Which of these plans needs a car?
Sort the plans into piles and the car question mostly answers itself. Catalina goes in the no pile without an argument, because there’s no car ferry and nothing on the island to rent. From the World Cruise Center the ferry berth is about a quarter mile away. Disneyland is the yes — one day from downtown Long Beach with $40 parking comes to about $104 for two at our assumptions, with the cost shared by everyone in the car. The rest is a maybe.
| The plan | Car? | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Catalina | No | There’s no car ferry, and the island has no rental cars |
| Disneyland | Yes, if two or more of you go | Amtrak or Metrolink plus a bus will get you there; a car splits its cost across the group |
| Getty, Griffith Observatory, Universal | Yes, for one or two of them | They sit 30 to 35 miles out, so pick the one or two you care about |
| Queen Mary, Aquarium, Battleship Iowa | No | All three are on or near the water, in Long Beach and San Pedro |
Our read of the sources on this page, as of Sept 28, 2026 Checked Sept 28, 2026
Two things move any row of that table. The first is head count: a rental that’s a bargain for four is a poor deal for one person — who should price a tour or the train first.
The second is the calendar. The San Pedro branches are closed on Sundays, and a Sunday drop-off there won’t work.
Either way, don’t rent a car just to park it in a $47-a-night hotel garage.
Catalina, and the car you can’t bring
| What we found | |
|---|---|
| The boat | Catalina Express is $42 one way for an adult, so $84 round trip, from Berth 95 in San Pedro (1 hour 15 minutes) or from Long Beach (1 hour) |
| Where it leaves | Berth 95 sits on Swinford Street at Harbor Boulevard, the same street as the World Cruise Center, about a quarter mile away in a straight line |
| From Long Beach | Catalina Express’s Long Beach terminal is at 320 Golden Shore, about 2 miles by road from the Long Beach cruise terminal, too far to walk with luggage |
| Cars | There’s no car ferry and no car rental on Catalina |
| Parking | Catalina Express parking is $23 a day in San Pedro, and about $25 to $27 in Long Beach; the Long Beach page doesn’t say which year its April price change applies to |
| Bags | Two bags a person, 50 pounds each |
| Getting around Avalon | In Avalon, a four-person golf cart is $135 for two hours, drivers 25 and over, inside the city limits |
Fares and rules from Catalina Express, Love Catalina and the golf-cart company, read Sept 28, 2026 Checked Sept 28, 2026
Catalina is the one plan where thinking about a car gets you nowhere — the island has none to rent, and no car ferry serves it. That settles it.
Sail from the World Cruise Center and Berth 95 is about a quarter mile off in a straight line, so a Catalina day around the cruise costs a ticket, not a car.
Long Beach changes the picture a little. Catalina Express’s terminal there is on Golden Shore, about 2 miles by road from the Carnival terminal, too far to walk with luggage. Budget for a ride, not a rental.
Six sights, three of them near the water
| Place | Price and hours | From the terminals | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Queen Mary | $45 for an adult, $40 for a child; parking is $25 a day at most | Right beside the Long Beach terminal | source |
| Aquarium of the Pacific | $49.95 for an adult, $34.95 for ages 3–11 | Downtown Long Beach | source |
| Battleship USS Iowa | Open Thursday to Monday, 10 to 5, and shut Tuesday and Wednesday | On the San Pedro waterfront, a short way from the World Cruise Center | source |
| Getty Center | Free with a timed reservation; parking $25, $15 after 3 PM, $10 after 6 | 30 to 33 miles | source |
| Griffith Observatory | Free; closed Mondays; paid parking at the top, free lot farther down | 30 to 33 miles | source |
| Universal Studios Hollywood | A one-day ticket roughly $109 to $149 and parking $40 before 5 PM, from third-party sites we couldn’t confirm on its own pages | 33 to 35 miles | source |

Start with the three where a car just adds hassle.
The Queen Mary sits beside the Long Beach terminal, the Aquarium of the Pacific is downtown, and the Battleship Iowa is in San Pedro near the World Cruise Center. A ride covers all three — though the Iowa keeps two closed days a week, so check it first.
The Getty, Griffith Observatory and Universal are another matter. At 30 to 35 miles out, the drive alone runs 44 to 47 minutes each way with no traffic — pick one or two, not all three.
Let someone else drive
Viator sells a Los Angeles city tour from both cruise terminals for $159 a person and up — so the price multiplies with your group. It runs 7 to 8 hours from a 9 AM pickup, and you’re either back at the ship by 5 PM or dropped at LAX at 4 to 4:30.
Norwegian’s LA tours that end at the airport are $99.99 an adult for about 5 hours — and only for domestic flights after 5 PM or international ones after 6. Royal Caribbean’s airport-transfer excursion pages both read “no longer available”, so skip them.
Set any tour’s price beside the rental you’d split before you decide, after multiplying the tour by your head count.
