Three rivers, one city

A wine week on the tide Bordeaux

A Bordeaux cruise never travels far. It leaves the city and comes back to it a week later, and in between the three rivers deliver the wine villages one by one.

Bordeaux is a week of short hops — Libourne, Blaye, Pauillac, Cadillac — with the tide, not drought, setting the terms.
Seabound Journeys on the Gironde

Overview

A wine cruise, first and last

The ports read like a wine list — Saint-Émilion, Pauillac, Blaye, Bourg, Sauternes. Nearly every day is built around a tasting, a château or both.

Sailing is the smaller part. Viking puts Blaye and Pauillac on the same day, and pairs several of its port days with a scenic sail on the Dordogne or the Garonne.

The water behaves differently here. These are tidal rivers, and at the top of the route the tide decides whether the ship reaches Cadillac.

Five of the lines we review sail it, all on round trips of about eight days. Tauck is the exception — it does Bordeaux from a hotel, then puts you on the Seine.

The stretches below fan out from the city, one river at a time. Routes, the calendar, the ships and the two fares we can quote come after.

The river

Five stretches around one city

  1. 01

Bordeaux and the city reach of the Garonne

The first and last day of every week. Viking opens with the Grand Théâtre and the UNESCO-listed Port of the Moon, then returns later in the week to the Place de la Bourse with a scenic sail on the Garonne. Uniworld adds an after-hours visit to the Bassins des Lumières, and Scenic offers its own after-hours access there as a signature event. The Cité du Vin wine museum is on Tauck's land days.

  2. 02

    The Dordogne: Libourne for Saint-Émilion

The Right Bank. Viking sails the Dordogne to Libourne and gives the town its own day — the walls, the clock tower, the Gothic church, the market. AmaWaterways spends two days there. Uniworld uses the Libourne stop for a Saint-Émilion walking tour with tasting, plus a walk through Libourne's farmers' market, and Avalon's Saint-Émilion visit pairs chocolate with wine.

  3. 03

Bourg and Blaye, on the Gironde

Below the confluence the two rivers become the Gironde estuary. Viking gives Bourg a day of its own, for a stroll through the cobbled village, then tours Blaye's 17th-century citadel, a UNESCO site, and the ruins of a Gothic château. Uniworld pairs Bourg-sur-Gironde and Blaye on one day, with a wine-bar tasting in Blaye and a drive along the Corniche Fleurie. AmaWaterways and Scenic call at Blaye too.

  4. 04

    The Médoc: Pauillac and Cussac-Fort-Médoc

The Left Bank, across the estuary. Viking lands at Pauillac for a château visit and a tasting before turning back toward Bordeaux; AmaWaterways themes its Pauillac day 'The art of wine', and Scenic stops here as well. Uniworld docks at Cussac-Fort-Médoc instead. Its choices are an oyster tasting, a châteaux route with a private tasting, or a bike ride through the vineyards.

  5. 05

Upstream on the Garonne: Cadillac for Sauternes

The sweet-wine end of the week. Viking pairs Cadillac's castle with the Sauternes region, then sails the Garonne back to the city. Uniworld visits the Royal Château de Cazeneuve with a Sauternes toast. This is where the tide shows — Uniworld says reaching Cadillac depends on it, and guests go by motorcoach when the ship can't make it.

Five ways to buy Bordeaux

One shape dominates: the round trip. The others hang hotel time, a second river or a train ride off either end of it.

The Bordeaux round trip, about 8 days

The core product on every line that sails here. Viking's Châteaux, Rivers & Wine runs the Dordogne and Libourne, Bourg, Blaye with Pauillac, and Cadillac. AmaWaterways' Taste of Bordeaux sails on AmaDolce with two Libourne days and Pauillac; Uniworld's Brilliant Bordeaux sails on S.S. Bon Voyage. Avalon's Bonjour Bordeaux covers the Garonne and Dordogne on Avalon Artistry II, and Scenic sells its own Bordeaux sailings on both rivers.

Viking AmaWaterways Uniworld Avalon Scenic

Bordeaux with Paris

AmaWaterways (Grand Seine & Bordeaux) and Avalon (French Masterpiece) join Bordeaux to Paris in one trip. Viking sells a three-night Paris pre-cruise extension, from $1,199, or $1,799 for the Premium version.

