Cruises From Amsterdam

Amsterdam has two cruise terminals, and they’re about 19.0 road miles apart. Passenger Terminal Amsterdam sits on the IJ, a walk from Centraal. The Felison terminal is out at IJmuiden on the North Sea, with no train station — check which one your booking names before you book anything else.

01

Amsterdam, as a place to start a cruise

Most Amsterdam departures leave from Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, which now calls itself Cruise Port Amsterdam. It sits on the IJ at Piet Heinkade 27, about a 15-minute walk east of Centraal, per the terminal. That keeps a city departure simple — train from Schiphol, walk to the ship.

The city wants fewer ships, though. Sea-cruise calls were capped at 100 a year from 2026, with one sea-cruise berth a day, per the city’s 2024 decision as reported by Maritime Executive. In January 2026 the city’s executive proposed ending sea cruises by 2035 rather than moving the terminal, per NL Times. The coalition agreement signed in June 2026 says it will close the PTA — with no date in the text. We found nothing that cancels a 2026 or 2027 departure.

Here for a port day, not a departure? That’s a different page: Amsterdam as a port of call covers the day ashore, and our Amsterdam shore excursions the tours. This guide is for sailing from here.

02

PTA or IJmuiden: the mistake that costs a taxi fare

Lines sell both terminals as “Amsterdam”. Turn up at the wrong one and you face about 39 minutes by road with no traffic. The meter may legally reach about €121 (about US$135) on that run, our arithmetic on the 2026 cap — a real fare, not a short hop.

Two more traps. An IJmuiden information site says a second, smaller Felison terminal sits near the DFDS ferry terminal. Very few ships use it, per the same site — your documents should say which. MSC’s “Rotterdam (Amsterdam)” is neither. It’s Rotterdam, at Wilhelminakade 699.

Cruise lines sailing from here

Deployments change every season — this roster is dated and sourced. Starts and ends come from the lines’ own pages — calendar visits are kept apart.

Current as of October 4, 2026

Checked against the lines’ own pages on October 3, 2026. Celebrity names “Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA)” on its port page and lists Celebrity Apex, Eclipse and Silhouette there, with sailings titled “7 Night Norwegian Fjords Cruise from Amsterdam” and “12 Night Best of Scandinavia Cruise from Amsterdam”. PTA’s own 2026 calendar has Celebrity Eclipse in 11 times between May 9 and August 26, 06:00 to 17:00. Viking sells “Viking Shores & Fjords” from Amsterdam to Bergen, and the reverse, from 2026 to 2029, without naming the ship or the berth. Regent’s Seven Seas Grandeur left “Amsterdam, Netherlands” for Lisbon on September 27, 2026, and Seven Seas Mariner ends a Copenhagen voyage at “Amsterdam (Ijmuiden)” on June 30, 2027. Silversea’s 2026 voyage titles run “from Ijmuiden (Amsterdam) to Southampton” and back, seen in search results. Holland America lists Cruise Port Amsterdam as a departure port, and its main Northern Europe homeport is Rotterdam. Resellers show Zuiderdam on 7-night Norwegian fjords round trips from Amsterdam in summer 2027; Holland America’s own page didn’t show those itineraries to our reader, so confirm the terminal on your documents.

Sources, read October 3, 2026: celebritycruises.com (port page; itinerary titles from search results), vikingcruises.com, rssc.com (two voyage pages), silversea.com (search results), hollandamerica.com, msccruisesusa.com and sea.cruiseportamsterdam.com (2026 cruise calendar). Resellers list Celebrity Eclipse leaving Amsterdam on about a dozen dates between May and September 1, 2027, from 7-night Norwegian fjords to 12-night Scandinavia and British Isles. The September 1 sailing ends elsewhere. Celebrity’s own page didn’t show dates to our reader, so confirm yours.

