The night before, two ways

The night before, inPassau

Passau's old town is small enough that any hotel on the peninsula is a short walk to the Altstadt quay. The real decision is whether to sleep here at all, or in Munich with a train the next morning.

How we chose

How we chose

We looked for a hotel's own statement about where it sits relative to the water. Then a rating we could confirm — the hotel's own site, Forbes Travel Guide or Michelin, with Booking.com as the fallback. Where a hotel publishes little itself, the card says so.

Passau has no airport, so 'airport access' here means the train from Munich. Two Munich hotels made the list for that reason, not because they are near the Danube. Forbes puts the Mandarin Oriental 28–35 minutes from MUC; the fastest airport-to-Passau train is about 1 h 25.

We don't rank by price. The order below is the order we'd show a client, with the Passau addresses first.

The hotels

Six for the night before, in Passau

The classic one

Hotel Wilder Mann

‘Close to the city’s boat quays’, in the hotel’s words — it publishes no distance.

Shares a four-building old-town complex with the Glasmuseum Passau, opened in 1985 by Neil Armstrong.

The classic old-town address, and the one that calls itself 'an ideal central base for guests of Danube boat tours and river cruises' — with the Glass Museum downstairs, open daily 9–17, to see before checkout. No star rating is published, and the hotel gives no walking distance to the quay: close, not measured.

Hotel König

Untere Donaulände 1 — 'direkt an der Donau liegend (Fritz-Schäffer-Promenade)', ship landing stages immediately outside

Own underground garage (€20 a night per the hotel), on the Danube cycle path between the pedestrian zone and the old town, about 800 m from the Hauptbahnhof.

The riverfront pick, full stop: the hotel says coach parking is right outside the door, the landing stages are with it, and if your ship is at the Altstadt quay embarkation day is a walk of a few hundred metres. A taxi from the station runs about €10, per the hotel.

Quiet luxury4-star per the hotel's own site

Altstadt-Hotel Passau

'Direkt am Donauufer gelegen', at the Dreiflüsseeck

35 modern rooms, a Danube terrace and a breakfast room the hotel says looks out over the river and the castles, with about 12 restaurants within a five-minute walk.

The quiet end of the peninsula, where the three rivers meet — a short walk back to the Römerplatz berths, with breakfast served to the view the Oberhaus crowd climbs for. Smaller and newer in feel than the Wilder Mann: a different kind of old-town stay, not a lesser one.

Hotel Residenz Passau

Riverside in the old town — no distance published.

Booking.com describes a riverside old-town hotel about 100 m from St. Stephen's Cathedral and Residenzplatz.

The boutique-scale option a few minutes from the cathedral and the Fritz-Schäffer-Promenade berths, which puts the noon organ concert on your doorstep. The hotel publishes little itself, so every fact here is Booking.com's — worth double-checking the room before you commit.

Mandarin Oriental, Munich

Matsuhisa Munich (Japanese-Peruvian, by Nobu Matsuhisa) and The Terrace rooftop with city views; Forbes says the Hofbräuhaus is 'situated just feet from' the hotel.

For the Munich overnight most Passau embarkers take: Forbes puts it 28–35 minutes from MUC, and from there it's the train or your line's transfer east. Dinner at Matsuhisa the night before is the best meal on this page — in Munich, not Passau.

The grand oneMichelin Two Keys

Rosewood Munich

Kardinal-Faulhaber-Straße 1 in Old Town Munich, with the Asaya Spa, a pool, Brasserie Cuvilliés for Bavarian classics and Bar Montez with live jazz.

The grand new-build choice for a Munich night before the Passau transfer — the spa and pool matter after a transatlantic flight, and Brasserie Cuvilliés gives you the Bavarian dinner without the beer-hall. Michelin lists it at two Keys; Forbes doesn't rate it in 2026, which is absence of a rating, not a verdict.

Embarkation day

Night-before practicalities

  1. 01

Check-out is early; all-aboard is not

Uniworld's 2026 all-aboard at Lindau 3 is 7:30 pm. That leaves most of embarkation day in town. Fit the noon organ concert in before you go to the ship — it runs 2 May to 31 October, daily except Sundays and holidays.

  2. 02

Know which landing before you book the taxi

The Altstadt quay is a walk from any peninsula hotel. Lände Lindau (downstream) and Racklau (upstream) are each about 2.5 km from the old town per the signs, and Lindau has a bus stop with service to the Altstadt. Stadtwerke Passau allows short-term loading at Lindau and the old-town berths, so a taxi can drop bags at the ship.

  3. 03

Passau publishes nothing on luggage storage

Neither the city's berth PDF nor its cruise sales guide mentions left luggage. Ask the hotel to hold bags after checkout — in Passau the hotels are close enough that this usually solves it. If you slept in Munich, your bags ride the train with you.

Have us plan it

Hotel night and cruise, one plan

We book the night before with the sailing, so the transfer, the all-aboard time and the flight all line up. Tell us the dates and which of these you liked.

  • Usually the same fare as booking direct, and our advice costs you nothing.
  • We compare the lines sailing from Passau for your dates, not one brochure.
  • Hotel nights, flights and transfers can go into the same plan.

Quick answers

Passau pre-cruise hotel questions

Which Passau hotel is closest to the cruise berths?

Hotel König, on the hotel's own account: it stands at Untere Donaulände 1 on the Fritz-Schäffer-Promenade with the ship landing stages immediately outside. That is the Altstadt quay — if your ship is at Lindau or Racklau, you still need a taxi or the bus.

Should I stay in Munich or Passau?

Munich if you land late or want a grand hotel with a spa; Passau if you want the old town on foot and the noon organ. Forbes puts the Mandarin Oriental 28–35 minutes from MUC, and the fastest train to Passau Hbf is about 1 h 25 — a Munich night costs you a morning.

Do these hotels hold luggage after checkout?

None of the six says so either way, and Passau publishes no left-luggage facility. Ask at check-in. Uniworld's 7:30 pm all-aboard means a long gap between checkout and boarding, so it's worth asking before you arrive.

How do I get from Passau Hbf to the old-town hotels?

Hotel König says it's about 800 m from the Hauptbahnhof and a taxi runs about €10. The other peninsula hotels publish no distance. The old town is compact, so expect a similar fare.
