Five answers, and the page builds the whole thing: the hotel, the ride in, the ride to the ship, what happens to the car, what time to leave, and how you get home. Every figure is one the hotel, the port or the company publishes. Where nobody publishes a number, you’ll see that instead of a guess.

Getting There

From the airport to the hotel, then on to the ship

Pick how you’re arriving. The board counts what each hotel publishes, the table lights up that column, and the companies below run from the airport to the port.

The port puts SJU about 10 minutes from the Pan American Piers and about 15 from Piers 1–4, and around $24 to $30 by taxi or rideshare. Eight of the twenty are in Old San Juan itself, above the piers.

Taxi from SJU

SJU
About $24–$30, per the port

The port says the ride takes about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic, and costs around $24 to $30 by taxi or rideshare; its FAQ puts the Pan American Piers about 10 minutes from SJU and Piers 1–4 about 15. Per a fare table republished by sanjuanpuertorico.com, the airport's zone fare is $21 to Zone 4 (Old San Juan and "ALL Cruise Ship Piers") and $17 to Zone 5 (the Convention Center and Isla Grande), plus $1 a bag, a $3 airport fee and $1 late at night; the table doesn't make clear which zone the Pan American Piers fall in, and the airport's official tariff sheet is an image we couldn't read. Fares in the tourist zones are fixed and posted, and paid "cash only" to the driver, per Discover Puerto Rico; the stands are at Terminal A and Terminal B arrivals.

Uber and Lyft

SJU
In the app; about $24–$30, per the port

SJU says Uber and Lyft are the only rideshare companies in Puerto Rico, with pickups at Terminal A and at columns 16 to 19 for Terminals B and C. The port says they wait outside the cruise terminals too, and puts a taxi or rideshare from the airport at around $24 to $30.

AMA bus: T5, D53 or E40

SJU
$0.75, or free: sources disagree

SJU lists routes T5, D53 and E40 from three stops on the departures level, serving Isla Verde, Condado, Old San Juan and the Convention Center. The port says service is limited, can take over an hour and isn't recommended with luggage, and a rider guide at trenurbanopuertorico.com says AMA buses don't allow large luggage, only small carry-on bags. Sources disagree on the fare: Wikipedia gives $0.75 a ride, while that guide says fare collection has been suspended since March 2024.

Cruise-line transfers

SJU
Price at booking

Royal Caribbean says "all ports have transfer services to and from the airport at an additional fee", without a San Juan price on the page we read. We found no San Juan transfer price on any line's own pages.

Private and shared transfers, via Viator

SJU
From $14

Viator's San Juan port transfers category listed transfers starting at $14 in the search result we saw, with about 70 results; we didn't open individual listings.

Splurge
Want it nicer?

The splurge list, told straight

These twenty are ranked for an easy sail morning, not for the room. San Juan’s best-rated rooms are spread out: AAA’s two Five Diamonds, Dorado Beach and the Four Seasons, are out of town, and its two Four Diamonds, the Condado Vanderbilt and the Fairmont El San Juan, are in Condado and Isla Verde. Hotel El Convento, a 17th-century convent, makes our top twenty in Old San Juan.

How far each pick sits from the ship

San Juan’s cruise piers sit in two districts: Old San Juan’s Piers 1, 3 and 4, and the Pan American Piers on Isla Grande, across the bay. The bands measure from there: Old San Juan, Isla Grande and Puerta de Tierra, Condado and Miramar, Ocean Park, and Isla Verde by SJU.

Eight of the twenty are in Old San Juan, five on Isla Grande or Puerta de Tierra, four in Condado or Miramar, and three in Isla Verde by SJU. None in Ocean Park made the cut.

How We Score

The Night-Before Score, out of 100

Five things decide how easy the night before is, and each one is scored only from what the hotel publishes on its own site or its brand’s.

If a hotel doesn't say it, it scores zero there — not a guess, zero. Travel sites, tourism listings and review sites don't count, and when a hotel’s own pages contradict each other, we score the claim as unconfirmed and tell you. Each page lists exactly what we couldn't confirm.

30pts

Distance to the ship

By band, from the piers: Old San Juan 30; Isla Grande and Puerta de Tierra 25; Condado and Miramar 20; Ocean Park 15; Isla Verde by SJU 10.

25pts

Getting to the ship

Hotel-run shuttle, free or with a published price, 25. A ride only inside a package or offer 20. The hotel’s own ride with no published fare 15. The hotel says you can walk: across the street, a few blocks, or half a mile or less, 15. A ride the hotel arranges through someone else, or a shuttle company it names, 10. A shuttle that doesn’t name the terminal doesn’t count.

