Sixt reaches cruisers through downtown desks, many inside hotels — the InterContinental in San Diego, the Westin Boston Seaport, the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans. That puts it near the terminal at 10 of our 23 ports, with no pier shuttle at any of them. Its border rules are tight — Mexico never, Canada only if the car comes back — so check them before a cross-border sailing.

Who it suits
When Sixt is the right call for a cruise
Book Sixt if
You're sailing from Boston, where the Westin Boston Seaport desk at 425 Summer St is 1.0 mile from the terminal and takes keys back 24 hours a day.
You're returning a car in Manhattan, where the 20 Morris St branch near Battery Park lists 24-hour returns.
You own a toll transponder — Sixt says you may use your own for the whole rental.
Look elsewhere if
You're sailing from Port Canaveral, Port Everglades or Port Tampa Bay, where we found no Sixt desk near the terminal — its Tampa city office is out by Westshore.
Your ship leaves from Seward, Mobile, Québec City or Montréal — we found no Sixt desk at any of them.
You're renting in Florida as a couple, because Sixt doesn't count a spouse as an authorized driver there.
You want to drive Seattle to Vancouver one way, or slip down to Ensenada from San Diego.

Sixt's desks near the ships, port by port
Sixt has a desk near the terminal at 10 of our 23 ports, airport counters only at 9, and no presence we could find at 4. None advertises a pier shuttle, and weekend hours run short — Long Beach's 100 Pacific Ave desk, 1.7 miles out, opens 9 to 2 on Saturday and Sunday.
A few have return options worth knowing. The Alohilani Resort desk in Honolulu takes 24-hour returns through the valet. In San Francisco, the Fisherman's Wharf desk at 1365 Columbus Ave is 1.3 miles from the pier but open only 8 to 3 — and Sixt's page lists $99 to return to SFO if you miss that window.
Vancouver's 345 Robson St desk is the only brand page we found in Vancouver with cruise wording — transit directions from Canada Place. Match each desk's weekend hours to your disembarkation time before you book.

The fine print that bites on a cruise trip
The Sixt terms that matter on a cruise
Sixt's US terms are specific about money and strict about borders. The spouse rule and the late-return rule are where cruise couples get caught, so start with those two cards.
Partly confirmed
Spouse as a driver
9 states only
Sixt's US terms count a spouse as an authorized driver only in California, Illinois, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin. Anywhere else, Florida included, you add them and pay a daily fee — one with a daily cap but no published amount.
We found no return grace period in Sixt's US terms. Billing runs in 24-hour cycles, and Sixt adds a $20 fee if you're two or more hours late without telling them, on top of daily rates.
Without Sixt's toll product or your own transponder, Sixt charges a $15.99 admin fee per day you use a toll, up to $99 per rental, plus the tolls themselves. Pricing for the toll product itself varies by state.
Sixt says its US cars may never enter Mexico. Canada is round-trip only, not one-way, limited to British Columbia and Alberta from Washington, Oregon, California and four other western states, and a per-mile fee applies if you break the rule.
Sixt advertises no drop fee on select routes in Florida, California and Nevada; other one-ways vary, and airport-to-downtown in the same city isn't free. Its terms still allow a one-way charge, so read the quote line by line.
Park, lock, photograph the car and drop the key. Sixt says you stay responsible for damage or loss until it inspects the car, so take those photos before you leave for the airport.
Sixt rents to 21–24s at most US locations, with an underage fee shown at booking and cars limited to Economy through Full-size, mid-size SUVs and minivans. New York allows 18.
Flexi (pay-later) bookings cancel free up to pickup, though a no-show fee may apply. Prepaid ones cancel free only within 24 hours of booking, and only if pickup is still more than 48 hours away.
Comparison sites show the base rate. These are the add-ons Sixt publishes, so you can see the real total before you tap through — anything it doesn't publish shows at checkout, and we say so rather than guess.

