A Main river start

Boarding on the Main inFrankfurt

Frankfurt is a winter embarkation city. Most departures that begin here are pre-Christmas sailings, the airport is minutes away, and the ship waits on the Main, not the Rhine.

In short

The short version

Uniworld is the one line that publishes a Frankfurt berth, on the north-bank Main embankment in the centre. Riverside starts Christmas sailings here on Riverside Debussy but names no berth.

German-market lines start here too — VIVA Cruises, Phoenix, nicko, Plantours and Amadeus among them.

The airport is close. The S8 and S9 reach the Hauptbahnhof in minutes, and a metered taxi takes 15 to 30. No river line publishes Frankfurt transfer terms beyond its general policy, so plan to make your own way.

With a 9:00 pm all-aboard, one night covers the Römerberg and, in season, the market. Add a second for Heidelberg.

The berths

Where the ships wait

Only one line puts a Frankfurt address in print. For everyone else, ask before you book a hotel.

Untermainkai 34 (Uniworld, berths LP2 and LP5)

Uniworld's port page lists Untermainkai 34, 60311 Frankfurt am Main, for its Frankfurt departures — LP5 on 25 November and 9 December 2026, LP2 on 15 December. Untermainkai is the north-bank embankment on the city-centre side of the Main.

Riverside, and the German-market lines

Riverside embarks Riverside Debussy here on several Christmas sailings but gives no berth on its routes page, referring questions to its reservations team. VIVA Cruises, Phoenix, nicko, Plantours and Amadeus ships also start or end in Frankfurt without a published quay.

Uniworld changes the numbered berth by date. Treat it as variable, even on a line that prints one. It also carries a low-water alert for parts of the Rhine and Main this season.

Getting there

From FRA to the Main

Frankfurt Airport is close enough that the transfer barely needs planning. The real question is how much winter luggage you're moving.

Fly into

Frankfurt Airport FRA

European Traveler, updated February 2025, describes the airport as 'only minutes to the west' of the city.

  • Train

S8 or S9 to the Hauptbahnhof

From the airport's Regionalbahnhof, the S8 and S9 reach Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof in 'around ten minutes', up to four trains an hour. A single was €4.65 in early 2025, tariff code 5090 at the machines — check the current fare on the day.

  • Taxi

    On the meter

Around €25 on the meter, 15 to 30 minutes to the centre. At rush hour a fixed rate of about €30 can be agreed for downtown hotels.

  • Line transfer

    None published for Frankfurt

Neither Riverside nor Uniworld publishes Frankfurt airport transfer terms beyond its general policies. With the S-Bahn this quick, a self-arranged taxi is a low-risk fallback.

The day before

The afternoon before

Frankfurt's old centre is small and sits just above the river. A walk, a short cruise and an apple-wine evening fill the day without a timetable.

    Römerberg and the Old Town

The Römerberg square is the heart of the Old Town and the opening site of the Christmas market. Viator's best-reviewed Frankfurt Highlights English Walking Tour covers it in two to three hours, from $34 as published 21 Oct 2026.

    An hour on the Main

Viator lists a 'Frankfurt Highlights 1-Hour Sightseeing Cruise' in its under-$25 band. The skyline and the embankment from the water — a preview of your own departure.

    Apfelwein in Sachsenhausen

Sachsenhausen, across the Main, is Frankfurt's apple-wine quarter. If you'd rather be led there, Viator's bike tour past the skyline and the Goethe sites ends with a glass.

A slow afternoon at The Florentin

The former Villa Kennedy has reopened as The Florentin by Althoff Collection — 147 rooms around a garden courtyard it calls 'the lush, blooming centrepiece of our hotel'. It's in the Michelin Guide's hotel selection.

The Christmas market, for late-season sailings

The market spreads across Römerberg, Paulsplatz, Mainkai, Hauptwache, Roßmarkt and Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz, Monday to Saturday 10:00–21:00 and Sunday 11:00–21:00, opening at 17:00 on the first evening. It overlaps every Riverside Frankfurt departure. Confirm the hours with Frankfurt Tourismus before you go.

Book Heidelberg ahead, if you have a spare day

Viator's Heidelberg Castle and City Day Tour from Frankfurt runs 5.5 hours from $143, as published 21 Oct 2026. Its 8-hour Rhine Valley trip with a river cruise is $170 — skip that one if your ship sails the Middle Rhine anyway.

Where to stay

Six hotels, one river

Our Frankfurt pre-cruise hotel hub has six picks, from the garden calm of The Florentin to the Steigenberger Icon Frankfurter Hof, receiving guests since 1876. The Lindner Main Plaza is the one on the river.

Altstadt and Innenstadt (Römerberg to the river)

Walking distance to Uniworld's embankment and the market squares. The right base for a single night.

Bahnhofsviertel, by the Hauptbahnhof

The S-Bahn lands you here, so it's the easy base for a late arrival. Le Méridien is about 200 m from the main station, and Roomers is on Gutleutstrasse.

Sachsenhausen (south bank)

The apple-wine taverns, and the calmer side of the river. The Florentin is here on Paul-Ehrlich-Strasse, and the Lindner Main Plaza stands on the embankment with the skyline across the water.

Quick answers

Frankfurt am Main river cruise questions

Where does my ship board in Frankfurt?

On Uniworld, at Untermainkai 34 on the Main, with the numbered berth (LP2 or LP5) set by date. Riverside doesn't publish its berth, so ask its reservations team before you book a hotel.

S-Bahn or taxi from the airport?

Either works. The S-Bahn is cheaper and quick to the Hauptbahnhof, but a taxi goes door to door. With December luggage, it's the one we'd take.

Which lines start river cruises in Frankfurt?

Of the lines we cover, Riverside — on Riverside Debussy, with Christmas sailings to Düsseldorf, Basel and Amsterdam — and Uniworld, on late-2026 dates. Viking's Grand European Tour sails the Main without starting here.

Is one night in Frankfurt enough?

For the Old Town and the market, yes: the all-aboard is in the evening and the airport is close. Add a night if Heidelberg is on the list.

Are the 2026 market dates final?

Not officially. They come from a festival listing rather than the city, so treat them as provisional until Frankfurt Tourismus confirms them.