20pts

Parking while you sail

Published rate to leave the car 20, including a package with a published price. Offered, price unpublished 14.

10pts

Free breakfast

Sail mornings start early. A free breakfast on site scores 10, including one inside a mandatory nightly fee.

15pts

The evening before

On the beach 6, pool 3, food or a bar on site 3, a kitchen in the room 3. Three of the twenty say they’re on the water: Caribe Hilton, La Concha and Condado Ocean Club.

Ties are broken in order: the lower published parking rate, any stated way to the ship, free breakfast, parking on site, the closer stated mileage, the lower guest parking price, then the alphabet. That’s why, on 36, The Gallery Inn leads on its own parking, then Palacio Provincial, which gives a distance to the terminal, then El Convento. On 33, the Holiday Inn Express leads on free breakfast, then El Colonial and Villa Herencia, split on the alphabet. On 32, La Concha sits above Condado Ocean Club on its parking, and on 31 Aloft above the Sheraton on guest parking, $18 to $20. On 26, the Hampton and Embassy Suites win on free breakfast, and the DoubleTree takes the last place on Hilton’s 2 miles to the port.

What's left out is deliberate. Room rates change daily, so they aren't scored. Neither are guest-review scores — they measure a stay in general, not a sail morning.

The ranking tells you which hotel makes the morning easiest. Your dates and your budget decide the rest, so price your own night before you book the winner.

Parking Math

Where the car goes while you sail

There’s no parking at the terminals, per the port, and none of our twenty publishes a rate to leave the car while you cruise. The lot below is the cheapest daily figure we found; set your cruise length.

Cruise nights
People riding
Isla Grande airport lot, $8.56 a day per a local guide—

There’s no parking at either terminal district, per the port. This row is the Isla Grande airport’s long-term lot at $8.56 a day, the cheapest daily figure on a local parking guide, not the operator’s own rate; add a taxi to the pier. We count the day you park and the day you leave, which is our assumption. Old San Juan’s garages price by the hour, and Covadonga, the lot the port suggests, quotes cruisers by phone.

For the options in town, see San Juan cruise parking, compared.

Just Missed

Seventeen that just missed

We checked 44 hotels in Old San Juan, Isla Grande, Condado, Ocean Park and Isla Verde. These came closest, with their scores and the reason each fell short. The Condado Vanderbilt, the Fairmont El San Juan, O:LV Fifty Five, Dorado Beach and the Four Seasons are on the splurge list, with El Convento.

HotelScoreWhy it missed
O:live Boutique Hotel26Level with the DoubleTree on 26 and behind it on stated distance to the port, about 3 miles to 2; adults only, with an indoor plunge pool over the Condado lagoon, Bardot and $25 valet.
Courtyard by Marriott San Juan Miramar26An outdoor pool, two restaurants and $20 valet, and Marriott pitches it for a pre-cruise stay, but there's no free breakfast, no shuttle and no distance to the piers.
San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino26Marriott describes direct access to Condado Beach, a pool with a waterslide and seven restaurants, but doesn't call it beachfront on the pages we read, so the beach doesn't score; breakfast isn't stated.
The Condado Plaza Hotel26An outdoor pool with a bar and $23 self-parking, but breakfast is paid, Hilton lists beach access rather than a beachfront, and gives no distance to the piers.
AC Hotel San Juan Condado26A rooftop pool, Bar.C.lona Rooftop and $25 self-parking, 0.3 miles from Condado Beach, but no free breakfast and no distance to the piers.
Abitta Condado26An outdoor pool, El Condado Gastrobar and valet at $33.45 a night, but breakfast hours are listed only for weekends and there's no distance to the piers.
O:LV Fifty Five26Adults only, with a rooftop infinity pool, Dante and DRGN, but its site gives no parking rate, breakfast or distance to the piers. It's one of our splurge picks.
Condado Vanderbilt Hotel26AAA Four Diamond and Forbes Four-Star, with 1919, STK and pools, but its site gives no parking or distance to the piers, and a daily resort fee applies. It's one of our splurge picks.
San Juan Airport Hotel23Inside Terminal D at SJU, with breakfast included and a rooftop jacuzzi, but no pool, and nothing on getting to the piers or leaving a car.
Hotel Miramar23M Café & Bar and a rooftop terrace, but its site gives no parking, pool or distance to the piers; a park-and-sleep listing for it wouldn't open.
Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort22Beachfront on Isla Verde Beach, the former Courtyard, with six restaurants and a pool, but breakfast isn't free and the piers are a taxi ride away.
The Royal Sonesta San Juan22On Isla Verde Beach with a swim-up bar, the former InterContinental, but a 22% daily resort fee, no free breakfast and a taxi ride to the piers.
Fairmont El San Juan Hotel22AAA Four Diamond, on Isla Verde Beach with four pools, but a Resort Experience Fee and a taxi ride to the piers. It's one of our splurge picks.
Hilton Garden Inn San Juan Condado20Self-parking at $23 a day, but the Hilton page we read listed no breakfast, pool or restaurant.
Hyatt Centric San Juan Isla Verde16The former Verdanza, with $9 parking, free luggage storage and a pool, but breakfast depends on the rate and the beach club comes with a daily fee.
ESJ Azul16Studios to three-bedroom units with a pool and a café in Isla Verde, but its site gives no address, parking or check-in details.
TRYP by Wyndham Isla Verde16Mentions proximity to the cruise ship terminal without a distance; its own site calls it beachfront while Wyndham says walking distance, so the beach doesn't score.

