Need a car?
For the ride to the ship, a rental is a hard sell. Disneyland changes that
What decides it
Uber’s route pages put the average at $53 for LAX to the World Cruise Terminal and $48 for LAX to the Long Beach terminal, and Carnival’s transfer starts at $34.99 a person — if you’re sailing Carnival. Against those, the ride itself is a weak reason to rent. A car starts to earn its cost on the days around the cruise: Disneyland, the Getty, the desert. Catalina cuts the other way — the island has no rental cars, so it’s a reason to skip the car, not to book one.
Book one if
- Disneyland, Universal or the Getty is on the list
- You’re driving on after the ship, toward Palm Springs, Santa Barbara or San Diego
- Four or more of you can split one car
- The return fits inside a branch’s weekday hours
Leave it alone if
- You land on sail day and head straight to the ship
- Catalina is your only side trip
- A downtown Long Beach hotel is charging you $47 a night to park
- The return would land on a Sunday in San Pedro
Still unsure? Four questions get you a straight answer, and the math sits behind it.
San Pedro, disputed
The free ride: one claim, two answers
Six desks near the ports, each with its own hours and its own word on the ship. Read the San Pedro pair against the note above.
Two sources, opposite answers. The Port of Los Angeles and the LA Waterfront’s cruise FAQ both say Enterprise and Hertz on West 6th Street give free pick-up and drop-off to the terminal, Monday to Friday 8 to 6 and Saturday 9 to 1, closed Sunday. Enterprise’s own San Pedro page says the office “does not provide pickup or return service” to the cruise ships. Hertz’s page doesn’t mention the port at all. We’d ask the branch about your date before counting on a ride — the people doing the driving are the only ones who can promise it.

Enterprise’s page: “This office does not provide pickup or return service to the Port of Los Angeles or Long Beach cruise ships.” The Port of LA’s says it gives free pick-ups and drop-offs to the terminal.
It sits about 0.9 miles from the World Cruise Center and 7.9 from the Long Beach terminal, by our estimates, and takes no after-hours returns. Sundays it’s closed.
Plan on a short Uber or cab to the ship, unless the branch confirms a ride when you call.

ShuttleNone; cars are in the lot across from the Historic Terminal
Since Dec 2025 the counters share the Historic Terminal: Avis and Budget; Enterprise, National and Alamo; Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty.
The closest airport to the Long Beach terminal at about 11 miles, and 15 from the World Cruise Center, by our estimates. Enterprise has an after-hours key drop.
From the counters, Uber’s own route pages average $33 to the Long Beach terminal and $46 to San Pedro, and a cab does the same job.
No rental counter turned up at either terminal, so every option is a branch plus a ride you’d have to arrange. The nearest ones sit 0.9 to 1.8 miles from their own terminal — close, but not at it.
Farther out, Enterprise has branches in Lomita on Pacific Coast Highway, two in Carson and one in Torrance. The Lomita and Carson ones close on weekends or Sundays — a longer drive doesn’t fix the Sunday problem.
No Wilmington or Harbor City office turned up for us, and neither did a National, Alamo, Dollar or Thrifty branch in San Pedro.
Sunday problem
Will anyone be there to take it back?
Pick your sail day and the time you’d reach a branch. The checker compares it with every published hour we found.
Try 11:00 on a Sunday in the checker and the San Pedro branches drop out — slide it to 10:00 on a Monday and they’re back.
Enterprise and Hertz on West 6th are closed Sundays. Downtown Long Beach’s Avis, Budget and Sixt open 9 to 2 on Saturdays and Sundays, so plan around the 2 o’clock close, not the 9 o’clock opening.
A key drop doesn’t save you. Enterprise in San Pedro and Enterprise downtown take no after-hours returns, and the only places that do are Sixt’s garage and the drop box at Long Beach Airport. We wouldn’t lean on either before a cruise — the car stays on your contract until a branch checks it in, and you’ll be at sea by then.
Two terminals
Which terminal you sail from picks the branch

| Parking, if you drive | Free for the first hour, then $2 an hour up to $23 a day ($40 oversized) | The terminal garage, $23 a day, with a 7-foot height limit |
| Closest rental desks | Enterprise and Hertz on West 6th Street, about 0.9 miles | Sixt, Enterprise and Avis/Budget downtown, about 1.6 to 1.8 miles |
| Closest airport | LAX, about 18 mi; Long Beach Airport, about 15 | Long Beach Airport, about 11 mi; LAX, about 20 |

