The weekend wall
3 PM on a Saturday or Sunday: the hour to plan around
What the hours say
Budget and Avis both list 8 AM to 3 PM on weekends, against 8 to 6 on weekdays. The Enterprise, Alamo and National office stays open until 4 — but its last shuttle to the terminals goes at 3 PM, and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays its page shows the office closed.
So a weekend sailing with an afternoon landing at MCO is the plan most likely to come apart.
The drive from the airport runs about 45 minutes to an hour before you’ve even found the office — and the car still has to be checked in. Land after about noon on a Saturday or Sunday and that gets tight.
Count backward from 3 PM, not forward from your landing time.
If that leaves you racing, a shared shuttle or a night on the Cape is the better call, whatever the rate.
For every office’s hours on your exact day, with a checker, see the drop-off page for Port Canaveral.
Who says yes
Budget, Avis and one Enterprise office say yes; Hertz says no
Port Canaveral says the major rental companies run shuttles to and from the port, and tells you to arrange it with the company. The companies are pickier than that — here is what each says on its own page, and Hertz’s answer is the one to read twice.

Budget Port Canaveral Shuttle Service
Port shuttleCruise passengers only
HoursMon–Fri 8 AM–6 PM · Sat–Sun 8 AM–3 PM
ShuttleFree, both ways, cruise passengers only
“If you are dropping off a car rental before boarding the cruise, our shuttle can take you and your luggage to Port Canaveral.” The ride “typically takes less than 10 minutes.”
The only office page that spells out picking up at Budget MCO and dropping here before you board. Budget’s own pages put it “about 3 miles” and “1/2 mile south of Port Canaveral.”
Return during office hours. Budget doesn’t run shuttles to the airports.

Avis
Avis Port Canaveral Shuttle Service
Port shuttleCruise passengers only
HoursMon–Fri 8 AM–6 PM · Sat–Sun 8 AM–3 PM
ShuttleFree, both ways, cruise passengers only
“Our shuttle service includes transportation of all people in your group and any luggage.” After the cruise, “the shuttle will meet you at the pier.”
Its page says both “Drop Box Available” and “Drop Box NOT Available”, so plan to return inside office hours.
Return during office hours; a drop-box return leaves you responsible until the contract closes the next business day.

Enterprise · Alamo · National
Enterprise / Alamo / National Port Canaveral
Port shuttleCruise passengers only
HoursSun, Mon, Thu–Sat 7 AM–4 PM · shown closed Tue and Wed
ShuttleFree, both ways, cruise passengers only, last run 3 PM
Enterprise: “complimentary shuttle service to and from the cruise terminals … every 25-30 minutes, starting early in the morning and ending at 3PM.”
One office behind three brands, and its pages disagree: “located in Terminal B” and “4 miles from Port Canaveral”; a shuttle every 25–30 minutes (Enterprise) or every 15 (Alamo). Enterprise’s Disney-cruise page says hours vary with the ship schedule. Call before you build a plan on it.
After hours, keys go in the drop box and you stay responsible for the car until they open.

Hertz
Hertz Cape Canaveral – Astronaut Blvd
No port shuttle
HoursEvery day 8 AM–3 PM
ShuttleNo port shuttle, per Hertz
Hertz’s own answer: “No, there isn’t a shuttle from Port Canaveral to the Hertz rental car location on Astronaut Boulevard.” It points you to taxis.
Fine for renting around the Cape. For dropping a car before the ship, budget a taxi or rideshare for the last few miles.
Hertz’s terms for another Florida office (Tallahassee) say after-hours return charges accrue until the office reopens; we couldn’t read this office’s own terms, so ask.
Two Enterprise branches turn cruisers away in writing: the Cocoa and Titusville pages each say the branch “does not service cruise passengers.” Two more have no shuttle to the port: Enterprise on the Merritt Island Causeway, closed Sundays, and Hertz on Cheney Hwy in Titusville, closed on weekends. Dollar and Thrifty both show an address at 6799 N Atlantic Ave in Cape Canaveral, yet their sites blocked every attempt we made to check it, and a third-party listing calls it closed. We found no Payless page for the Space Coast and no Sixt or Fox office there at all, no rental office from any brand in Cocoa Beach itself, and no rental return at the cruise terminals.
