The port’s own ride list leaves out rental cars
San Juan Cruise Port’s transportation page walks you through taxis, rideshare, buses and private transfers from the airport. It doesn’t mention a rental car anywhere — and for sail day, that’s a fair omission.
The port puts Luis Muñoz Marín 15 to 20 minutes from the piers and the fare at around $24 to $30 by taxi or rideshare — a price for the ride, not for each person in it.
A one-day rental from SJU for the same trip lands near $57 by our math, once the 11% airport fee and Puerto Rico’s 11.5% IVU sit on an assumed $45 rate.
Old San Juan has no curb waiting for it, either: street parking there is largely kept for permit-holding residents, and visitors pay to park in the public garages.
The Park Service says most of the cruise piers are a 10- to 15-minute walk from the forts, which makes the old city a place to walk, not to park.
Take the cab in, and save the car for the day you leave the city.
$370 for four on a tour, about $86 by car
East of the city the math turns over, and the reason is a pickup rule.
El Portal and the recreation corridor, in the Forest Service’s words, aren’t pick-up points for rideshare apps — the Uber that drops you at the rainforest is no promise of one coming back.
A tour solves it, but it charges by the seat, not by the car — and a rental’s price doesn’t climb with every extra passenger.
| The plan | In a rental | Instead | Better bet |
|---|---|---|---|
| SJU to the ship | $57 | $24–$30 by taxi or rideshare, per the port | The cab |
| El Yunque for the day, two of you | $70 | $185 on Viator’s $92.55-a-person day tour | The car |
| El Yunque for the day, four of you | $86 | $370 on that same tour | The car, by a mile |
| Two nights in Condado before the ship | Hotel parking alone runs $20 to $36 a night | Cabs or Uber around town | No car |
The rentals are our sums, not quotes: an assumed $45 base rate ($60 for four, in a bigger car), SJU’s 11% airport fee or nothing at a Condado desk, the 11.5% IVU, fuel, and on the El Yunque rows the PR-66 tolls in both directions plus Enterprise’s $4.95 charge for each toll day. The tour is Viator’s “from” price, and El Portal’s $8 a person is owed in the car and may be extra on the tour too. Illustrative
Two of you save a little more than one tour seat’s price in the car. Four of you save roughly the price of three tour seats — and keep the afternoon at Luquillo if you want it.
Answer for the days around your sailing
In San Juan the rows about your days ashore carry the most weight — a sail-day arrival with nothing planned outside the city points straight at the cab.
Old San Juan, Condado, Fajardo, the ferry
| If your plan is… | Car? | The deciding fact |
|---|---|---|
| SJU to the ship on sail morning | No | Fifteen to 20 minutes by cab. Every ride from SJU. |
| A night in Old San Juan | No | The curbs are mostly for residents, and the forts are walkable. The night before. |
| A night in Condado or Isla Verde | Probably not | Hotels charge $20 to $36 a night to park. Hotel parking, side by side. |
| El Yunque and Luquillo | Yes | El Portal and the corridor aren’t rideshare pickup points. El Yunque and your cruise. |
| The bio bay at Fajardo | Yes, unless the tour drives you | Kayak tours go out after dark, an hour from San Juan. The bio bay. |
| Ponce, Rincón or a loop of the island | Yes | Hours at the wheel, and toll plazas along the way. Renting after the cruise. |
| Vieques or Culebra | Not for the crossing | The ferry won’t sell a vehicle ticket for a rental. The islands. |
Traveling with a child under 8?
Then pack the booster, because Puerto Rico’s rule runs to age 8. A child under 2 rides facing the rear, a 2- to 4-year-old in a forward-facing seat, and from 4 to 8 a booster until the child reaches 4 ft 9 in and 65 lb.
Anyone under 12 sits in the back — the fine for getting it wrong is $500.
American, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue each take a car seat as checked baggage at no charge, per their own pages, which makes the one from home the easy choice.
Book the car by bag count. Enterprise’s US listings give a midsize 5 seats and 3 bags and a standard SUV 5 of each; the full-size SUV holds 7 people but only 3 bags, where the 7-seat minivan manages 5. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Puerto Rico’s rental fleet usually runs smaller than the mainland’s, so confirm the actual model on your quote.
San Juan and a rental car: FAQ
Do I need a car for a San Juan cruise?
Not for the ship. The port puts SJU 15 to 20 minutes from the piers and around $24 to $30 by taxi or rideshare. A car makes sense once El Yunque, Luquillo, Fajardo or the far side of the island is part of the trip.
Is it cheaper to rent a car or take a tour to El Yunque?
With two or more people, the car usually wins. We estimate a day from a Condado desk, tolls and fuel in, at about $70 on an assumed $45 rate; the lowest-priced Viator day tour we found is $92.55 a person. El Portal’s $8 a person is due with the car and may be extra on a tour.
Do I need a car in Old San Juan?
No. Its street parking is largely reserved for residents with permits, visitors pay to park in public garages, and the Park Service says most cruise piers sit a 10- to 15-minute walk from the forts.
Can I take a rental car to Vieques or Culebra?
No. A vehicle ticket can’t be bought for a rental car, per the Puerto Rico Ferry. Leave the car on the main island, or hand it back, and cross by ferry or on Cape Air.