Here for a day, by the line’s own wordingWhat the page says
Norwegian“Ship will DOCK at this port” on both its Amsterdam and IJmuiden pages — a call, not a departure
Princess“Amsterdam (IJmuiden)”, on world-cruise segments; “the port location is subject to change”
SeabournAmsterdam as a UNESCO port of call for 2027; Seabourn Ovation is on PTA’s 2026 calendar at least four times
OceaniaOceania Vista on PTA’s calendar July 31, 2026; its 2027 “Charms of Northern Europe” calls here

PTA’s calendar also lists Holland America, MSC, Cunard, Virgin, TUI, P&O, Fred. Olsen, Hapag-Lloyd and Ponant ships in 2026, with only “Cruise call” as the type, so it doesn’t tell you who’s starting a cruise. At IJmuiden, an information site marks one upcoming visit, Renaissance on October 30, 2026, as a turnaround. The PTA’s 2027 calendar wouldn’t load for us.

Where you can go

Celebrity groups its Amsterdam sailings as Norwegian Fjords, Scandinavia, Iceland and Ireland, and the British Isles. The full port lists we could read are Viking’s and Regent’s. So the ten stops below come from those two itineraries — real voyages, not a pattern for every line.

Three have pages of their own: Flåm, Bergen and London (Tilbury). For the wider region, start with our Northern Europe cruise guide.

Check-in at PTA, step by step

The terminal sets out the order on its own check-in page. You drop your bags first, under the “Luggage Drop-off” signs, where porters in yellow cardigans wait at the entrance. Label them at home — you won’t see them again until you’re on board. Then you show a passport or ID card, go through security with bags, jackets and metal on the belt, and finish at the Marechaussee’s border control.

The time you can check in varies by ship, per the terminal, so the time on your line’s documents is the one to keep. Cars can stop briefly in front of the main entrance to let you out. Anyone collecting you later should park in a garage and meet at the meeting point on the street corner in front. Disembarkation comes in phases, and the terminal won’t estimate a time.

Inside there’s a taxi rank out front and lockers — 24 hours, €4 small and €6 large, per Holland America. One warning: the terminal’s accessibility page still carries a tunnel closure that ended in 2022, so treat its taxi price guide as dated.

At IJmuiden, the Felison terminal publishes a cruise calendar and takes ships up to 295 m. Holland America says it takes parking reservations online and has no luggage storage at the pier. We didn’t find a check-in page from the operator, whose home page blocked our reader. Confirm with your line — the documents name the terminal, the time and the drop-off.

06

Parking, briefly

Q-Park sells Park+Cruise at its Oostenburg garage, €75 for up to 5 days, €105 (about US$120) for 7 and €120 (about US$135) for 8, per Q-Park. A seven-night cruise spans eight calendar days and Q-Park doesn’t say how it counts them, so budget €120 and ask when you book. It’s about a 20-minute walk from PTA. The city’s Garage Piet Hein sits right under the terminal, and the terminal’s parking page lists it from about €322 (about US$360) for two weeks booked ahead. Turn up without a booking and you pay by the hour — up to €53.40 (about US$60) a day, per an aggregator. For IJmuiden, book the terminal’s own parking on the Felison reservation site and confirm the price when you do.

Getting here from Schiphol, Centraal or the coast

Schiphol is the only airport the lines and the terminal point you to. What happens after you land depends entirely on which terminal you’re sailing from.

FromTo PTATo the Felison terminal, IJmuiden
Schiphol (AMS)Train to Centraal, eight an hour, 14–17 minutes, per Schiphol; a taxi on the meter, about 13.0 road miles by our routing; Uber and Bolt from the app pick-up point.About 19.9 road miles (32.0 km) by our routing. Taxi, a booked transfer, or your line’s coach — Holland America sells Schiphol-to-IJmuiden transfers.
Amsterdam CentraalAbout a 15-minute walk, per the terminal (0.8 miles by our walking route), or one stop on tram 26 toward IJburg to Muziekgebouw / Bimhuis, every few minutes by day.About 18.4 road miles by our routing. Princess calls the run “a scenic 28-mile coach ride” — the scenery adds the miles.

