Port Canaveral to MCO Rental Car After Your Cruise

On the way home the ship stops setting the pace and your flight takes over. Budget’s and Avis’s pages say their shuttle meets you at the pier, and a car collected near the port, away from the airport, shouldn’t carry MCO’s airport charges.

What time does your flight leave?

Our read

The offices open at 7 or 8 AM even on weekends and no check-in window is chasing you, so your flight is the only clock left. For one or two people a shared shuttle still costs less — for a family, or anyone giving Orlando a few more days, the rental usually wins.

A flight after lunch is where the car starts paying its way.

The shuttles deliver you to MCO with hours to spare, while a car can spend that same morning at Kennedy Space Center or the beach — and still leave time to drop it.

The car earns it when

  • Three or more of you are riding
  • Orlando gets a few more days before you fly
  • A shuttle would park you at MCO for hours before a late flight
  • You’d like a Kennedy Space Center stop, or the beach, on the way home

Take the shuttle when

  • Just two of you, or one, with a mid-morning flight
  • A cruise-line or shuttle transfer already fits your flight
  • You wanted the Enterprise office and you’re back on a Tuesday or Wednesday

Three offices send a shuttle to the port

Before you sail

Book the cruise-shuttle listing

Budget and Avis each keep a separate “Port Canaveral Shuttle Service” page for cruise passengers (Budget CC5, Avis P3F) — book that one, not the ordinary listing at the same address.

Down the gangway

Look for the shuttle

Budget says you’ll find its shuttle “on the pier after exiting the cruise”, and Avis that “the shuttle will meet you at the pier, or you can call”. Enterprise: “each cruise ship has a specific pickup area where our shuttle will meet you.”

At the counter

Sign for the car

On weekends Budget and Avis open at 8 AM and the Enterprise-brand office at 7. If no shuttle turns up, Budget is 321-784-0634 and Avis is 321-783-3643.

On the road

S.R. 528 West to MCO

It’s the sail-day toll road, pointed west this time. About 45 minutes to an hour later the car goes back to the garage at whichever terminal you’re flying from.

The shuttle covers pier to office, and that’s all. Budget’s page says it doesn’t run shuttles to the airports, so from the counter onward you’re the driver.

    The rental, line by line
Against the other ways to do it

Treat every figure as an estimate, not a quote. Our base rate of $45 a day is assumed, so swap in the rate you’re offered; a pickup near the port carries Brevard’s 7% tax but shouldn’t carry MCO’s airport charges. The fee % starts at zero because the companies don’t publish their own fees as a figure — enter whatever your quote lists. Westbound tolls assume the same mainline plazas and rates, since the agencies’ sheets don’t split by direction. Fuel is 30 mpg, priced at the AAA Florida average for Sept 27, 2026. A one-way drop charge is the line most likely to flip the answer — if your quote shows one, add it.

Brevard’s 7% sales tax sits half a point above Orange County’s 6.5% — so the saving comes from the airport’s own charges, collected at airport locations, not from the tax.

Brevard’s two half-cent surtaxes both expire Dec 31, 2026, per Florida DOR.

Local news reports that a renewal of one of them, the lagoon half-cent, is on the November 2026 ballot, so a 2027 rental could be taxed at a different rate.

    Orlando first?

Keep the car if the parks come next

If Orlando comes before the flight, collect the car at the port and hold on to it until you fly — it carries the cruise luggage from hotel to hotel.

Disney’s resort hotels now include overnight self-parking for their guests. The Universal hotels we checked charge for it: $36 a night self-parking at Portofino Bay and Sapphire Falls, $30 at Stella Nova, plus tax.

For when two shorter rentals beat one long one, and the rest of the detail, read Orlando before or after the cruise, Disney World and Universal.

    Which listing

The listing that includes the pier pickup

On a comparison site, set Cape Canaveral or Port Canaveral as the pickup and Orlando airport as the drop-off.

Then make sure the pickup office is one of the three with a port shuttle.

Budget and Avis list their cruise pages apart from their regular pages for the same address. The cruise listing is the one with the pier pickup — the other is easy to book by mistake.

    FAQ

Questions about the drive home to MCO

Can a rental car company pick me up at the Port Canaveral cruise terminal?

Three say they will: Budget, Avis, and the one office shared by Enterprise, Alamo and National. Budget’s page tells you to find its shuttle on the pier once you’re off the ship, and Avis says it will meet you at the pier or you can call.

What time do the Port Canaveral rental offices open on weekends?

Saturday and Sunday, Budget and Avis list 8 AM and the Enterprise, Alamo and National office lists 7 AM. That office is shown closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so check your debarkation day.

Is it cheaper to rent near the port than at MCO?

It can be, but compare the total quote rather than the day rate. A pickup near the port shouldn’t carry MCO’s airport charges; on the other hand Brevard’s sales tax is 7% against Orange County’s 6.5%, and a one-way drop charge may apply.

How early can I fly home after a Port Canaveral cruise?

The ship decides that, not the car. Go Port’s shuttles back to MCO run from 7:00 AM until debarkation is complete, and Carnival’s transfer wants return flights no earlier than 12:50 PM. A rental adds just the drive, about 45 minutes to an hour, and the return at MCO.

Where do I return a rental car at Orlando airport?

In the garage for the terminal you’re flying from. Alamo, Enterprise and National use level R1 (Parking C1 at Terminal C). Avis, Budget and Payless use R1 at Terminal A, R2 at Terminal B and Parking C2. Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty use R2 at A, R1 at B and Parking C2.
