San Juan Cruise Port Rental Car Guide

Neither of San Juan’s pier districts has a rental desk that we could find. What it does have is Charlie Car Rental, a local company in Condado that says it will shuttle you to or from the ship free of charge if you drop the car between 8 and 4. Every other desk we found leaves you with a taxi for the last couple of miles — and in the city itself, you may be better off with no car at all.

“Any one needing a shuttle to/from the cruise ship area can drop off the vehicle any day between 8am-4pm for shuttle service to/from the cruise ship areas. This service is free of charge.”

A local company rather than one of the big brands. About 2.2 miles from Pier 4 and 1.6 from the Pan American Pier, by our estimates. Its office list gives 874 Ashford and 8 to 5, so confirm the hours when you book.

The same shuttle runs from the ship to the office after the cruise.

Neither pier district has a rental office that we could find, and the port’s transportation page covers taxis, rideshare, buses and private transfers without a word about rental cars.

Charlie is the exception worth planning around.

It’s a local outfit rather than a big brand, its Condado office is about 2.2 miles from Pier 4, and its own FAQ promises a free shuttle to or from the cruise ship area for cars dropped between 8 and 4 — the only promise of its kind we found in San Juan.

The rest of Condado is ordinary rental territory, not cruise territory.

Avis at 1050 Ashford opens 8 to 4 (Sunday 8 to noon) and offers free pickup; Enterprise has desks at the Marriott, open 8 to 4 daily, and at the Caribe Hilton, closed Sundays; Hertz at the Palm Inn keeps 7 to 4 every day.

Not one of those pages mentions the cruise port. From any of them, it’s a taxi or an Uber for the last two or three miles, not a shuttle.

Which pier

Old city pier or Isla Grande

Old San Juan, Piers 3 and 4

  • On Calle La Marina, 500 meters from the city center by the port’s count
  • Charlie’s office is about 2.2 miles off, by our estimate
  • Old-city street parking is largely kept for residents with permits
  • The port points drivers to the public Covadonga lot, across from the piers
  • The forts are a 10- to 15-minute walk

Pan American Piers, Isla Grande

  • Across the bay, about 3 miles from the forts per the Park Service
  • Avis at the Sheraton, 0.9 miles away, is the nearest desk we found
  • Charlie is closer here, about 1.6 miles (our estimate)
  • For the forts, the Park Service says to take a taxi
  • Royal Caribbean and Norwegian board here, by their own pages

Your cruise documents say which one you’re sailing from — check before you pick a drop-off, because the two districts are about 2.7 miles apart by road, by our routing.

The shuttle window

4 PM, not 4:30

Choose your sail day and when you’ll pull in. The checker holds it against each desk’s posted hours in Puerto Rico time, and against Charlie’s shuttle cutoff.

Try a Sunday at 3:30, then at 4:30. Charlie’s location page keeps the counter open until 4:30 (its office list says 5), but the shuttle only takes cars dropped by 4, and the office shuts for lunch from noon to 1.

We’d aim for mid-morning, well clear of both.

Miss it and the Condado desks are winding down too — SJU becomes the fallback, where the Avis, Budget and Hertz counters run 24 hours, and a cab or Uber brings you back across town.

    On the road

Why won’t a SunPass work in Puerto Rico?

The island runs its own toll system, AutoExpreso, and the SunPass or E-ZPass on your keychain is no use to it.

Rental cars usually come with a tag already fitted, and the company bills you through its program.

From SJU to the piers you shouldn’t meet a plaza on the usual route along PR-26 — the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge, the tolled shortcut, costs $4 each way.

The El Yunque drive is where tolls start adding up. PR-66 passes the Carolina plaza ($1.70) and Río Grande ($1.10), and both charge in each direction, so there and back runs about $5.60 by our sum.

One thing to watch this fall: by local reporting, AutoExpreso brings back fines on Oct 1, 2026 — $15 for each under-funded crossing, unless you top up the balance within five days. The rental’s own tag program is the simple way around that, not a gamble on the balance.

    Our view

The city rewards walking; the island rewards a car

    What we’d do

SJU sits 15 to 20 minutes from the piers by the port’s count, and a cab costs less than a day’s rental before you’ve even returned the car. Outside the city, the math turns over — El Yunque, whose visitor center and corridor aren’t rideshare pickup points by the Forest Service’s account, the eastern beaches and the bio bay, the long drives south and west once you’re off the ship. If you rent around the sailing, drop at Charlie’s Condado office and let its shuttle do the last leg.