The train is about €5 to €5.50 (about US$6) each way (about US$6), per I amsterdam, and tapped in with a contactless card or phone. NS and Schiphol don’t print the fare on the pages we read, so check the amount on the reader when you tap out. Taxis run on the meter under a national cap of €4.31 (about US$5) to start, €3.17 (about US$4) a kilometre and €0.52 (about US$0.58) a minute. That limits Schiphol to PTA to about €84 (about US$95), our arithmetic — Holland America estimates about €45 (about US$50). For IJmuiden without a car, an information site lists a direct bus from De Ruijterkade Oost by Centraal. It comes bundled with a canal cruise from €40 (about US$45), so confirm the details with the seller. Every route and fare is on Schiphol to the Amsterdam cruise port.

Renting a car? Not for a city-terminal sailing. Amsterdam’s P+R lots stop at 96 hours, and Q-Park’s Park+Cruise table prints €105 for 7 days and €120 (about US$135) for 8, so budget the 8 for a seven-night sailing. The night before, ranked: we’ve scored thirteen hotels for the night before an Amsterdam cruise, from the terminal’s own building to Schiphol and IJmuiden. None sells a ride to the ship or a park-and-cruise rate. Four worth knowing:

For a grander night, see the splurge list, from the canal belt to the Dam.

08

Spend the day before close to your terminal

For a PTA sailing, sleep in the city and treat the last day as a free one. The big museums sell timed tickets. The Rijksmuseum asks every visitor to book a start time. The Anne Frank House sells online only, and every Tuesday at 10 am it releases the tickets for six weeks later — book before you fly, not on the day. GVB’s ferries across the IJ from behind Centraal are free.

For an IJmuiden sailing, the city is still the fun part, but the morning drive isn’t. Sleep on the coast, or leave the city early with your bags in the car. Our Amsterdam shore excursions cover the tours if you’d rather be shown around.

Does my Amsterdam cruise leave from the city or from IJmuiden? Which cruise lines start cruises in Amsterdam? Is MSC's "Rotterdam (Amsterdam)" a cruise from Amsterdam? When does check-in open at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam?

Answers verified against current pricing and itineraries before you book.

10

Amsterdam departure FAQ

Does my Amsterdam cruise leave from the city or from IJmuiden?

Your booking decides, not the word “Amsterdam”. Celebrity names Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), and Holland America gives Piet Heinkade 27. Silversea, Princess and some Regent voyages say “Amsterdam (IJmuiden)” or “Ijmuiden (Amsterdam)” — the Felison Cruise Terminal, about 19.0 road miles from PTA by our routing.

Which cruise lines start cruises in Amsterdam?

Five, on their own pages and resellers read October 2026. Celebrity sells Eclipse sailings “from Amsterdam” to the Norwegian Fjords and Scandinavia. Viking runs Amsterdam to Bergen. Regent sailed from PTA in September 2026 and ends a 2027 voyage at IJmuiden, and Silversea starts voyages at IJmuiden. Holland America lists PTA as a departure port, and resellers show Zuiderdam on 7-night Norwegian fjords round trips from Amsterdam in summer 2027. Its own page didn't load itineraries for us, so confirm the terminal on your documents.

Is MSC's "Rotterdam (Amsterdam)" a cruise from Amsterdam?

No. MSC sells Rotterdam under that name, and its terminal is Wilhelminakade 699 in Rotterdam. Book your night before there, not in Amsterdam.

When does check-in open at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam?

The terminal says the time varies by ship, so go by the time your line gives you. Check-in starts at the luggage drop. Then you show a passport, go through security and finish at Dutch border control.

Can I store bags at the cruise terminal before I board?

At PTA, Holland America lists 24-hour lockers at €4 small and €6 large, and they take only €1 and €2 coins. At IJmuiden it says there's no luggage storage at the pier.

Is Amsterdam closing its cruise terminal?

Not yet, and no date is agreed. Sea-cruise calls are capped at 100 a year from 2026. The coalition agreement of June 2026 says it will close the PTA, without a date. The 2035 figure comes from a January 2026 proposal.