Headcount
Is a rental worth it for your group?
Our read
Shuttles charge by the head and a car doesn’t. So a one-way rental starts to pay once three or more of you share it, or once it also covers a night in Orlando, at Disney, at Universal or on the beach — a trip, not just a transfer.
One or two people going straight from the airport to the ship usually do better on a shared shuttle — and they skip the office clock entirely.
Rent when
- Four fares on a shuttle would add up to more than one car
- You’re spending nights in Orlando, at Disney or at Universal before you sail
- You want a Kennedy Space Center day or a beach afternoon first
- Your flight lands after the shuttles’ sail-day pickups end
Pass when
- It’s one or two of you, airport to ship, nothing in between
- Your hotel already runs its own shuttle to the port
- You’d reach the office after about 2 PM on a Saturday or Sunday
- An unfamiliar car on sail morning sounds like stress, not freedom
Rather have it decided for you? Four questions get you a yes or a no.
Per seat or per car
What four people pay by car, and what they pay by shuttle
It opens at two travelers and a $45 day. Raise the headcount, then swap our rate for yours.
Rental, all in · 2 travelers

Against the other ways to do it
A sketch for comparing, not a quote. Our $45-a-day base rate is a placeholder. For scale, on Sept 27, 2026 the MCO page at Discover Cars showed “from $7/day” next to an “average car rental price $19 per day,” and the company cautions that its US prices might not cover every tax and surcharge. Put your real rate in — with no drop charge and a rate below about $28 a day, a car can undercut two shuttle fares. MCO’s $9-a-day facility charge comes from reports, not from the airport itself, and the fee percentage is our own guess; your quote will show both. Florida’s $2 daily surcharge and the sales tax (6.5% in Orange County, 7% in Brevard) come from state and county rules. Tolls are the published plaza rates added together, per the note under the toll table. Fuel is figured at 30 mpg and AAA’s Florida average for Sept 27, 2026. Shuttle lines use each company’s published one-way fare per person, and the taxi line is MCO’s approximate fare — the airport leaves open whether it’s per car and whether a tip is in it.
Leave it at two travelers and the shared shuttles usually come out ahead — at our assumed rate, anyway.
Push it to four and the car usually wins. Go Port and Cocoa Beach Express bill every seat, while the rental bills once — per car, not per person.
Where the lines cross depends on the quote you actually get, not ours, so type yours in.
Sail morning
Five stops from the MCO garage to the gangway
Before you fly
Reserve it as a one-way
Pickup at MCO, drop-off at the office you chose. Any one-way charge appears as you book — Enterprise and Alamo say “some one-way rentals” carry a drop charge, and Avis’s page says the majority of its locations don’t add one.
At MCO
Find the counter, then the garage
In Terminals A and B the counters are on Level 1; Terminal C puts them up on Level 4. The cars wait in the garage across the street.
On the road
S.R. 528 East, 45 minutes to an hour
The port puts it at about 45 minutes and Disney Cruise Line at about an hour. Two cashless toll plazas sit west of State Road 520, and the final stretch into the port costs nothing.
At the office
Hand over the keys, keep the bags
Budget’s page says its shuttle carries “you and your luggage,” and Avis’s says everyone in the group and any luggage. Refuel first if your contract asks for a full tank.
The last few miles
Ride the free shuttle to your terminal
Budget says it typically takes under 10 minutes. The Enterprise-brand office lists 3 PM as its final run.
MCO pickup levels and a sail-day timeline are in MCO to Port Canaveral by rental car. Going the other way? See the port to MCO after you disembark.