Disneyland is the plan a rental suits
| What we found | |
|---|---|
| Parking | Disneyland parking is $40 a day, or $60 preferred |
| Lockers | Lockers run $7 to $15 a day |
| Tickets | We couldn’t read Disney’s own ticket page, which loads by script; third-party sites put a one-day ticket between $104 and $224 by date, so check Disney |
| By train and bus | By train, Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner or Metrolink to ARTIC, then an ART bus about 30 minutes; the OCTA 50 bus runs from Long Beach to the resort but ends downtown, short of the terminals |
| By shuttle | The Long Beach Shuttle’s Disneyland Express lists $135 one way from the Long Beach terminal and $150 from San Pedro, without saying whether the fare covers a person or a vehicle |
| From the terminals | 27 miles, about 37 min, from the Long Beach terminal; 33 miles, about 42 min, from the World Cruise Center. Our estimates, no traffic |
Disneyland’s pages, the Long Beach Shuttle and our route estimates, read Sept 28, 2026 Checked Sept 28, 2026
You can reach Disneyland without a car: Amtrak or Metrolink runs to ARTIC, and an ART bus takes about 30 minutes from there. The OCTA 50 bus runs from Long Beach to the resort but stops downtown, short of the terminals.
For two or more of you the car looks like the simpler plan — and the next section puts a price on it.
On your own, price the train and bus against the car before you decide.
One Disneyland day for four, in dollars
Four people, a downtown pickup, one day. Overwrite whatever doesn’t fit your plans.
The rental, line by line
Consider this a rough sketch rather than a quote. We priced the bigger car at $60 a day, our own assumption. Discover Cars’ pages on Sept 27, 2026 quoted LAX from $38 and Long Beach Airport from $47 a day, though they call those prices approximate, so replace ours with your real quote. At LAX, expect a $9-a-day facility charge that stops after day five, plus an 11% concession fee that is our assumption, since nobody publishes the 2026 figure. The one tax included is the 3.5% California tourism assessment. Sales tax is contested, so anything your quote adds belongs in the fee field. Fuel uses AAA’s Los Angeles–Long Beach figure for Sept 28, 2026, $6.41 a gallon, at 30 mpg, and none of these drives has a toll unless you stray into an express lane. The rental is a single day from downtown Long Beach, switchable to LAX, with fuel for about 56 miles to Disneyland and back by our estimate. Park tickets are left out because they cost the same however you arrive. The Long Beach Shuttle doesn’t say if its fare is per person or per car, so type the quote you’re given.
Price the bigger car at $60 a day and one day comes to about $114 with parking. That covers the whole car — roughly $29 each at four people.
The Disneyland Express lists $135 each way — and per person or per car, the car undercuts it at these assumptions. Its page doesn’t say which.
For two of you the same day is about $104 at $50 a day — and a second day adds little beyond the daily rate.
The Disneyland day, from pickup to the ship
Most of the work in a Disneyland day is the pickup and the return, not the drive.
| When | Where | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| The day before | Downtown Long Beach | Collect the car. Avis, Budget and Sixt keep Sunday hours of 9 to 2, and it’s worth booking ahead. |
| Early | Long Beach to Anaheim | The Long Beach terminal is about 27 miles from the park by our estimate, and traffic will stretch the trip. |
| At the park | Disneyland | Disneyland parking is $40 a day, or $60 preferred. Lockers run $7 to $15 a day. Keep anything valuable out of the car. |
| Evening | Back to Long Beach | Drop the car off before the branch closes, or hold it overnight and return it on your way to boarding. |
| Sail day | Branch to terminal | Between 1.6 and 1.8 miles separate the downtown Long Beach branches from the Carnival terminal, by our estimates, and none publishes a ride there, so plan on an Uber or a cab. |
Hours from the branches’ own pages, distances from our estimates, Sept 28, 2026 Checked Sept 28, 2026
If the timeline lands on a Sunday, work backward from the 2 PM close.
Search the car first, then buy your own tickets
Search downtown Long Beach on Discover Cars, or LAX if that’s where you land, and read the pickup and return hours before you look at the price. A cheap car that’s closed when you bring it back isn’t cheap.
Buy Disneyland tickets on Disney’s own site for your date, and reserve the Getty’s free timed entry ahead if it’s on your list.

Quick answers on Catalina and Disneyland
Can I rent a car on Catalina Island?
Not on the island, and you can’t bring one over either, since there’s no car rental there and no car ferry. Catalina Express runs passenger boats from San Pedro and Long Beach. In Avalon you can rent a four-person golf cart for $135 for two hours, if you’re 25 or older.
How far is Disneyland from the Los Angeles cruise port?
Our route estimates, with no traffic, put it at about 27 miles and 37 minutes from the Long Beach terminal, or 33 miles and 42 minutes from the World Cruise Center. Southern California traffic adds a lot to both.
How much is parking at Disneyland?
Disneyland’s own parking page lists standard parking at $40 a day and preferred at $60. Lockers run $7 to $15 a day.
How much is the ferry to Catalina?
It’s $84 round trip for an adult, because Catalina Express charges $42 one way from either port. The crossing takes about 1 hour 15 minutes from San Pedro and about 1 hour from Long Beach, and San Pedro parking is $23 a day.
Is there a shuttle from the cruise port to Disneyland?
On paper there is: the Long Beach Shuttle sells a Disneyland Express at $135 one way from the Long Beach terminal and $150 from San Pedro, and doesn’t say if that covers a person or a whole vehicle. By transit, take Amtrak or Metrolink to ARTIC and then an ART bus, about 30 minutes.
