Charlie’s shuttle runs 8 to 4; SJU never closes
Charlie Car Rental is the one company we found that says it comes for cruise passengers — a free shuttle from the cruise ship area to its Condado office, 8 AM to 4 PM. Everything else starts with a taxi. If that’s the plan, go all the way to SJU, where Avis, Budget and Hertz never close and the choice is widest.
Charlie Car Rental, Ave Ashford 872, Condado
- Free shuttle between the cruise ship area and the office, 8 AM–4 PM
- Office open 8 AM–4:30 PM, shut noon to 1; its office list says 874 Ashford and 8 to 5, so confirm
- About 2 miles from Pier 4, our estimate
- No airport concession fee
- A local company, with toll plans of its own
SJU, about 8 miles out
- A $24–$30 taxi or rideshare, per the port
- Avis, Budget and Hertz open around the clock; the big brands are across from arrivals
- Sixt and Payless off the airport, by shuttle
- A concession fee that no company publishes
- The airport you’ll probably fly home from
Charlie suits a morning off the ship between 8 and 4, with the car pointed east or south. It’s the one plan with no taxi in it, though the FAQ words that 8-to-4 window around drop-offs, so confirm a pickup time when you book.
SJU suits anyone who wants a particular big brand, or a car that goes back to the airport before the flight.
Getting there means a tourist taxi at set zone fares, cash only, or Uber. Discover Puerto Rico calls Uber the island’s only major rideshare company — and common only around San Juan.
East to the rainforest, west to Rincón
Three of these fit in an afternoon: Dorado, Guavate and El Yunque are all within about 30 miles of Pier 4, by our estimates.
Rincón is a different animal — over two hours out, so it’s a night away, not a day trip.
| Where | From Pier 4 | Before you go |
|---|---|---|
| El Yunque and Luquillo | 30 miles, about 48 min | No reservation needed for now; the corridor closes at 5. El Yunque around your cruise. |
| Guavate, Cayey | 29 miles | The lechoneras, the roast-pork stands along Route 184. On weekends, Discover Puerto Rico says to be there before noon. |
| Dorado | 20 miles | Ojo del Buey beach, 15 miles west of San Juan as Discover Puerto Rico counts it. Tolls run about $2 each way, our sum. |
| Cueva Ventana, Arecibo | 55 miles, about 1 hr 12 min | Guided only: a 90-minute walk at $29 an adult plus IVU, reserved ahead. Tolls to Arecibo come to about $5.80 each way, our sum. |
| Ponce | 73 miles, about 1 hr 38 min | South on PR-52, about $4.65 in tolls each way by our sum. The art museum is shut for now, as below. |
| Rincón | 93 miles, about 2 hr 16 min | West-coast surf town, with Steps Beach on PR-413. At two-plus hours each way, stay the night. |
Miles and times are our OpenStreetMap estimates with no traffic and no stops, and traffic leaving San Juan adds time; toll figures add up Metropistas’ 2026 plaza rates. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Ponce’s museum and the Camuy caves: both shut
Two of the island’s classic road-trip stops are closed as we write.
The Museo de Arte de Ponce is closed for a $30 million rebuild after the 2020 earthquakes, with no reopening date given.
Río Camuy Cave Park has been closed since 2023. The natural resources department has talked about a soft opening before the end of 2026 — without a date.
Look at both pages the week you sail, not the week you book. Either closure can empty a whole day of the plan.
The ferry won’t sell a ticket for a rental car
“You may not purchase a vehicle ticket for a rental car,” the Puerto Rico Ferry says. That settles it: the car stays on the main island.
Money isn’t the problem. An adult ticket from Ceiba is $2 to Vieques and $2.25 to Culebra, booked online, with an hour’s head start and photo ID.
Park it or give it back: the lot near the Ceiba terminal is private, about $15 a day according to local guides.
Or return the car and fly — Cape Air lists San Juan to Culebra from $89 and to Vieques from $99, one way.
Charlie adds one more reason: its own policy says its damage waivers don’t cover its cars on Vieques or Culebra.
What the airport adds
| Rental length | From a Condado desk | From SJU |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | $50 | $56 plus the $24–$30 taxi out there, per the port |
| 3 days | $151 | $167 plus the $24–$30 taxi out there, per the port |
| 5 days | $251 | $278 plus the $24–$30 taxi out there, per the port |
Assumes $45 a day, then adds company or airport fees and Puerto Rico’s 11.5% IVU, with an assumed 11% airport fee at SJU. Not counted: fuel, tolls, the toll plan, and the small daily licence charges that show up on invoices. Illustrative
On paper, it’s $50 against $56 for a day and $251 against $278 for five — and SJU still needs a taxi fare on top.