    A car makes sense if

    • El Yunque, Luquillo or Fajardo is on the list
    • You’re staying after the cruise to see the island
    • Three or more of you, against tours priced per head
    • You’re fine with the island’s roads and toll tags

    Leave it if

    • It’s SJU to the pier and nothing else
    • You’re sleeping in Old San Juan or Condado
    • Vieques or Culebra is the plan (the ferry won’t take a rental car)
    • The hotel wants $30 or more a night to park

Still deciding? Four questions will sort it out.

Against the other ways to do it

Our sketch, not a quote. We picked the $45 base rate ourselves; Discover Cars’ SJU page showed cars “from $22” a day when we looked, Sept 28, 2026, with a warning that US totals can miss a tax or surcharge. Put in your own quoted rate. No company publishes SJU’s airport fee — the 11% is our assumption from old invoices — and we leave out the few-dollar daily licence and excise lines that show up on invoices. IVU, per Hacienda, is the 11.5% tax, and Puerto Rico adds nothing like Florida’s daily surcharge. We assume 30 mpg and roughly $4.35 a gallon, DACO’s $1.13–$1.17 per liter (Sept 28, 2026) converted by us. Plaza prices are Metropistas’ 2026 rates; program fees come from each company’s Puerto Rico terms. Tolls: None on the usual route along PR-26. The Teodoro Moscoso Bridge, the tolled shortcut, is $4 each way. The zone-fare taxi comes from a widely republished table rather than the official tariff, which the airport posts only as a scanned image.

At our assumed $45 a day the car comes to about $57, for a ride the port puts at $24 to $30 — and the cab leaves you at the pier, not at a desk two miles away.

For the transfer on its own, pay the taxi, not the rental counter. Save the car for El Yunque, or for the week after you disembark.

Book Charlie direct, then compare the rest

If Charlie’s shuttle is the plan, reserve with Charlie for its Condado office — the promise lives on its own FAQ, not on a comparison site.

If you collect the car here, it’s an easy airport for it — the main desks are a short walk from baggage claim, with no train to ride.

Of the firms we checked, the off-airport ones put you on a shuttle — Sixt, Payless and Charlie.

A Condado pickup skips the airport fee. The hotel-district desks in Condado and Isla Grande aren’t airport locations, so the concession fee shouldn’t appear there — IVU does, wherever you rent. Discover Cars’ own help page warns that US prices don’t always include every tax, which is why “Rate Excludes” deserves a look before you compare.
      Children

Puerto Rico’s seat law runs to age 8

The island’s rule covers older children than Florida’s does. By statute it’s rear-facing below age 2, forward-facing from 2 to 4, then a booster from 4 to 8, until the child is 4 ft 9 in and 65 lb. Kids under 12 ride in the back — and breaking the rule costs $500, rental car or not.

Delta, American, JetBlue and Southwest check car seats free, by their own pages — so pack yours instead of renting one at the counter.

Enterprise’s US figures, for space: a midsize seats 5 with room for 3 bags, and the standard SUV fits 5 bags with the same 5 people.

The full-size SUV takes 7 people yet lists only 3 bags; the 7-passenger minivan manages 7 and 5. Island fleets may not match the mainland list — check the class on your quote.

      FAQ

Renting around a San Juan sailing

Is there a rental car office at the San Juan cruise port?

Not that we found, in either the Old San Juan or the Pan American pier district, and the port’s transportation page leaves rental cars out. The nearest desks are in Condado and at the Sheraton by the convention center, roughly 1 to 2.5 miles from the ships.

Does any rental company shuttle cruise passengers in San Juan?

Charlie Car Rental says so on its own FAQ: drop the car at its Condado office on Ashford Avenue between 8 AM and 4 PM and it runs you free to or from the cruise ship area. No big-brand desk we checked makes the same offer.

Should I rent a car from San Juan airport to the cruise port?

Not for the ride alone. The port quotes 15 to 20 minutes and $24 to $30 by taxi or rideshare, while a one-day rental with the airport fee and IVU comes to about $57 at a $45 daily rate we assumed, and it still has to be returned.

Does my SunPass work in Puerto Rico?

No. AutoExpreso collects the tolls here, not SunPass. A rental usually comes tagged, and the company recovers the tolls through its own program: The toll-program fee is $4.95 a day at Enterprise, Alamo or National when you use a toll, $6.95 at Avis or Budget.

What is the tax on a rental car in Puerto Rico?

IVU, at 11.5%. An airport pickup also carries a concession fee no company prints as a figure, and invoices show small daily licence and excise charges. Florida’s $2-a-day rental surcharge isn’t part of it.

Which pier is my San Juan cruise?

Check your cruise documents. Old San Juan’s Piers 3 and 4 are on Calle La Marina; the Pan American Piers sit across the bay on Isla Grande, and Royal Caribbean and Norwegian board there, according to their own pages.