The Beachline
Cheap road, expensive program
From MCO it’s about $2.00 with a transponder, a toll you’d barely notice — until the rental company wraps its fee around it.
| One way, 2-axle car | Transponder | By plate | How we added it |
|---|
| From Orlando airport (MCO) | $2.00 | $4.00 | Beachline Main Plaza $1.08 / $2.16, Dallas Main Plaza $0.64 / $1.28, Turnpike share at Dallas $0.28 / $0.56 |
| From Universal or International Drive | $4.24 | $6.54 | adds the Beachline West Mainline Plaza, $2.24 / $2.54 |
| From Walt Disney World, by I-4 | $4.24 | $6.54 | I-4 to the Beachline: same plazas as from Universal |
| From Walt Disney World, by S.R. 417 | $5.44–$6.30 | $10.88–$12.04 | S.R. 417 north: Celebration Plaza ($0.86 / $1.16) if you join at I-4, John Young and Boggy Creek ($1.72 / $3.44 each), then the Beachline. Joining at Osceola Pkwy skips Celebration; one ramp toll there we could not confirm |
Our sums for a 2-axle car, one way, from the plaza rates CFX publishes (effective July 1, 2026) and Florida’s Turnpike publishes (Aug 14, 2026) — neither agency gives a trip total. Checked Sept 27, 2026
One sum we can’t settle. At the Dallas plaza, CFX’s chart says $0.64 / $1.28, while the Turnpike separately claims a $0.28 / $0.56 share of the same plaza. We count both. Should the CFX figure already fold in the Turnpike’s cut, every transponder total above is 28¢ too high and every plate total 56¢ too high — and neither agency says. Cash is out either way: CFX roads went fully cashless on Sept 30, 2025, and Turnpike toll points don’t take it. In a rental, the plate column is what the company passes on to you before its program fee.
| Program | What you’d pay | Source |
|---|
| TollPass (Enterprise, Alamo, National) | A $4.95 fee on every day the car goes through a toll, never more than $34.65 per rental. The tolls come on top, at whichever is highest of the video, cash or undiscounted rate. You’re enrolled the moment you drive through. | terms |
| e-Toll (Avis, Budget) | A $6.95 fee on each toll day, topping out at $34.95 per rental, with tolls billed at non-discounted rates. Not the same thing as e-Toll Unlimited, a different product that bills each day of the rental. | terms |
| PlatePass All-Inclusive (Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty) | In Florida, $14.99 for each day of the rental with tolls included, up to a weekly cap we couldn’t pin down. Decline it and still roll through a cashless toll, and you pay $9.99 per toll day plus the tolls. | terms |
| A transponder you already own | SunPass, SunPass PRO, E-PASS and E-ZPass all read on these roads. Put the rental’s plate and your dates on the account and take them off when you’re done; E-PASS warns a new plate can need up to 48 hours to link. | Turnpike |
| CFX Visitor Toll Pass | A free hangtag with a $10 deposit that goes toward tolls — but only when the car is picked up and returned at MCO, so a one-way to the port can’t use it. | CFX |
Each company’s own toll page, read Sept 27, 2026; Sixt’s pages quote two different fees, so Sixt isn’t here. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Two dollars of asphalt is not the problem — the wrapper is. On a one-day one-way, Enterprise’s TollPass adds its day fee to the plate rate and turns that $2 drive into roughly $9, and Avis’s e-Toll lands nearer $11.
Own a SunPass, an E-PASS or an E-ZPass? Pack it, and put the rental’s plate on your account before you leave home.
Orange vs. Brevard
Why an MCO pickup costs more than its daily rate
The rate on the search results is where the bill starts, not where it ends.
