Mostly across the border

The night before, nearTrier & Remich

The best beds for a Moselle embarkation are mostly in another country. Four of these six are in Luxembourg City, the airport city; one is in Trier, and one is a castle on the German bank of the Upper Moselle.

How we chose

How we chose

Neither landing has a hotel scene to speak of, so we widened the net to the capital — and kept the two addresses that make sense on the river itself. None of the six claims a Moselle view.

Michelin was the common yardstick. All six are in its guide; Villa Pétrusse holds two Keys and Le Place d'Armes one. The other four are listed without a Key, and each card says so.

We don't rank by price. The order is Luxembourg City first, then Trier, then the Upper Moselle — roughly the order you'd meet them driving from the airport.

The hotels

Six for the night before, in Trier & Remich

Quiet luxuryMichelin Two Keys

Villa Pétrusse

A former 'miniature château' built in 1880 for textile merchant Henri-Eugène de Kerkhove, with 22 rooms plus suites and a penthouse, and the one-star Le Lys.

The top Michelin rating on this list, above the Pétrusse valley and the Adolphe Bridge, with a starred dinner downstairs. Reserve with the hotel, or ask us to add it to your plan.

The grand oneMichelin One Key; Relais & Châteaux

Le Place d'Armes

'A string of seven 18th-century buildings' with 'a mere 30 rooms and suites', home to La Cristallerie and Le Plëss.

Seven old houses on the Place d'Armes, and La Cristallerie for a first-night dinner that needs no taxi. Small enough to feel like a private house, not a hotel lobby.

The sensible splurgeListed in the Michelin Guide

Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal

An upper-upscale Luxembourg City address, usually at a gentler rate than the two Key holders. The sensible call when the château and the square are full.

Le Royal

Luxembourg City's classic grand-hotel name, in the Michelin Guide without a Key. A dependable fallback — the name you'd book, not the one you'd travel for.

Becker's Hotel

32 rooms at Olewiger Strasse 206 in Trier-Olewig — 18 rooms and suites in the main house, 14 in the Weinhaus — and, in Michelin's words, it 'skilfully bridges the two worlds'.

The one Trier address here, out in Olewig rather than by the Porta Nigra, and the night to book for the dinner before a Riverside embarkation. No booking button on this card; reserve with the hotel.

Victor's Residenz - Hotel Schloss Berg

A castle hotel in Nennig, home to Victor's Fine Dining by christian bau.

A castle on the German side of the Upper Moselle, with a destination restaurant under the same roof — the choice for Avalon guests who want the night before to be an occasion. The hotel doesn't publish a distance to the Remich landing, so arrange the taxi in advance.

Embarkation day

Embarkation-day practicalities

  1. 01

Get the boarding time before check-out

Neither Riverside nor Avalon publishes an embarkation window for these landings. Ask the line, then ask the hotel to hold bags until you leave. Avalon takes Day 1 questions on 877.797.8791.

  2. 02

Book the car, not the bus

The airport lists no bus to Remich, and its tram serves Kirchberg, Bonnevoie, Gasperich and Stadion. Pre-booked taxis collect at Kiss & Fly Parking C. From a Luxembourg City hotel, a booked car to Remich or Trier is the simple answer.

  3. 03

    Trier quays can move

Trier has three cruise positions — Zurlauben, Nordkai and Ostkai — and Amadeus says the authorities can reassign them at short notice. Confirm the quay the evening before. Give the driver the address, not just 'the ship'.

Have us plan it

We book the night before with the sailing, so the transfer, the all-aboard time and the flight all line up. Tell us the dates and which of these you liked.

  • Usually the same fare as booking direct, and our advice costs you nothing.
  • We compare the lines sailing from Trier & Remich for your dates, not one brochure.
  • Hotel nights, flights and transfers can go into the same plan.

Quick answers

Trier & Remich pre-cruise hotel questions

Why are most of these hotels in Luxembourg City?

Because that's where the Michelin Keys are, and where you land. Villa Pétrusse holds two and Le Place d'Armes one. Rather than pad the list, we kept one strong address on each side of the river and put the rest where you land.

Which hotel is closest to Avalon's Remich landing?

Victor's Residenz is the only one on the Upper Moselle itself, in Nennig on the German bank — though the hotel doesn't publish a distance to the berth. Michelin also lists l'Écluse in Stadtbredimus nearby.

Where should I stay for a Riverside start in Trier?

Becker's Hotel in Trier-Olewig, if you want the dinner. It's not in the Altstadt, so take a taxi to the quay in the morning. For the Porta Nigra on foot, you'd want an old-town hotel, and none of those made our shortlist.

Do any of these hotels have a river view?

None of the six claims one. In Luxembourg City the view is the Pétrusse valley or the old squares, not the Moselle. You'll get the river from the ship's top deck soon enough.
