposit
  • “DiscoverCars’ Choice” hides the company until you’ve paid
  • Support is AI-first, with humans following up

You want loyalty creditEnterprise Plus doesn’t count prepaid rentals booked through a third party, including online travel agencies. How we use it

Where it earns its place on a cruise trip

We send readers to Discover Cars for one job in particular: pricing a one-way from an airport to a cruise port, where the drop charge and the port office’s shuttle vary by company. On a Port Canaveral trip, that means pricing Orlando airport to Cape Canaveral, checking that the drop-off is one of the three offices with a port shuttle (Budget, Avis or the Enterprise group), and picking the one whose hours fit your sail day, not just the lowest number. If the office you need isn’t offered, book it on the company’s own site. The Port Canaveral rental car guide and how one-way rentals to a cruise port work walk through it.

FAQ

Discover Cars FAQ

Is Discover Cars legit?

It’s a real, established booking site: its terms name Travel Drive GmbH of Zug, Switzerland as the contracting company, it says it has operated since 2013, and Trustpilot showed a 4.6 score from 288,092 reviews on Sept 27, 2026. It books you a car with a real rental company, which provides the car and takes the deposit.

Does Discover Cars charge a deposit?

Discover Cars doesn’t; the rental company does, as a hold on the main driver’s credit card at pickup. The amount varies by supplier and car class and is shown in each offer’s Rental Conditions. Buying Discover Cars’ Full Coverage doesn’t reduce it.

What is Discover Cars’ cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup, refunded as Booking Credit by default, with a link to take it to your original payment method instead. Inside 48 hours, the rental prepayment isn’t refunded, and a no-show gets no refund.

Is Discover Cars Full Coverage insurance?

Its terms say it is not an insurance product. It’s a reimbursement product: you pay the rental company for covered damage, then claim the money back from Discover Cars, up to the limit on your voucher.

Is Discover Cars cheaper than booking direct?

Sometimes, sometimes not; it depends on the route, the dates and the company. What it does is show many companies’ prices side by side. If you want loyalty points or use a discount code, booking direct is usually better.

Can you do a one-way rental with Discover Cars?

Yes. Discover Cars includes the one-way fee in the total it shows, breaks it out on the booking page, and the fee is paid to the rental company at pickup.