AmaWaterways Avalon Viking

Tauck: Bordeaux by land, the Seine by river

Tauck doesn't sail these rivers. Its Bordeaux, Paris & the Seine opens with three hotel nights at the InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hôtel, with the Cité du Vin and Saint-Émilion on the land days, then takes a high-speed train to Paris to board its Seine riverboat.

Tauck

With the Basque coast or the Loire

Viking's fully guided extensions point both ways: three nights in Bilbao and San Sebastián before the cruise, or three in the Loire Valley after it, each from $1,499.

Viking

Late autumn and Christmas

AmaWaterways keeps Taste of Bordeaux running into December, with festive sailings from late November in 2026 and from 18 November to 16 December in 2027. Avalon has a November 2026 sailing. Uniworld's 2027 season stops in late October.

March to December, no fixed peak

Prime monthsSailingFew or no sailings

March–December · Christmas sailings in December. Tap a month for what a sailing then is like.

The lines sail Bordeaux from March into December. Uniworld runs weekly from 28 March to 24 October in 2027, and AmaWaterways starts even earlier, on 11 March.

AmaWaterways' 2027 calendar goes on through the summer with wine-themed weeks, then closes with festive sailings from mid-November to mid-December.

No line names a peak, and none publishes harvest dates. Pick by the weeks you can travel and the ship you want, not a guessed harvest date.

The variable the lines name here is the tide, not drought — and it matters most at Cadillac.

Tides, and what the lines do

  • UniworldReaching Cadillac depends on the tide; guests go by motorcoach if the ship can't make it.Source
  • CroisiEurope (not reviewed)Its schedule may vary with the tides, Blaye and Libourne can be swapped for Bourg, and excursions are reorganised around the tide.Source

The ships on these rivers

Bordeaux ships run mid-sized. Uniworld's S.S. Bon Voyage carries 124 guests, AmaDolce 140, and Scenic's Diamond and Sapphire 155 — both rebuilt in 2017 with a vitality pool and a Salt Therapy Lounge. No line bills one side of the ship as the better view on the estuary, so choose the cabin for its size, not its bank.

What it costs

Two fares we can quote

Lead fares per person on 27 October 2026, as each line published them. Uniworld's is an offer price on one May departure; Viking's is cruise-only and tied to an October sale. AmaWaterways, Avalon and Scenic haven't published 2027 Bordeaux fares yet. Ask us to price the same week on two lines before choosing.

Lead fares per person as each line published them; the line under each bar keeps the line’s own wording. “A night” is our arithmetic: the lead fare divided by the trip’s nights (days minus one, hotel nights included where the package has them), before taxes and port charges. Your dates will price differently. That’s the job we do for free.

Boarding in Bordeaux

Bordeaux is the only place these cruises start and finish. Bordeaux-Mérignac (BOD) is the airport, and the city repays a night or two before the ship — Tauck builds three into its trip.

Ports of call

Five calls, two banks

Libourne for Saint-Émilion, Bourg and Blaye on the estuary's right bank, Pauillac or Cussac-Fort-Médoc in the Médoc, and Cadillac for Sauternes. Each is a single day — and on Viking, Blaye and Pauillac share one.

Quick answers

Bordeaux river cruise questions

Which months suit a Bordeaux cruise?

Anything from late March to late October covers most lines. AmaWaterways opens on 11 March in 2027 and sails on into mid-December with festive departures. No line publishes a peak or a harvest window. Choose by your travel dates first.

Do ships stop in Saint-Émilion itself?

No — they dock at Libourne on the Dordogne, and Saint-Émilion is the excursion. Uniworld runs a walking tour with a tasting there, and AmaWaterways gives Libourne two days.

What difference does the tide make?

Mostly it shows at the upstream end. Uniworld says reaching Cadillac depends on the tide, and swaps in a motorcoach when the ship can't make it.

Is there a day for Cognac?

As an excursion, not a port. Viking features the Camus house and Avalon Rémy Martin.

Can I pair Bordeaux with Paris?

Easily. AmaWaterways and Avalon sell Paris–Bordeaux combinations, Viking adds a three-night Paris extension, and Tauck stays in Bordeaux hotels before a train to its Seine ship.

How do the lines differ here?

Mostly in the Médoc and the evenings. Uniworld swaps Pauillac for Cussac-Fort-Médoc and an oyster tasting, and it and Scenic both offer after-hours time at the Bassins des Lumières. AmaWaterways doubles up in Libourne. Uniworld's $2,849 offer and Viking's $2,999 are the two fares we can quote — ask us for the others on your dates.