The Port of Los Angeles, the Long Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau and Catalina Express, read Sept 28, 2026, with distances from our own route estimates. Checked Sept 28, 2026
By our estimate the two terminals are about 8 miles apart by road, so a branch that suits one is a poor fit for the other.
No rental company we found serves the Carnival terminal in Long Beach. On big days the garage fills as well — Carnival has told guests to arrange transportation that doesn’t need parking.
Your cruise documents name your terminal, so read them first and choose the branch second.
Ride math

Against the other ways to do it
Everything below is our arithmetic, not a quote. The car is priced at $50 a day, which is our assumption. Discover Cars’ own search pages listed “from $38” a day at LAX and “from $47” at Long Beach Airport on Sept 27, 2026, and it calls its prices approximate, so overwrite ours with the rate you’re actually offered. LAX adds two things: a customer facility charge ($9 for each day of the rental, up to five) and a concession fee, which we assumed at 11% because no company publishes one for 2026. Tax is the 3.5% California tourism assessment, and only that. Whether sales tax applies is disputed among the sources, and if your own quote lists it, add that figure in the fee box. Gas is priced at 30 mpg over the LAX-to-San Pedro drive, using AAA’s Sept 28, 2026 Los Angeles–Long Beach average of $6.41 a gallon. No company publishes a one-way drop charge, so that box waits for your quote, and the branch-to-ship Uber or cab comes on top. Tolls are zero unless you wander into an express lane.
Take our assumed $50 a day and a one-way car from LAX lands near $71 — before any drop charge, and before the cab from the branch to the ship.
Two of you on Carnival’s transfer start at about $70. Uber’s own average is $53 for the whole car — an average, not a quote.
Add two more travelers and the answer moves. At four, the car is about $82 at $60 a day, before a drop charge and a cab. Carnival’s transfer starts at $140 for the four of you — a per-seat price, so it climbs with every person you add.
The airport-to-ship page prices the round trip.

LAWA, Long Beach Airport and Carnival, read Sept 28, 2026, with distances from our own route estimates. Under 25: $27 a day at Avis and Budget, $22 at Fox, and $19 at Hertz on its US page. Checked Sept 28, 2026
LAX moved all twelve brands into its new center in March 2026 — you reach it by the free shuttle from the purple sign at baggage claim.
The people mover meant to link the two is delayed to early January 2027, say LAWA and local news — so the shuttle stays the only way in for now.
Long Beach Airport is the shorter drive to either terminal, and its counters keep late hours — the thing a Sunday return needs.
Branch vs. airport
Picking up downtown saves money and costs you hours
| Days | From the LAX center | From a downtown branch |
|---|
| One day | $67 | $52 |
| Three days | $200 | $155 |
| Five days | $334 | $259 |
| Seven days | $449 | $362 |
Totals use a $50 base rate we assumed, LAX’s $9 a day (five days at most), an 11% fee we also assumed, and the 3.5% California assessment. Fuel isn’t counted. Illustrative
On a one-day rental the LAX pickup carries about $15 more in charges and tax — small, until you multiply it by the days.
The flat $9 stops after day five, yet the 11% fee keeps growing with the rental, so the gap keeps widening at a slower pace.
What a downtown branch costs you is hours, not dollars: shorter days, and some are shut on Sundays. Nobody publishes a fleet count — so we can’t tell you whether it also holds fewer cars.
Price both before you decide.
California’s add-ons
What the state adds, and what nobody publishes
There’s no Florida-style surcharge here — California has a 3.5% assessment, airport charges that vary by airport, and a sales-tax question the sources leave open.
| What | How much | Why it applies | Status |
|---|
| California’s tourism assessment | 3.5% | A state assessment on passenger-car rentals; the California Tourism Marketing Act set it up | Verified |
| Sales tax on the car | The sources conflict | A company can pay tax when it buys the car instead of charging renters, and state guidance says the receipts then go untaxed. Some quotes still print a sales-tax line, so we add none | Unsettled |
| Customer facility charge (airports) | $9 a day, five-day cap | State law allows either up to $10 a contract, or as much as $9 a day for five days | Verified |
| LAX facility charge and fee | $9 a day; about 11% | A customer facility charge of $9 a rental day, capped at five days ($45), in LAWA’s May 2025 report; LAWA proposed $12 from Jan 1, 2026, and we couldn’t confirm it took effect; LAWA takes a 10% privilege fee, which renters usually see as about 11.11% (a 2023 fee guide); no company publishes it for 2026, so we use 11 | Partly secondary |
| Long Beach Airport charges | Not published | Long Beach Airport doesn’t publish its rental charges, and Budget’s page mentions only a generic California “$10 per contract” facility charge, so the calculator uses a placeholder | Not published |
| Vehicle license recovery fee (VLF) | A daily line item | It has to print as its own line on the quote; no daily amount turned up in what we read | Not published |
| Florida’s $2 daily surcharge | Not charged here | That one is Florida’s law; California uses the assessment in the first row | Checked |
Read Sept 28, 2026 on the state’s tourism commission and tax agency pages, LAWA’s, and each company’s. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Pickup point moves the total. A downtown branch skips the daily facility charge and concession fee that ride along with an LAX rental. Discover Cars warns that a US quote may leave out some taxes and surcharges, so read what yours omits before setting two quotes side by side.
Express lanes
The only tolls are the ones you choose
Neither drive to the ports crosses a toll — the trouble is toll lanes marked off by double white lines on the I-10 and I-110 through Los Angeles County, and on SR-91 and I-15 inland.
Enterprise’s TollPass, which National and Alamo share, doesn’t cover Southern California’s express lanes. Hertz and Avis run programs with rules of their own, so don’t assume the rental’s pass forgives a lane you drifted into.
Should a toll get charged anyway, it’s billed through the rental company’s own program. Hertz’s PlatePass is $5.95 a day with no cap — unlike the other two, which stop at a ceiling.
Avis and Budget charge $6.95 a day up to $34.95, while Enterprise, National and Alamo charge $4.95 for each toll day, topping out at $34.65, per the Golden Gate Bridge district’s list.
Stay in the general lanes and none of it applies.
Seats and bags
If the group needs a minivan
| Enterprise class | People | Bags |
|---|
| Midsize car | 5 | 3 |
| Standard SUV | 5 | 5 |
| Full-size SUV | 7 | 3 |
| 7-passenger minivan | 7 | 5 |
Capacities as Enterprise prints them for its US fleet; the car on your quote may differ. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Enterprise’s full-size SUV seats 7 but lists only 3 bags, while the 7-passenger minivan lists 7 people and 5 bags. A group that size with cruise luggage needs the van, not the SUV.
American, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue each say a car seat can be checked free, so bring your own, not the counter’s.
On the seat law, a child under 2 travels rear-facing until reaching 40 pounds or 40 inches. Anyone under 8 and shorter than 4 feet 9 inches rides in the back seat with a booster or car seat (Vehicle Code 27360 and 27363).

