Two landings, one airport
Before you board on the Moselle, inTrier & Remich
Two towns, two countries, one airport. Riverside starts its Moselle sailings in Roman Trier; Avalon starts in Remich, a wine town across the border in Luxembourg — and either way you'll most likely land at LUX.

In short
Read this first
Check which town your ship leaves from. Riverside's Basel–Trier and Trier–Amsterdam sailings start or end in Trier; Avalon's Canals, Vineyards & Castles boards in Remich, in Luxembourg.
Neither line names its quay. Trier has at least three river-cruise positions, and the authorities assign them, so get the address before you book a taxi.
Fly into Luxembourg. Bus 302 runs from the airport to Trier by way of the Wasserbillig border crossing; the airport lists no bus to Remich, so plan on a car.
Spend the night before in whichever city suits the ship. Luxembourg City has the stronger luxury hotels. Trier has the Porta Nigra on the doorstep — and one morning there is enough.
The berths
Where the ships tie up
Trier's quays are in two places: the riverside quarter of Zurlauben and the Moselle port. Remich's landing goes unnamed by every line that uses it.
Zurlaubener Ufer 72, Zurlauben (Trier)
A berth on the Zurlauben riverfront, the same stretch Trier's tourist office uses for its one- and two-hour Moselle boat trips. Neither the city nor the operator gives a walking time to the Porta Nigra.
Amadeus (Lüftner Cruises)
SourceNordkai (Am Moselkai) and Ostkai 4 (Trier port)
Two quays in the Moselle port area, listed alongside Zurlauben as Trier's other cruise positions. These are working-port addresses, not old-town ones. Allow for a taxi.
Amadeus (Lüftner Cruises)
SourceRiverside's Trier embarkation
Riverside starts and ends sailings in Trier but doesn't publish the quay. Some lines call on Trier without docking there at all — River Cruise Advisor's 2024 ship tied up in Piesport, about 40 minutes away by coach.
Riverside Luxury Cruises
SourceRemich, Luxembourg (Avalon)
Avalon's line is simply that 'you'll board your Avalon Suite Ship® in Remich on the beautiful Moselle River'. No quay name follows. Port listings don't add one either.
Avalon Waterways
SourceAmadeus says Trier positions are assigned by local authorities and can change at short notice. Neither Riverside nor Avalon publishes an embarkation window. Ask for the address and the boarding time together — Avalon takes Day 1 questions on 877.797.8791.

Getting there
Getting in from the airport
Luxembourg is the airport for both landings. Frankfurt is the long way round, and the shuttle that linked them was showing as suspended in October 2026.
Fly into
Luxembourg Airport (Findel) LUX
Luxembourg is the closest airport to both landings, though neither the airport nor the lines publish a drive time to Trier or Remich.
- Bus
Bus 302 to Trier
Line 302 runs between Trier and Howald via the airport, stopping at Quai 6 and Quai 5, and crosses into Germany at Wasserbillig. It's the one airport route to Germany the airport lists. Check times and fares before you fly — the airport page doesn't carry them.
Source - Taxi
A taxi, especially for Remich
There's a taxi rank at the terminal, and pre-booked cars now collect at Kiss & Fly Parking C. No fares are posted. For Remich it's the practical answer, since no airport bus goes there.
Source - Train
The tram, for a Luxembourg City night
The airport tram runs to Kirchberg, Bonnevoie, Gasperich and Stadion. Useful if you're sleeping in the capital first. Less useful with a week's luggage.

Frankfurt and Hahn, the long way
Flibco timed its Luxembourg shuttles at about 4 h 20 to Frankfurt Main and 2 h 40 to Frankfurt-Hahn. The route shows as 'temporarily suspended', and Flibco's Hahn page offers no Trier link. Treat Frankfurt as a last resort, not a plan.
Source - Line transfer
Ask before you assume one
Avalon's Remich itinerary carries no Day 1 transfer detail, and its pre-cruise packages are in Paris or Amsterdam, not Luxembourg. Riverside doesn't publish Trier transfer terms. Settle this at booking.

