The falls on the postcards are closed
If La Mina Falls is the reason you’re going, read this first.
In 2026 the Forest Service lists La Mina Trail and Big Tree Trail as closed, so the falls can’t be reached — and El Yunque Peak Trail stops at Los Picachos.
Getting in, on the other hand, is simple. “Currently, you don’t need a reservation to enter the PR-191 recreational corridor,” the Forest Service says; the timed-entry system is suspended, and entry is free, first come, first served.
The catch is parking.
There isn’t much of it, so the Forest Service manages how many cars get in — which rewards anyone on PR-191 early, not at lunchtime.
The corridor closes at 5 PM, and you’re asked to start heading out 15 minutes before. Plan the day backwards from it.
El Portal Rainforest Center charges $8 for ages 16 and up (15 and under are free) and opens 8 AM to 4 PM daily, closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and Three Kings Day.
For two or more, rent: about $70 for the day by our sums, against $185 for two tour seats, and the car lets you leave on your own schedule from a corridor that isn’t a rideshare pickup point. Go the day after the cruise if you can, the day before if you must — never on sail day.
$70 for the car, $185 for two tour seats
It opens on two people, one day and a Condado pickup. The tour rows charge per person, so change the head count first.
The rental, line by line
Our arithmetic, not a quote. The $45 a day is an assumption: on Sept 28, 2026 SJU rentals were “from $22” a day on Discover Cars, which notes that its US prices may not carry every tax or surcharge — so replace ours with your quote’s rate. Nobody publishes the SJU airport fee, and the 11% here is our read of old invoices; we leave out the few dollars a day of licence and excise charges they also show. The 11.5% is Puerto Rico’s IVU, Hacienda’s figure; unlike Florida, the island adds no per-day rental surcharge. Gas assumes 30 mpg at about $4.35 a gallon, our conversion of the $1.13–$1.17 a liter DACO reported on Sept 28, 2026. Tolls use Metropistas’ 2026 rates, and each toll program is that company’s own Puerto Rico terms. The default day runs from a Condado desk to El Portal and back, about 61 miles by our estimate, paying PR-66 both ways. El Portal’s $8 a person, ages 16 and up, is owed with the car and may be extra on a tour too.
For a couple, the day in a car from a Condado desk runs about $70 at our assumed rate, including Enterprise’s fee for the one toll day.
The Viator day tour we priced is $92.55 a head, so $185 for two. The car wins, and it waits at the trailhead.
Knock it down to one traveler and the gap nearly closes.
At that point the tour buys you a guide and nobody behind the wheel on PR-191’s curves, which is a fair trade, not a rip-off.
What if nobody wants to drive PR-191?
| Tour | Price |
|---|---|
| Carnival, El Yunque excursion | $89.99 an adult, $69.99 a child, 4 hours |
| Norwegian, El Yunque Rainforest Drive | from $139.99 an adult, $79 a child |
| Viator, half-day from San Juan | from $100 a person, about 5 hours, hotel pickup |
| Viator, day tour with transport | from $92.55 a person, about 8 hours |
Prices as each seller listed them on Sept 28, 2026; the cruise-line excursions run on port days, for that line’s own guests. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Every one of these prices is per seat. A rental costs the same with one person in it or four — that’s the whole comparison in a line.
Drive it yourself if
- You’re a party of two or more, and tours charge by the head
- You want to stop where you like on PR-191, then eat at the Luquillo kiosks
- You can be on the road early, while there’s still parking
- A winding mountain road doesn’t bother the driver
Book the tour if
- You’re traveling solo
- Nobody in the group wants PR-191’s curves
- You’d like a guide explaining what you’re looking at
- It’s a port day and you’d rather book through the ship
Go the day after the ship, or the day before it
The day after
- Ships dock in the morning, El Portal opens at 8 and the corridor closes at 5
- Charlie’s shuttle runs from the cruise ship area to its office
- Your flight is the only deadline
- SJU sits on the way back from the east
- Nothing hangs on reaching a pier in time
The day before
- The day before is fine; sail day isn’t
- San Juan is 45 minutes or more back
- Return the car next morning; Charlie’s shuttle takes cars dropped 8 to 4
- Check your line’s check-in time first
- Weekday traffic out of San Juan slows you down
Ship, car, forest, beach
Charlie’s shuttle takes you from the ship to its Condado office, or a taxi takes you to SJU. Be on PR-191 by 10, see El Portal and the roadside falls, eat at the Luquillo kiosks, then head back to San Juan or straight to a flight.
Airport car, forest, hotel
Fly in early and rent at SJU, spend the day at El Yunque and Luquillo, and sleep in San Juan. Hand the car back at Charlie’s office next morning between 8 and noon, then ride its shuttle to the ship.
Rainforest by day, bio bay after dark
Stay on the east coast, since Laguna Grande’s kayaks check in around sunset or later, about 40 miles from the piers. Drive back next morning — or carry on to the Ceiba ferry on foot.
A tour with the transport built in
The Viator El Yunque tours we priced start at $92.55 a person with transport, and the cruise lines sell El Yunque as a port-day excursion. It’s the easy choice for one and a costly one for four.
After the cruise, El Yunque is a free day with a car.
Before it, the same day has to end at a San Juan hotel, not at the pier — so plan it that way.
