Most of the old city’s curbs belong to residents
Start with the street, because it settles most of this. A local guide says Old San Juan’s curbside spaces are for residents who hold permits, and the city’s traffic code does set aside residents’ parking, so a visitor’s car goes into a public garage — Doña Fela or Covadonga on Recinto Sur, La Puntilla, or Ballajá.
The old city sits right above Piers 3 and 4 — close enough that the forts make the rest of the case.
The Park Service reckons most of the Old San Juan piers are 10 to 15 minutes on foot from them. One $10 adult ticket covers El Morro and San Cristóbal both for 24 hours — free if you’re 15 or under.
Even Discover Puerto Rico, writing about El Morro, sends drivers to one of the nearby paid public garages and everyone else to the bus, a taxi or a rideshare.
Sailing in January? The SanSe festival closes much of the old city to visitors’ cars every year, and in 2026 it ran Jan 15–18.
We wouldn’t count on the free trolley. A local guide said in January 2026 that it wasn’t running, and the city’s free weekend shuttle ran only through the 2025 holiday season.
So plan on your own feet, not the trolley, and a taxi for the climb when you want one.
$20 to $36 a night, hotel by hotel
Every hotel here that publishes a rate charges one — and two more keep theirs off the site.
| Hotel | Neighborhood | What it charges to park |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel Rumbao (formerly Sheraton Old San Juan) | Old San Juan | Self-park $26 a day, valet $36 |
| Caribe Hilton | Puerta de Tierra | Self-park $25 a day, valet $32 |
| La Concha Resort | Condado | Self-park $20 a day, valet $30 |
| The Condado Plaza Hotel | Condado | Self-park $23 a day, valet $28, plus a daily resort charge |
| San Juan Marriott Resort | Condado | Self-park $20 a day, valet $25 |
| Fairmont El San Juan | Isla Verde | Self-park $27.85, valet $33.40, tax included |
| Embassy Suites San Juan | Isla Verde | Self-park $27.88 a day; no valet |
Parking rates from the hotels’ own websites, read Sept 28, 2026. The Condado Vanderbilt is valet only and doesn’t publish the price, and El Convento doesn’t publish a rate either. Checked Sept 28, 2026
The beach hotels in Condado and Isla Verde sit 2 to 7 miles from the piers, and the old-city ones a walk away. The parking bill lands in the same range either way.
Two nights at those rates comes to $40 to $72 — and that’s parking, before a single day of rental.
Look at the cheapest self-park on the list, $20 at La Concha or the Marriott. One night of it is the same money as the cab in from SJU on the republished zone table: $17 to Condado plus the $3 airport fee.
What do two Condado nights cost with the keys?
| Keeping a rental | Going without | |
|---|---|---|
| Arriving | Collect the car at SJU | $17 zone fare to Condado and the $3 airport fee, per the republished table |
| The two nights | Two rental days with IVU and the airport fee, plus $23 a night at the Condado Plaza’s self-park | On foot, then taxis and Uber when you need them |
| Sailing day | Hand the car back first: Charlie’s office for its free shuttle, or a Condado desk and then a taxi | A single taxi or Uber, 2 to 4 miles |
| For two of you | $159 | About $20 in from the airport, plus your rides |
Our assumed $45 base rate, an assumed 11% SJU fee, Puerto Rico’s 11.5% IVU, fuel for about 12 miles and the Condado Plaza’s published $23 self-park. The zone-fare table is a republished one, not the official tariff, and Uber doesn’t publish its fares. Illustrative
That’s about $159 for a car that mostly waits in a garage, not on the road, against about $20 to reach the hotel without one. It isn’t close.
Dinner, the forts and the ride to the pier would take a lot of taxis to close that gap. Run your own numbers below.
Put in your hotel’s rate and your taxi budget
It opens on two of you and two nights. Change the parking line to what your hotel charges, and type what you’d spend on taxis instead.