What the lines say about transfers
- Avalon WaterwaysPre-cruise packages are Paris or Amsterdam only, and Day 1 arrangements for Remich go through Avalon on 877.797.8791.
- Riverside Luxury CruisesRiverside doesn't publish transfer terms for Trier, so confirm them with the line when you book.
The day before
The day before you board
Trier is a Roman city first, and the best of it opens early. Do the monuments in the morning; leave the river for the afternoon.
- 01
Climb the Porta Nigra
The great Roman gate opens daily at 9:00 — to 18:00 April to September, 17:00 in March and October, 16:00 November to February, last entry half an hour before. Adults pay €6, and the AntikenCard covers it. Closed 24–26 and 31 December, 1 January and Rosenmontag.

Walk the Kaiserthermen
The imperial baths are part of Trier's UNESCO-listed Roman buildings. The Zentrum der Antike sells tickets online and an English multimedia guide. Confirm the opening hours when you buy.
Source - 03
Take a Moselle loop from Zurlauben
The tourist office lists a one-hour 'Kleine Panorama-Rundfahrt' and a two-hour 'Auf den Spuren der Römer', both leaving from Zurlauben. That's the riverfront with one of the cruise quays on it — a useful recce. Check the calendar for sailing dates.

Or dine in Luxembourg City
If you're sleeping in the capital, Michelin gives Le Lys at Villa Pétrusse one star for modern French cooking. La Cristallerie at Le Place d'Armes is the other serious table. Book both well ahead.

In Advent, the Hauptmarkt
Trier's Christmas Market fills the Hauptmarkt and Domfreihof from 20 November to 22 December 2026, with about 90 wooden stalls and a stage before the cathedral's west front. It closes on Totensonntag, 22 November. The organisers don't publish daily hours.

Where to stay
The night before
Our Trier & Remich hotel guide covers six addresses, most of them in Luxembourg City. Villa Pétrusse, with two Michelin Keys, and Le Place d'Armes, with one, lead it; Becker's Hotel is the Trier pick.
Trier Altstadt (Porta Nigra and Hauptmarkt)
The Roman gate, the market squares and the tourist office at Simeonstraße 60 sit together. For a Riverside embarkation, this is the base. Sightseeing is on foot; the quay is probably a short taxi.
Luxembourg City, Ville Haute
Le Place d'Armes on its namesake square and Villa Pétrusse above the Pétrusse valley are both in the Michelin Guide. It's the airport city, too. Choose it for the hotel, not the walk to the ship.
Remich and the Luxembourg Moselle
Avalon's boarding town, in Luxembourg's wine country. Michelin lists l'Écluse in nearby Stadtbredimus and Victor's Residenz across the river in Nennig. Remich itself doesn't make our list.

Calls here mid-cruise
When
For a December start, the Hauptmarkt market runs 20 November to 22 December 2026 and shuts on Totensonntag. The Porta Nigra closes at 16:00 from November to February and stays shut over Christmas and New Year's Day. Roman sites can also close at short notice in bad weather. Put the monuments first in the day, and the market after dark.

Quick answers
Trier & Remich river cruise questions
Where do river ships dock in Trier?
Amadeus lists three Trier positions: Zurlaubener Ufer 72, Nordkai (Am Moselkai) and Ostkai 4. It also says local authorities assign them and can change them at short notice. Riverside doesn't publish its quay, so ask the line for the address.
Where exactly does Avalon board in Remich?
Avalon says only that you board 'in Remich on the beautiful Moselle River'. Avalon doesn't publish the quay, so your Avalon documents, or a call to 877.797.8791, will settle it.
Which airport is best for Trier and Remich?
Luxembourg (LUX). Bus 302 goes from the airport to Trier via Wasserbillig, but the airport lists no route to Remich, so take a taxi. Frankfurt and Frankfurt-Hahn are much farther; the Flibco shuttle that once linked them to Luxembourg was showing as suspended on 21 Oct 2026.
Is it better to sleep in Trier or Luxembourg City?
Luxembourg City, for the hotels — Villa Pétrusse holds two Michelin Keys and Le Place d'Armes one. Trier makes sense if Riverside boards you there and you want the Roman sites before lunch.
Does every Moselle cruise that visits Trier dock there?
No. River Cruise Advisor's ship in 2024 berthed in Piesport and coached guests in, about 40 minutes each way. Check whether your itinerary says Trier or a Trier excursion.
Is one night before boarding enough?
Usually. The Porta Nigra opens at 9:00 every day it's open, and the one-hour Zurlauben boat loop fits an afternoon. Add a second night only if you want Luxembourg City as well.