Pier 4, Isla Grande or SJU: the miles east
| Destination | From Pier 4, Old San Juan | From the Pan American Pier | From SJU |
|---|---|---|---|
| El Portal, El Yunque | 30 mi · 48 min | 29 mi · 45 min | 23 mi · 40 min |
| Luquillo Beach | 32 mi · 48 min | — | 24 mi · 40 min |
| Laguna Grande, Fajardo | 40 mi · 1 hr 05 min | — | 33 mi · 57 min |
| Ceiba ferry terminal | 46 mi · 1 hr 20 min | — | 39 mi · 1 hr 12 min |
Drive times are our OpenStreetMap estimates at empty-road speeds; weekday rush hours leaving San Juan add to them. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Of the three starting points, SJU is nearest to everything on the list — the piers trail it by several miles each time.
After the cruise, collecting the car at the airport isn’t a detour at all — it points you east.
Laguna Grande, by kayak and by dark
| Operator | Price, on its own site |
|---|---|
| Kayaking Puerto Rico | from $70 a person, 2 hours |
| Island Kayaking Adventure | from $65 a person, 1.5 hours |
| Eco Adventures | $63 a person |
From each operator’s booking page, Sept 28, 2026. Every one needs a reservation, and check-in times shift with the season. Checked Sept 28, 2026
You see Laguna Grande at night from a kayak, with a permitted operator you’ve booked ahead — nobody swims in it.
Next to the bay, the Las Cabezas de San Juan nature reserve is $15 an adult and books by phone.
Because the kayaks launch around sunset or later, this is the evening not to drive back to San Juan tired.
Stay out east, or pick a tour that brings you home.
Luquillo for lunch, and a ferry the car can’t board
Luquillo’s public beach, Balneario La Monserrate, is roughly as far from the piers as El Portal and sits right on PR-3. It’s the obvious lunch stop.
Parking there costs a few dollars — sources disagree, $3 to $5 — and off-season hours run Wednesday to Sunday into December. The kiosks line PR-3 next door.
Vieques and Culebra are a different story, and the car’s part in it ends at Ceiba.
An adult seat on the Puerto Rico Ferry costs $2 to Vieques or $2.25 to Culebra; book online and arrive an hour ahead with photo ID. The operator’s FAQ is blunt about the rest: “You may not purchase a vehicle ticket for a rental car.”
Local guides put the private lot near the Ceiba terminal at about $15 a day, and the terminal is about an hour and 20 minutes from the Old San Juan piers by our estimate.
Or skip the drive: Cape Air’s one-way fares start at $89 to Culebra and $99 to Vieques.
About $5.60 of PR-66, there and back
PR-66 has two plazas between San Juan and El Yunque, Carolina, at $1.70, and Río Grande, at $1.10. Both charge you again on the way home.
Metropistas now bills many plazas in both directions at roughly half the old one-way price, so figure about $5.60 for the day — our own sum, not a posted fare.
AutoExpreso’s fines for crossing short on balance return Oct 1, 2026, local reporting says — $15 a crossing, unless you top up within five days.
The rental’s tag and the company’s program handle the tolls. Let them.
| Toll program | What it costs | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise, Alamo, National TollPass | Tolls, plus $4.95 per toll-road day, topping out at $34.65 per rental (Puerto Rico is on Enterprise’s list) | terms |
| Avis or Budget e-Toll | Tolls, plus $6.95 for each day one gets used, topping out at $34.95 (both brands list the island) | terms |
| Charlie Car Rental | Either $14.99 a day, tolls and all, or $25 once plus your tolls; say no to both and you pay $35 plus tolls | terms |
| Hertz PlatePass | Covers AutoExpreso, but its last priced page is from 2016 — too old for us to quote | PlatePass |
Toll terms from each company’s Puerto Rico pages. A SunPass or E-ZPass from the mainland doesn’t talk to AutoExpreso. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Rainforest, ship and the ride between, planned together
Pick up at SJU and match the return to your sail time
Search with SJU as the pickup. After the cruise it’s already on the road east; before it, set the return at a Condado desk or back at SJU, and hold that desk’s hours up against your boarding time.
- Pick-up: SJU, across from arrivals
- Drop-off: SJU or Condado
- Fees itemized before checkout
- Free to cancel until two days before
El Yunque around a cruise: what people ask
Do I need a reservation for El Yunque in 2026?
Not right now. The Forest Service says no reservation is currently needed for the PR-191 recreational corridor, and entry is free, first come, first served. Parking is limited, so get there early, and plan to be out by the 5 PM close.
How far is El Yunque from the San Juan cruise port?
Pier 4 in Old San Juan to the El Portal visitor center is about 30 miles, roughly 48 minutes on empty roads (our route estimate). From SJU it’s about 23 miles.
Is La Mina Falls open?
No. La Mina Trail and Big Tree Trail are on the Forest Service’s closed list, so the falls can’t be reached, and El Yunque Peak Trail is open only as far as Los Picachos.
Can I take an Uber to El Yunque?
Getting dropped off is the easy part. The Forest Service says El Portal and the recreational corridor aren’t authorized rideshare pickup points, so the ride back is the problem — the main reason to rent a car or book a tour with transport.
Car or tour for El Yunque: which costs less?
For a pair or bigger, usually the car: about $70 for a day from a Condado desk at an assumed $45 a day, with tolls and fuel, against $92.55 a person for the lowest-priced Viator tour we found. Traveling alone, the tour is close.
Can I take a rental car on the ferry to Vieques or Culebra?
No — the ferry operator won’t sell rental cars a vehicle ticket. Park near the Ceiba terminal and board on foot, or fly with Cape Air.
