Fly into SJU and take a taxi or an Uber. The port puts the ride at 15 to 20 minutes and around $24 to $30, and taxis take cash only, per Discover Puerto Rico.
Check which pier your line uses before you get in: Royal Caribbean and Norwegian board at the Pan American Piers on Isla Grande, per their own pages, and Old San Juan’s Piers 1, 3 and 4 are across the bay. Whichever you pick, land the day before if you can.
Take a taxi if
- You have cash and cruise luggage
- There are several of you, since the zone fare is per taxi
- You want the driver to know the piers
Take Uber or Lyft if
- You’d rather pay in the app
- You’re landing at Terminal A, or B and C, where SJU marks the pickups
- You want the fare before you ride

Two pier districts, across the bay
San Juan’s cruise piers sit in two districts, per the port: Old San Juan, with Piers 1, 3 and 4 on Calle Marina, and the Pan American Piers on Isla Grande, across San Juan Bay. Royal Caribbean gives Pan American Pier 2 as its address and Norwegian gives Pan American Pier 1 East, on their own pages.

What the taxi to the ship costs
Set how many of you are riding. The zone fare is per taxi, plus $1 a bag, so a bigger party splits it further.

One way, in US dollars, before tip and the $1-a-bag charge, from a fare table republished by sanjuanpuertorico.com, not the official tariff, which is a scan we couldn’t read. Zone 4 covers Old San Juan and “all cruise ship piers”; Zone 5 covers the Convention Center and Isla Grande, and the table doesn’t make clear which zone the Pan American Piers fall in. Add $1 from 10 PM to 6 AM. The port’s own figure is around $24 to $30.
Other ways in: Royal Caribbean sells transfers “at an additional fee” without a San Juan price, and Viator’s San Juan port transfers started at $14 when we checked.
Landing on sail day? Check your timing
No line we read publishes a San Juan flight rule, so the yardstick here is our rule of thumb, labelled as ours. The port says to arrive by the boarding time your line gives you, and Norwegian asks for 2 hours before embarkation, or 1 hour with online check-in.
- Taxi or rideshare, any lineNo cut-off of its own; the port puts SJU 15 to 20 minutes from the piers. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 4 hours before the ship leaves.—
Your cruise line’s check-in window, in your boarding documents, is the real deadline, and so is the terminal it names.

The morning you’re back
The port puts SJU 15 to 20 minutes from the piers. Put in your flight and this works out the ride, the wait and what to do with the bags.

Can you get to the ship without a car?
Not easily with cruise luggage. SJU lists AMA bus routes T5, D53 and E40 from three stops on the departures level, serving Isla Verde, Condado, Old San Juan and the Convention Center, but the port says service is limited, can take over an hour and isn’t recommended with luggage. A rider guide at trenurbanopuertorico.com says large bags aren’t allowed, and sources disagree on whether the fare is currently collected.
Bags: Bounce lists storage in Old San Juan from about $1.95 a day, and a spot on Paseo Covadonga, by the piers, from about $3.50 with limited hours. A 2023 Cruise Critic article says neither terminal stores luggage.
Flying in the day before
The day-before flight is the one move that takes a delay off sail day. It costs a hotel night. It buys you the morning.
None of our top twenty runs a free airport shuttle, so it’s a taxi or rideshare either way. Eight of them are in Old San Juan, above Piers 1, 3 and 4, and Hotel Rumbao, first on our list, is “directly across from cruise piers 1 through 6” in its words.

San Juan cruise airport FAQ
What is the closest airport to the San Juan cruise piers?
Luis Muñoz Marín International (SJU), in Carolina. The port puts it about 10 minutes from the Pan American Piers and about 15 from Piers 1–4 in Old San Juan, and its transport page says 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or rideshare.
How do I get from SJU to the cruise terminal?
By taxi or rideshare: the port says around $24 to $30. Taxis are regulated by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and take cash only, per Discover Puerto Rico, and SJU says Uber and Lyft are the island's only rideshare companies, with pickups at Terminal A and at columns 16 to 19 for Terminals B and C. Royal Caribbean sells transfers at an additional fee without printing a San Juan price, and Viator's San Juan port transfers started at $14 when we checked.
How much is a taxi from SJU to the cruise piers?
A fare table republished by sanjuanpuertorico.com lists $21 from the airport to Zone 4, Old San Juan and all cruise piers, and $17 to Zone 5, the Convention Center and Isla Grande, plus $1 a bag, a $3 airport fee and $1 late at night. The table doesn't make clear which zone the Pan American Piers fall in, and the airport's official tariff sheet is a scan we couldn't read, so confirm the fare before you get in. The port's own figure is around $24 to $30.
Can I take the bus to the cruise piers?
Not with cruise luggage. SJU lists AMA routes T5, D53 and E40 from the departures level, but the port says service is limited, can take over an hour and isn't recommended with luggage, and a rider guide says large bags aren't allowed. Sources disagree on whether the fare is currently collected.
How early should I land on sail day?
The port says to arrive by the boarding time your line gives you, and Norwegian asks you to be at the pier 2 hours before embarkation, or 1 hour with online check-in. No line we read sets a San Juan flight cut-off, so the day before is the calm plan.
Is there a lounge at SJU?
Priority Pass lists The Lounge San Juan in Terminals A, B and C, open 6 AM to 8 PM, and LoungePair sells the Escape Lounge in Terminal B, opposite Gate B2, at $50 for 3 hours.
Can I store my bags on the last day?
Bounce lists storage in Old San Juan from about $1.95 a day, and a spot on Paseo Covadonga, by the piers, from about $3.50 with limited hours. A 2023 Cruise Critic article says neither terminal stores luggage.
