San Juan spreads its best rooms out. AAA’s two Five Diamonds are out of town, in Dorado and Río Grande, and its Four Diamonds are in Condado and Isla Verde. By the piers, the pick is a 17th-century convent. Here’s what each trade costs you.
We looked for the nicest places to stay before a cruise from San Juan. One of the six also makes our top 20: El Convento, in Old San Juan. The rest are in Condado, Isla Verde or out of town, a taxi or a drive from the piers. Tap the night you’re after and the pick lights up.
Four are on AAA’s lists: Dorado Beach and the Four Seasons are Five Diamond, the Condado Vanderbilt and the Fairmont Four Diamond. Forbes rates Dorado Beach Five-Star and the Vanderbilt Four-Star. El Convento and O:LV aren’t on AAA’s lists, and we say so rather than stretch.

None of the six runs a shuttle. El Convento is in Old San Juan, by Piers 1, 3 and 4; from Condado and Isla Verde it’s a taxi, and Dorado Beach and the Four Seasons are a longer drive, west and east of the city.
Breakfast is mostly extra. The Condado Vanderbilt includes it only with its Bed And Breakfast offer, and El Convento pours complimentary coffee and tea until noon.
Fees add up: the Vanderbilt and the Fairmont both charge a daily fee without printing the amount on the pages we read, and the Fairmont’s parking is $27.85 self or $33.40 valet. None of the six says you can leave the car while you cruise.

Close to the ship, Hotel El Convento, a restored 17th-century convent in Old San Juan, ranks No. 9 in our top 20. By the ratings, the Condado Vanderbilt is AAA Four Diamond and Forbes Four-Star, in Condado, a cab from the piers.
Two, on AAA's list, and both are out of town: Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, west in Dorado, and the Four Seasons Puerto Rico, the former St. Regis Bahia Beach, east in Río Grande. None of the pages we read gives a distance to the cruise piers.

None of the six says so. The Fairmont El San Juan charges $27.85 to self-park and $33.40 for valet, taxes included, per its FAQ, and O:LV has valet at a rate it doesn't print. There's no parking at the cruise piers, per the port.
Not as a rule. The Condado Vanderbilt includes it only with its Bed And Breakfast offer, and El Convento serves complimentary coffee and tea from 7 AM to noon; the others don't say on the pages we read.