The rental, line by line
We assume $45 a day, and this is a sketch, not a quote. Discover Cars listed SJU rentals “from $22” on Sept 28, 2026 — and its help pages say a US price can arrive without some taxes and surcharges attached. Use the rate your quote gives you. No company publishes SJU’s airport fee, so the 11% is ours, taken from old invoices. The small daily licence and excise charges on those invoices aren’t counted. Tax is the 11.5% IVU, per Hacienda; Puerto Rico has no Florida-style daily surcharge. Fuel works out at 30 mpg and about $4.35 a gallon. That’s DACO’s $1.13–$1.17 per liter on Sept 28, 2026, converted by us. Toll math follows Metropistas’ 2026 table and what each rental company’s Puerto Rico toll terms say. Parking starts at the Condado Plaza’s $23 self-park and the no-car row at the zone fare to Condado. Swap in your hotel’s rate, and add the rides you’d take.
Pier 4, or across the bay at Isla Grande
Check the pier on your cruise documents before you plan the ride. San Juan has two pier districts, and the Old San Juan piers and the Pan American Pier on Isla Grande sit 2.7 miles apart by road.
From a hotel in the old city you may just walk down — depending on the pier. Hotel Rumbao, the former Sheraton, calls itself “steps from San Juan cruise piers 1-6.”
From Condado it’s about 4 miles to Pier 4, and from Isla Verde about 6, by our routing — a taxi fare, not a parking problem.
Discover Puerto Rico counts Uber as the island’s one major rideshare app, and says it’s common only in the San Juan area.
For this ride, that’s exactly where you are.
If the rainforest has you renting anyway
Pick the car up for El Yunque the day before, keep it overnight, and give it back the morning you sail.
Where you give it back is the part to plan.
Charlie Car Rental’s Condado office takes cars from 8 to 4, closed noon to 1, and its own FAQ says the shuttle to the cruise ship area is free.
It’s the one desk we found that puts that in writing — though its office list says 8 to 5, so check the hours with Charlie’s before you count on them.
Otherwise, Enterprise inside the Condado Plaza is open 8 to 5 every day.
Avis at the Sheraton sits 0.9 miles from the Pan American Pier — and both leave you a short taxi to the ship, desk by desk here.
- Collect at the airport
- Hand back at SJU or in Condado
- The fees show up before checkout
- Nothing to pay to cancel 48+ hours ahead
When a San Juan rental pays its way
For nights in the old city, Condado or Isla Verde, go without. A rental adds a garage bill and a morning errand before you board, for a city that’s a walk plus a few cab rides. Rent when the plan runs east to El Yunque and Luquillo, or your bed is out in Dorado.
Skip the car if
- You’re sleeping in Old San Juan, Condado or Isla Verde
- Walking and taxis cover the plan
- Your hotel charges to park, as all seven we priced do
- You land at SJU and board the next day
Rent if
- El Yunque or Luquillo is why you came early — that day, planned
- Your hotel is out east or in Dorado
- You’re five or more, and taxis would mean two cars
- You want several days on the island before the ship
The old city, the beach hotels and a car
Do I need a car in Old San Juan before my cruise?
Not for the old city. Most curbside spaces there are kept for permit holders who live inside the walls, a car otherwise means a paid public garage, and most of the cruise piers are 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the forts, according to the Park Service.
How much is hotel parking in Condado?
La Concha and the San Juan Marriott list self-park at $20 a day, the Condado Plaza $23 and the Caribe Hilton $25, with valet from $25 to $32 at those four. The Condado Vanderbilt is valet only and keeps its price off its site.
How do I get from a Condado hotel to the cruise ship?
Take a taxi or an Uber. By our routing Pier 4 is about 4 miles from Condado and the Pan American Pier a bit closer; the tourist taxis work on set zone fares, paid in cash, and Uber doesn’t publish its fares.
Is the Old San Juan trolley running?
We couldn’t confirm that it is. A local guide reported in January 2026 that the free trolley wasn’t running, and the city’s free weekend shuttle ran through the 2025 holiday season. Walk, or take a taxi.
