A ride in, then on foot
A river cruise day inStrasbourg
The ship berths in the port, not the old town. About ten minutes later you're on the Grande Île, and from there everything worth the day is flat, close and walkable.
- 466 ftcathedral spire, finished 1439
- 12:30the astronomical clock's apostles
- About 10 minport berths to the centre
- 27 Nov2026 Christkindelsmärik opens
The call
A full day, starting with a ride
Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Tauck and Riverside all call, and most give it a full day. AmaWaterways lists a 'Full Day in Strasbourg'; Viking makes it day 6, with the cathedral and Alsatian food.
The Port of Strasbourg runs two river-cruise sites east of the centre. Quai des Belges has 110 m berths, five minutes on foot from the Place d'Islande tram stop. Rue de la Minoterie has 135 m berths, about 900 m from a tram and 650 m from bus 2 — and direct access without passing the locks.
Some ships tie up across the river at Kehl, in Germany. Lines don't say which side they use, so ask yours. Either way, the included tour starts with a coach into town, then a guided walk through the Grande Île and Petite France.
The afternoon is yours. The shuttle timetable, not the clock on the cathedral, decides how long you stay.
From the ship: Not from the berth — it's a coach or tram ride in, about 10 minutes by the port's count — but the Grande Île, the cathedral and Petite France are flat and compact once you're there.
In town
The Grande Île in a day
The cathedral
Its spire was finished in 1439 and was the tallest in Western Europe until the 19th century. Avalon's included visit is a cathedral tour with a local expert.
SourceThe platform climb
332 steps to the viewing platform, last climb 45 minutes before closing. The city's 2020 guide gave hours of 9:30–20:00 April to September and 10:00–18:00 October to March. Check this year's hours and price at the door.
SourceThe astronomical clock
The twelve apostles process at 12:30, after a film at noon, every day except Sundays and public holidays. Tickets go on sale that day only. If your walking tour runs past midday, peel off early.
SourcePetite France
The old quarter of tanners, millers and fishermen — 16th- and 17th-century half-timbered houses under steep roofs. Scenic singles it out on its Rhine page.
SourceThe Covered Bridges and the Vauban Dam
Four 14th-century towers stand over the Ponts Couverts. Just beyond them, the dam's panoramic terrace is free.

From the Palais Rohan landing by the cathedral, on 45- or 70-minute routes with commentary in 12 languages. It runs all year, except in high water.

Beyond the town
Leaving the city
The Alsace wine route
Viator sells half-days out to the Alsace vineyards. On a full-day call it's the one excursion that earns the time away from the old town.
SourceFreiburg and the Black Forest — next day
On AmaWaterways' Rhine & Moselle Fairytales these belong to the following day's Breisach call, with Freiburg, a Kaiserstuhl hike and a winery tasting. Don't spend Strasbourg on them.

Things to do in Strasbourg
Strasbourg's included tour covers the outline. These fill in the parts it skips.
- Cathedral and old-town guided walkTime it so you're inside for the 12:30 clock — the bit a coach-and-walk tour tends to miss.
- Alsace wine route half-dayThe case for leaving the city on a full-day call, if your line doesn't sell one.
- Christmas market food walkOn a late-November or December sailing, a guide gets you through all eight markets in a few hours.

When
Rhine ships call roughly March to December. The 2026 Christkindelsmärik opens Friday 27 November with eight markets in the historic centre, according to the city's official market site, as reported by Oniva; the closing date wasn't out by mid-October, and last year's edition ended on 24 December. Avoid a Sunday if you want the clock, and remember Batorama stops in high water.

Quick answers
Strasbourg on a river cruise: questions
Will my ship dock in Strasbourg or in Kehl?
It can be either. Strasbourg's own berths are at Quai des Belges and Rue de la Minoterie in the port, about ten minutes from the centre; some ships use Kehl, across the Rhine in Germany. Lines don't publish which, so ask yours — the coach in is usually included.
When does the 2026 Christmas market run?
It opens on Friday 27 November 2026. The closing date hasn't been announced; in 2025 it ended on 24 December. Chalet hours of 11:30–21:00 have been published before, but the city hasn't confirmed them for 2026.
Can I see the astronomical clock on a port day?
Yes, unless it's a Sunday or a public holiday. The procession runs at 12:30, with a film from noon, and tickets are sold the same day only — so get there before your group breaks for lunch.
Is the cathedral platform worth the climb?
If you have an hour. It's 332 steps up, and the last climb is 45 minutes before closing. From the top you're looking down on the Grande Île you've just walked.