The bigger difference is the morning, not the rate: a shuttle that meets the ship, or a ride across town.
Five plazas to Ponce, two to El Yunque
| Heading to | Road | Each plaza, each direction (cars) |
|---|---|---|
| El Yunque, Fajardo, Ceiba | PR-66 | $1.70 at Carolina, $1.10 at Río Grande |
| Guavate, Ponce | PR-52 | $1.05 at Caguas Norte, $0.75 at Caguas Sur, $1.15 at Salinas, $0.70 at Juana Díaz, $1.00 at Ponce |
| Dorado, Arecibo, Rincón | PR-22 | $1.00 each at Hatillo, Vega Alta, Toa Baja and Buchanan; $1.40 each at Arecibo and Manatí |
| Around San Juan | PR-5 and PR-20 | $0.55 at Bayamón, $0.60 at Guaynabo |
| SJU, the shortcut | Teodoro Moscoso Bridge | $4.00 |
Rates are Metropistas’ 2026 figures, and many plazas now charge in both directions at about half the old one-way price, so a round trip costs about twice what a single plaza shows. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Rental cars usually come with an AutoExpreso tag. The company bills whatever you cross through its toll plan — so on a five-day road trip, the plan can cost more than the tolls themselves.
Enterprise, Alamo and National charge $4.95 on each day you use a toll road, $34.65 at most, plus the tolls (Enterprise lists Puerto Rico). Avis and Budget ask $6.95 a toll day and stop at $34.95, tolls extra (both list the island).
Charlie’s unlimited plan is $14.99 every day, used or not, tolls included. Or pay $25 once plus the tolls you use; skip both, and it’s $35 plus tolls (Charlie’s policies).
Hertz’s PlatePass covers AutoExpreso too. The only page we found with a price is from 2016, so we don’t quote one (PlatePass).
Your SunPass or E-ZPass stays in the drawer — Puerto Rico runs on AutoExpreso.
And Oct 1, 2026 brings back fines for crossing on too little balance, local reporting says: $15 each time, unless the balance is topped up within five days. The three plans compared, trip by trip.
Under 12 rides in the back here
Puerto Rico’s seat law is specific: under 2, a rear-facing seat, and from 2 to 4, forward-facing. Ages 4 to 8 ride in a booster until they reach 4 ft 9 in and 65 lb.
The back seat is the rule under 12, and the fine is $500 — rental or not.
Carry yours from home: American, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue all take a car seat as checked luggage for free.
Luggage decides the car more than seats do — Enterprise lists its standard SUV at 5 seats and 5 bags, against 3 bags in a midsize car with the same 5 seats.
The full-size SUV seats 7 but lists 3 bags, and the 7-passenger minivan lists 7 and 5.
Capacities are Enterprise’s US figures; the island fleet usually runs smaller, so look at the actual model on your quote before counting on that fifth bag. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Book the office, not just the brand
For Charlie’s shuttle, reserve its Condado office directly.
For everything else, search SJU and set the return to SJU if you’re flying out.
- Collect at: San Juan airport (SJU)
- Hand back at: SJU, on the way to your flight
- Taxes and fees on screen before payment
- No charge to cancel until 48 hours out

Off the ship in San Juan: your rental questions
Can I pick up a rental car at the San Juan cruise port after my cruise?
No — we found no rental desk in either pier district. Charlie Car Rental says its Condado office sends a free shuttle to and from the cruise ship area between 8 AM and 4 PM. Otherwise it’s a taxi or Uber, about 8 miles to SJU, where Avis, Budget and Hertz stay open 24 hours.
How far is Ponce from the San Juan cruise port?
By our route estimate, about 73 miles from Pier 4, an hour and 40 minutes with no traffic. Tolls on PR-52 add about $4.65 each way. The Museo de Arte de Ponce is closed for reconstruction.
Is Río Camuy Cave Park open?
Not when we checked. It closed in 2023, and while the natural resources department has talked about a soft opening before the end of 2026, it hasn’t named a date.
Can I take my rental car to Vieques or Culebra?
No. The Puerto Rico Ferry’s FAQ rules out vehicle tickets for rental cars, so park in Ceiba or hand the car back, then take the ferry ($2 to Vieques, $2.25 to Culebra) or fly.