| Line on the bill | Amount | Where it comes from | Status |
|---|
| State rental surcharge | $2.00 per day, capped at 30 days | Set in Fla. Stat. 212.0606, and it gets taxed too | Verified |
| Tax on an MCO pickup (Orange County) | 6.5% | The 6% state rate plus a 0.5% county surtax | Verified |
| Tax near the port (Brevard County) | 7% through 2026 | The 6% state rate plus 1% for the county, per Florida DOR, whose schedule has both Brevard half-cent surtaxes ending Dec 31, 2026. Local news reports the lagoon half-cent, one of the two, is up for renewal on the November 2026 ballot | 7% verified |
| MCO facility charge | $9.00 a day, up to 7 days | Reported at that level since Nov 1, 2024. We couldn’t load the airport’s own notice, so we list it as reported and unconfirmed | Reported |
| Concession recovery, vehicle licence fees and the like | Set by each company | No published figure; Budget’s MCO page names these fees and gives no amounts | Not published |
The airport stacks up. MCO’s charges ride on top of the base rate, and then the tax is figured on all of it. Pick up from an office near the port and MCO’s airport charges shouldn’t appear, though a company can still add its own fees — and you’d pay Brevard’s 7%, not Orange County’s 6.5%. Discover Cars says some US taxes and surcharges may sit outside its quoted price, so open “Rate Excludes” before you put two quotes side by side.
Seats and suitcases
Car seats, suitcases and the car that holds both
Plan for the luggage first; the seat count usually takes care of itself.
| Vehicle, as Enterprise classes it | Seats | Bags it lists |
|---|
| 8-passenger minivan | 8 | 5 |
| Standard SUV | 5 | 5 |
| 7-passenger minivan | 7 | 5 |
| Midsize car | 5 | 3 |
| Full-size SUV | 7 | 3 |
Enterprise’s US figures, sorted by luggage space; the full-size SUV’s 3 bags seem to assume the third row is up, Avis splits its bag counts into large and small, and we found no Hertz numbers to compare. Checked Sept 27, 2026
A week of cruise clothes is the real squeeze. Enterprise says a midsize car seats five but takes three bags, so four adults with cruise luggage belong in a standard SUV or a minivan — five bags, not three.
Florida wants children 5 and under in a crash-tested restraint: a separate carrier or built-in seat through age 3, then a carrier, built-in seat or booster at 4 and 5.
Renting one adds up. Avis quotes a US price of “usually” $14 a day, to a maximum of $84 a rental, and bills $50 if the seat doesn’t go back to the branch it came from — awkward on a one-way.
JetBlue, Southwest, Delta and American each check a car seat free, so we’d fly with yours.
Before you pay
Book the hours, then the price
A comparison site earns its keep here. The three offices with a port shuttle sit under different brands, and one search shows which of them will do MCO to the Cape on your date and what each quotes, one-way fee included.
Pick the one whose hours fit your arrival — a cheaper office that’s closed when you pull in is no saving.

FAQ
What Space Coast cruisers ask about renting
Can you drop a rental car at the Port Canaveral cruise terminal?
Not at the terminal itself: we found no rental return at the terminals. What you can do is drop at Budget, Avis or the shared Enterprise, Alamo and National office a few miles away in Cape Canaveral, since all three say they run a free shuttle to the ship for cruise passengers.
Which rental companies have a shuttle to Port Canaveral?
Three offices say so on their own pages, and only for cruise passengers: Avis (6650 N Atlantic Ave), Budget (8401 Astronaut Blvd) and the Mullet Rd office at number 710, run jointly by Enterprise, Alamo and National. Hertz’s Astronaut Blvd office says it has no shuttle.
How much are tolls from Orlando airport to Port Canaveral?
Roughly $2.00 one way with a transponder and $4.00 by plate for a car — our sum of the published CFX and Turnpike plaza rates. A rental company’s toll program then adds its own daily fee.
What time do the Port Canaveral rental offices close on weekends?
Budget and Avis both list 8 AM to 3 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. The shared Enterprise, Alamo and National office opens 7 to 4 on the days it opens, sends its final shuttle at 3 PM, and shows itself closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Is a rental car cheaper than a shuttle from MCO to Port Canaveral?
For a couple, usually not. Shared shuttles start around $28 to $30 a person (Cocoa Beach Express “as low as” $28, Go Port $29.99), so one or two people usually spend less that way — for three or more, a car priced once often costs less. Try your own quote in the calculator above.
Do I need a car seat in a Florida rental car?
For children 5 and under, yes. Florida law calls for a crash-tested child restraint: a separate carrier or an integrated seat through age 3, and at 4 and 5 a booster is allowed.