FAQ
Asked before renting for an LA cruise
Can you rent a car at the Los Angeles cruise port itself?
We found no counter at the World Cruise Center in San Pedro or at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal. The nearest branches are Enterprise and Hertz on West 6th Street, about 0.9 miles from the World Cruise Center, and three downtown Long Beach branches that sit between 1.6 and 1.8 miles from the Carnival terminal. The Port of LA says the San Pedro pair give free rides to the ship, Enterprise’s own page says it doesn’t, and that’s a reason to call first.
Are the San Pedro rental offices open on Sunday?
They aren’t. Enterprise and Hertz on West 6th are both closed Sundays, according to their own pages. Downtown Long Beach fares better, with Avis, Budget and Sixt open Sundays 9 to 2, while Long Beach Airport’s counters keep daily hours of roughly 7 AM to 10 PM.
Does Uber beat a rental car from LAX to the Los Angeles cruise port?
For two people it does, going by Uber’s own figures. Its route pages list $53 as the average for the World Cruise Terminal and $48 for Long Beach, against roughly $71 for a one-way rental at a $50 daily rate we assumed, and that’s before any drop charge. The Uber numbers are averages rather than quotes, and a car pulls ahead once it has more people or more errands to spread across.
Which taxes and fees apply to a Los Angeles rental car?
The rental itself carries California’s 3.5% tourism assessment. At an airport, add a customer facility charge ($9 a day at LAX, five days at most) and a concession fee. The sources leave sales tax unsettled, and a few quotes do print a line for it, so read yours before assuming either way.
Are there tolls between LAX and the cruise ports?
Not on the drives to either terminal. The risk is the express lanes on the I-10 and I-110, toll lanes behind double white lines that Enterprise’s toll program doesn’t cover. Stay in the general lanes and you won’t meet one.
How far is LAX from the Los Angeles cruise terminals?
The port puts San Pedro 18 miles from LAX. Our own route estimate is about 18 miles to the World Cruise Center and 20 to the Long Beach terminal, roughly 25 minutes with no traffic, though Los Angeles traffic changes that a lot.