Sixt's 5.7 for port access reflects ten near-port desks and no shuttle anywhere. Satisfaction lands at 6.4 on J.D. Power alone — the ACSI doesn't rate Sixt separately, and there's no second study to average in.
Family is the low bar at 4.5, driven by the nine-state spouse rule, and timing sits at 5.0 with no stated grace period. Fees reach 5.5 — the $99 toll cap is nearly three times Avis's $34.95, but your own transponder sidesteps it and pay-later bookings cancel free.
Across the 23 cruise ports we've researched, Sixt has a pier shuttle at 0, an office near the terminal at 10, airport counters only at 9, and a written statement that it offers no port pickup or shuttle at 0; 0 are unconfirmed and 4 show no presence. Shuttles score 10, near-port offices 6, airport-only or unconfirmed 3, a no-shuttle statement 1 and no presence 0; the average is scaled by 1.5 and capped at 10.
J.D. Power's 2026 North America Rental Car Satisfaction Study scored Sixt 714 out of 1,000 (study average 707); the ACSI doesn't score it separately. We convert each to a 0–10 scale and average what's available.
No drop fee on select Florida, California and Nevada routes, but Canada is round-trip only and US-to-Canada one-ways are banned.
Spouses count as authorized drivers in only nine states — not Florida.
No return grace period stated in its US terms, and a $20 fee if you're 2+ hours late without telling them.
$15.99 per toll day, capped at $99, but you may bring your own transponder; pay-later cancels free.

What renters say
What the 2026 surveys say about Sixt
Sixt took fifth of 13 brands in J.D. Power's 2026 study (released Oct 7, 2026; figures as reported by TravelPulse and Auto Rental News), scoring 714 out of 1,000 — seven points over the 707 average and ahead of Hertz, Avis and Budget.
The ACSI's 2026 travel study doesn't score Sixt on its own. J.D. Power polls airport renters, which matches Sixt's nine airport-only ports. Where Sixt meets you at a hotel-lobby desk instead, the score has no opinion — ask that desk how it handles a ship's worth of arrivals.

Side by side
Sixt against Hertz and Avis
Hertz and Avis also keep city desks near cruise terminals, so they're the fair comparison, not the airport-only brands. Avis has 15 near-port offices and three pier shuttles to Sixt's 10 and none; Hertz has 12 desks. Couples sailing from Seattle or Boston should read the Canada and extra-driver rows first.
Sixt makes sense when you're staying downtown before or after the cruise and the hotel has a Sixt desk in the lobby. Boston, Manhattan and Honolulu stand out because those desks take after-hours returns.
It makes less sense in Florida, where Sixt's only desk near a ship is in downtown Miami — and it won't treat your spouse as a driver without the daily fee.
If you do go with Sixt, pack your own transponder and photograph the car at drop-off. Call the desk the moment your ship runs late, because two unannounced hours cost $20 on top of the extra day.

No. We found no Sixt pier shuttle at any of the 23 ports we checked. The closest thing is Sixt ride, a separate chauffeured transfer service, which listed an MCO to Port Canaveral shared shuttle at $29.99 per person on October 21, 2026.
Can I rent from Sixt in Seattle and drop off in Vancouver?
No. Sixt bans one-way rentals from the US into Canada. A round trip is allowed, limited to British Columbia and Alberta when you rent in Washington. Breaking the rule triggers a per-mile fee.
Is my spouse covered on a Sixt rental in Florida?
Not automatically. Sixt's US terms treat a spouse as an authorized driver only in California, Illinois, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin. Add your spouse at the counter in Florida and expect a daily fee with a daily cap.
Can I use my own toll transponder in a Sixt car?
Yes. Sixt says you may use a personal transponder for the whole rental, and to keep the Sixt box closed in the Northeast. Without one or Sixt's toll product, you pay $15.99 per toll day, up to $99 per rental, plus the tolls.
How long will Sixt hold my car if my flight is late?
Sixt gives a 60-minute pickup grace if you didn't add a flight number, and holds the car 24 hours if you did. Add the flight when you book.
