Half-timber below, castle above
A Moselle cruise day inCochem
The castle on the hill is the picture on the brochure, and it's a climb, not a ride. Almost everything else in Cochem sits along the flat riverfront below it.

The call
The Moselle's set-piece stop
On a Rhine & Moselle itinerary, this is the castle day. AmaWaterways lists 'Moselle and Cochem' as day 5 of Rhine & Moselle Fairytales; Viking's Christmas Rhine & Moselle, Avalon, Tauck and Riverside all call.
The included choice is normally a town walk, the Reichsburg or both. Tauck adds the Schlagkamp Wine Museum. Plan on a half day to a full one.
No line names the Cochem berth. It hardly matters — the town is small, and the half-timbered old town is on the river. The castle is the only part that needs effort.
Bernkastel-Kues usually follows a day or two later on the same cruise. AmaWaterways does Cochem on day 5 and Bernkastel on day 7, so save the wine-town afternoon for there.
From the ship: The riverside old town is flat and short; the Reichsburg is a steep 15–30 minute walk up depending on where you start, with plenty of stairs inside, and the May–October shuttle bus saves the climb.
In town
Castle, lanes and one odd bunker
Reichsburg Cochem
Louis XIV's troops burned it in 1689, and it was rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style in the 1870s. You see the interior only on a 40-minute guided tour. German tours run often; English ones less so, so ask at the gate first.
SourceGetting up there
The castle puts it at about 15 minutes uphill from Endertplatz, where coaches set down. From the centre via the steep Schlossstrasse it's closer to 30. There's no driving to the top — the seasonal shuttle bus is the only ride.
SourceThe chairlift to the Pinnerkreuz
It goes to a different hill. The Sesselbahn rises to the Pinnerkreuz viewpoint with panoramic views over the Moselle valley — a lookout, not a way into the castle.
SourceThe old town
Half-timbered houses, the crooked house on Herrenstrasse and St. Martin's Church, all a short walk below the castle.
SourceThe Cold War bunker
A former Bundesbank bunker, open to visitors. The odd one out on a castle-and-wine day, and the better for it.

Beyond the town
With the rest of the day
A castle, boat and wine day
Viator sells a 6¼-hour private day — the Reichsburg, a round-trip Moselle boat ride and a tasting — from about $86, as published 21 Oct 2026. Long for a port call. Check your all-aboard first.
SourceA one-hour panorama cruise
Listed by Viator under Koblenz. Only worth it if your ship arrives after dark, since you've sailed this stretch already.
SourceBernkastel-Kues, on its own day
Billed as the Moselle's wine capital, with a medieval Marktplatz and a 1608 town hall. Avalon's stop there adds a guided walk, a tasting and a castle visit — a separate call, not a trip from Cochem.

Riesling, close to the river
Moselle Riesling in town
Growers pour in the town centre itself. The Moselwein-Express runs out into the vineyards if you want the slopes as well as the glass.
SourceThe Schlagkamp Wine Museum
Tauck builds a visit into its Cochem day. On another line, ask whether it's on the day's menu.
SourceLunch at the castle tavern
The Reichsburg's tavern serves local food on a terrace over the river. A reasonable reward for the climb.

Who calls at Cochem
From the lines’ published itineraries, October 2026. Each name opens our review of the line.
When
Moselle ships call roughly March to November, and Viking's Christmas Rhine & Moselle brings Cochem into December. The castle shuttle stops at the end of October, so a winter call means walking up. Check the castle's winter tour times locally before you start the climb.

Quick answers
Cochem on a river cruise: questions
Is there a cable car up to Reichsburg Castle?
No. You walk — about 15 minutes from Endertplatz, or about 30 from the centre on the steep Schlossstrasse — or take the shuttle bus between May and the end of October. The chairlift in town goes to the Pinnerkreuz viewpoint on another hill.
Can I tour the castle on my own?
Not the interior. It's guided-only, about 40 minutes, and English tours run less often than German ones. Viator lists adult admission at €10, half price for ages 6 to 17.
Is the Reichsburg suitable for limited mobility?
Not well. Viator notes many stairs and no disabled access, and the approach is steep. The riverside old town and a wine tasting make the better day.
What are the castle's winter hours?
We can't confirm them, so check with the castle or your cruise manager. What's certain is that the shuttle stops after October, so on a December call you'd walk.