FAQ

Pre-cruise hotel FAQ

What's the best hotel for the night before a San Juan cruise?

On our scoring it's Hotel Rumbao, the former Sheraton Old San Juan: it's "directly across from cruise piers 1 through 6" in its words. Casablanca, which puts the terminal 0.2 miles away, is second, and Hotel Milano, which calls the port "a short walk away", is third. All three are in Old San Juan.

Where does my San Juan cruise leave from?

San Juan has two cruise districts, per the port: Old San Juan, with Piers 1, 3 and 4 on Calle Marina, and the Pan American Piers on Isla Grande, across the bay. Royal Caribbean gives Pan American Pier 2 as its address and Norwegian gives Pan American Pier 1 East, on their own pages. Your cruise documents name your pier.

Can I walk to the cruise terminal from my hotel?

To Piers 1, 3 and 4, from Old San Juan: Hotel Rumbao, Casablanca and Hotel Milano say so. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian board at the Pan American Piers on Isla Grande, across the bay, per their own pages, and none of our twenty says you can walk there, so plan a taxi.

Should I stay in Old San Juan, Condado or by the airport?

In Old San Juan if your ship uses Piers 1–4. For the Pan American Piers, Isla Grande's hotels are closest by road. For a beach, Caribe Hilton in Puerta de Tierra and La Concha and Condado Ocean Club in Condado say they're on the water; none of our Isla Verde picks says so. None of our twenty runs a shuttle to the ship.

Can I leave my car while I cruise from San Juan?

Not at the terminals: "There is no parking within San Juan Cruise Port," per the port, which points to the Covadonga public lot across from the piers. None of our twenty publishes a rate to leave the car while you cruise. The cheapest daily figure we found is the Isla Grande airport's long-term lot, $8.56 a day on a local parking guide.

Which San Juan cruise hotels have a free airport shuttle?

None of our twenty runs a free one from SJU. Taxis are regulated by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and cash only, per Discover Puerto Rico; the port puts the ride at around $24 to $30, and Uber and Lyft pick up at SJU.

How do I get from SJU to the cruise terminal?

By taxi or rideshare, most simply: the port says 15 to 20 minutes and around $24 to $30. Taxis are regulated by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and take cash only, per Discover Puerto Rico, and Uber and Lyft pick up at SJU. A fare table republished by a local guide lists $21 to Old San Juan and all cruise piers and $17 to the Convention Center, plus $1 a bag and a $3 airport fee; we couldn't read the official tariff.

Which cruise lines sail from San Juan?

Royal Caribbean turns ships here all year, with three Vision-class ships per Caribbean Journal. Celebrity's Constellation sails from here too, Norwegian's Prima starts on Sunday, November 15, 2026, Crown Princess's homeport sailings start in early 2027, and Disney plans homeport sailings in winter 2027–28. Carnival's 2027 visits aren't homeport operations.

Do I need a passport to fly to San Juan for a cruise?

Not to enter Puerto Rico from the US: Royal Caribbean says US citizens don't need a passport for that. The cruise is your line's call, since the ship visits foreign ports; Royal Caribbean says most, but not all, of its US sailings accept a birth certificate.

Why don't you show room prices?

Hotel rates move every day and spike on busy sailing days, so any number we printed would be wrong by the time you read it. We rank on what doesn't change daily, like shuttles, parking policies and breakfast, and leave the live rate to the booking site for your exact date.
