Four questions that settle the car for an Amsterdam sailing
The terminal, the days around it, the headcount and the driver’s nerve. Tap one answer per row.
The second row carries the most weight.
Amsterdam is a city you walk, cycle and tram through — and the PTA sits inside it.
A car starts to matter only when the plan leaves town, or when the ship does, from IJmuiden.
Big groups tip the answer too. Five people with cruise luggage don’t fit a tram the way two do — a van might.
The train, tram 26 and the walk from Centraal
Every row here gets you from Schiphol or Centraal to the ship without parking anything.
| Ride | Price, read Oct 3, 2026 | Note | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train, Schiphol to Centraal | €4.90 or about €5.50 a person | 8 an hour, 14–17 min | Two I amsterdam pages differ |
| Walk, Centraal to the PTA | Free | About 15 minutes, per the terminal | Terminal page |
| Tram 26, Centraal to Muziekgebouw / Bimhuis | Contactless; €10 daily cap | One stop, every few minutes by day | Terminal and GVB |
| Bus 397, Schiphol to the city | €6.50 single, €11.75 return | Every 10 min by day; not to the PTA | I amsterdam, July 2025 |
| Taxi, Schiphol to the PTA | Metered; about €45 per Holland America | Legal maximum about €84 on empty roads | Our arithmetic |
| Private transfer (Viator) | From $39; $83 from the port to Schiphol | Prices in US dollars, Oct 4 | Reseller listing |
| Your cruise line’s transfer | No price printed | Holland America: meet the rep by 1:30 PM | Line page |
From Schiphol, I amsterdam, the terminal, Holland America and Viator. Checked Oct 3, 2026
Schiphol says eight trains an hour reach Amsterdam Centraal in 14 to 17 minutes, from the station under Schiphol Plaza. I amsterdam prints €4.90 one way on one page (updated July 2025) and “approximately €5.50” on another; we couldn’t read NS’s own fare, so plan on €5 to €6 — €5.50 is about US$6.
You can tap in with a contactless bank card or phone, or buy a ticket at the machines by the baggage belts. No ticket queue if your card is contactless.
From Centraal the terminal is about 15 minutes on foot, by its own estimate — Celebrity says 10. Tram 26 does it in one stop.
Amsterdam’s trams are cashless, and GVB caps contactless travel at €10 a day. Bus 397, the Amsterdam Airport Express, runs every 10 minutes by day for €6.50 single, €11.75 return (I amsterdam, July 2025); it heads into the city, not to the PTA. It’s a slower way to the same station.
None of the lines whose pages we read prints a per-person Schiphol–PTA transfer price — Holland America’s transfer has a 1:30 PM meeting deadline, but no fare on the page.
For two people and two bags, train plus walk is the default. Rent only when the days around the cruise ask for it.
What a Schiphol taxi can legally charge you to the PTA
Dutch taxi fares have a legal ceiling, which lets you price the cab before you’re in it.
Dutch taxis run on a national maximum tariff, which for 2026 is €4.31 to start, €3.17 a kilometre and €0.52 a minute for a car of up to four passengers; a van carrying five to eight passengers may charge up to €8.77, €4.00 and €0.59.
Run our routing through it — about 21.0 km and 25 minutes from Schiphol to the PTA — and the ceiling for a car is near €84 (about US$95), our arithmetic on empty roads.
A van with five or more passengers aboard may charge up to about €107 (about US$120) on the same run. Traffic adds only the per-minute part, €0.52 a minute.
Schiphol publishes no fixed fare to the city or the PTA; you pay the meter, or a price agreed before the ride.
Holland America says about €45 from Schiphol, and that “Uber and Bolt are readily available”. I amsterdam (July 2025) says €35 to €55 from Schiphol to the centre, up to about €75 — every figure there sits under the PTA ceiling.
The terminal’s access page still carries a notice that the Piet Hein tunnel is closed “until the 2nd December 2022”, so we treat its taxi price guide as dated.
The official rank is in front of Schiphol Plaza, every taxi takes contactless cards, and Uber and Bolt have their own pick-up point.
If a driver offers a fixed price, check it against the ceiling before you get in.
Driving in the Netherlands on a US licence, and where an IDP comes in
Four official sources, and they don’t all read the same way.
The RDW, the Dutch vehicle authority, says a tourist “may drive in the Netherlands with your foreign driving licence”; it wants the categories on the licence to read A, B, C, D or E, and calls an international licence wise if yours use different designations. Check the class letters on your own licence against that list.
The State Department: “A valid U.S. driver’s license is valid for use in the Netherlands while in tourist or visitor status. An International Driving Permit is not required for short-term visitors.”.
The US Embassy in The Hague says a valid state licence, “preferably in combination with an International Driver’s License” from AAA.
A government.nl traffic guide reads more strictly: a Dutch, EU or international licence “accompanied by the original driver licence”. That last wording sits awkwardly beside the other three — it reads as a permit travelling with the licence, not replacing it.
So the official line is that a US licence is enough for a tourist. The Embassy still prefers a permit.
An IDP is cheap insurance against a counter clerk who reads the rules strictly — get one from AAA before you fly, not at Schiphol.
Speed limits, the diesel zone and cyclists’ right of way are on the IJmuiden drive page, where they bite.
The car you rent before the cruise keeps charging while you sail
Most of the cost of a pre-cruise rental lands while you’re at sea.
Rent at Schiphol on sailing day and keep it, and the car sits for the whole voyage.
At an assumed €40 (about US$45) a day, seven days is €280 in rent. Add Q-Park’s €120 Park+Cruise ticket for eight days, which is what a seven-night sailing spans, and it’s about €400 (about US$450) before fuel — our arithmetic.
Two train tickets from Schiphol cost less than a single day’s rent. That gap is the price of a car waiting at the end. Only a multi-day road trip afterwards justifies it.
If the road trip comes after, rent after. The disembark-day page covers which desk is open when you’re off the ship.
Euro-to-dollar figures on this page use the European Central Bank’s Oct 2, 2026 rate, about $1.12 — expect your card’s rate to differ a little.
If the answer is yes: booking an Amsterdam car
Search the city as a whole, then read the pick-up line on each result.
The station page listed Enterprise’s Oosterdok desk and Sixt on De Ruijterkade, from $25.43 a day on Oct 3 — dollars as a US visitor sees them.
Book for the days you’ll drive, not the days you’re in the Netherlands. Our Discover Cars review covers deposits and the coverage add-on.
- Pick the first day you’ll drive
- Prices shown in dollars to US visitors
- Fees shown before you pay

Cars and an Amsterdam cruise: what people ask
Do I need a car to get from Schiphol to the Amsterdam cruise terminal?
No. Trains run eight times an hour from Schiphol to Centraal in 14 to 17 minutes, and the terminal is about a 15-minute walk or one tram 26 stop from there.
How much is a taxi from Schiphol to the Amsterdam cruise port?
There’s no fixed fare. Holland America says about €45; the 2026 legal maximum on a 21 km, 25-minute run works out near €84 for a car, by our arithmetic.
Can Americans drive in the Netherlands with a US licence?
Yes, as tourists. The RDW and the State Department both accept a valid US licence; the US Embassy says preferably with an International Driver’s License from AAA.
Is driving in Amsterdam hard for visitors?
It’s slow more than hard. I amsterdam says 80% of the city’s roads are 30 km/h, and turning drivers must yield to cyclists and pedestrians going straight on.
How do I pay for the train from Schiphol?
Tap in with a contactless bank card or phone, or buy a ticket at the machines by the baggage belts. Amsterdam’s trams take no cash.
