One rental hall at Schiphol, with the trains underneath
Schiphol keeps the rental desks, the arrivals exits and the station in the same building.
Schiphol’s own page: “All cars can be picked up at the Car Rental and Service Desk. It’s located in Schiphol Plaza, the airport’s main foyer.”
Five brands are on the airport’s list — Avis Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt.
The airport prints hours for each, from a 6 AM start to an 11:30 PM close at Hertz.
Two brands print narrower hours on their own pages. Enterprise says 7 to 10, not 6 to 11, and Hertz shuts at 11.
Enterprise and Sixt both take keys back around the clock at Schiphol — a drop box, not a person. Every desk, with its phone, is on the desks page.
Schiphol says eight trains an hour reach Amsterdam Centraal in 14 to 17 minutes, from the station under Schiphol Plaza.
Thirteen miles into the city, and who says otherwise
Three published figures and our routing, all within a couple of miles of each other.
Our routing from the airport to Piet Heinkade is about 13.0 miles — 25 minutes with no traffic, which you won’t get at 8 AM.
Holland America puts Schiphol 15 miles (24 km) and about 30 minutes from the terminal; Royal Caribbean says about 13 miles, and the terminal says a twenty-minute drive.
Four sources, a two-mile spread. Plan on half an hour, more at rush hour.
The last stretch is city streets — I amsterdam says four in five of them are 30 km/h roads, with trams and bikes on every side.
The terminal lets drivers stop briefly in front of the main entrance to drop passengers; for pick-ups it says to park in a nearby garage and meet at the street-corner meeting point.
The garage under the terminal charges by the day, not by the voyage. The desks page prices a week there.
One run from Schiphol to the ship: a car against the train and the cab
Two of you, one day, collected in Schiphol Plaza. Change any box to your own quote.
The rental, line by line
Our sum in euros; the booking screen has the real one. The €40 day rate is our assumption, a touch under the $43 average Discover Cars showed for Schiphol on Oct 3, 2026 (dollars, as shown to US visitors). The airport box starts at 0% because no brand prints a Schiphol fee, and VAT is assumed to be inside the quote already. Fuel covers the 13-mile run to the PTA once you type a pump price a litre — we couldn’t read an official October figure. Leaving the car in town rather than back at Schiphol may cost a one-way fee that only shows at booking; that goes in the drop box. No child-seat price, no toll. Dollars at the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 rate.
At an assumed €40 (about US$45) a day, the rental alone is €40 — before fuel, which stays blank until you type a pump price.
Two train tickets at the higher of I amsterdam’s fares come to €11 (about US$12). The walk from Centraal is free.
A taxi sits between them: about €45 by Holland America’s figure, with a legal ceiling near €84 on empty roads, our arithmetic.
The car also has to go somewhere while you sail — a one-way return in town, or a garage billing by the day.
For two people heading straight to the ship, the train wins by a mile. The rides table has every option.
Rent at Schiphol for the road trip, not for the transfer.
Automatics, the airport premium and what Schiphol prices look like
The gearbox, a broker’s airport premium and the dollar prices US visitors see.
Sixt lists “Automatic car” as one of its Amsterdam rental categories; Discover Cars’ lowest Schiphol “from” offer was a Toyota Aygo X with the gearbox not stated.
Can’t drive a manual? Filter for an automatic when you search — not at the counter, where the choice is whatever’s left.
Discover Cars’ Amsterdam page says airport pick-ups “typically cost approximately 15% more than downtown locations”, blaming airport surcharges; that’s a broker’s average, and we found no brand that prints an airport fee amount for Schiphol.
So the airport box in the calculator starts at 0%, not 15%. If your quote itemises a location charge, type it in.
Discover Cars’ Schiphol page, read Oct 3, 2026 from the US, said from $28.78 a day (a Toyota Aygo X or similar from Keddy), averaging $43.
Read the gap between the “from” and the average as the real range — the headline is one small car, not yours.
Enterprise offers two fuel options: bring it back full or prepay a tank at pickup (our reader’s summary of its page). Fill it yourself unless you’re sure you’ll come back on fumes.
Age limits and deposits differ by brand — the desks page lists them. Read yours before you fly.
Collect at Schiphol, or ride in and collect by Centraal?
Both work. The hour your flight lands decides which.
Collect at Schiphol
- Desks open to 10 or 11 PM every day
- You drive off with the bags
- About 13.0 miles to the PTA, our routing
- Enterprise and Sixt take keys 24 hours
Ride in, collect by Centraal
- Train plus a short walk first
- About 0.8 to 1.5 road miles from desk to PTA
- Enterprise 8–6 daily; Sixt shuts at 4 at weekends
- Night returns in the Oosterdok garage
If the car is for days after the cruise, don’t collect it on the way in — it would only sit.
Ride to the ship by train and rent when you’re back. The after-the-cruise page covers that end. Our dollar conversions use the ECB reference rate for Oct 2, 2026 — about $1.12 to the euro. A card rate on the day won’t match it exactly.
Booking the car at Schiphol
Search with Schiphol as the pickup and your real drop-off, so any one-way fee shows in the total.
Landing late? Every brand on the airport’s list stays open to 10 PM or later. How Discover Cars handles deposits is in our review.
- From $28.78 a day on Oct 3, dollars as shown
- Filter for automatics
- Drop-off fee shown in the total
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
Schiphol rentals: questions
How far is Schiphol from the Amsterdam cruise terminal?
About 13.0 road miles (21.0 km), roughly 25 minutes without traffic, by our routing. Holland America says 15 miles and about 30 minutes.
Where are the car rental desks at Schiphol?
In Schiphol Plaza, the main foyer, at the shared Car Rental and Service Desk. Returns follow the “Car Rental Return” signs from the A4.
Are automatic rental cars available at Schiphol?
Sixt lists automatics as a category in Amsterdam, but supply isn’t guaranteed. Filter for an automatic when you book rather than asking at the desk.
Is there an airport fee on Schiphol car rentals?
We found no brand that prints one. Discover Cars says airport pickups run about 15% dearer than downtown on average, which is a broker’s estimate, not a fee.
Is a rental cheaper than the train from Schiphol to the cruise port?
No. Two train tickets are about €11 at the higher fare; an assumed €40 day of rental beats only the taxi, and the car still needs parking or a return.

Flying into Schiphol?
Send the flight and the ship’s name. An advisor sorts the arrival and the ride to the PTA, at no extra cost.
